Chapter Eight: Mysterious Beanie

Minerva Ashton was my biggest enemy, the biggest bitch alive, and the official female version of the devil himself.

Legally though, she was my sister-in-law.

From seventh grade until my senior year of college, Minerva had been my number one competitor. I could guarantee that every nerd had that one Minerva Ashton in their life. The asshole who always made everything impossible, just to win.

Win what?

Obviously, I never knew. I was only aware that all hell would break loose whenever I happened to get a better test score or get a certain grade. I spent most of my school years skipping grades with Minerva trailing right behind me.

You could imagine my joy when I found out that I would be related to her. Yet, it was true, the slut managed to snag my only brother during our senior year of college. I never even saw it coming.

There was time when my brother was considered my best friend. He was the only guy who I would go to with all of my problems and the perfect older brother who took me out for ice cream when I was feeling down. He wasn't the slightest embarrassed that his twelve year old sister was a freshman at the same high school he went to, even if he was considered the most popular junior in school. You could imagine my shock when Minerva, an even nerdier girl than me, managed to marry a guy like my brother.

I thought I would never have to see her fugly face ever again when I threw my graduation cap in the air victoriously.

Seeing her at our family reunion, announcing her engagement to my brother, was something of a downer.

He did always have a soft side for the socially awkward

Taking a full glass of ice water to the motherloving face when I confronted her about being with my brother?

Yeah, that was another low in my life.

The bitch had threatened and accused me behind the rose bushes of my Aunt Mary's house, minutes after the announcement. She pointed her skinny fingers at my chest the entire time, promising me that I would never steal my brother from her.

I was in complete shock during the whole thing. I didn't even have my wits to put the bitch in her place.

Six months later, after she could call herself Mrs. Fenster, I never talked to my brother again.

When I finally had the chance to chat with him for a few minutes our whole relationship had changed.

Now the sibling wrecker waved her arms from across the room trying to get my attention.

Ready to ruin yet another thing in my life.

I could see it now, Minerva realizing that I had a better job than her current housewife position.

Minerva opening her big fat mouth to my parents, finding a way to get me fired, and taking my eighty grand away.

I would not let that happen.

What the hell was she even doing in Paris? Was my brother around?

Hope took over me as I scanned the room for a tall guy with dark brown hair the same shade as mine.

Nope, he was nowhere in sight.

I turned to Amanda, the only person still milling around the magazine stand before our flight took off.

I hated asking people for favors, even the friendly ones, which Amanda was beginning to be. But I had to do something and fast.

"Hey, do you think you could get everyone on the jet? We're running a little late on schedule and I have to...get this...thing for Joshua..." I needed to work on my lying skills when I was under pressure.

"Oh, yeah sure, no problem" Amanda smiled.

I was almost sure that she would question something, but with a helpful smile she began to get the rest of the people towards the doors that would lead to the jet.

My flats rushed towards Minerva, meeting her halfway.

"What are you doing here?" I demanded in a hard voice. I had given up trying to be civil to Minerva a long time ago.

"Oh, hi Lilly! No, I'm doing good and you?" She batted her eyelashes, taunting me. She lost some of her luster when she discreetly tucked an object behind her hand.

"I'm doing well," I spoke in between clenched teeth. I was starting to feel in a hurry. Could the jet leave without me? No, hopefully Amanda would make sure that didn't happen.

"I'm so very glad to hear that. Andrew's doing really great" At the mention of my brother, her lips widened into a grin, once again reminding me that she was the only person aside from my parents to give me any news from him.

"I'm very happy to hear that. I would ask you to let him know, but you wouldn't do that for me would you?" I accused.

Minerva's high throaty laugh echoed throughout the airport's waiting area, banging against the walls.

Why the hell had my brother married such a maniac?

Her mouth shut abruptly when she caught sight of something behind me.

I half turned, expecting anyone aside from Joshua to be walking towards us.

He had an eyebrow raised towards Minerva. After staring her down for a couple more seconds, he turned to me with an amused question in his eyes. Damn. What would I tell Minerva?

"The jet is almost leaving" He spoke from behind me.

"I'll be there in a minute," I spoke quickly, willing him to retreat with my eyes.

When had Joshua ever listened to me?

Instead, he strolled up so that he could stand next to me. Directing himself once again to Minerva, he spoke, "I'm Joshua. You are?"

I was extremely surprised that he didn't give her a flirty smile like I thought he would.

Oh right. He didn't do girls like us. Now I remembered that I was the exception only because he couldn't wait to get in my pants so that I could be fired.

That didn't stop Minerva from replying in a voice several levels higher than usual and twirling her hair awkwardly around her finger.

"Minerva Fenster!" She gushed extending a hand after tucking the mysterious object into the other palm. I registered the notion that Minerva was actually trying to flirt with a guy! In front of her very own sister-in-law!

Just to show that there were sluts of every form.

Joshua seemed unimpressed, even when he shortly shook her hand. He clearly wanted to get over it quickly.

Why did that make me feel...proud?

I didn't want to waste time thinking about my feelings; our flight was probably leaving that minute.

"Look it was fucking great to see you and all, but I have a flight to catch so-" I cut myself off by taking hold of Joshua's hand and sprinting towards the doors that we had to get to.

I could hear Minerva's confused voice behind me asking me what I was doing in Paris and at the same time telling Joshua that it had been so very nice to meet him. Giving her one last look, I finally caught sight of the object that had been traveling from hand to hand while we spoke.

No doubt that she would soon be snooping around asking questions.

Once we had climbed into the jet and taken a seat, Joshua wasted no time in waiting to grill me.

"So, what was up with the dork?" He questioned.

"That dork? Well, she's the devils spawn of course," I told him as if I were explaining the obvious.

"Yeah, I figured as much," Joshua waited for me to elaborate.

"She's sort of my sister in law. I hate her because she's a competitive sneaky bitch. You know the regular sister-in-law of every girl's dream" I finished.

Joshua chuckled and looked like he was about to reply. I never got to hear what he would say, because Gola's voice pleadingly called his name from some seats behind us.

Joshua didn't spare a second look and made his way over to her before the jet took off.

It didn't really bother me.  I was starting to feel uncomfortable about him.  He had already saved me twice in one day, but why?

"Obviously, to get me fired," I thought to myself.

How quickly I had begun to doubt his intentions. It scared me, because I needed to keep my guard up around Joshua Lachowski.

There was another thing that I never got to hear.

Why Minerva had been in Paris. It didn't make sense that she would take a trip without my brother.

I thought back to the object that she had been working so hard to hide.

A red beanie.

I almost popped a blood vessel when I realized why the object had seemed so familiar to me.

The Bum from the bus had been wearing the exact one.

Here's the eighth chapter! Sorry that it isn't full of total awkwardness and such, but this chapter is going to be pretty important in the near future! Plus, it sort of explains why Lilly is so judgmental against attractive people based on her experience with her brother. Woah I never thought I would get to eight chapters! Thanks so much for reading! Please Fan, Vote, and Comment for more Sugar Babe? ;)

I would love to thank _Skye_ fo the amazing banner! She won my banner contest so this chapter is also dedicated to her! I had two winners, so the next chapter will contain the second winner's work! I don't have a song for this chapter :O becuase I wrote it while my phone was on shuffle XD
