Chapter 46

As soon as the nurses informed us that she was now in her own room and was allowed to have visitors, my heart sputtered with excitement. I can't wait to see her, talk to her, feel her, kiss her. That's all I have been wanting to do.

God, it feels like I haven't seen her in weeks.

All three of us step into the elevator, and I quickly press the button to the floor she is on. I glance over at Reese and Maxen, who are leaning quietly against the elevator wall. Even though Maxen put Wren through hell in the past, I really am glad he is here. I don't know how many times I have thanked him—but I know it was a lot. He has definitely proven to me that he has changed.

Just as the doors were about to close, we hear someone yell for us to hold the doors. Reese reaches his hand out, keeping the doors from closing, and I groan internally. Why would he do that? All I want to do is get to Wren.

A woman with two young kids enters the elevator. "Thank you so much. I really didn't want to wait for the next one," she says, adjusting the small girl on her hip before pressing the floor she wanted.

"No problem," Reese replies tiredly, letting a yawn escape his lips. I know exactly how he feels.

The elevator doors open and the woman and her two kids step out. "Once again thank you," she tells Reese before the doors close again. Two more floors to go.

My eyes land on my reflection in the elevator doors. If the dark circles under my eyes isn't an indication of how tired I am, then I don't know what is. I run my hand through my already disheveled hair and sigh.

The elevator doors open and we all step out. I hurry to the nurses station and ask for Wren's room number.

The older nurse types in Wren's name. "She's in 204," She says pointing me in the right direction. I mutter a thank you and head down the hall.

It doesn't take us long to find her room. When we enter, a nurse was just throwing away some bloody bandages. She looks up and places her finger on her lips. "She just fell asleep," she whispers. "Poor thing is exhausted."

I bet she is. She has been through a lot.

"Can we see her?" Reese's hopeful voice sounds from behind me.

She glances over her shoulder and nods. "If she needs anything, please don't hesitate to ask. I'll just be down the hall."

"Thank you," Maxen adds as the nurse walks out the door.

When my eyes land on Wren, my heart breaks at the sight. Her face is so swollen and bruised, yet she was recognizable.

"Jesus," I hear someone say from behind me, but am too shocked to decipher who it was.

I walk over to the side of the bed, careful not to bump into any of the equipment attached to her, and pull the chair closer to the bed and take a seat.

I hesitate for a moment before taking her hand into mine. Her eyes flutter open at the sudden contact. She smiles when her eyes land on me. "Hey," she cringes at the sound of how raspy her voice sounds.

"Hey," my voice quivers. I can't hide my emotions anymore when it comes to her. Better yet, I don't want to hide them. "How are you feeling?"

She clears her throat and shift uncontrollably in her bed, wincing a little in the progress. "I've been better."

A frown makes its way onto my face.

"Don't do that," she says softly. "I hate when you make that face. It's unattractive."

I don't miss the hint of amusement in her voice and chuckle. "You never cease to amaze me," I tell her truthfully.

She smiles warmly, "I know."

"Do you need anything," Reese asks and her gaze shifts to him and she shakes her head. "Are you sure? I could get you something to drink—."

"Reese, I'm fine," she says reassuringly, cutting him off. "If I need anything, I'll let you know. I promise."

Reese responds with a nod and sits in the chair at the foot of the bed.

Her gaze never comes back to me and I immediately know why. Maxen.

Maxen stands awkwardly behind Reese, staring at the floor. Refusing to look up at Wren.

His body tenses when she whispers his name, but his eyes never leave the floor. "Maxen," she says a little louder, finally getting his attention. When he looks up, you could see the tears threatening to escape.

"I know I shouldn't be here," he starts, only to be cut off mid sentence by none other than Wren, herself.

She smiles and opens her arms welcomely, "Come here."

A smiles it's way on to my own face and I lean back in my chair. It doesn't surprise me that this is happening. Something inside me always knew it would. I just didn't expect it to be like this.

"What?" Maxen's voices sounds surprised.

Wren chuckles, "I said, come here."

Maxen's gaze jumps from me to Reese before doing what he was told. Wren engulfs him in a hug and whispers something in his ear and he lets his emotions fly free. She rubs his back soothingly as he buries his face in the crook of her neck as he sobs.

