Chapter 1: Rise and Shine Greenie

2 ½ Years Ago:

Y/N's POV:

"Hey there, greenie, calm down. I'm not gonna hurt you, alright?" the boy spoke in a hushed tone, trying not to startle me. I stared up at the mysterious figure. His gorgeous, sun-kissed hair stuck to his forehead, his stunning, coffee brown eyes and callous, large hands. "My name's Newt, do you remember yours?" he asked, carefully grabbing my petite hand, rubbing calming circles on my knuckles as he helped me to my feet. I stood there in shock, shaking my head.

"W-Why can't I remember anything?" I whimpered, my lower lip jutting out in fear. "Hey, it's ok. It happens to everyone who comes up the box. Your name will come back eventually. It's the one thing they let us keep; you just have to be patient." he smiled, bringing me over to the cage doors.

"Hey! Winston, lower the rope!" he shouted to the boys above us, reaching his hand out the grab the piece of harsh material. Newt turned to me, smiling as he placed his hand in mine. "Now I'm going to have to ask you to hold onto me as they hoist us up, ok? After we get up there, I'll help explain what's going on. Do you trust me?" he asked, holding onto my hand tightly. I was hesitant but nodded. His arm wrapped around my petite waist, holding me tightly against his body as we were lifted out of the small metal box.

As soon as we made our way onto solid ground, I was bombarded by a herd of boys. "Wow, she's stunning" "Do you think they her to us for a reason?" "I hope we get more girls like her; she's hot", and millions of other vulgar words were spat at me, causing me to grimace and turn red with rage.

"All of you shut it! I am a human, for christ sake, not some sort of toy that you all get to take turns playing with! So stop talking about me like some kind of object and keep your dirty thoughts to yourself," I heaved, my yes blazing with uncontrollable anger as all the boys stood there in shock and shame. Newt smiled proudly, yelling at the boys to get back to work before making his way over to me. "Quite the show you put on back there", he smirked amusedly, causing a bright pink hue to rest on my fluffy cheeks.

"Sorry about that, but it just made me so uncomfortable that they were just talking about me like that. I didn't mean to cause a scene," I mumbled embarrassedly, my gaze falling to the grass. "No need to apologise, love; I understand that they were out of line. Besides, it was pretty cool how you were able even to make Gally crap his pants," he chuckled, a smile forming on my lips as I giggled as well.

"Newt! There you are, good. Oh, there you are greenie, looks like you've already met Newt. He's one of our best Runners. Anyways, you'll learn all about that tomorrow. Right now, you need to have the grand tour. Newt, do you mind? Nick told me to ask you," Alby spoke, smiling at the two of us. Newt nodded, flashing his cute smile at Alby before directing at me. "Let's go, love", he smirked, bowing dramatically before grabbing my hand and leading me around their home.

"Over there's the Homestead; that's where everyone sleeps. The Keepers, people who are in charge of each job, and the other Runners get their own rooms on the top floor; the rest of us sleep in hammocks or even on the floor." Newt said, pointing over to a huge wooden building that stood in the middle of the field.

"Over there is the blood-house, that's where the slicers, the ones who kill the animals for meat and other resources, cut up the animals before handing the meat over to our cook, Frypan, who's currently yelling at Gavin" He laughed, pointing over to a dark-skinned boy who was indeed scolding a brunette boy. I smiled, giggling along with him as we continued our way through the place, greeting everyone who passed by.

"And that's the last of it. Anything else you wanna know about greenie?" Newt asked as he led me back to the place where we started the journey. I looked over Newt's shoulder, my eyes meeting the large cement walls that surrounded the area. "What are those?" I asked, pointing towards them.

Newt spun around, meeting the object I was pointing to. I could tell he didn't feel comfortable telling me about it. "Sorry, I shouldn't have asked; you don't have to" "No, it's alright. You deserve to know, love. It's just... those are the walls that lead to the maze. Now I can't explain what the maze is, but all I can say is that no matter what, never set foot in there. Okay?" he spoke sternly, his eyebrows furrowing with concern. I nodded, not willing to argue over the order.

Across from us, I could see a tall, Asian boy making his way over to us. He was panting, most likely from running. "There you are! Hey, shuck face, you didn't finish mapping your part of the maze!" he laughed, shoving Newt with his shoulder as Newt huffed, a cue pout sitting on his soft, baby-like lips.

"Hey! I got distracted, okay?" he whined, playfully punching the boy bak. "Oooh~ was this lovely lady the cause of your distraction?" he asked smugly, smirking in my direction. I blushed, averting my gaze to the ground. "No need to be shy princess, the name's Minho, but you can call me the man of your dreams~" he flirted, placing a kiss on my petite hand. I giggled at his horrible attempt to flirt, rolling my eyes before speaking.

"Well, I would tell you my name, the only problem is, I can't remember it. However, do not call me princess. You sound like a perv," I spoke blankly, smirking when all the colour drained from his face. "Damn, she's feisty; I kinda dig it", he mumbled, chuckling when I rolled my eyes once more.

