Chapter Seventeen: Be Careful

"Why can't we just ask for directions?" Joshua asked for the tenth time.

"Because we aren't lost!" I clarified. I continued to stick my hands in my jean pockets, looking for my cell phone. I realized with dread that I had left it at the hotel. I knew for a fact that Joshua didn't have one, so I rolled my eyes in frustration.

Alright, I hated to admit that being lost was my fault, even if Joshua wasn't even blaming me. Stupid Bum! Getting me lost was probably part of his freaking conspiracy that he had against me! Ok, now I just sounded paranoid. Part of it was my underlying fear of being lost in an unknown place.

"Holy shit! What if we get mugged?" My word vomit was starting. I could feel it bubbling up. It was almost like that time I thought we were going to die on the jet, only now I was probably going to get mugged and probably killed in the process.

Alright, so I was being dramatic again. Fear tended to do that to me.

"We will not get mugged, Lilly. Plus, I'm here to protect you." Joshua said with a wink. He was about to lift his arms to flex, when I punched the right one with my fist.

"Ouch! What was that for?" Joshua whined, massaging the spot that my fist had made contact with.

"Oh, yeah. I feel really safe now. You can't even take a punch from a girl." I told him in a bored tone, scanning the area.

"Well, it wasn't like you warned me about it! Give me a head start! Come on!" Joshua stepped directly in my line of vision and started to mock boxing. I rolled my eyes, but played along anyway.

I slapped his left arm, before Joshua could pull it away. I started to giggle when I realized that instead of moving the left arm, he had moved his right.

I tried to hit his right arm and noticed that he moved his left out of the way. I continued giggle when I realized how uncoordinated he was.

"Oh my god, you have the worst reflexes in history!" I stated in between laughter.

Joshua's cheeks turned slightly red, but he started to laugh with me. I realized I was fully relaxed now, without a fear of being mugged. Had he done that on purpose? Before I could ask him, I saw him start towards a small woman that was a couple of feet away from us.

"What are you doing?" I hissed, grabbing hold of his arm and pulling him back.

"I'm asking for directions back to the hotel. Lilly, we're lost." He stated.

"I already told you! We. Are Not. Lost. I know exactly where we are." Now I was just plain out lying. But, Joshua looked a little unconvinced, like maybe I did know where we were.

"You know what? You're right. Plus, there was the huge language barrier we would have to cross just to get directions..." Joshua told me in the most convincing tone.

"Language barrier?" I repeated. He did know that people in London spoke English right?

"Yeah, Oh wait! There is no language barrier! So, why don't we just ask for directions anyway?" I realized that for the first time Joshua had been sarcastic. Oh.

I rolled my eyes and blew air out of my mouth, making my bangs flop around my forehead.

"Come on. Want me to prove that I know where we are?" I asked him, already pulling his hand towards the opposite direction of the woman.

I gave a silent prayer that I wouldn't get us more lost, and started to trudge my way towards what I thought was back towards the fabric store. I knew that Joshua was just humoring me, when we ended up walking for ten minutes straight with no sign of a familiar place.

I huffed and rubbed my face, I didn't want to admit it, but I was almost sure that we were now much more lost than before.

"Alright, so maybe I don't-" I started to say, but was cut off by Joshua's sounds of victory.

"Aha! I knew it!" He gloated. I rolled my eyes and was about to give him another arm punch when I was cut off again.

"Lilly, look!" Joshua started to point excitedly towards something behind me. I pivoted my body towards the direction that he was pointing to. It was a large white building with giant green letters. The sign read "Asda" and next to it were the words "Wal-Mart Supercentre".

We both started to sprint towards the building, upon seeing the first familiar place in ages. I mean, who didn't feel safety and hope in Wal-Mart?

We quickly made it to the automatic doors and walked our way in.

I turned my attention towards Joshua who was bowing down to a nearby chip aisle.

"We made it! We made it!" He chanted.

