Untitled Part 10

"Maybe we should stop for the night?"

Blaze stopped by a nearby tree, leaning on it and panting lightly. They hadn't talked much throughout the walk through the woodland. By this time, the sun was setting and the wood was painted in an elegant orangish pink.

"If you would like to." Carmen said plainly, settling herself at the tree base, calming. Blaze sidled down to sit next to her, gazing out over the wonderful colors the world had been bathed in from the setting sun.

Blaze coughed uncomfortably. "So... Are we going to start a fire or something? Maybe a shelter?"

"Well, I'm sure you have the fire covered, fire girl!" Carmen laughed, and Blaze blushed a bit at the nickname.

"Please don't call me that."

"What, fire girl?" Carmen giggled. "Unless you can prove me wrong, I'm going to guess you have MAGICAL FIRE POWERS! So the name fire girl totally fits."

Blaze growled under her breath, but didn't argue.

"Come onnn! Why is this secret you have so... secret? I have powers too, and I'm not afraid to tell anyone. I'm your best friend, Blaze! Best friends tell each other their secrets!"

"It's NOT-" Blaze stopped herself, becoming nervous.

"...Secret?" Carmen finished for her, a small grin forming on her face.

Blaze gulped. "N-no..."

"What is it, then?"

"I-I just..." Blaze sighed, finally giving in. "Okay... Look, I have this thing call an 'animus power'. Not really too sure how I got it, and I definitely don't want to go over how I found out about it."

"Why nottt? Oh, it sounds so interesting... Has to do with killing someone?"

"Stop!" Blaze snapped, gripping her head.

"Andddddddd there. Just fire now."

"You should probably not give me hints that you're reading my mind if you would like to continue doing so," Blaze hissed lowly, frowning.

"Ennh. I like messing with you." Carmen winked, elbowing Blaze in the ribs gently.

"Sure." Blaze grumbled, settling herself down to the forest floor and curling up.

There was a long silence between the two, but Carmen didn't seem finished yet.

"So, what was it about your animus powers?"

"It allows me to enchant things. Like, I could enchant that stick over there to come and start poking you until you shut up." Blaze smiled a bit.

"There's your sense of humor," Carmen grinned, seemingly unoffended. "So why don't you use them more often?"

"Every spell I cast takes a bit of my soul away." Blaze hiccuped, sighing. "When I don't have any soul left, I become..." She frowned. "A person like you."

"Are you saying I have no soul?"

"I'm just using you as an example."

"Ah, okay." Carmen grinned widely. "So, you mean, starting killing people?"

"Exactly."

"That must be why you're so afraid of death," Carmen chuckled. "Or murders, because you don't want to end up like one."

"Pretty much." Blaze heaved another sigh, rolling back to face Carmen.

"How much soul do you have left?" Carmen asked, sounding honestly curious.

"Dunno." Blaze shrugged. "Don't really have a soul checking thing or whatever."

"How much do you feel like you have?"

"I feel like my soul's still there..." Blaze shrugged again, leaning her head onto into the palm of her hand.

"Okay. How many spells have you casted, do you think?"

"A lot, actually."

"Well... I'm sure you'd be okay for a many few more."

"Yeah..." Blaze shrugged. "Maybe. I don't want to take my chances, though."

"Why not? You've got a lot of power; why not use it? You know you'll be fine."

"But-" Blaze started to fret. "I-I used to use my power carelessly, because I never knew what it was like to go insane, but..." She sighed. "W-when I arrived to the asylum, it scared me so much..."

"Blaze-" Carmen started, but Blaze kept going on.

"I-I didn't ever want to use my powers! Never! I didn't want to end up like them..."

"..."

Carmen frowned.

"Like me?"
