The Perfect Date II
*The Doctors POV*
Alex, Margaret, and I entered the restaurant Margaret wished to go to for the last time. We walked over to our table, Alex sitting next to me and Margaret sitting on the opposite side. "Here we are, out on a date, and you haven't even asked my proper name."
"It's not a date!" I rolled my eyes at her, "not with you at least." I beamed at Alex, who snorted. "What's your name?"
"Blon. I am Blon Fel Fotch Passameer-Day Slitheen. That's what it'll say on my death certificate." Does Margaret really think she can change our minds? I'm not letting her escape this time. It's not my fault her planet's got a death penalty.
I smiled at Margaret pleasantly, "nice to meet you, Blon." I looked down at my menu, trying to figure out what I wanted to eat.
"I'm sure." I knew Margaret was rolling her eyes, but I didn't bother to look up from my menu. "Look," Margaret pointed out the window to some flat, "that's where I was living as Margaret." Alex and I looked out the window, staring at her 'home'. "Nice little flat. Over there. On the top. Next to the one with the light on. Two bedrooms, bayside view." Alex and I turned back around, "I was rather content. Don't suppose I'll see it again." I shrugged, not my problem. I went to take a sip of my wine, but Alex snatched it out of my hands, switching mine and Margaret's glasses.
"Guess not." Alex grinned at her and looked back at the menu.
"Thank you." Margaret says sarcastically to Alex.
"Pleasure." Alex returns Margaret's sarcastic attitude.
Margaret turned to me, "tell me then, Doctor, what do you know of our species?"
"Only what I've seen." I shrugged, watching Alex study the menu.
"Did you know, for example, in extreme cases when her life is in danger, a female Raxacoricofallapatorian can manufacture a poison dart within her own finger." Margaret pointed her finger at me and a dart flew out of her fingertip, but Alex caught it without looking up from the menu. Thanks for saving me again, sweetheart. I beamed at Alex, who smirked at me.
"I do now." I sent Margaret a pleasant smile, which was not returned.
"Just checking." Margaret sent me a smug smile, "and one more thing, just between us," Margaret looked around the restaurant as Alex and I leaned forward. "As a final resort, the excess poison can be exhaled through the lungs." Margaret sent a green gas out of her mouth. But Alex was a few steps ahead of Margaret, again. She whipped out breath spray and sprayed Margaret's mouth.
"Margaret, my brother was a monster hunter, I'm very aware of the tricks your species plays." Alex glared at her, "now then, what d'you think, love? Steak looks good. Steak and french fries?" Alex turned to me and I nodded in return. Sounds good to me.
"Public execution is a slow death. They prepare a thin acetic acid, lower me into the cauldron, and boil me. The acidity is perfectly gauged to strip away the skin. Internal organs fall out into the liquid. And I become soup. And still alive. Still screaming." Still, not my problem.
"Do you think that's nice table conversation?" Alex tilted her head at Margaret. "We don't make the law, Margaret."
"But you deliver it." Margaret snapped back, "will you stay to watch?"
"What else can I do?" I shook my head at Margaret. Alex would probably have a good time. She loves horror movies. Don't think Margaret getting turned to soup would bother Alex all that much.
That didn't stop Margaret from begging, "the Slitheen family's huge. There's a lot more of us, all scattered off the world. Take me to them. Take me somewhere safe."
"But then you'll just start again." I shook my head at Margaret again. I wasn't risking putting every human in danger just so Margaret can live happily ever after.
"I promise I won't." Margaret whispered to us.
"You've been in that skin suit too long. You've forgotten. There used to be a real Margaret Blaine. You killed her and stripped her and used the skin. You're pleading for mercy out of a dead woman's lips." Alex snarled at Margaret.
Margaret turned to Alex, "perhaps I have got used to it. A Human life. An ordinary life. That's all I'm asking. Give me a chance, Alex... I can change." Doubt it.
"I don't believe you, not for a second." Alex raised her eyebrows at her.
"I promise you, I've changed since we last met, Alex, Doctor. There was this girl, just today, young thing. Something of a danger. She was getting too close. I felt the blood lust rising, just as the family taught me, I was going to kill her without a thought. And then," Margaret paused, "I stopped. She's alive somewhere right now, she's walking around this city because I can change, I did change. I know I can't prove it."
I tilted my head at her, "I believe you."
"Then you know I'm capable of better." I could tell by Margaret's eyes she wasn't ever going to change.
