~Stupid Cupid - Chapter 8

When I woke again, it was eight in the morning and time for breakfast. I lugged myself from my bunk and walked to the pavilion. I sat down at the Poseidon table and rest my head. I had a splitting headache.

“Oh, the headache after discovering your powers. Always a joy.” I lift my head and glare at Jason who just laughed.

“I liked you better when you didn’t exist.” I muttered only causing him to laugh harder.

“Jason! Leave her alone. Besides, you’re just trying to get over the fact that she’s more powerful than you.” Piper says and sticks her tongue out at him as she sits to the right of me.

“Thanks, Pipes. I thought you liked me.” Jason fakes a pout and sits down across from Piper.

"Oh, boo-hoo.” Leo says and throws a sausage link at Jason who catches it in his mouth.

“Thanks for the sausage, Leo.”

“Whatever.” Leo says and sits next to me. I lay my head down on his shoulder and close my eyes once more.

“Remember to keep it PG, Sky.” Percy says and I open my eyes to glare at him as he sits down across from me.

“You’re annoying.” I say and lift my head up only to have it fall back onto Leo.

"You okay?” Leo asks but I can hear the laughter.

“Your shoulder is comfy.” I reply.

“How can his shoulder be comfy? He’s skin and bone.” Jason asks and I shrug.

“Where am I going to put the Hermes cabin?” Annabeth asks herself as she sits down next to Percy.

“Huh?” I ask.

“She’s planning for Capture the Flag.” Everyone replies at once and I decide not to ask any further questions.

“Okay.” I say and grab a plate from a wood nymph.

“Annabeth, can you stop planning long enough to eat?” Percy asks but is ignored as Annabeth pulls out a miniature map of the woods.

“I’m guess she won’t be talking much.” I say and everyone nods.

“Annabeth, put half of the Hermes cabin on offence and the other half on defence.” I say as I take a bite of my pancakes. Annabeth looks up and then at the map and back at me.

"That could work.” She goes back to looking at the map and then puts it away.

"Done?” Percy asks.

“Thanks to Sky, I am.” She leans into Percy and begins to eat.

After a while of talking there’s a loud rumble. Everyone looks up confused except Percy. Weird.

“Barrier action?” Piper asks but Annabeth shakes her head.

"Couldn’t be.”

“Don’t worry. It’s just Mrs. O’Leary.” Percy replies and everyone calms down.

“Who’s Mrs. O’Leary?” I ask.

“She’s-” Percy’s interrupted by me gasping probably looking terrified. Running towards us was a giant dog like the one I saw back at school.

“Coming this way.” Annabeth replies but I’m standing in pure fear as the giant thing comes closer.

“Sky, calm down.” Leo says and tries to calm me down but I can’t take my eyes off the thing.

“What’s wrong?” Leo asks.

"It’s a hellhound! How can it even get in here?.” I ask and hide behind him forgetting that I have a sword and bow and arrow.

"Mrs. O’Leary is a good hellhound. Percy’s pet actually. I thought dogs are your favorite animal?” Leo asks.

“Not when they’re bigger than my house!” I look at him like he’s crazy.

“Come on.” Leo says and he takes me to Bunker Nine.

“I guess I’m meeting Mrs. O’Leary another time?” I ask and lean against the wall.

“Sure.” Leo replies and opens the door.

I walk in behind him and look around. It amazes me. Leo pulls out two chairs and we sit down.

"So, I took you here because I have a surprise for you.” Leo smiles evilly and I back up.

“I’m not going to end up with an extra arm, right?”

“No.” Leo gives me a blank expression and walks away. When he returns he has a medium sized box in his hands.

"What’s that?”

“For you.” Leo hands me the box and I open in carefully. Inside was a small, bronze puppy.

"Awe! You didn’t have to.”

"Yeah, but I wanted to.”

“What’s it’s name?”

"You can choose. It’s a girl by the way.”

“Aqua.”

“Cool. Oh, and check this out.” He touches the nose of the small dog and it’s eyes open revealing glowing aquamarine eyes. It barks happily and jumps from the box to my lap.

"It’s alive?”

"This isn’t a Frankenstein movie and yes, she’s ‘alive’ as you say. She’s technically on not alive.”

"If Aqua can run, jump, bark, or anything else, she’s alive in my opinion. So, too bad.”

"Alright, alright. Don’t hurt me.”

“Hm.” I cross my arms and smirked in triumph. I try to hold the pose but we break into uncontrollable laughter in unison.

“Why are we laughing?” Leo asks between laughs.

"I don’t know!” I reply giggling.

