Chapter- 39
Kabir's POV
'Here,' she said as she handed me the envelope. 'I have not used the money,' she added further and that irritated me. I was so happy and suddenly my mood became sour. She left after we finished our cake and came back with this envelope to ruin my mood but I couldn't say anything.
I took he envelope and kept it aside. She took the plate and was leaving the room.
'Kavya,' I called her and she turned around and raised her eyebrows. I wanted to spend some more time with her. I didn't wanted her to go.
'Umm... ummm,' I didn't know what to say to make her stay.
'Um... you didn't tell me what you did today,' I asked and she came and sat beside me.
Thank god.
'Oh. I forgot to tell you about it.'
Then she started telling me what she did today and I was just looking at how happy she was.
'When I sat in the park, I remembered Sohum which made me upset for some time but overall it was a good day,' she said and him name on her lips saddened me. Even though I know that I should not be upset as he will always remain a big part of her life but it upsets me.
'I am glad that you enjoyed today.' I forced a smile so that she will not know that I got upset.
'Thank you for everything, Kabir. Even though I am living alone for the past three years, but for the first time I enjoyed by myself and, you know why?' she asked.
'Why?'
'Because I knew you were just a phone call away, Kabir. I know if something happens, I will call you and you will run to me and I was right,' she said and now I had a genuine smile on my face but before I could say something uncle called us for dinner.
'Wait,' I shouted as she was leaving and she turned around and looked at me.
But, I dont know what to say. I dont want to let her go. I want to spend some more time with her as I don't know if I will get the chance to spend time with her when we go back.
'Uhh... do you want to go for a walk after dinner?' I asked.
'Okay. Let's go for a walk.'
'Then I will ask Anand to stay with Raj for some time,' I told her.
'But he will get late for us,' she said and I smiled.
'It's okay. He will not mind,' I said.
'Okay. As you say,' she said with a shrug and left.
After she left, I plucked a petal of the pink rose from the bouquet and kept it in my wallet.
This will always be special to me.

'The weather is nice, right?' she asked as we were walking.
'Yes. It's been so many years that I have come out after dinner.'
'Yes. I have also not gone out after dinner since so many years. I used to go with mom before marriage.
'And after marriage?' I asked.
'After marriage, I never went out for a walk as Sohum used to get tired after a long day of work,' she answered but I didn't know what to say.
We started walking slowly. I looked at her and a smile etched on my lips. She had closed her eyes and was enjoying the wind.
'By the way, when did you last went for walk?' she asked.
'When I came here few years back, I used to go for a walk with princess.'
'Oh.' Her tone seemed upset.
'Are you okay?' I asked as I noticed the sudden change in her mood.
'Yes.' She smiled, but it seemed fake.
'Should we have an ice-cream?' I asked her as I looked at the grocery store.
'Today, I had eaten so many things, I am afraid that I will become fat. My neighbours are already saying that I am not taking care of my body after Sohum left.' she chuckled.
'Are you dieting?' I was surprised.
'No. I am just being a little conscious to what I am eating.'
'You don't have to. You are beautiful the way you are,' I said and her eyes widened.
'I mean... you don't have to change anything about yourself,' I rephrazed my sentence.
'Let's have it,' she said and walked towards the shop.
'Which flavour do you want?' I asked.
'Kesar pista,' she said and I bought a kesar pista and a butter scotch for myself and gave it to her.
'Thank you,' she said and took a bite.
Suddenly, it started to thunder and that day came in front of my mind.
'No, no, it's hurting. Don't beat me.'
'Please. I want to go to my home. Please, I want to go to my mom and dad.
'Don't pull my hair. Please, it's hurting a lot.'
Kavya's POV
Suddenly he started to shiver and ice-cream fell from his hands and he kneeled down.
It started raining and he started screaming 'No.'
I threw the ice-cream and ordered Kabir to look at me but he was continuously screaming 'No.'
I cupped his face in my hand and made him look at me. 'You are fine. Nothing has happened.'
It started raining and he held my wrist tightly and again started screaming 'No... no.'
'Kabir,' I shouted and it seemed that he came out of some trance.
'I want to go home, please. I just want to go home,' he pleaded.
'Yes. We will go home,' I said calmly.
'My mobile... I will ask Anand to bring my car,' he searched for his mobile.
'Shit! I forgot to bring my mobile,' he said and looked at me. 'Give me your mobile,' he barked.
'Kabir, don't shout at me. The shopkeeper is looking at us,' I said and he looked at the shopkeeper.
'Please, be calm,' I added softly.
'You don't understand, Kavya. I want to go home,' he once again shouted and then he got scared as it once again thundered.
I held his hand in mine. 'My battery had gone dead so I also didn't bring my mobile but we will find some solution,' I told him but it felt like he was here, but not here.
'We should not have come out,' he said and as thunder increased, he closed his ear with both of his hands.
'I have seen in the news that rain will not stop today. Let's buy ceralac for Natasha and leave quickly,' a couple were talking with each other while going inside the shop.