"It doesn't mean anything." Alex shrugged.
"I spared her life." Margaret continued. I don't know how Margaret hasn't noticed that she's not getting anywhere with me and Alex. We're taking you out for your last meal, just enjoy it.
"You let one of them go, but that's nothing new. Every now and then, a little victim's spared. Because she smiled, because he's got freckles, because they begged, and that's how you live with yourself. That's how you slaughter millions. Because once in a while, on a whim, if the wind's in the right direction, you happen to be kind. You're never going to change Margaret. It's who you are." Alex shook her head at Margaret.
"Only a killer would know that." Margaret growled at Alex. Oh, my Alex was no killer. I looked at Alex from the corner of my eye and I could tell she was taken back by what Margaret had said. I placed my hand on Alex's knee, squeezing it slightly to try and to comfort her. "Is that right? From what I've seen, your happy-go-lucky little life leaves devastation in its wake. Always moving on cause you dare not to look back. Playing with so many people's lives, you might as well be a god." Margaret continued. "And you're right, Alex, you're absolutely right. Sometimes you let one go. Let me go." Alex and I didn't answer Margaret, just stared at her awkwardly. "In the family Slitheen, we had no choice. I was made to carry out my first kill at thirteen. If I'd refused, my father would have fed me to the Venom Grubs." I snapped my head, looking around the restaurant, what is that noise? "If I'm a killer, it's because I was born to kill, it's all I know!" Alex looked at me and we raised our eyebrows, trying to figure out what the hell that noise was. "Are you even listening to me?" No. Not at all.
"Can you hear that?" Alex scrunched up her face. Oh she looks so cute when she does that. There's definitely a time and place to drool over her.
"I'm begging for my life!" Margaret stared at us, completely shocked that we don't care.
"No, shut up and listen." I stared at the glasses on the table, watching them begin to shake. Out of nowhere, the glass windows broke and I pulled Alex to me, shielding her with my body. The three of us hurried out of the restaurant, the sound of screaming and smashing filling our ears.
"The handcuffs!" Margaret called to me. I didn't even notice she was falling behind. I turned around, using the sonic to take her handcuff off.
"Don't think you're running away." Alex growled as she grabbed Margaret's wrist.
"Oh, I'm sticking with you two." I grabbed Alex's hand and we ran back towards the Tardis. "Some date this turned out to be!" Really though, it's not a date. I felt my eyes widening as I was a huge lightning bolt shot out of the Tardis and into the sky.
"It's the rift. The rift's opening!" The ground was crackling beneath our feet as we ran faster to the Tardis. "What the hell are you doing?" I yelled to Jack as he ran around the Tardis frantically.
"It just went crazy!" Alex ran over to Jack, trying to assist him in any way possible.
I ran to the console, "it's the rift! Time and space are ripping apart. The whole city's gonna disappear!" I jumped back as the console exploded in my face.
"It's the extrapolator! I've disconnected it but it's still feeding off the engine! It's using the Tardis. I can't stop it!" Jack shook his head at me.
"Nevermind Cardiff, it's gonna rip open the planet!" Alex yelled, running over to me.
"What is it? What's happening?!" I looked up as I heard Rose yelling.
"Oh, just little me!" Margaret grabbed Rose by the neck with her Slitheen claw. Jack and Alex moved forward, trying to help Rose escape Margaret, "one wrong move and she snaps like a promise."
"I should've known." Alex growled at Margaret.
"I've had you bleating all night, poor baby, now shut it." Margaret fixed her eyes on Jack,"you, fly boy, put the extrapolator at my feet." Jack looked at me as Margaret tightened her grip around Rose's neck, making her whimper. I heard a small growl and looked down at Alex, who already had her wand out and was ready to rip Margaret's head off. She was holding onto the railing with her other hand. Don't do this, not yet, I prayed. I nodded at Jack to do what Margaret says and he does, putting the extrapolator at her feet. "Thank you. Just as I planned."
"I thought you needed to blow up the nuclear power station." Rose choked out.
"Failing that, if I were to be arrested, then anyone capable of tracking me down would have considerable technology of their own. Therefore, they would be captivated by the extrapolator. Especially a magpie mind like yours, Doctor. So the extrapolator was programmed to go to Plan B!" Margaret tightened her grip and Rose whimpered again. Alex slowly inched closer, earning glares from Margaret. "To lock onto the nearest alien power source and open the rift. And what a power source it found. I'm back on schedule, thanks to you."
