Chapter 29
Roxy sent out a group text to everyone excluding Sadie and David: Meet me on the hotel rooftop in an hour. David already knew to keep Sadie occupied until the designated time.
It was 10 am on their weekend off in Nashville and Roxy was planning a surprise baby shower for Sadie. She'd already roped Richie into helping and Dawn and Lorenza jumped at the chance to help as well. Jon, Tico and Hugh would be there to help in whatever capacity Roxy felt was necessary.
Roxy had sourced out all the necessary decorations and had left Richie and Jon in charge of inviting their friends from the area. The hotel's events planner was going to meet Roxy on the rooftop in half an hour, so she quickly dressed and pulled her hair into a ponytail.
"I'll see you at the bar, babe," Roxy said to Richie as he finished his breakfast, reading the newspaper. "Call me if you need anything." She grabbed her notebook, sunglasses and the card key.
"Hey!" he called as Roxy opened the door. "Don't I get a goodbye kiss this morning?" he pouted.
Roxy smirked but skipped back over to her fiance and slid into his lap. "Didn't you get enough kisses this morning? Oh, about half an hour ago?" she asked, feeling his hand roaming down her back.
"Never enough, baby," he said, pulling her close. When he'd taken his fill, Richie smacked her on the butt and said, "I'm a happy boy now. Off you go."
"Goofball," Roxy chuckled. "Love you, baby."
"Love you too, Rox," Richie replied, kissing her fingers. "Now get outta here or you'll be late. I'll see you soon."
Her phone vibrated with a message from David. Her brothers are landing in an hour. Hugh and Kelly are picking them up.
Roxy let a little whoop of joy as she headed out the door, that everything was falling into place. It had been a while since Roxy had seen Sadie's brothers and she was very happy that they'd agreed to fly in for the party as a surprise. The elevator pinged and Roxy stepped in, hitting the button for the rooftop.
Remember...keep her occupied, she texted David back.
When the doors opened, Roxy stepped out into the bright sunlight. Pulling her glasses down over her eyes, she scanned the area for her contact.
This is revenge, isn't it?
"Ms Walsh?"
Roxy yelped and jumped. "Oh my goodness, you scared me!" Roxy turned and saw a young man dressed in the hotel uniform. "Simon?" He smiled and nodded. "Please, call me Roxy," she said, holding her hand out.
"It's lovely to meet you, Roxy," Simon said, shaking her hand. "Welcome to the rooftop bar. I hope it will be appropriate for your needs tonight?"
Roxy followed Simon as he showed her around. There were lounge suites and scattered tables and chairs underneath a canopy of fairy lights. Off to one side were the lap pool and the larger plunge pool with accompanying loungers arranged around the outside. The bar and kitchen were placed in the middle to delineate the two areas.
"As you can see," Simon opened a side door into a large party room, "these tables will be moved outside and the catered food will be on display. All the lights can be controlled and their color changed as well. I believe you said the theme is red, black and gold...correct?"
"That's right," Roxy nodded. "The reveal will be later in the night so we want to keep it fairly neutral to start with." She checked her list and said, "The decorations? Have they arrived?"
"Yes, ma'am," Simon replied, gesturing to her over where his team was working diligently. "For the lighting," he flicked the fairy lights to gold then red... "Which would you prefer?"
"Oh! That's perfect, Simon!" Roxy gasped. "Um...I think gold would be appropriate."
"And the pool lights?" He laughed at the shocked expression on Roxy's face. "Yes, the pools light up as well." He used another remote to light up the pools first in red then gold. "Gold to match? We can do dry ice too for a gorgeous rising fog effect."
"Can the lights be alternating?" she asked. "Um, as much as I'd love to say yes to the dry ice, I think we'll be using the pool."
Simon noted the choices on his clipboard and pointed to the DJ booth. "DJ is getting set up and a couple of my best girls are finishing the special chair for the new Momma. Also you did request security?"
"Yes! My fiance and his friends have quite a few well-known people arriving tonight," Roxy said. "I should have a guest list for you by lunchtime today."
