DEATHS ARE ALWAYS HARD.

Trevor's POV

Turning in my sleep was difficult, all because of the beautiful body draped over me. I turned my head to gaze at her, while she slept peacefully. Her face, with those beautiful hazel eyes and arched eyebrows and perfect full lips, was a piece of art. Her long chestnut brown hair, was spilled all over her cream pillowcase. Her beauty took my breath away.

Mia was sleeping soundly, all cuddled upto me. Her face was pressed in between my upper arm and torso. Her hand was splayed over my chest and her legs were tangled up with my own. As I said, she was completely draped over me and I was loving it, because she was mine. Mine. To keep and cherish and love. Forever.

''It's creepy.'' She mumbled in her sleep.

''What is babe?'' I ran my fingers through her hair. It was like running my hand in silk.

''You. Staring. At me. It's creepy.''

This time, she got up, her eyes still half closed and kissed the corner of my mouth.

''You're so fucking perfect.''

I cupped her face and kissed her tenderly.

------------------------

''So, my mum wants us over for dinner tonight.''
I said.

''Yeah. That's great. I was thinking about calling her anyway. How is she holding up now?'' She flipped the egg perfectly.

''She's doing fine now. I mean I know it's gonna take a while for everything to go back to normal.''

She switched off the stove and came towards me, looping her arms behind my neck. She placed a kiss on the center of my chest.

''It's just difficult for me to see my mother so sad and broken. She doesn't show it when she's among people, but I know her. I mean, I can never imagine, how much losing your mother could hurt. I just don't know how to help her.''

''All you can do is just be there for her. Healing is a long process, and it will come from within her when she's ready.'' She said, placing her head on my chest.

I placed a kiss on her head. Her sweet smell grounded me, releasing the tension from my body.

''Okay. So, how about I pick you up at 6:30? Good with you?''

''Yeah. That'll work. We can grab a bottle of wine on the way. I am expecting you know what they like.'' She tried to lighten the situation.

Going back to the stove, she placed a plate with eggs, sausage and toast in front of me. The food smelled delicious. After a couple of minutes, she joined me with her own plate.

''Mum and dad, both, like completely different wines. What are you gonna do then?'' I teased her.

''Simple solution. We'll just get what your mother likes. Because women have the best taste.''

----------------------------

It's been more than a week since I've been back and the time spent with Mia had been heaven. But since I'm back, I've been noticing slight changes in her. It's not like her feelings towards me have changed, but something changed in her. Sometimes, when she's sitting idle, she just goes into some other zone. Like she gets completely cut off from the world.

Or, sometimes I see this deep sadness in her eyes. There are no tears or anything, but just this soul-deep sadness. And the worst part is, I don't know what's wrong with her. She tries to act normal with me, all fun and jokes and that adorable laugh of hers. I just wanna know what's wrong with her.

Whenever I try asking her what's wrong, she just smiles at me and denies it, completely changing the topic. I honestly don't want to push her, but I just want to help her. I cannot do that unless she let's me in.

Right now I was sitting in her living room, waiting for her to come out of her room. Tired of waiting and stewing in my own thoughts, I got up and started walking towards her room. When I was a couple of feet away from her door, it opened and there she was standing in front of me.

There she was, my angel, in a gorgeous blush pink dress, her hair in loose curls framing her face. She looked ravishing. I walked towards her and took her face in my hands, kissing her nude coloured lips.

''You look beautiful baby.''

''Thank you. You don't look so bad yourself.'' There was a twinkle in her eyes, the sadness was nowhere to be seen.

''I think we should leave. We don't wanna keep your parents waiting.''

''Whatever you say.''

Taking her hand in mine, we left her apartment.

We picked a bottle of Sancerre on our way to my parent's place.

My parent's abode, the house that I grew up in, was a big house with a circular driveway. I've always loved this house because it had a rustic and homely vibe to it. However, my mother liked to get some or the other part of it re-decorated from time to time.

As soon as a servant let us in, my mother was already walking towards us. I handed over the bottle to the servant and opened my arms to greet her but she bypassed me completely and went straight towards my girlfriend, pulling her into a hug. I couldn't help but pout at my mother. I think she was more happy to see Mia than she was to see me.

''It's good that you already like my girlfriend, but you could have atleast acknowledged me mother.'' I walked over to my mother and placed a kiss on her cheek.

''Oh sweetheart, you know how much I love you.'' She kissed me and pulled me into a hug too. ''But it's Mia that I really wanted to meet today.''

My mother looked lovely in a mint green silk blouse and white pants, pearls glinting at her throat and ears. But as she was leading Mia down the hallway and into the living room, I could see that she had lost weight in the past two weeks. But I knew she was getting better slowly. My father kept me updated about her well-being.

