Keith blushed. "I was angry, and he is like a really good person...to yell at?!?"

Shiro glowered at him. "How did he react?"

Keith didn't meet their eyes. "He cried..."

"And what did you do then?"

"I...I left." 

Adam laughed. "Well, that's over."

Shiro shook his head. "No it's not. Keith you need to apologize to him."

"He won't accept it, I really messed up. He cared for me and taught me all this crap about the surface and I treated him like dirt."

"That's true." Shiro said. "But that makes it even more important for you to say you're sorry! Show him you truly care."

Keith groaned. "Fineeee. But he'll just become more upset when I tell him I'm staying down here."

Adam raised an eyebrow, "What makes you think you're doing that?" Shiro looked at Keith expectantly.

"Come on guys, I can't leave." Keith said. It'd hurt too much

"And you think you can just leave that boy behind? Stop lying to yourself." Adam said, his eyes shaded in grief.

"I-"

"Keith. We know just as well as you do. You can't live without him, you have to stay." Shiro said.

Keith frowned. "Maybe I can go see him a little here and there, but-"

"Just stop. Stop fighting it Keith." Adam smiled tiredly. "It'll be okay. We will be okay."

The tears were back now. It seemed Keith had been crying more in these last few days than he had in his entire lifetime.

"It's okay Keith." Shiro and Adam pulled him  a hug, and he lay limp in their arms, crying.

"Can- can I see you guys sometimes?" Keith sniffled. "On a certain day..or time you guys meet me somewhere or-"

Shiro nodded. "We'll figure something out. This isn't good bye."

"Sometimes sacrifices are nessacary Keith. Your journey down here is over, it's time for you to continue on the surface." Adam said.

Keith nodded. "I love you guys."

They smiled sadly. "We love you more."

The next morning the three of them woke early to head for Atlantis. The Council was already waiting for them, having expected them to arrive. 

Keith was given human clothes and a water tight bag to take up to the surface. 

"When you are out of the water, you will change to a human, even without human touch. And.. You won't be able to change back." Alfor said, his hands on Keith's shaking shoulders.

"This is a huge opportunity, we are glad you took it." Trigel said.

"Thank you." Keith said quietly.

Alfor smiled. "No, thank you. Without your help we wouldn't have guessed Lotor and Haggar could be planning anything, or that they could be accepted back into our society. "

"So thank you." He bowed low, Trigel and Gyrgan doing the same.

Blaytz glared at them before smiling at Keith and slowly bowing.

Keith blinked not knowing how to take such praise.

"You're welcome." He said.

He was hugged by many of the citizens, sirens from all over the city that were glad Lotor and Haggar were given a second chance.

Lotor and Haggar themselves were there. And they didn't come to thank him or hug him, but the emotion was there. Lotor nodded, a faint smile on his lips. Keith nodded back.

Finally, Keith was to swim to the surface. He took one more sad glance at the city, his parents, and the Council, the world he'd known his entire life, before surging upward, putting it behind him.

The first break of the cool water made Keith gasp, the sun glaring at him. He glanced around for a shadowy area by the rocks at the edge of the docks before swimming to them.

When he changed, it wasn't painful. It was a relief, but at the same a painful loss in his heart. He felt as if a part of him was gone now.

But another part of him was waiting.

Keith slid on the clothes and stood, his hair wet from the water, his face wet from his tears. He started for the gate.

He remembered the first night he left this gate, Lance carrying him to the 'Uber', his new legs feeling like goopy jelly. He looked up, the rain clouds thick in the early morning fog.

Keith had barely made it to the road when it began to pour.

He walked the length of the road, few cars going that way, until he made it to the neighborhood. He felt grateful for the walks with Hunk, and he could remember the exact way to the house.

When he made it to the front door, he was completely drenched. He knocked.

No one answered.

He knocked again.

No one answered.

Keith sighed and felt his legs give out, as he sat down on the doorstep, his heart heavy. He felt the tears start up again and he grimaced.

Suddenly the door opened, slowly.

Keith looked up to see Lance.

He looked...horrific really. His eyes were puffy and red, and his hair wild. He stared down at Keith, his blue eyes dim. "Keith," his breath hitched. "What are you doing here?"

"I came to apologize." Keith was up quickly. "I understand if you won't accept it but I decided to turn human permanently so I can try to show you..." Keith looked up at him.

"Try to show you I care."

Lances face was expressionless, but Keith caught the slight glimmer in his eye.

Lance smiled. "I missed you." He said and pulled Keith into a hug.

Keith melted into his arms, the rain running down his back, his arms around Lances waist.

"Missed you too."

Hunk immediately barreled into them, joining in on the hug. "I missed you too Keith!" He said grinning.
