Interactive Fanfic [IRL FORTUNA]
You clear out your mind as soon as you stop.
"Are we in the open?" Hermes asks, he shakes his head.
"So, we travelled pretty far, and to be honest I don't have a good sense of direction here." He looks around but anything seems to be familiar.
"I don't recognize this, or any of the streets you went by." You mutter as you see that you're in a completely new part if town. You decide to eat something before you get going, and get Clayton too.
"Thank Neo! It was getting suffocating in there." You just hand Clayton a yogurt cup and start eating your own. "Oh, thanks."
"No problem, do you have any idea where we are?" You ask, they shake their head.
"Nah, not a single clue." They devour their yogurt, making sure not to waste any. "So, we should think of something. We can't always have Hermes as our scapegoat, he's going to run out of power."
"He needs power! I forgot, do you have anything for that?" You ask, you didn't want a God to suddenly unexpectedly shut down at the worst time. They grew on you, a lot.
You thought into it more. You had only reply met the Gods yesterday since you never really played Fortuna. Clayton was your friend, yes, but you never actually spoke with them. To you they used to be that irritating guy that you would occasionally have fun with. Now you risked everything to keep them and the Gods.
This was crazy.
"They are solar powered." Clayton's words snap you back and you flinch instinctively. "But on a cloudy day we can connect them to cars, like when your car shuts down and you need someone to help spark it."
"Oh. That makes sense. Well, we need to get some more supplies, like camping supplies." You say, specifying.
"Do you know how expensive those are? We'll use up the money instantly, and we still need that." They groan and sigh. "We need to get put of this country and we need that money for tickets also."
"Yard sales." You say. "Yard sales cut down the price by a whole ton, use a few quarters to clean it for good measure and we're good to go."
"Yeah, problem is that we're never going to get far without being noticed." Clayton complains. "Everyone has heard of us for sure already."
"Well, wear one of my hoodies and shorts, they mainly tell what we're wearing. If we change that will help cover us at least a little." You smirk and change your sweater to a hoodie, you guess that your pants are fine, but you change your shoes just in case.
Clayton just gets an oversized hoodie, sweatpants, and shorts that you almost mistook for a skirt. You laugh and Clayton looks at you weirdly before putting the hoodie on. You look at Hermes and it hits you that he should be in your inventory by now. But first you check for his power.
"Hey Hermes, do you have your battery level back up?" You ask. He nods an you put him back into your inventory.
"Let's look for a yard sale then." Clayton tells you. You and Clayton stroll down the street and see some college students selling dome things. Just your luck.
"Aw, hello!" A girl chirps, they mistook Clayton for being way younger than they actually are.
"Hey." You cut in before Clayton explodes. "What are you selling?"
"Oh, nothing much. Some old things from old hobbies and old... friends." She frowns and hesitates before saying friends.
"Okay, so do you happen to have any camping supplies? We're planning to do that for spring break." You make up, for some reason your mood improves. The girl makes a strange face at camping.
"Just take them. Take them and go." She says and she shoves you a bag, you check inside and it's everything. Two sleeping bags, tents, survival books and such.
"Thank-" you're cut off when a guy starts running up.
"Kathy! You're not selling my stuff!" He exclaims, the girl decks him in the face.
"I stick to my word, you cheater! If anything you own is in my dorm if you cheat on me - and you did, with Jessica! - then I have a right to sell it!" Some other girls and guys come in and start cheering, you pick up Clayton and bolt.
You didn't like drama.
You were running while dragging Clayton, but you weren't looking where you were going in your panic. You crash into a woman and fall over, almost crushing Clayton. You get up and promptly apologize. You almost leave until she stops you, and you notice her kid and husband.
The same trio who bought your phone.
You try to play it off and not try to make yourself familiar to them. The woman instantly recognizes you though.
"You're the person that sold us your phone, right?" She asks, you hide your cringe and nod.
"Well, as a thank you for making our child happy, I'd like to give you my phone. I already cleared the data and I have too much money, so take it." She says, you make a weird expression and take it.
"Thank you?" You open it up, it's the latest version and seems a little more advanced then it should be.
"They can't track you with it." She winked before turning and leaving. You just blink and she, with her husband and child, are gone.
"Well that was... fortunate." You look at the phone carefully, inspecting it. "I guess that we're lucky to bump into them again."
"They were on the other side of town half an hour ago! Or further!" Clayton panics. "That is witchcraft or something in the works!"
"Or they have a car." You reply. You put the phone into your inventory and keep going. Clayton follows, tired. You don't want to think much about the couple, the mom have you the creeps.
"Do we have a way to get more money? We can't buy tickets to anywhere without enough, and it's likely that we have to leave America." They sigh. "I miss Canada, I knew I shouldn't have moved when I found out America didn't have free healthcare. A big red flag right there."
"Well, where exactly are we going? We need to move to a county that hates America, but has fairly the same amount for personal freedom." You point out.
"Germany or Chile, if we really can't afford it or we have no absolute way, Canada." They suggest.
"Do you know anybody?" You ask, you were sure that Clayton had at least a few connections.
"Aside from someone I used to tweet with who lives in Russia, no." They say, you silently curse to yourself.
"Any relatives? I have none who would take me in." You sigh, your family would turn you in a heartbeat.
"Nope, all dead or forgot that I even existed." Clayton answers. You sigh again at the blunt you both hit.
"At first, let's focus on surviving and evading police. If we really become desperate, we rob a bank." Clayton burst into laughter at what you had just said.
"Okay, that's a good one!" They get out.
"I'm serious. I really am. Hermes is fast and can go unnoticed, Athena has a solid ten in agility, and I'm good at tactics." You gravely say.
"Eli, no way. You can-"
"I said if we become really desperate. Really desperate. I mean begging for money and only coming back with pennies every week and we have no way to get food." You warn. "Not if we're being selfish."
"Oh, thank you. I was having a heart attack there." They sigh and hug you again. You can tell that it's sincere. You hug them back and carry them, they don't argue. You see the sun slowly setting and realize that you're shockingly close to a freeway.
You see a truck pull over and a wheel get replaced. You overhear the chatter and pick up a few sentences.
"We're going to South Carolina baby!" A young man exclaims. "After we fix this."
"Camping and no technology for us, the way mother nature intended." A boy smiles, you quickly glance over and see that the trunk of the truck has a fair amount of supplies in the back.
You run over and wait until the car starts that you get into the back. You lay down and use your own supply bag to help yourself blend in. Luckily you're not noticed whatsoever, but you keep down just in case. You stay awake a majority of the time, and eat a packet of jerky to hold you over. After a while you finally sit up and look around.
It was dusk, but you could still read the sign as you passed by.
[I]"You are now leaving Florida."
