Chapter 12
Liam, Jacob, and I are sitting at breakfast the next morning, which our chef Allison did a great job fixing up. Between the croissants, fruit plates, egg casserole, bagels, and yogurt parfaits, I think she covered every food group.
"So, tell me," Liam looks from me to Jacob, "how was the party last night?"
"I'd tell you...if I remembered," Jacob says. He's not joking. When we got home last night, he almost drank a tube of toothpaste thinking it was a glass of water.
"Why doesn't that surprise me?" Liam rolls his eyes as he takes a sip of his coffee. "What about you, Fee? Did you have fun?"
"Yeah, it was fine," I say, shrugging my shoulders. The less Liam knows the better.
"What I do recall is you talking to that kid Justin, or whatever his name is, right before we left," Jacob says, causing Liam to look at me in a concerned manner.
"Who's Justin?" Liam immediately questions in his overprotective tone. I glare at Jacob, signaling that payback's on its way.
"It was his party. And for your reference," I intentionally look at Jacob, "last night was my first time talking to him."
"Oh," is all Liam says at first, but, let's be real — he's not dropping this so soon.
"How'd you get invited then?" Liam asks when Jacob and I don't say anything.
I look to my baby brother for backup, but it's pointless; he's too busy scarfing down his second bagel.
"Um, through his friend, actually," I say, keeping my head down as I fork around the fruit on my plate. I refuse to make eye contact with Liam, and if I look at Jacob, I can't promise you that I won't throw something at his face.
"Who's his friend?" Liam presses.
"Just some guy I met. Cassie knows him, actually."
"Is Cassie good friends with him?" Liam continues to ask. This is one of the reasons why I don't have a social life. Because if I do, I'm forced to deal with the repercussions of being constantly interrogated by my brothers.
"Shit, what's with the questions, Liam?" Jacob finally interjects. I knew that he would eventually; he's always on my side.
"Look, we're in a different state. I don't know anything about anyone here, so, it only makes sense for me to ask. Forgive me if I'm not too keen on the fact that you guys are hanging out with people you don't know. Now, I trust Cassie to be a good judge of character. I'd just like to understand how well she knows them."
"They're my age," I say. "Cassie went to school with these guys. She's not necessarily friends with them, but she grew up with them. She knows what they're about. And, frankly, I think I do, too. So, you can trust me when I say that I'm not going to be hanging out with them very often. But, when a party comes along, and I have the desire to go — which, might I add, is a rarity — then I'm going to go. You have nothing to worry about, Liam," I look at him and say. "Jacob and I are smart. We know what we're doing."
"Okay," he finally gives in. "I'm trusting you." He looks at me and then to Jacob. "The both of you."
"Good. Now, let's talk about something else," I say, reaching for a croissant. "What time do we want to go to this carnival thing on Sunday? Cassie said people show up around 8."
"Yeah, I think that's fine," Liam says. Initially, when I had mentioned the idea to him, he was pretty hesitant. But eventually, he caved. "I made us dinner reservations at this sushi place in town, so we can go straight from there. Today, dad's making me work on a proposal for one of our uptown properties, so I'm pretty busy until 6. You guys good on your own for lunch?"
"I think we can manage," Jacob smartly says, looking at me.
"Beach again?" I ask him, but he rolls his eyes. I know he's getting sick of our repetitive outings, but Cassie told me she'd be there with Kyle.
"I guess, but if I don't meet some fresh faces in the next 24 hours, I'm going to lose my shit."
"Oh, you mean like that fresh-faced blonde bimbo you were making out with last night?" I raise my eyebrows and fire back, which causes Liam to choke on his coffee.
"Excuse me, what?" he gapes at Jacob.
I warned Jacob that payback was coming, and, now...we're even.
Jacob is one of my favorite characters! He's funny but charming. What do you think? Do you have a favorite character?
