Rise of Makuu

Suki's POV

I hear a panicked chittering as we are on patrol. "It's coming from Ukuni Woods!" I tell the others as we run towards them.

"Whatta we got, Ono? Hyenas?" Kion asks.

"Jackals?" Fuli asks.

"Vultures?" Beshte asks.

"Hyenas, jackals, vultures. Whatever it is, the Lion Guard can take it!" Bunga states.

"I don't hear hyenas, jackals or vultures" I tell them.

"Hold on! Getting it in sight" Ono tells us from above. "Really?" he groans.

"Ono, report " Kion instructs. As we reach Ukuni woods. Ono lands beside a thorn bush.

"Nothing thrilling. Just a hyrax stuck in a thorn bush" Ono tells us. The hyrax continues to chatter panicked.

"Seriously" Fuli and I say.

"That's not so bad" Beshte states.

"We rushed all the way across the Pride Lands for this?" Bunga whines.

"Bunga, the Lion Guard's duty is to defend the Circle of Life. Even if it means helping a hyrax out of a thorn bush" Kion tells him.

"All right. I got this one" Bunga states and heads to the bush. He tries to pick up Pim the hyrax. But it scampers away from him. "Come on, hyraxie. Let's get you outta there" he says trying to grab him.

"Little B, I think the hyrax's trying avoid being shredded by thorns" Beshte tells him.

"Oh!" Bunga says. "Kion! Use the Roar! You can flatten those thorn bushes!" he states.

"If Kion flattens the thorn bushes with the Roar. What do you think will happen to the hyrax?" Fuli asks him.

"Besides, we can handle this without me going deaf" I tell him.

"Oh... Hadn't thought about that" Bunga says sheepishly.

"Listen, Suki is right. We don't need my Roar to clear the thorn bushes. We can just pull 'em aside" Kion tells him.

"Oh, yeah! Zuka Zama" Bunga exclaims and heads for the bushes. He parts them with his body for Pim. "Let's go, hyraxie! Move it!" he says.

"I got it" Fuli says. She zooms over and grabs Pim. Then runs him away from the bush, before setting him down again.

"Thanks, Fuli. Nice work, Bunga" Kion praises. Pim starts to rub himself on the snake skin he'd be holding.

"Whoa, weird. It must really like that snake skin" Fuli states.

"No, no, no. It's using the scent from the snake skin to mask its own smell. That way snakes won't detect him. Pretty clever" Ono explains.

"Not when the snake is right behind you" I state as I eye the snake. It swallows Pim whole.

"Hey! We just saved that guy!" Bunga exclaims. He makes the snake bring up Pim.

"Sssssay! That was my lunch!" Ushari hisses as him.

"Yeah? Looks like it was to go. And now, so are you" Bunga tells him. He rolls him into a ball and throws him into a tree. Pim thanks Bunga with a hug before running away.

"Bunga! Your smell must be even scarier than a snake's" Fuli laughs.

"I'll take that as a compliment" he tells her.

"I wouldn't!" Ono gags and I nod my head in agreement. Beshte groans.

"Everything okay, Beshte?" Kion asks him. As Ono lands on him.

"Poa. The flowers just got me a little sticky, is all" Beshte states.

"Sticky? Oh... Oh, no! I'd say a lot sticky! Hapana!" Ono shouts as he breaks free of Beshte.
Who pulls himself free of the tree behind him.

"Oh. I just might need a bath" he states.

"I'm actually due for one also from Aunt Nala, I'll see you guys later" I tell them.

"Sure thing Suki, tell mum I said hi" Kion tells me. I nod my head and run back to pride rock. I find aunt Nala giving Kiara a bath.

"What was it this time?" Kiara asks me.

"Just Pim stuck in a thorn bush" I state. "The others went to big springs as Beshte needs a bath" I tell them.

"And it's time for yours" Aunt Nala states as she finishes with Kiara's bath. I swap places with Kiara and she goes to talk to her friends. I relax enjoying my bath until Kion and the others return saying something about a mashindano.

"What's a Mashinadano?" I ask aunt Nala.

"It's when two crocodiles fight to determine the leader, whilst many other animals watch as spectators. It will take place near Lake Matope at sunset" she states. We go join the rest of our family. At least I'm clean.

"I don't like this mashindano thing. Why should a fight determine who the crocodile leader is?" Kion asks his parents.

"Don't forget, Kion. Your father had to fight Scar to regain leadership of the Pride Lands" Aunt Nala reminds him.

"That was different. I think Makuu's just looking to pick a fight" Kion states.

"Can't you do something about it, Dad? You're king over all the animals in the Pride Lands" Kiara says.

"I am King. And as King, I know that all animals in the Pride Lands have their own customs. And they need to be respected" Uncle Simba tells us.

"Exactly and this is the crocodiles way" I state.

"I guess" Kion says defeated. We all go to watch the mashindano with the other pride landers and the crocodile float. The crocodiles chant 'Mashindano' with the rest of the pride landers. A circle is formed around Makuu and Pua.

"Your confidence is admirable, Makuu. Your over-sized ego is not" Pua tells him.

Makuu scoffs rolling his eyes. "You're old and weak, Pua! Today is the end of your reign" he tells him. The fight starts. I focus on the fight, blocking out everything else. It was a tight fight, but in the end Pua's age lead to his defeat and he taps out. Uncle Simba goes over to them.

"Pua's tapping out! He gives up!" Bunga states.

"What? You mean Makuu wins?" Kion asks.

"I'm afraid so, son" Aunt Nala tells him.

"Congratulations, Makuu. You have won the mashindano. You are now the leader of the crocodiles. You have very thick skin to fill" Uncle Simba tells him. Before turning to the former crocodile leader. "Pua, you were a strong and wise leader for many years. And for that, you have my thanks" he tells him.

