MY PHONE FOUND THE PERFECT SECOND TO RING

Since it was technically not a working day for me, I decided to dress casually. I put on some white jeans, baby pink crop top and a white light jacket. My face was scrubbed free of makeup with just some lip gloss and my hair in a high ponytail. With my flats and my sunglasses, I was all ready to go.

I parked my black BMW in the parking lot of the venue.

"Being as punctual as you are, I expected better from you Mia." Trevor said as soon as I entered the ball room.

"Hello to you too sunshine. Its just half past eleven," I said, sweetly smiling at him and commenting about his yellow button down.

"Now come on, we have work to do." And with that, we started working.

Checking guest list, seating arrangements, being updated with the bakery and caterers and managing so many staff all by ourselves was too much to do.

Adam, our event manager, was jumping and hopping all around the place handing out instructions. He had this endless reserve of energy and was constantly drawing from it. He was the most enthusiastic person I have ever met.

"Oh god, I'm so exhausted and hungry. I need carbs right now." I slumped on a chair beside Trevor.

"Me too. So I ordered pizza for everyone. We all can have lunch break and start again by three." Trevor said.

"Oh, thank you so much. You are the best. I was just going to ask you to do it." I said and Trevor smiled at me.

"Oh and one more thing. Can I leave by five maybe. Mom and dad are coming today. I would like to spend some time with them. And oh, I also have to go dress shopping." I asked him.

"Sure you can go. I think we will be finished by then anyway." He said.

"Okay. And by the way, who is Nora? Your girlfriend?" I asked him with my brows raised and a grin on my face.

"Now, where did you come across that name?" He asked me, faking shock.

"I asked first."

"Okay. She is my cousin from Los Angeles not my girlfriend. After my sister, she is second most closest to me." He answered with a smile.

"Oh, okay. And I saw her name on the guest list and she was right beside you in the seating arrangement. So, I was just curious." I said, obviously embarrassed.

"Oh, no need to explain." He said as soon as the delivery guy arrived.

After having our pizza and much needed rest, we were back to work. By around half past four, almost everything was done.

"Finally done." I let out a big dramatic sigh.

"Yup. Everything's done. Adam will be here tomorrow early to receive cake and the caterers, before guests arrive." Trevor told me.

"Good. I can finally go shopping." I was smiling like a little girl.

"Yes you can. Now lets get out of here. I just need to have a word with the manager of the place." He said and disappeared inside a door.

I took that time to go to the bathroom to freshen up. By the time I was out, Trevor was waiting for me at the gate.

"Shall we?" I asked.

"After you." He smiled. Always a gentleman.

We walked together towards our respective cars in silence.

"So, uh... I'll see you tomorrow then." He said. Was that nervousness I heard in his voice.

"Yeah, see you then. Bye." I replied turning to go to my car.

I opened the door and got inside. Just then my phone began to ring. Blaine was calling. Uh-oh, I forgot to take a rain check on our weekend plans. Now I have to face her wrath. And man she gets ugly when she is angry.

"Um hey." I replied hesitantly picking up the phone.

"Hey, you busy right now? I know your office hours are not yet over." She asked.

"No, I'm not busy. Tell me what it is.?"

"I just wanted to remind you about our weekend plans. You remember right?" She asked,a bit too excitedly.

"No. Actually I wanted to take a rain check on our plans this weekend."

"Why? Is that hotshot boss of yours making you work extra hours on weekend?" She asked. I knew she was joking.

"No, actually not exactly. Actually its Trevor's dad's birthday tomorrow. And I had to help him plan the whole thing. Infact today, we took a day off the office to put together everything for the party. And my parents are also in town for the party." I started explaining everything.

"Woah Woah. Slow down Mia. It's okay. We can make plans for the next weekend." She told me. I let out a breath I didn't even knew I was holding.

"But seriously Blaine, I'm really sorry. But I promise I will make it up to you." I told her.

"Okay then. We'll talk later. My boss is calling for me. Bye"

"Bye." And there. She was not furious at me.

Suddenly there was a knock on the window beside me. I saw Trevor standing with his hands inside the pockets. With plain yellow button down and dark jeans, he actually looked younger than he was.

"Hey, dont you have to go home?" I asked him teasing.

"Actually I might need you to drop me home." I was confused.

"And why am I supposed to do that?" I asked raising an eyebrow.

"Stop asking questions Mia. Open the door. I'll explain everything on the way." I quickly unlocked the passenger door letting him in.

"Uh... thanks. Actually my car is very low on gas. If I take my car home, I will be stranded somewhere in the middle." He explained.

"Okay okay. So lets take you home." I exclaimed driving away.

The whole way to his home, he kept telling me stories about Jason. They were together in Columbia University. Trevor was a year senior to Jason. But they knew each other well then.

"I still can't believe how Jason can land a beautiful and smart girl like Maureen. I've met her once." Trevor exclaimed and I was laughing.

"But they seem to be in love so much. I can't wait for him to propose her. I just want to see them happy you know." I said smiling wide.

"Don't you want that kind of happiness for yourself?" He asked me, suddenly sounding serious.