"The rift's gonna convulse. She'll destroy the whole planet." Alex shook her head at me.
"And you with it!" Margaret grinned evilly at us, "while I ride this board over the crest of the inferno all the way to freedom. Stand back boys, surf's up."
"Of course, opening the rift means you'll pull this ship apart."
"So sue me." Margaret shrugged to me. This bright light escaped the Tardis and I sighed. I bit my lip, knowing what was going to happen to Alex. Oh I'm so sorry Alex...
"It's not just any old power source. It's the Tardis. My Tardis. The best ship in the universe." I replied calmly to Margaret.
"It'll make wonderful scrap." Margaret laughed at me.
"What's that light?" Rose asked while peering over Margaret's arm.
"The heart of the Tardis. This ship's alive. You've opened its soul." I continued talking calmly to Margaret. I heard a loud sigh, I turned around to see Alex half conscious on the floor. Jack rushed over to Alex, trying to help.
"It's," she paused, "so bright..." Margaret said, staring into the light.
"Look at it, Margaret."
"Beautiful." Margaret tilted her head.
"Look inside, Blon Fel Fotch. Look at the light." Margarets grip on Rose loosened and she ran over to Jack.
Margaret smiled at me, "thank you." And just like that, her skin suit fell to the floor. I hurried around the console, trying to close up the Tardis' heart.
"Don't look, stay there, close your eyes!" I ordered Jack and Rose. "Now, Jack, come on, shut it all down. Shut down!" Jack left Alex's side and did as he was told. "Rose, that panel over there, turn all the switches to the right." I sighed as the shaking stopped. "Nicely done. Thank you, all." I crouched down to Alex, who smiled up at me. I kissed her forehead as she sat up.
Rose walked over to the body suit, "what happened to Margaret?"
"Must've gotten burnt up. Carried out her own death sentence." Jack walked over to the suit as well, staring down at it.
"No. I don't think she's dead." I shook my head at the two.
"Then, where'd she go?" Rose tilted her head at me. I helped Alex up, joining the two by Margarets skin suit.
"She looked into the heart of the Tardis and even I don't know how strong that is."
I looked at Alex, who shrugged, "pretty powerful."
I continued, "this the ship's telepathic, like I told you. Gets inside your head. Translates alien languages. Maybe the raw energy can translate all sorts of thoughts." I knelt down next to where Margaret was standing and pulled out an egg. "Here she is!"
"She's an egg?" Rose scrunched up her face, staring in disbelief.
"Returned back to her childhood." Alex said, grinning at me.
"She's an egg?" Jack questioned.
"She can start again! Live her life from scratch. If we take her home, give her to a different family, tell 'em to bring her up properly, she might be all right!" I held onto the egg, proudly.
"Or she might be worse." Alex giggled, staring at the egg.
"That's her choice." I raised my eyebrows.
"She's an egg." Rose said, still in shock.
"She's an egg." Alex nodded to Rose, who was still staring at the egg in disbelief.
"Oh my god, Mickey!" Rose yelled and she bolted out of the Tardis. Oh please tell me she didn't forget about Ricky.
Alex sat down in the jump seat, holding onto the egg, "are you alright, sweetheart?" I ran a hand through Alex's hair.
"Yeah I'm alright." Alex smiled at me, "Tardis got inside my head, warned me that was going to happen." I rubbed my hand along the console, oh my beautiful ship is absolutely amazing.
Rose came back into the Tardis, I could tell she had been crying. Carefully, I turned to her, "we're all powered up. We can leave. Opening the rift filled us up with energy. We can go. If that's alright?"
"Yeah, fine." Rose swallowed, Alex got out of the jump seat, going over to Rose, sensing something was wrong. She grabbed her hand as Rose leaned her head on Alex's shoulder.
I bit my lip, "how's Mickey?"
"He's okay. He's gone." Rose looked away, awkwardly.
"Do you wanna go and find him? We'll wait." Alex smiled at Rose, trying to comfort her.
Rose shrugged, "no need. He deserves better." Alex looked at me and nodded.
"Off we go, then. Always moving on." I pulled the lever, programming the Tardis to drop Margaret off.
"Next stop, Raxacoricofallapatorius. Now, you don't often get to say that." Jack smirked as Alex balances the egg on the console.
"We'll just stop by and pop her in the hatchery. Margaret the Slitheen can live her life again! A second chance."
"That'd be nice." Rose mumbled as the engines filled the room.