"Perfect! I'll just--"
"ROXY! I'm here!" Lorenza called from the doorway. "And I have breakfast donuts and coffee!"
"Hey, honey! I can always count on you to be on time," Roxy greeted the petite brunette. "Ooh! Coffee! Thank you!" Roxy bade Simon a quick goodbye and thanks before he stepped away and called for the elevator.
"We already know the men will be fashionably late," Lorenza giggled. "They always are."
"You and Dawn deserve a medal for putting up with them for all these years," Roxy grinned.
"Did I hear my name?" Roxy turned to see Dawn making her way over to the small group. Lorenza handed her a coffee also and Dawn thanked her with a kiss to the cheek before taking a donut.
"Yes, you did," Roxy said, hugging the older woman. "Well, girls...are we ready to do this?"
As Lorenza predicted, Jon and Richie didn't show for another two hours with Jon getting bossy as soon as he could dig his claws in. With a dirty look from Roxy, he plopped down on one of the loungers with a donut to "supervise" the process.
"Why isn't David up here helping?" He asked with a mouthful of the powdered dessert.
"Coz he's got his instructions to keep Sadie busy," Roxy reminded him. "Your job was to help Richie with hanging the decorations around the place."
"Eh...he's got it under control," he said. "Don't ya, King? Anyway...why didn't you get the hotel staff to do all of this shit?! It would all be done by now and I'd still be in bed."
"Because it's more personal if we do it," Roxy said. "If you're not going to help, Jon, I can call Tico to come get you outta my hair."
"I bet Lema's still in bed," Richie chuckled. "Sadie's sex drive is back tenfold!"
"Is that why he asked me for an ice pack the other day?" Dawn asked. "I thought he was walking a little funny."
Everyone laughed and Richie mocked David, limping around the area. "My balls! She's killing my fucking balls!"
"Just like you were complaining about your dick when they didn't tell Rox about the pregnancy?" Jon smirked at his friend.
"What?!" Roxy asked, confused as to what they were talking about.
"They made him keep you...occupied...every time you got curious about Sadie," Jon said. "David's words were 'keep her fucking busy or busy fucking', I believe."
Richie groaned, tossing his empty takeout coffee cup at Jon. "Fuckin' big mouth," he groused.
Roxy lowered her sunglasses at him and said, "I didn't hear you complaining at the time, sweetie."
With zero help from Jon, the decorations were finished and the bartender had arrived to begin prepping the bar. A couple members of Simon's team began reorganizing the loungers and tables, setting up the present table in the corner and a special cabana with a U-shaped sofa for the parents-to-be.
Roxy thanked everyone for their help and they all dispersed to start getting ready for the party. Simon, who had reappeared to check over the progress, reassured them his team would finish up and take over from there.
"Thanks for your help, baby," Roxy cooed at Richie, curling up in his arms in the elevator.
"You're welcome," he replied. "Maybe you can show me how grateful you are in the shower?"
"I think I can do that," Roxy replied, skimming her hand down the front of his shorts.
"Hey! What about me?!" Jon exclaimed. "Where's my gratification shower?"
Roxy turned to Jon, seeing the mischief in his eyes and said, "You didn't do diddly-squat other than eat all the donuts. So you and," she reached for his right hand and held it in front of his face, "Mrs Right will have to have some solo time tonight." She grinned and pecked him on the cheek as Richie chortled away happily behind her. "Aren't you sorry your wife isn't coming into town tonight?"
"Regretting every moment of it now," he huffed and stepped out of the elevator first. "Have fun you two. I'll see you in a couple of hours."
"Don't forget, Jon," Roxy said as they followed him down the hallway. "You're on meet and greet duties first up." He waved over his head before stepping into his room.
"Is he cranky with me now?" she asked Richie as he opened their door.
"Nah," he replied, holding the door open, stepping in behind her. "You'd know about it if you were."
*~*SADIE*~*
Sadie slid her arms around David's waist, smiling at his reflection in the mirror as he shaved. "No chance of us just ordering room service and staying in tonight?"