The living room was huge, everything in tones of olive green, grey and white. My mother had it re-decorated last year. The only things that remained the same was the fireplace, and the multiple photos on the wall. My father was sitting on the grey chaise, a glass with amber liquid in his hand.

As soon as he saw us, he placed his glass on the white table in front of him and walked towards us. He had a warm smile on his face.

''Hey, son.'' He hugged me with a slap on my back.

My dad is a completely different person at home than he is in the office. There, he is a strong and assertive man, with zero tolerance of bullshit and is compassionate about his work. At home, he is equally compassionate, but about his family. He is warm and caring and always has this welcoming smile on his face. As a kid, I had always been more close to my dad than to my mom. He taught to how to ride my bike, drive my car. He used to attend all my football games, inspite of being busy sometimes. He was my idol. If I could ever be half as good a dad to my kids, as he was to me and my sister, I would consider myself successful.

Pleasantries were exchanged between my father and Mia. Soon, Alias, our butler, announced that the dinner was served. The conversation and laughter shifted from the living room to the dining table.

''I still remember, when Trevor was three years old, he and Nessie, both loved to chase butterflies around the garden. You could never tell, who was most excited to see those winged little creatures. Our little boy or our dog.''

My mom was in a much better mood than she had been the past two weeks. A little more herself.

''Oh, I still remember Nessie. I loved that dog.''

''I didn't know you had a dog.'' Mia said, taking a bite of her steak.

''Yeah. She died of old-age when I was in middle school.''

''He cried all night. We just couldn't do anything to console him. He refused to even eat. I even offered to get him a new dog, but he just couldn't stop crying.'' Dad had a twinge of sadness in his voice.

''Deaths are always hard. No matter how much you prepare yourself for it, it comes to greet you out of nowhere.''

My mother's eyes were glassy with unshed tears. Death was a tough subject for her right now, I never should have brought it up. Before I could get up to console her, Mia took my mother's hand from across the table and squeezed it.

''When I was a kid, my grandpa died of Alzheimer's. One of our older maids, who took care of me, told me something that I still remember. She said that death was not the greatest loss. The people who die have just moved on to a better place, where there is no pain or suffering. So, instead of remembering them with grief in our hearts, we should remember them with a smile on our face to honour their memory.''

Mia was an angel. The way she consoled my mother, it warmed my heart. I saw my father smile at me from his place.

Rest of the dinner went by smoothly. We were now back in the living room, this time with post-dinner drinks in our hands. My dad and Mia were in a conversation when my mother touched my elbow, and asked me to follow her to my dad's home office.

''You know I've always liked Mia, but now I love her. She is the perfect girl for you, sweetheart.''

''I know, Mom. And I love her too. She is too compassionate to half-ass anything. She invests her whole heart in whatever she does.''

''I just cannot wait for you guys to get married.'' She had a glint in her eyes.

''Mom, it's too soon. We are barely two months into our relationship.''

And, I was happy my mother was slowly getting back to her usual self. Even if it meant, she was excited for our wedding so early on in our relationship.

''So, you guys would be attending the charity gala next week, right?'' My father asked, taking a sip of his whiskey.

We were now back in the living room.

''Actually, we haven't talked about it yet. We didn't get the time. I'll give you an answer by Monday.''

''What charity gala?'' Mia looked at me.

''I got an invite to the charity gala, hosted by a foundation that funds multiple hospitals that treat children with cystic fibrosis and the also the research wings. I meant to tell you about it, but it must have slipped my mind.''

''Many influential industrialists attend these charity galas every year. It's a great place to expand your contacts. I want you two to attend the gala this year, as me and your mother and not going to attend it this year.''

''As I said dad, we haven't had the chance to talk about it yet. I'll give you a definite answer by Monday.''

''Okay then.''

''Anyways, I think it's getting late. We should be leaving now.''

I got up and extended a hand towards Mia. She placed her hand in mine with a smile.

''I enjoyed the dinner very much. It was lovely seeing you guys.'' Mia air kissed my mother on her cheek.

I hugged mom tight, and placed a kiss on her cheek. Doing the same with my dad, we left the living room, escorted by my parent's butler.

We were in the car and on our way home when Mia turned towards me.

''I liked your mother a lot. She is such a pure soul.''

''She liked you too. She even said that you were perfect for me.''

''So, tell me more about this gala thing your father was talking about.''

I was just telling her about the foundation that holds this charity gala, when her phone chimed with an incoming message.

''Just a second.''

She looked at the screen, and suddenly her expression went blank. She quickly stuffed her phone back in her purse.

''Is everything alright?''

''Yeah. Everything's fine. It was just Liv, wanting to chat.'' She plastered a smile on her face.

It looked a little forced. She was acting weird all of a sudden. I knew something was wrong, but I just wanted to give her some time to sort whatever it was bothering her, by herself.

And if she ever needs my help, I am always there for her.