"You are so ridiculous." I laughed when he started to hug a Lays bag tight.

I gasped when I caught sight of a familiar package, earning a quizzical look from Joshua. I walked towards the aisle of Ramen Noodle packages and grasped one of the foam cups.

"What's that?" Joshua asked standing next to me, holding the chip bag.

My mouth dropped open in shock; I couldn't even get any words out.

"You don't know what Ramen Noodles are?" I gasped in continued shock.

"Is it like spaghetti or something?" Joshua looked really confused about the whole thing.

"I've gone for months just eating these suckers, and you've never tasted them?" I was completely appalled. How do you live your entire life without having Ramen Noodles?

It seemed impossible.  I grabbed a few more boxes and started to lead us towards the cash registers. I gave Joshua a glance and saw that he had an arm full of Ramen noodles, about fifteen boxes tops.

"Why are you getting so many? I already have some." I lifted the three boxes filled with foam cups up to show him.

"You think I'm going to get full with one of these," He questioned, holding a cup up in the air, mirroring my pose.

"Also, have you seen how cheap these are?" He looked entirely too excited about taking almost the entire row.

Tell me about it, I thought.

I rolled my eyes, but continued our way towards the registers.

The cashier lady had a really obvious English accent when she greeted us. We finally made our way to the front of the line. During the five minutes that we had stood there waiting, Joshua had already put about twenty more things onto the conveyer belt, earning a narrowed look from me.

Who the hell was going to eat three snicker bars, six bags of skittles, and about five other bags of chips? Him?

Our items were rung up and I handed the money to the woman. Joshua was pulling the bags out and holding them in his hands, when he gave me a pointed look.

I knew that he wanted me to ask for directions as his own personal form of punishment for getting us even more lost. I rolled my eyes, debating on whether or not to give in.

Huffing, I spoke grudgingly and asked for directions to our hotel.

The English woman laughed before saying, "The hotel? Well, It's right behind here, actually" The irony of the cashier's words hit me like a slap to the face.

"You just have to circle the building and it will be right in front of you." The woman smiled, not noticing my annoyance. We had been so fucking close! I hit my forehead with the palm of my hand at the same time as Joshua.

"Oooooooooh," Joshua said as if he had a mental disability.

I rolled my eyes again, before thanking the cashier and grabbing some of the bags Joshua was handing to me.

Sure enough, as we turned the corner the hotel's sign stared at us right in the face.

We hopped onto the revolving doors, with our plastic bags in hand. I had so many bags in my hands that the plastic ended up getting stuck to the glass when I tried to step out.

Joshua chuckled as I fought with the damn bags, tugging them away from the glass. Some asshole decided to use the fucking doors at the same time, and I ended up going in a second circle.

By the time I finally stepped out, Joshua was in tears from all of the laughter. I was really starting to hate revolving doors. Who the fuck invented them anyway?

I stared at him as he continued to clutch his stomach with the last few traces of laughter.

"Come on. I'm hungry." He let me know, chuckling in the process. I laughed sarcastically before following him towards the front desk.

We were directed towards a small kitchen. I started to rip off the cardboard from the cups, while Joshua heated up the water. I explained the process to him, and we got started. I had opened five containers, and turned to see that Joshua was planning on making all of them instead.

"Really?" I asked.

"You missed one," Joshua smiled cheekily towards the last remaining cup that hadn't been opened. I smiled and opened it up. We had definitely made a mess by the time all of the containers were filled with water. There was water and plastic wrappers everywhere.

We set all of the steaming cups on a black plastic tray and balanced it using both of our arms. Joshua started to walk backwards, towards the doorframe, half of the tray in hand. I had the other half balanced in between my own two hands.

The rest of the bags were really weighing my arms down. Joshua had the fabric bag hanging over his arm, which I was sure was ten times heavier than anything.