"Anyways, Daniel and Nick both said you need to map your run before you can go waltzing around with little miss Sunshine over here. I can take her to Alby; no need to worry your little head about it," Minho teased, holding my hand in his as he dragged me away from a whining Newt. I giggled, waving at him as we made our way to who I assumed was Alby.

"Alby, I got the Greenie for you", Minho smiled, shoving me towards the dark-skinned boy. "Hey there, Greenie, the names Alby. I'm the second in command around here. Over there is Nick, but he's currently talking to the Builders about a problem with one f the shacks. Anyways, I needed to show you where you'll be sleeping since you know... you're a girl," he grimaced, smiling sheepishly at his horrible attempt to explain the situation. Thankfully, I understood the gist of it. I nodded, smiling kindly as he led me to the Homestead.

"This is where everyone else sleeps, but due to the current circumstances, the Builders are working on building you your very own room up here with the keeps and leaders." I nodded, my eyes widening at the problem. "You said currently? does that mean I don't have a place to sleep tonight?" I asked, slightly nervous at the thought of sleeping amongst the other hormonal teenage boys. Alby shook his head, causing a sigh of relief to escape my soft lips.

"Don't worry; we wouldn't let you sleep here amongst the other boys. However, you will have to share a room with one of the Keepers since there isn't enough space for them. I'm sorry, but that's the best we could do unless you wanna sleep in the Deadlands," he joked, pointing to the dark, scary woods. I shook my head, shuddering at the thought of spending a night there.

"It's alright. If it's okay with him, I would like to bunk with Newt. No offence to the rest of you, but so far, he's the only one I really trust." I spoke honestly, smiling shyly at the thought of the British boy. Alby nodded, telling me it was indeed alright and then proceeded to show me to his room. "Newt will be back soon; I'll tell him about this, and then when he comes back, you can sort out sleeping arrangements. Then you both can come down for the bonfire!" he cheered, smiling brightly at me.

"Bonfire?" I asked, tilting my head to the side out of confusion. He laughed, shaking his head with amusement. "Basically, every month when a new GreenBean shows up, we have a bonfire night where everyone gets to relax and celebrate their arrival. It's a lot of fun! Tonight, we're celebrating you!" I smiled, happy that I was already being welcomed into their tightly-knit family. "Thank you, that's such a lovely thing to do", I beamed, happy at this discovery.

Alby told me that he had some other work he needed to finish off and if I needed anything to come and find him. I nodded, thanking him for his hospitality before making my way into Newts room. It was very cosy: a hammock hanging by the door, a small but sturdy bed placed by the make-shift window. A set of drapes (most likely made from cloth) hanging over the window.

The sheets were soft but clearly worn out. Three was a small, wooden desk and a set of drawers by the wall. On the desk was a notebook and pencil, made from wood. He had a candle and a couple of wooden carvings around his room. His clothes were folded neatly and placed on his small chair.

To the left was a door that led to a small bathroom. Within the bathroom was a tiny toilet, a shower with only one setting and a chair to put your things on. Luckily he had hygienical products such as shampoo, soap and toothpaste. He had a makeshift toothbrush on the side of the sink, which was right next to the shower. Just as I was about to wash my face, a knock at the door broke the silence.

I walked over to the wooden door, opening it to see a tall, blonde boy standing on the other side of it. "Hey, I'm Gally. I found this is the box you came up in. It had a note on it that said to give it to 'the girl', who I'm guessing, is you? So here you go," he said quickly, shoving the box into my chest. I shook my head, grasping everything he had just said. "Th-Thank you, really. It was nice of you to bring this to me, Gally" I smiled warmly, blushing lightly at his handsome face.

He smiled lightly, rubbing the back of his neck before speaking. "Yeah- it was um... no problem. If you ever you know- need anything, I'm right next door. Just knock on my door and um... ya," he spoke bashfully. I giggled, placing my small hand on his right bicep. "Thank you, Gally", I smiled, closing the door as I brought the products into the room. "At least he didn't flirt with me", I laughed, sitting down on the floor as I looked through the box.

Inside of it was clothes, hygienical products (toothpaste, soap, shampoo, hairbrush, deodorant etc.), some hair ties, pieces of cloth that I could use as a towel, and of course... period products. "I almost forgot I had one of those", I mumbled to myself, placing the bag back into the box. I sighed, putting the box down next to the dresser as I looked through all the clothes I had been provided with. It wasn't much; about 4-5 outfits and 2 sets of undergarments. The only pairs of shoes I had were the ones that I was wearing.

I sighed, folding the clothes and putting them back into the box before falling onto the small, makeshift bed. Just as my head hit the blanket, the door opened to reveal a panting Newt. "Newt? Are you okay?" I asked, concern and confusion lacing my soft features. Newt held up his hand, signalling that he needed a minute to collect himself before replying. "Sorry, love. I came as soon as I finished mapping. I heard you chose me to be bunkmate. I must say, I'm flattered you chose me, love," he smirked, causing me to roll my eyes at his silly behaviour.

"I'll have you know I only chose you because your the only one who didn't flirt me with, and I trust you the most out of everyone else," I stated matter of factly, chuckling at the small playful pout that formed on his lips. "So, do you mind me bunking with you until I have room to sleep in?" I asked, a sheepish smile plastered on my face.