Alex, Jack, and I hurried off with the egg to a hatchery in Raxacoricofallapatorius. Rose didn't want to go, she went straight to her bedroom. Alex made sure that they were going to raise her correctly, only a few threats were made.
We walked back to the Tardis silently. Alex jumped into the jump seat, messing around with her hair as I ran around the console. "Jack?" Jack turned to face Alex, "you still have feelings for Rose, right?"
Jack scratched the back of his neck, "yeah, why?"
"Now's your time to shine. Rose is all upset, be the 'hero' and comfort her." Alex didn't look at Jack, just continued to play with her hair.
"Girls like that? Thought she might want to be alone right now." Jack shrugged and raised his eyebrows at Alex.
"Some girls do." Jack tilted his head at Alex, "Rose does." Jack's eyes widened and took off down the hallway to Rose's room.
I went under the grated floor, pretending to be messing with the Tardis' wires, Jack brought up the war between the wizards and the Cybermen again today. I know Alex has mentioned it before too, but she doesn't talk about it. I've never heard of a war between the two. I was snapped out of my thoughts as Alex stuck her head under the grated floor, letting her hair hang upside down. I laughed a bit, it was always funny when she did that. "I'm going to the library, love."
"Be there soon, honey." Alex kissed my cheek and walked down the hallway. I got out of the floor and sat down in the jump seat, messing around with my rubik's cube. This is the second time that the Cyber war has come up, I didn't even know that the Wizards went to war. I thought Wizards were more peaceful than resorting to war. I wanted to ask Alex about it, but I didn't know if it was an okay thing to do. I hate when anyone brings up the Time War, I wonder if Alex is as sensitive to the topic as well. I don't want to bring it up and upset Alex, but she never seems upset when it's brought up.
I walked down to the library, opening the doors to see Alex sitting on her favorite couch, reading the book about her father. She looked so beautiful just sitting there. Alex was all snuggled up under a blanket, drinking a cup of hot coffee. She looked up at me and smiled, patting the spot next to her. Alex went back to her book as I shuffled over, stealing some of the blanket that was wrapped around Alex. "Lex?" Alex didn't look up from her book, just hummed in response, "can I ask you something?"
Alex looked up at me worriedly and put her book down on the coffee table, "anything."
"I don't want you to get upset, we don't have to talk about it if you don't want to." I paused and Alex nodded for me to continue, "what happened with the Cybermen?" Alex tucked a stray hair behind her ear, "you don't have to tell me, I understand. I hate when people ask about the Time War." I bit my lip, not knowing how Alex was going to respond.
"You don't know of The Wizard Rebellion?" Alex tilted her head at me as I shook my head. "All those Wizard history books and you don't know? How strange." I rolled my eyes, "I mean, it doesn't bother me to talk about it, but I know war is a sensitive subject for you, are you sure you wanna talk about that, Doctor?"
I bit my lip again, "yes." The Wizard Rebellion doesn't ring any bells. Should I know of it?
Alex nodded, "with all those history books, yeah." Just because I have a lot of books doesn't mean I've read every single one of them! "I was still in high school when the Cybermen first invaded. So it was about ten years ago now. We just kinda woke up one day and the Cybermen were everywhere." Alex shrugged, "we're Wizards, we mind our own business and for the most part, we're pretty peaceful people. We don't associate with wars, kinda like how America was in the beginning of World War One, neutral no matter what." Alex nodded again. "The Cybermen were trying to 'upgrade' us because apparently the power and gifts we have, we have no use for. They wanted Wizards to become Cybermen. As you know I didn't live in the Wizard World, so I wasn't there when the war broke out. I just remember children being evacuated and coming through our portal for safety. Which obviously the Cybermen weren't thrilled about. The Cybermen wanted the children more than adult Wizards."
"Why?" I tilted my head at Alex. I knew the Cybermen were pricks, but did they just want the children so the parents would cooperate? Or was there some other intention?
"Well, Wizard children are pretty dangerous, depending on how powerful one is. One temper tantrum could blow up a whole city." Alex shook her head at me, wow. Didn't know that. Note to self, no kids with Alex. "The Cybers wanted that type of power. With a Cyber Wizard child, they could've had the whole universe bowing down to them." Alex tucked her hair behind her ear, "in the beginning, it wasn't really a war. The Cybermen just took over and expected us to just take that this was how things were going to be. It became a war the harder and harder they tried to get to the children. The Cybermen didn't understand why we were fighting back. They were everywhere, on every street, in every home, in every building, they had people's children, of course we were going to fight back."