“We need mental help.” Leo states when he calmed down.

"What are we going to tell the therapist? ‘Hi, I’m a child of one of the Greek gods and can’t figure out why I can’t stop laughing. It’s been getting in the way of quests, training, and killing monster. What so ever should I do?’ I think not.”

“Well, I’m sure one of the Apollo kids can help us.”

"Help with what? We’ve stopped laughing.” I point out and realization crosses his face.

"By the gods, you’re right. Hazza! Rejoice for we have been cured!” Leo shouts and runs in circles throwing nuts and bolts in the air causing me to laugh.

"Okay, calm down before you throw a nail into your own eye.” Leo stops mid leap and throw to look at me.

"You’re probably right.” He kicks the small pieces of metal to the side and sits down. We sit in silence for fifteen minutes.

"This is some seriously awkward silence.” Leo says and I look at him.

“My cousin once told me that it isn’t an awkward silence until someone says it is. Up until that moment, it’s peaceful.”

"What did you say?”

“I told him that he was crazier than a coo-coo clock and that his sentence was the most idiotic thing he’s ever said.”

"Nice.” We fall into another silence.

“What time is it?”

"No clue.”

“What, you don’t have a clock in this place?”

"My dragon, Festus ate it.”

"I’m sorry, what?”

"My dragon, Festus-”

“I heard what you said. It was rhetorical.”

“Right.”

"Ugh! I think I have a watch.” I look at my arm and then my pockets where I find my ipod.

“Is that an ipod?”

“Yeah! I’ve been looking everywhere for this! Let me see if it still works.” I turn it on and the screen lights up. Yes! When it’s completely on, I look at the time.

“Holy Hera! It’s six thirty! Dinner’s starting soon.” We look at each other for a minute before we both bolt to the door and out the woods.

Once Leo and I got out of the woods, we parted ways to get ready considering we smelled like grease. Aqua followed behind me which I was glad for since I would never remember her. I’m horrible at remembering things. I once forgot my backpack at school. I went into my cabin and grabbed a change of clothes and then took a shower. When I finished, I headed to the pavilion to eat.

On my way there, my feet carried me to the Hades table instead of the Poseidon table. I got there before Nico which I was glad for because now I could leave without looking like a freak. Sadly, instead of turning and walking to my friends, I sat down. Does my body have a mind of it’s own or something? Before I could get up, Nico appeared literally out of the shadows. Creepy.

“What are you doing?” He asked and looked me up and down almost as though he was looking for my soul. Good luck finding it, a part of me that I wished I could get rid of said.

“I honestly don’t know.” I answered truthfully.

“You have to know. People don’t just go places and not know why. Even if you don’t know consciously you know subconsciously and everyone can tap into their subconscious therefore, what. Are. You. Doing?”

“I thought I ditched science already. And I’m sorry, but my subconscious hates me and doesn’t want to tell me why it brought me here, so, you’re out of luck and so am I.” I crossed my arms and he scowled at me.

"Then why don’t you leave?”

“Why don’t I stay?”

"Why are you so stubborn?”

“Why are you? I can literally do this all day. It’s better if you just sit down and talk to me. Saves us both a lot of time and breath.” But you’re just a waste of time and air. I hate that part of me.

"What?” Nico snapped at me and I hadn’t realized I’d been glaring at the space next to him.

“Nothing.” I said and he rolled his eyes muttering something that sounded like, ‘Sure, I believe that.’

We sat in silence for awhile but it wasn’t awkward like with Leo, it was peaceful like what my cousin said. Maybe I was wrong back then. Or maybe it’s just because I’m with Nico. I sat there, enjoying the silence until I heard whispering. My eyes snapped open and I looked to the Aphrodite table. They were pointing at Nico and I whispering. I caught a few things like, ‘so dating’ and ‘What does she see in him?’ and ‘Please. He could do so much better.’ See, even an outcast can do better than you. Evil me said. Shut up. They’re all just jealous and didn’t see anything in him until he was ‘taken’. Classic girl drama. I hope that shut me up. Wow, that was weird.

"Ignore them. The only nice ones are Piper, the younger ones, and some of her brothers.” Nico says when he sees what I’m looking at. I nod at him and return to my food.

“I’d call it more fifth since that was the last grade I was in at a real school. It depends on the cabin and person.” Nico replies and eats a grape which is as much as I’ve seen him eat all week.

“And I thought I left that last year.” I saw what seemed to be a ghost of a smile dance on Nico’s face before he composed himself.

“You’ll never leave that stuff behind. Everyone’s immature in their own way.”

"How are you immature?” Dinner ended and Nico left without another word.