"Come on. Everyone wants that happiness for themselves. Even me. But I think I'm not wired for that sort of relationship right now." I replied, my mood changing suddenly.

We were right in front of the building whose penthouse was Jason's humble abode.

"Everyone is wired for that sort of relationship Mia. We just have to open up ourselves for the risks and bumps." He said, his voice low now.

He was slowly leaning towards me, and me in a trance like state was stuck in the seat. His face was mere inches away from me now. His breath hot on my lips.

If I would have moved an inch forward, our lips would have meet. My breathing was almost laboured now. A thousand butterflies were waltzing around in my stomach. Trevor was about to kiss me, but my phone found the perfect second to ring.

At that first sound of my ringtone, Trevor jumped back as if he was burned. His face was red with embarrassment. I could only imagine how my face looked right now.

It was my mom calling.

"Hey mom." I picked up the call.

"Hey honey. Its half past five, where are you. Me and your dad are at your apartment right now." She asked.

"Uh, I'm on my way mom. I'll be home in around fifteen minutes. See you then." I replied.

"Okay. Bye." And the phone was disconnected.

"Okay so, I'll see you tomorrow then. At the party." Trevor was back to normal.

"Uh, yeah. See you tomorrow. Bye." I said, and he got out of the car.

I just sat there for a few moments collecting my self. Trevor almost kissed me today. If that damned phone had rung just a few minutes later, Trevor would have kissed me. My face felt hot and flustered.

After a couple of minutes, I drove off with a ridiculous smile plastered on my face. I always thought it was ridiculous to have a crush on my boss, even though he treated me as his friend. But never would I have imagined of a scenario, where maybe he would reciprocate my feelings.

It was exactly 5.48 when I opened the door to my apartment. As soon as I was inside, I was engulfed in a huge bear hug.

"Elsa, atleast let her set her purse down before hogging her." My dad laughed from where he was sitting on the couch.

"Oh shut up Elijah. My daughter knows I missed her." My mom released me, directing me towards the couch.

I hugged my dad too, and sat down beside him.

"I heard she was in New York last weekend. One week is no long a time to miss her. I know I won't." Jase said coming out of the kitchen.

I quickly jumped up laughing, engulfing him in a hug. He picked me up and spun around. Jase was the one I missed the most since I didn't get to meet him much.

"Haha. Hey kid." He said affectionately rubbing my back.

"But I thought you didn't miss me." I replied, swatting him on the arm.

"I said one week is not a long time. But five months is long enough for me to miss my little sister." He said smiling.

"Awwwww, I wish I had such sweet and caring family." It was then I realized Liv was sitting on the love seat.

"Your dad loves you Liv and you know that." I said jumping on the love seat beside her.

"Hey Jase, I didn't knew you were coming too. Dad didn't mention anything on the phone yesterday." I asked him genuinely surprised.

"Actually me and Maureen wanted to surprise you. But she got an emergency patient today. So I had to come without her." He explained.

Maureen was a neuro-surgeon in the most renowned hospital of Toronto.

"Hey, anybody wants coffee? I'm going to get some for me." I asked going towards my room.

"No honey. Olive was kind enough to tend to our needs when we arrived. She is always such a darling." My mom replied.

My mom adored her. I glanced one last time towards Liv before going into my room to freshen up. I shed my jacket and washed my face before going back to the kitchen. I prepared a cup of coffee for me.

As soon as I was in my living room, I could see my mom and Liv were in middle of a conversation as were my dad and Jase.

"So dad, what are your plans for the weekend?" I asked him.

"Me and your brother have dinner arrangements with one of our associates here in Seattle. Your mother can stay with you until then. I can pick her up on my way back to hotel." My dad said.

"Oh come on dad. You could have taken this weekend off." I said pouting.

"Well we have our weekend off. But today is technically not a weekend." My brother interrupted in between.

"Okay fine. But no more business meals until Sunday. Deal?" I said childishly.

When it comes to my family, I become a child considering I'm the youngest in our family.

"Actually honey. We have our flight back Sunday afternoon." This time my mom said.

"Okay. I get it. But atleast we can have a brunch together tomorrow." I suggested.

"I would like nothing more." My mom said.

"Yeah. We can do that." Jase agreed too.

"Oh, and mom. We have to go dress shopping today. You can accompany me and Liv. We can leave around 7.30 as dad and Jase would be leaving around the same time." I explained.

"Yeah we can have fun, go on a shopping spree and have dinner out." Liv was slowly getting back in her element.

"Yeah yeah. Go have fun while me and dad are stuck in a boring business dinner." Jase said making a face.

"Haha, I never said this was gonna be fun kiddo." Dad said laughing.

"Yeah, whatever." Jase mumbled.

And the evening was spent chatting, laughing and teasing. Mom found her perfect audience in Liv who was enjoying my mother's company very much.

Liv lost her mother at 14. Not to death but to divorce. Since then, she has been living with her dad, and only having her dad to support her. He loved her too much and it can be seen in his eyes. But every now and then, Liv could feel the emptiness left behind by her mother.