Alex sighed, "honestly Doctor, we were going to lose the war. The Cybermen got control of The Great Wand, the source for all our powers. They shut it down. Which took away all our powers and left us defenseless. Our soldiers were dropping like fruit fries and there wasn't really a lot left to do. But we weren't giving up. We were going to fight for our right to live, to exist, we weren't letting some fucking tin can rearrange us into something we're not. We weren't going to sit quietly and let the Cybermen take everything from us. We weren't going down without a fight."
Alex wore off, staring at the floor, "you don't have to finish if you don't want too." I put my arm over Alex's shoulder, trying to comfort her.
"No it's alright." Alex turned to me, "as I was saying, we were out of options since the Cybermen shut down The Great Wand. So Crumbs got this idea that since I still had my powers, I could possibly stop the Cybers."
"You would still have your powers if The Great Wand crashed?" I tilted my head at Alex.
"Yes. I am the most powerful Wizard, Doctor." Alex let out a dry laugh. "My powers don't rely on The Great Wand." I knew Alex was powerful. Afterall she had the time vortex living within her. But I never imagined that Alex could actually use her powers if their source was off. That's pretty amazing. "So Crumbs thought that since I was a part of the time vortex, I could possibly go back and shut everything down before any of this happened. And that's what Jack and I did." Alex shrugged, "I remember running through the Wizard World, dodging all the Cybermen that came at me. It was the first time that I was there since the war started. All children that were on Earth were restricted from going home." Alex shook her head, "thank god Jack was there, if he wasn't, I doubt we'd be having the conversation. He helped me get to the power plant without getting upgraded."
Alex shook her head, "it was honestly scary being there. All those bombs being dropping in my face, seeing all those Wizards dying in the streets. It was weird, seeing everything destroyed. My world wasn't full of tall buildings, no huge blimps, it wasn't full of laughter like it always is. It was a lot to see for a fourteen year old. I can't even begin to imagine how scared the children were." Alex bit her lip, "after Jack and I got to the power plant, we went back in time to before the war started. We blew up the Cyber planet so they'd have no way of getting control over us."
Wow. Going back on your own time stream and stopping a war before it starts, I'm speechless. "When Jack and I returned back to the Wizard World, everything was fine. It looked the same as before the war. All the tall buildings, people surrounding the streets, children everywhere laughing, it was all back to normal. Because Jack and I went back in time and changed the past, none of the Wizards remember the war, except for the Wizard Council obviously. So now everyone just learns about it from books and in school. It doesn't surprise me that no one told you. I only thought you would've known from the books." Alex shrugged.
"I thought going back on your own time stream would cause a paradox?" I raised an eyebrow at Alex.
"Not all the time. Just have to know what you're doing and you have to do it properly." Alex shrugged again, leaning her head on my shoulder.
I slipped my hand into hers, "Alex, you don't give yourself enough credit." I mean, it does seem like an easy way out, but Alex and Jack still saved everybody.
Alex let out a laugh as she rolled her eyes at me. "Gotta do whatcha you gotta do." I pulled Alex into a hug, letting her lean on me. I kissed her hair, smelling her sweet vanilla scent. She always smelt so good.
I felt my shirt getting wet and I looked down at Alex, "I'm sorry." I shouldn't have brought up the war. Damn it.
"No Doctor, it's okay. Just thinking about it now, it was probably one of the scariest things I've ever seen. All those dead bodies in the streets, children screaming for their parents, the tanks rolling over living, breathing people." Alex snuggled a bit more into my shoulder.
I pulled away, putting my hand on her cheek, "you know, you're not as tough as you make yourself out to be."
Alex rolled her eyes at me, "that's worse than Mickey Mouse calling me a 'thing'." Alex playfully shoved me.
Alex pouted at me, waiting for me to take back what I said "alright fine, you are tough." She was in certain situations. But not all the time. Alex is a sensitive child once you get passed all the bricks she's put up to keep people out.
"I know I am." Alex flipped her hair like she was the queen of the universe. "I'm gonna go to bed, love. Been a long day." I nodded, standing up and grabbing her hand. I walked with Alex back to her room, wrapping her comforter around her.
"Goodnight, sweetheart." I kissed Alex's forehead as she snuggled into her pillow.
"Night, Doctor." I smiled down at Alex. She really was absolutely beautiful. I walked over to her door, slowly closing it, and headed back to the console.