"Of course. If you want, I could even sleep downstairs with the others if that makes you-" "No, really! I feel bad enough as it is that you have to share a room with me, I would feel even worse if you would have to sleep downstairs whilst I was in your room." Newt smiled warmly at me, taking a seat next to me on the bed. "So, what do you think so far?" he asked, smiling softly at me.

My smile dipped, a soft sigh escaping my chapped lips."I-I'm honestly overwhelmed. I mean- one minute I was in a box without any memory of who I was, and now I'm in a field that is filled with nothing but guys who I don't know." I sighed, grabbing my head in my hands. "Hey. I know it can be overwhelming at first, but it gets easier over time. Ya, sometimes you'll have those bad days, hell, so do I. But that's what we're here for, to help each other. If you ever need to talk, I'm here" he smiled, grabbing my hand in his softly.

I smiled gratefully, sighing as I decided to use the bathroom. "Do you mind if I use your bathroom, I kinda stink", I joked, causing him to laugh as he nodded, smiling at me as he made his way to the door. "You can come and find me once you're done if you want", he blushed, smiling at me as he walked out the door, leaving me to my own devices. After Newt left, I grabbed the box from the dresser, looking through it, trying to find the products I needed.

I quickly grabbed some clothes and made my way to the bathroom, getting into the shower and trying my best to wash away all the gunk and dirt that had gathered on my body. "God, I can't remember the last time I took a shower and- well, I can't remember a lot of things" I chuckled dryly, wiping myself off as I brushed my hair and teeth, getting ready to go and see the rest of the Glade.

I quickly got myself dressed, tying my hair up into a messy bun and making my way to the Glade. I walked through the greenery that was the Glade, admiring all of the things that surrounded the area. "Hey! Greenie! You alright?" a soft voice called out, shaking me from my thoughts.

Outfit:

I smiled nodding as I walked over to the person who had called me. "Hey, the name's Frypan. You excited for the bonfire?" he asked, smiling softly at me. Something about Frypan made me feel relaxed, he just gave off a good vibe.  I nodded, chatting alongside him as we walked over to the other boys who were currently setting up the giant bonfire in the middle of the green field.

"Woah... this is all for me?" I asked in a state of shock, admiring as they stacked the wood sky high. Newt chuckled, walking over to me and Frypan. "Yup, we're celebrating you Greenbean, enjoy it" he smiled, looking down at me. I looked at him, a soft smile gracing my lips. Every time I looked into his stunning Brown eyes, I felt as though we were the only two in the world; it made my heart flutter.

Soon, all the boys gathered around, torches in their hands. "Ready boys, now!" Nick called out, causing all the boys to throw their lit torches into the stack of wood, watching as the ember flames rose and consumed the entire tower. I smiled, laughing as they all chanted and sang, dancing and having fun. This felt like a home; even if it didn't look that way. I looked around, spotting Newt sitting by a trunk, his head rested against it as he stared up at the dark sky.

"Newt!" I called out, walking over to him. He beamed at me, patting the seat next to him as we sat by the fire, smiling at the boys as they all celebrated like there was no tomorrow. Newt looked over to me, a fond look in his eyes. "How's it going, love?" he asked, the nicknames causing a red hue to rest on my cheeks.

I giggled shyly before responding. "Well, considering all that's happened today, not bad" I joked, watching as his face broke into a grin. "Don't worry, you'll get used to it; plus, you'll have me through the entire process," he whispered in my ear, intertwining our hands together. I smiled, leaning my head against his shoulder, watching and smiling as everyone around me had fun.

Soon it was time for us to turn in for the night. I wished everyone a good night; smiling as they wished the same. as I walked up to the room I was now sharing with Newt, I bumped into what felt like a brick wall. I looked up to see Gally once again.

"Hey Greenie, sorry I was just... well, I just wanted to tell you that tomorrow you'll be trying out different jobs to see which one fits you the best. You'll be helping me with the Builders, got it?" he asked, his tone soft but stern. I nodded, smiling up at him. "Okay, Gally. See you then, good night," I called out softly, walking to the room, completely oblivious to the blush on his neck and ears.

Once I stepped into the room, I noticed the hammock had been pulled to be next to the bed. I looked over to see Newt brushing his teeth in the bathroom. Once he was done, he walked over to me, a slight grin on his face.

"I brought the hammock closer to you just n case you need anything. You can take the bed; I don't take no for an answer," he smirked, making me huff in annoyance. I quickly grabbed a pair of pants, slipping into the small bathroom to take off my shorts. Once changed, I hopped into the bed, turning onto my side to face Newt. I looked at his face, studying every detail possible.

"Goodnight, love" he whispered, closing his eyes. I sighed, wishing him the same as I turned onto my back, staring up at the wooden thatched ceiling. As I tossed and turned, I kept thinking about the events of today. I sighed, snuggling further into the thin sheets as I tried to block out the constant thoughts running through my head. Suddenly, it hit me like a ton of bricks. "Y/N, my name is Y/N" I whispered, a smile on my lips as I finally closed my eyes, letting the darkness consume me.