I was just sure that it wouldn't end well when Joshua started to climb the stairs backwards, tray still in hand. The foam cups wobbled with every step, as I tried to keep the damn things balanced.  I was sweating from the exertion by the time we finally reached the top.

"Remind me why we didn't just use the fucking elevator?" I asked.

"This is more fun" Joshua shrugged, making the cups wobble and sending my heart racing.

I cried victory too soon, because the tip of my flats decided to get stuck on the last step, making me trip. In a second, every single one of the foam cubs flew from the tray and topped down the stairs. Noodles, water, and foam cups were stranded throughout the entire grand staircase. The carpet would not look the same that was for sure.

My mouth dropped open and I inhaled a large gust of air. Holy shit! I looked at Joshua with wide surprised eyes. How the hell were we going to clean this up?

Joshua had a similar expression, laced with the hint of a smile. He started to point at me, clearly stating me as the one to blame.

"Oh, you're in tr-ou-ble."Joshua sang, still pointing at me with a smile. I shushed him and looked back down towards the mess.

I jumped up in the air with a yell when I heard Johnny's voice coming closer.

"You two look awfully chummy. What are you guys up to?" His tone sounded suspicious. I looked towards Joshua, pleading with him. Joshua winked before speaking.

"Oh, not much. Hey, Johnny, Lilly and I have our hands full here," He lifted his arms that had the bags, and looked towards Johnny.  "Mind getting something from downstairs for us? We forgot it..." I realized what Joshua's plan was and couldn't help but smile.

Johnny looked unsure, but answered none the less, "Sure..."

Before he noticed the mess he would be stepping on, I called out Johnny's name.

"Be careful." I told him with a smile. Johnny became distracted before taking the first step. The noodles did their work and Johnny slipped the minute he made contact. Joshua and I watched in wonder as Johnny's body slid down the entire staircase, butt hitting every step.

We couldn't contain our laughter when Johnny made it to the ground and stood up indignantly. He started to dust off his designer jeans, when he was sure that they were clean, he looked up towards our laughing faces.

"You two did this on purpose!" He accused.

That made us laugh even harder, because it was only half true. We hadn't made the mess on purpose, but we just couldn't help laughing. It was like those times when your parents accuse you of something that you haven't done, and you can't help but laugh, rendering yourself guilty.

I noticed that there were several pieces of noodles in Johnny's overly gelled hair, and tried to get Joshua's attention on it. We broke out into a sprint when Johnny started to make his way back up the stairs. Probably to strangle us both.

Joshua took hold of my hand and quickly pushed the elevator button. We jumped into the compartment at the exact moment that Johnny made it to the last step towards the top. He slipped though, and tried to grip the carpet before he went down.

I was going to need more air if I was planning to laugh any harder.

"Oh my God!" I yelled the moment that the elevator doors slid open. I pushed myself backwards towards the glass wall of the elevator, crouching away from the sight in front of me.

I vaguely registered that Gola was standing on the other side of the elevator doors. Her green face stared at me with narrowed eyes. All she was missing were the cucumber rounds.

"How was the blueberry picking?" She asked, hands on her hips, attention pointed towards Joshua.

"Fine." Joshua coughed and looked down at his shoes. I looked down at mine too and saw that a noodle had been stuck on the sole of my right shoe.

"Chip?" Joshua asked, pulling out a bag of chips from the store bag. Gola looked at the bag accusingly. You could tell that she was insulted.

"Joshua! Think of all the fat and grease in that thing!" She yelled.

"I'll take these before Gola starts looking a little green-Oh wait." I joked before grabbing hold of the chips.

Joshua smiled at the floor, trying to contain his laughter, while looking dissapointed about not being able to eat all of the crap I let him buy.

"I'll just be going now," I said as Joshua stepped out of the elevator and I stepped back in. I took hold of the bag containing the fabric and the rest of the junk food bags. I smiled at Joshua before I punched in my room number.

The doors closed and the last thing I saw was Gola grabbing a hold of the hand that Joshua had raised to wave at me.