'Shit!' he cursed.
'They came on a bike, otherwise we would have asked them to drop us off,' I said.
'I should not have come out. I should not have come out,' he was chanting the same thing repeatedly.
'Kabir,' I touched his shoulder and he angrily jerked my hands away.
'Can you just keep quiet?' he shouted and tears started rolling down my cheeks which I wiped away and controlled my tears as I don't want to cry when his condition is not right.
I looked at my hands that he jerked away.
'I don't even know anybody's mobile number. We are just twenty minutes away from home but yet so far,' he said but I didnt say anything.
We were standing there quietly and at the sound of thunders and rain increasing, I saw his reaction changing. He was looking so helpless and scared. I decided to do something. I went to the shopkeeper.
'Bhaiya, the rain will not stop today. Can you please help us to get a shelter?' I asked.
'It's none of my business,' he said rudely and I didn't argue with him and went back.
'What were you saying to him?' Kabir asked but I didnt say anything.
'Listen,' the shopkeeper called and we turned around.
'I have a room in the back of my shop, which I use to sleep in the afternoon. There's a bed and a washroom there. You can stay there,' he said.
'There is a but, right?' Kabir asked.
'Yes. What can you give me in return?' he asked.
'Anything,' I said quickly and kabir held my arms tightly.
'Are you crazy? Do you even know what you are saying?'
'You will go crazy if you stand here,' I whispered. 'If we get a room, atleast we will be away from rain and thunder,' I added.
'My wallet is in the jeans which I wore in the morning. I only had hundred rupees in this pant. I realized it while buying ice-cream,' he whispered.
'Do you want to stay the night here?' he asked impatiently.
'What do you need?' I asked and he was staring at me.
'I will cut off your eyes if you look at her,' Kabir shouted and he started laughing.
'I don't want your wife, sir,' he said and was still laughing.
As he said wife, we both looked at each other.
'Do you want the room?' he was getting impatient.
'I guess that you want money. I have not bought my wallet. I will give you money later,' Kabir said, and this time he reduced the tone of his voice.
'I don't trust rich people,' he said.
'You can take my phone number,' Kabir negotiated.
'What do you want?' I asked and looked at him staring at me. After few minutes, I realized he was not staring at me but at my mangalsutra.
'You want my mangalsutra?' I asked.
'Yes. Your husband seems rich. He will give you hundreds of mangalsutra,' he said looking at Kabir.
'Do you know how much it costs? Why do you need so much money for a day?' Kabir shouted.
'Be quiet,' I whispered to him.
'This is not a matter of one night. If you are so desparate for my room, you will give it to me. I can see desperation in madam's eyes and I am just using it in my favour,' he said.
The sound of thunder increased and rain increased. Kabir looked at it and closed his ears tightly.
I looked at the mangalsutra and remembered the day Sohum tied me this. I don't even have the engagement ring.
I looked at it and then I looked at Kabir watching the rain.
'Take these.' I hurriedely removed the mangalsutra and gave it to the shopkeeper.
'Kavya, what have you done?' Kabir asked, almost shouted.
'Here are the keys of the room and the shop. Shut down the shutter of the shop before sleeping and tommorrow, I will come and take the keys from you,' he said, wore his raincoat and left the place.
Kabir was just staring at me. I shut down the shutter and locked it from inside. Thankfully, we could not hear the sound anymore after we closed the shop.
Kabir was just staring at me.
'Let's go in the room,' I said, unlocked the room, went inside, switched on the light and fan, closed the window and sat on the bed.
'I know how precious it was for you. That was the mangalsutra which Sohum tied during your marriage,' he said as he sat beside me but I didnt say anything.
I was already angry at him for shouting at me and jerking my hand away. I know he was in different zone but that doen't mean he will do that when I was just trying to help him. On top of that, I was upset that, for the first time, since my marriage, I had removed my mangalsutra.
'Kavya?' he called me and I looked at him and got more angry.
God! With him, I came to know my angry side. I was never angry like this on Sohum. I dont even remember we even fought. We were like best friends.
'Kavya?' he called again and that irritated me. He is talking so casually with me as if he didn't hurt me few minutes back but a part of me is glad that he has calmed down as now we are not able to listen to the pouring of rain.
'Kavya? Where are you lost? You are upset because of the mangalsutra, right? I know how much it means to you and I am sorry that because of me you have to give it to him.'
God! He doesn't even know that he has done something wrong. Maybe, in his eyes, I am worth that only.
The thought of my mangalsutra gone had made me sad, but surprisingly, it has not occupied my mind the way what he did to me occupied my mind and that surprised me.
I should be upset about the last piece of Sohum gone rather than getting angry for what Kabir had done but it's the opposite.
'Kavya? Why are you not saying anything?' he shouted.
'Do you ever yell at your princess when she is trying to calm you down and jerk her hands from your shoulder when she is just trying to help you or you do those things only with me as in your eyes I am worthy of your this behaviour only? I asked and after few seconds his expression changed as realisation dawned upon him.