"Thank you," she finally says as she pulls away.

He sniffs and wipes away the tears he just released and looks between Reese and I. "If you tell anyone about this, I will kill you."

We both know it's a broken threat and laugh.

"I'm serious," he states, trying to make himself sound scarce.

Wren chuckles and shakes her head. "Well I'm glad to see you guys getting along so well."

Maxen shrugs, "Sometimes things change."

"Sometimes people change," I counter, earning me a smile and all the hatred I felt toward this man melts away.

Yes, I still don't like the way he treated, Wren. It bothers me to no end. But if she could forgive him, then so could I.

"This is nice," Wren says. "I could get use to this."

We all chuckle at her statement, although I have to agree. It is nice not being at each other's throats. For once in my life, I feel...content.

It's been a week since Wren was admitted into the hospital and today she gets to come home. Of course she is under stocked orders from the doctor—that she doesn't like at all—but knows it's for the best.

The swelling in her face has gone down tremendously, leaving the bruises behind.

"Are you ready," I ask as I finish pack up the rest of her things.

"Yes," she exaggerates. "I hate hospitals. I hope I never have to see one again."

"Well you'll have no choice when the baby comes," I deadpan.

"You know what I mean," she sighs rubbing her belly with a smile. "I can't wait to met him."

I ended up telling her the babies gender a few days after the incident. She was a static.

"Me either," I tell her truthfully, zipping up her suitcase. "All packed."

"Great," she smiles getting of the bed. "I can't wait to sleep in my own bed," she huffs. "They really should make those things more comfortable."

"Not as uncomfortable as those chairs," I snort. "Try sleeping in one of those." Those things are more uncomfortable than the bed.

"I don't want to hear it. I offered for you to come sleep with me, but you insisted you were okay," she retorts, leaving me standing in the room, alone. She right though, she made several offers for me to sleep with her and I declined. I didn't want to make her more uncomfortable than she already was.

"Are you coming?" She shouts from the hallway, pulling me from my thoughts and I quickly emerge from the room, with her suitcase in hand.

When we finally made our way out to the car, I opened her door allowing her to slip in and before I could close the door, someone calls out her name. We both look to see who it was and were surprised to see, Jen of all people, making her way towards us.

I clench my jaw in annoyance. I haven't seen her since that day and I was hoping to keep it that way.

"I'm sorry," she says. "I know neither one of you want to see me but...I wanted to see if she was okay." You can see the sincerity in her eyes.

Wren places her hand on my tense one and I snap my attention to her. She gives me a reassuring smile and stands. "I'm actually glad you came," she tells her. "It's because of you...that I am able to go home and I want to thank you."

I've said it before and I'll say it again. This woman never ceases to amaze me.

"I'm glad your safe," Jen says softly and turns her attention to me. "I know sorry doesn't make it all better. But for what it's worth, I'm sorry for everything."

I nod, not knowing what to say. I'm still salty about the whole situation leading up to this point and don't want to cut her down.

"Here," Wren hands her a piece of paper. "If you ever need to talk, you can call me. I'm a good listener."

Jen seems a bit stunned by Wren's actions, but not. Wren has a heart of gold and would help anyone in need.

"Thank you," Jen says softly, taking the piece of paper and placing it in her purse. "Well I have to get going. I have a lot to do."

We watch as she disappears around the corner.

"That was nice of her," Wren states, slipping back into her seat.

I don't say anything around the car and slid my large frame behind the wheel and start the engine. Even thought that was nice of her, I still don't like her. I forgive her for everything she has done, but I don't like her.

We pull in front of the house and I get out. I open Wren's door and help her out the car.

When we enter the house, everyone yells surprise, taking us both by surprise and were immediately surrounded by friends and family.

Wren laughs and winces at the same time, holding her belly.

"Are you okay," I ask a bit concerned.

"Yes," she nods. "It just hurts a little when I laugh."

"I'm going to kill him," I grunt. He should know better. She just got out of the hospital.

"No need," she places her hand on my arm, "he's only trying to be a good friend. I'm fine, I swear."

I plaster a fake reassuring smile on my face. What she doesn't know won't hurt.