"Trust me, babygirl," David replied, cleaning off his razor. "You'll love what's in store. Plus you've been begging to check out the hotel's pool and it was the one night I could get them to close it off. Just for us. Swimming and dinner under the stars. What could be better?"
"I know of a thing or two," she chuckled and snaked her hand under his towel, squeezing him.
He hissed in a breath as she gently stroked him. "Baby, you're playing with fire."
"Am I?" she asked, leaning in to nibble on his neck.
"Damn, I've created a monster."
"Oh, you have not," she said, her breath hot on his ear. "You've created a goddess."
She felt his hand in her hair, gripping it tightly before he yanked her head back. Her eyes flew open as he growled, "Be a good girl and go get dressed." He smacked her ass and elicited a moan from her lips. "I'll be done here in a minute."
Sadie sauntered from the bathroom, tossing her towel at him and pawing at the outfit laid out for her. A skimpy black bikini. Very...plain. But the dress...an animal print wrap matching with dressy black sandals.
Having to keep her pregnancy a secret was the worst. It limited what she could wear, where and when. But David was trying his best to make up for the limited public activity so there was little she could be mad about.
Dave stared at her intently, leaning against the doorway and smirked as Sadie pulled on the bikini. "You're so beautiful, baby. How'd I get so damn lucky?"
Sadie tied the top just under her breasts, which had grown three cup sizes, and showed them off to her fiance. "I'm pretty sure you would've followed me home that night on all fours..."
"Tongue dragging all the way," David chuckled.
She hummed in response and pulled the dress down over her curves. The animal print fabric was soft and stretchy. It was unlike anything she'd worn before but it felt amazing against her skin. "Nice choice, darlin'."
David took her hand, kissing it softly as he stared into her eyes. "Fucking gorgeous..."
"For you," she replied, resting her hands on her belly. "I'm all yours." She sat and watched him dress, struggling to contain her lust for him. Once her first trimester and sickness had passed, they're sex life had thankfully returned to normal.
He offered her his arm and she looped hers through it. "Shall we go, beautiful?"
"We shall," she said, following him out of their hotel room and into the elevator. He punched the rooftop button and lowered his lips onto her, groaning into the kiss. His hands slid to cup her ass, causing her to whimper and rock into his hips.
David pulled away and rested his forehead against hers. "You're so damn cute, it's like you're begging me to fuck you right here in this elevator."
"We could," she panted, "There's a camera..."
"How do you know there isn't someone watching right now?" he asked, his hands kneading her ass.
"Because I asked," she replied. "I have a friend who works in security. I asked her to give us a clean slate for the night."
David laughed and straightened. "You're so damn naughty." He smirked and slapped her ass, barely allowing her to catch her breath between each strike.
"Baby!" she giggled, wrapping her arms around his neck to keep from falling over. "This isn't fair."
He scooped her up into his arms and winked at her. "I've got you, don't I?"
She kissed him, looping her legs around his waist. His hands slid under her ass, keeping her from sliding down. She moaned into the kiss as he ground into her core.
The elevator pinged and he set Sadie back on her feet, leaving her breathless and whimpering. They were immediately greeted by a pair of servers carrying one drink each on a tray. David handed her a tall glass with chunks of pineapple and strawberry floating in pale pink liquid.
"Here you go, baby."
"Thank you," she said curiously, taking a long sip of the sweet drink.
They walked outside, blinking in the sunset. Sadie wasn't sure what she expected but it wasn't this. There was a large white gazebo with fairy lights, a pure white sofa, a fancy dinner service and a bouquet of flowers in the middle.
A red carpet stretched out from under the cover of the roof and over to the table. Red, black and gold decor themed all she took in...red velvet curtains and ropes draped along the windows and doorways.
But it was the people that brought tears to Sadie. Their friends were cheering and snapping photos, whistling and clapping happily. Colton, Gabby and Lily were closest to the front lines, waiting to launch themselves at their Dad and soon to be stepmom.
"Oh my God," she breathed. "It's beautiful."
"Not as beautiful as you," David said, kissing her hand. "It's about time we shared our special news...with everyone."
