Chapter 3
*two days later...*
Kanan's P.O.V
"Again," I said frustrated when Ezra wasn't moving as quickly. Our lightsabers collided with sparks flying off each time.
"Faster," I ordered but he only went slower.
I sighed. We weren't getting anywhere at this rate and everything Sabine told me was stuck in my head.
How could this happen?
"K-Kanan, can we take a break?" My padawan asked, resting hands on his knees. I nodded and he walked into the Ghost yet something lingered in the Force as he left. Failure. That was my first guess and would be my last. Ezra felt like he was failing me. I sighed then followed the kid to the common room where he sat on the couch barely keeping his eyes open.
"Ezra, what's going on with you lately?" I asked as calm as possible.
"Nothing," he spat resting his head in the palm of his hand.
"I think the circles around your eyes have a different story to tell," I retorted.
"It's nothing, leave me alone," Ezra snapped getting up and started to head out but I stopped him.
"You know that you can tell me anything, right?" I questioned. Ezra nodded unsure then began his walk out of the common room. I let him go seeing how getting an answer was irrelevant. I sat on the couch and sighed while resting my head in the palm of my hand.
"Kanan?" I looked up to see a worried Hera walk through the other door, cradling a sleeping Skyler.
"What happened?" She asked.
I took in a shaky, deep breath before saying, "I don't know. He won't tell me what's wrong."
Hera was silent for a moment.
"Well," she began, "Just give him sometime. Sooner or later, he's going to have to say something."
"He wasn't the only one keeping something," I muttered looking up at a confused pilot.
"She told me," I said and it didn't take a second for Hera to realize what I meant.
"Look, Kanan-" Hera started before I raised a hand to silence her. I stood up and walked over until standing in front of her. Our eyes met and we had a mini stare down.
"Why won't you tell him?" I asked.
Hera was taken back by this. "Like you said to Ezra, some things can't be said at the moment. Especially, in his fragile state," she answered. I told her about our conversation when everyone was asleep yesterday.
My face softened and I pulled her into a hug, minding the child in her arms. "That's why you are a good person," I whispered and rubbed her back. Hera's tense muscles lessened as she relaxed in my arms and laid her head against my chest.
"Thanks love," she said, quietly.
"Anytime," I replied, breaking the hug.
"Now, go talk to him," she ordered and I laughed a bit while leaving. I knew not to disobey an order when it came from the twi'lek herself. My feet stopped once I was standing in front of my padawan's room. My fist knocked on the door and a 'come in' was heard from the other side.
I opened the door to see Ezra sitting up and rubbing his eyes. He looked over at me then immediately looked down.
"Y-yes?" He asked shyly, messing with his blanket. I felt my expression soften at the sight of my broken student.
"Come down, here," I said and the two of us sat on Zeb's bed.
Ezra kept playing with his fingers and almost seemed nervous.
"What's going on?" I asked him, "Are you having trouble sleeping?"
The boy looked up at me and shook his head no. I raised an eyebrow then asked, "There has to be something wrong? You don't look to good." I knew he was lying but didn't say anything about it.
The rings under his eyes were dark and he seemed more dazed than I've ever seen him.
"No, there isn't anything wrong. I'm fine," he reassured, faking a grin.
"Ezra, you're not fooling anyone," I said almost annoyed. He flinched and I did my best to calm down.
"Please, tell me," I begged. Yes, I Kanan Jarrus, Jedi knight, leader of the Ghost crew, is begging to get some sort of knowing on what's happening to my padawan.
"I told you, there's nothing wrong. Can you go already?" he snapped then glared draggers at me.
"Fine," I huffed then stood up and walked towards the door, "You obviously think you can do everything on your own. Then I'll let you figure things out by yourself if that's really what you want." I finally left the room leaving Ezra in his guilt and sorrow.
Once the door closed behind me, my anger subsided into regret.
'What did I just do? Now he probably thinks that I don't need him,' I thought. I pinched the bridge of my nose and went to mediate to clear my head.
Hera's P.O.V
After Kanan left, I looked down at my baby worried. I'm not sure what was happening and this secret wasn't only digging a hole for Sabine but also for everyone else. It was for Ezra's own sake at the moment and hopefully he gets that.
I sat on the couch and laid back trying to get Sky to sleep. She has been cranky since we rescued Ezra. Maybe that's what's bothering her, she wants Ezra, misses him. I stood up and walked over to the door until immediately stopping when a voice came from the other side.
"You obviously think you can do everything on your own. Then I'll let you figure things out by yourself if that's really what you want."
My mind tried to tap in on what in the galaxy was going on but nothing fit. Soon I walked into the hall to see it empty then over to Ezra's room. My hand formed a fist and was about to knock on the door before stopping in mid air.
Someone was sniffing softly on the other side of the door which worried me more. "Ezra," I spoke gently, "Can I come in?"
It took a couple minutes but I patiently waited until the door slid open. My foot stepped in the dark room then my eyes saw the teen sitting on Zeb's bed looking at the ground. I could hear a bit of sniffling while sitting next to the teen. I used my free arm to rest a hand on his shoulder.
Ezra scotched closer to me and laid his head on my shoulder, seeking comfort. I started rubbing circles on his back and stayed silent seeing as he probably doesn't want to talk.
After a while, Sky was pouting again and stretched her small arms to Ezra. It was like she could sense his sadness. I could imagine a small grimace on Ezra's lips. He stretched an arm over and let Sky hold his big hand in her small ones. I smiled at the sight of the two bonding even in a time like this.
"You're such a cutie," I heard Ezra rasp and Sky laughed with the biggest smile I've ever seen for a while.
"Man, I wish I could have your magical touch," I joked, "She rarely does this around me."
"I guess, I'm her favorite," he mocked and I rolled my eyes.
"Well, she isn't the only cutie," I said, just to embarrass the teen.
"I wouldn't call Zeb cute. That would be an insult and offensive to all known cuteness in the galaxy," he said and I snorted.
How he makes these comebacks is a mystery to me.
"Are you hungry?" I asked Ezra.
"I am thirsty," he spoke thoughtfully.
"Come on, I need to go and feed Sky anyway," I said standing up. Ezra stood up and eagerly asking, "Can I feed her? Can I? Can I?"
"Sure," I told him with a smile. I still had to get some things done around the ship. Also put my baby down for a nap after I fed her. Yet, Ezra can do it which would help me to get things done faster.
So while I made her formula, Ezra got himself a drink. When both things were done, I gave Ezra, Sky and her bottle.
"I'll be back in a little bit. Comm me if you need anything," I said and he agreed to do so. I left the common room and soon had everything finished an hour later. My trek back wasn't long and found the two fast asleep on the couch. I smiled and grabbed the bottle then walked off to let them sleep. They both needed it.