"Thank you, your Majesty" Pua says bowing his head. Before turning away and walks away.

"Don't let the reeds hit you on the way out, Pua!" Makuu chuckles.

"As defeated leader, Pua's banished from the crocodile float" Basi explains to us. He is Beshte's dad and leader of the hippos.

"Makuu! Makuu! Makuu! Makuu!" the crocodiles chant.

"That's right, Makuu. Leader of the crocodiles" Makuu says proudly. He leads the float back to the lake. We all go home.

(Time skip to the next day)

We're all chilling next to pride rock as Ono is still trying to find a way to stop Bunga from stinking. I'm laying beside Kion. Aunt Nala and Uncle Simba are out hunting with the other lionesses. When Kiara appears looking worried. "Zazu's just received word that a herd of giraffe have moved into the baboons' forest. And Dad's out hunting with Mom" she tells Kion.

"We're on it" he tells her as we all get up. We go to the top of pried rock. "Ono, what do you see?" he asks.

"It's crazy, Kion. Not only have the giraffes taken over the monkey's forest... The acacia savanna where the giraffe live is full of zebra and antelope... The zebra and antelope grazing ground is overrun with elephants... And the elephants' watering hole is filled with hippos" Ono explains.

"Heyvi kabisa! Isn't anyone in the Pride Lands in their usual habitat?" Kion asks him.

"Wait, there's more! Looks like Makuu and the crocodiles have taken over Big Springs" Ono tells us.

"So when the crocs pushed out the hippos" Kiara says.

"It made all the other herds move" I state.

"Lion Guard! Let's go talk with Makuu and get this sorted out" Kion tells us. We all go to Big Springs to talk to Makuu. "Makuu, we have a problem. Your taking over Big Springs has messed things up all over the Pride Lands. I need you and the crocs to leave" he tells Makuu.

"Why should we leave? The fish in the lake taste great" Makuu states. Catching a fish and eating it. "I think we're here to stay. That is, unless you want to fight" he tells Kion.

"C'mon, Kion. You could take this guy" Bunga tells him.

"Makuu's got no respect for anybody" Beshta states.

"Beshte's right" Fuli agrees.

"You won't get an argument from me" Ono states.

"Fighting, doesn't solve everything guys" I remind them.

"Suki is right" Kion states.

" Only weak and cowardly leaders are afraid to fight" Makuu states.

"A wise leader knows when to fight and when not too" I tell him.

"I'm not afraid" Kion tells him loudly. The clouds start to shift above us. "No, lets go" he tells us as we leave big springs. We go in search of Pua.

"I don't see how I can help" Pua tells us.

"I was thinking. If you called for another mashindano, you might be able to beat Makuu. Then you could lead the crocodiles again" Kion states.

"You were there, Kion. Makuu is stronger than me" Pua reminds him. "There are times when you have accept that you've been beaten . Even though you might not like it, Makuu has most certainly won" he tells him.

"But that doesn't make him a better leader than you" Kion tells him.

"True. But he's young. He can learn. Take my advice. If you really want to avoid a fight with Makuu, the best thing to do is just back down" Pua tells us. We return to pride rock to see if Uncle Simba has any ideas. But he wasn't back yet, but monkeys had moved to pride rock.

"Mom and Dad are not gonna be happy to find Pride Rock full of baboons. You guys better do something" Kiara tells us. One of the baboons plays with her tail. "Quit it!" she snaps. "The animals in the Pride Lands need to get back where they belong" she tells us.

"Agreed" I state as a baboon jumped over my head.

"We're working on it, Kiara" Kion assures her. "But Makuu won't listen to reason" he tells her. Ono finds the solution to Bunga's stink. Kion sends us back to the lair, saying he needs time to think. No doubt, he's going to see his grandfather.

(Back at the liar)

"So, I've given it a lot of thought. If Makuu wants a fight, he needs to know the Lion Guard can bring it" Kion tells us.

"What do you have in mind?" I ask him.

"I think a demonstration of the Roar will show Makuu exactly what he's up against, without hurting anyone" he states.

"Can we do that?" Fuli asks.

"Maybe you can use the Roar on the grove of trees near the Spring. Far as I know, nobody lives there. And I know just about everybody" Beshte states.

"Perfect! Bunga, Fuli, Ono, go make sure the grove is clear of animals" Kion instructs. "Cause nobody's where they usually are today. Suki, Beshte, you're with me!Till the Pride Lands' end..." Kion says.

"Lion guard defends" we all finish. Beshte, Kion and I go to big springs.

"Makuu, you and your crocs need to leave Big Springs now. Or the Lion Guard will force you out" Kion tells him.

"Tough talk, Kion. Can you back it up with action?" Makuu asks him.

"You better believe it" Kion tells him. Beshte and I look for Ono. We soon get the all clear sign and tell Kion. "Okay, Makuu. If you want a fight, the Lion Guard can bring it. Just be careful what you ask for" he tells Makuu.

"Oh, and why is that?" Makuu asks him.

"Because of this" Kion tells him. He demonstrates the Roar of the Elders as I cover my ears. It removes all the leaves from the grove trees. Kion looks back at Makuu.

"Um, perhaps it's time we moved on. Big Springs is running out of fish anyway" Makuu says. He leaves the water with the float. As the hippos return. All the animals return to their natural habitats.

"Looks like the Circle of Life's back in balance" I say with a smile.

"Yep. Except for one thing...Makuu!" Basi calls. Makuu looks at him. "Once the fish population is built back up, you and the crocs are welcome to come back. All you have to do is ask" he tells him. We all return to our separate homes, to see Uncle Simba and the others back from their hunt. Kion and I enjoy dinner with our family before calling it a night.

"I'll keep that in mind" Makuu tells him.