Sadie scanned the room and found Roxy beaming at her, waving excitedly. She was about to push past Keith and his wife when a male voice called out, "Hey little sis!"
She spun around and nearly lost her footing, locking eyes with her oldest brother, Liam, and let out a high-pitched squeal of happiness. "Li-Li!" Sadie waddled over and was scooped up by her brother, crying into his shoulder and hugging him.
"You look like Mom when she was pregnant with you," Liam choked out, kissing his sister's cheek and setting her back on her feet.
"Is Shane here too?" Sadie asked, looking over Liam's shoulder.
"No...he stayed back at home," he answered, "After the last family run in, he didn't want to ruin anything."
"Oh," she frowned, not sure how to feel about that.
"He'll come around one day," he promised her. "I'll talk to him. Looks like Emmy found your fiance..."
Sadie turned around to see her five year niece talking to David. "Trev's here too?"
Liam nodded and led her over to the middle brother, currently engaged in guitar debate with Richie. "Trevor!" she squealed, flinging her arms around his neck. "I can't believe you're here!"
"Sweetie, I wouldn't miss this for the world," he smiled, kissing her cheek. Sadie was enveloped into a whirlwind of hugs and kisses, words of love and congrats.
Roxy cleared her throat into a microphone and raised her glass as eyes turned to her. "Sadie...Dave...where are you?" She smiled at her friends who joined her side. "I wanted to make a toast..."
Everyone followed suit and raised their drinks, cheering Sadie and Dave. Roxy looked through the crowd and counted her blessings. Never did she ever expect to be rubbing shoulders with the likes of Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman, Big Kenny and Kid Rock, not to mention a plethora of well known New Jersey people and friend's of the couple, Sadie's brothers and niece and the Bon Jovi family that had become their own.
All the Jovi kids hung in one group to the side, murmuring amongst themselves, no doubt cooking up some scheme or prank together, not terribly interested in the announcement.
"I just want to say to my best friend...and the man of her dreams," Roxy started, looking at Sadie curled against David's side and swallowed heavily over the tears that already threatened to fall, "that I'm so, so happy to have you in my life and I can't wait to meet your little one. Oh...shit...I'm gonna be an auntie!! I love you guys!"
Sadie teared up and wrapped her arm around Roxy, resting her head on the blonde's shoulder. "You're gonna be a Godmother! Not just an auntie," she corrected, kissing her best friend's cheek.
"Do I get a fancy wand?" Roxy asked, laughing through her tears.
"Yeah...Richie's," Sadie giggled.
"Oh, I'm more than happy with that!"
"Well, I hope so, baby," Richie called out, making the crowd laugh.
"Sooo...I guess it's time for the gender reveal?" Roxy asked their family and friends that were gathered.
Liam and Trevor set down the two large stars filled with guitar picks. Roxy handed the mic to Liam. "Alright! So when you all came in, you were given a guitar pick and told to drop it into either the boy star or the girl star, guessing the gender of their baby. With 45 votes...everyone is taking pity on Dave for being outnumbered and wants y'all to have a boy. Only 25 think it'll be a girl. So how about we find out?!"
The crowd of friends and family cheered and whistled. The prearranged signal was given from behind the crowd.
Jon grabbed the mic next and jumped up next to Roxy. "I need a countdown, everyone! I don't wanna see one person sitting quiet. Get up off your asses and count down in 5....4....3....2...1!!!!!!"
Sadie and David linked hands as fireworks shot up into the night sky...silver and gold sparkles lighting up in quick succession. Roman candles, Palm Trees, Dragon Eggs and Glitter bombs, all timed with Guns 'N Roses Sweet Child Of Mine, one of Sadie's favourite songs, shone brightly against the inky black sky. The pop and crackle hung in the night air, overshadowed only by the gasps and exclamations from the gathered party-goers.
There was a slight pause and David said, "So...does that mean we're having...what?? A unicorn?"
"That wouldn't surprise me," Sadie chuckled.
The track changed and a loud report was heard moments before the opening chords of The Boys Are Back In Town, the white hot flash syncing perfectly with the guitar parts. The fiery ball from a Comet shot up from the ground before a barrage of blue streaked the sky with rippling lines heralding the imminent arrival of a new Bryan son.
David's eyes widened and he threw his arms up, whooping and hollering with men coming up to slap him on the shoulder. He grabbed Sadie and pulled her into his arms, burying his face into her neck and tears falling.
"We're gonna have a son, babygirl," he cried, his hair shielding his face from the crowd. "I fucking love you so much."
"Love you more, Papa Bear," Sadie whispered and kissed his cheek.
David was ripped from Sadie's arms as his brothers from the band surrounded him, knowing how much this would mean to him. Liam and Trevor joined in, hugging Dave and sharing in the joy of a new little man soon to join them.
Roxy hugged her friend and laughed as the group of men hoisted David to their shoulders. "Anyone would think it was all his doing," she chuckled. "I'm so happy for you, honey!"
"I mean I'm just carrying the baby for 9 months...and went through the morning sickness...and cramps...and back pain!" Sadie called out to the guys.
"I don't mean to interrupt," a soft voice was heard beside them. The friends turned and saw Nicole beaming at them. "I just wanted to offer our congratulations. Sadie, you're glowing, I hope you know that."
"I'll leave you two to chat," Roxy said, slipping away to stand to one side, leaning against the wall and letting the evening wash over her. She took the mic one last time and said, "Everyone...just so you know the buffet is officially open...Pool... open bar...relax and have a great time!"
"And you!" A pair of arms wrapped around her waist and lifted her feet off the ground. "Are the best!" David, cheeks pink and already working up a sweat, swung Roxy in a circle. "You went beyond anything."
"I'd do anything for that girl. You know that, right?!" Roxy said. "That includes hiding the body should you do wrong by her. Understand?" Roxy smiled a sickly-sweet smile at the not-so-veiled threat.
David laughed and pressed his lips to her cheek. "I expect nothing less. Go enjoy yourself! Mingle. Swim. Eat."
"I will," she nodded. "I just need to process this for a minute. Go be with your Baby-Mama." She smiled at him and watched the blond curls disappear into the crowd of well-wishers.
"Everything okay?"
Roxy startled a little when Dorothea shoulder bumped her. "Dot...hey," Roxy said. "Yeah...I will be. I just needed a little time out."
"Can I help? I'm a good listener and I know this can be a little...overwhelming."
"Oh, it's not so much the party," Roxy said, her voice starting to wobble a little. "It's a little more...personal than that, I guess."
"Oh?"
Roxy turned away a little, embarrassed at the tears that stung her eyes. She looked up at the sky, desperately blinking them away. "I just...I just wish that I could give this," she waved her hands around indicating the party in general, "to Richie. To be able to give him a child and see the joy on his face that David has tonight."
"Aw, Roxy," Dot said, drawing her into a hug. "All is not lost just yet, is it? The doctors haven't said never, have they?"
"No...but...," Roxy hiccuped.
"I wouldn't bring it up tonight...you and Richie could start with the examinations for IVF? See if you have viable eggs. You could always use a surrogate that's close to you..."
"I guess," Roxy conceded. "Shit, Dot...I'm sorry," she said, wiping at her eyes, "You caught me in a weak moment. It doesn't normally get to me this much."
Dot hugged Roxy. "It's an emotional night. But...If Richie isn't...viable...there are two men more fertile than him. Haven't you ever wondered why he only had one kid whereas David is having his fourth and Jon has three?"
"He told me it was Heather's choice." Roxy frowned in confusion.
"She wanted another one...he couldn't give it to her," Dot admitted, "...or didn't want to."
"I guess I'll have to have a lengthy talk with Richie then," Roxy said, glancing over to her fiance who was enjoying himself with Big Kenny and Keith. "Dot, if you'll excuse me, I think I'll freshen up a little before I rejoin the party. Thanks for listening." Roxy wandered off inside to find the bathrooms and fix her makeup, thinking about what the older woman had said.
