"Smile at a stranger. See what happens." - Patti LuPone
(PS...QUOTES AND PICTURES DO NOT BELONG TO ME, BUT TO THEIR ORIGINAL OWNER."
Bong finished up cleaning the dishes when she got a call. She wiped her hands on her dress and swiped right to answer the phone.
"Hello."
"Hello. Is this Mrs.An?" A gruff sound came from the other side.
She scrunched her face with confusion. "Yes, that's me. May I know who this is?"
The person was silent for a second before they spoke up. "Mrs. An. This is the Police Station. We have your daughter with us and would like you to come to the station."
Her eyes widened upon hearing that. Her daughter was in the station? For what and what happened? She immediately hung up and grabbed her keys. She yelled for Minhyuk and he came rushing down.
"What happened?!" He had a bat in his hand and batted it as he looked around.
She rolled her eyes and grabbed her bag from the couch. "Our daughter is at the station and I am going to pick her up. And no, I don't know what happened."
Minhyuk stared wide gaped at her. "The hell! Is she okay?"
"I don't know, but I hope so."
"Let me grab my jacket and I will go with y-"
"Nope, you are not." She cut him off. "Someone has to watch the house and our other child."
He ruffled his hair and nodded in agreement. "You are right. Well then, be safe okay?"
She nodded and kissed him on his cheek before she left.
The drive to the station didn't take her long. She got out of the car as soon as she parked and slammed the door. She made her way up and slammed her way in.
The officers that were sitting at the desk jumped at the sudden noise. They looked up to see a woman whose expression was dulled up. She frantically looked around before her eyes landed on them. She stormed her way into the front desk and slammed her hands on the table.
"I got a call. Where is my daughter?" Her eyes darted between the two officers. The lady officer turned to look at her co-worker before she got up out of her chair.
"Are you Mrs.An?" The officer took out a file and opened it.
"Yes, that's I."
She nodded her head before she glanced at her co-worker and gestured something to him. He got up and got inside the door behind the desk.
"The detective is inside the office with your daughter. He is going to fetch them."
"Ah, thank you." Bong-soon gave her a strained smile. Her anxiety was rising by the second. She couldn't help but overthink. Did something happen to her daughter? What if she faced some kind of danger?
Then come out a tall man with an olive complexion. His hair was short but curly. He looked to be around his 30s. His eyes were vague and he had a poker expression on. Behind him was another officer. Compared to him, she had a warm smile on her face. Her long blond hair was extremely shiny. It was as if she was in a hair commercial. And when she stood next to him, their height difference was extremely noticeable.
Then finally came out her daughter. Bong-Soon jumped out of her chair and lunged her daughter into a hug. Her heart has finally relaxed as soon as it saw that she was okay. Well, at least physically.
"I am okay, Umma." Yu-Jin patted her back. Bong took a step back as she checked her daughter's body for any injuries and saw her left hand bandaged.
"No, you are not fine. Look at your hand! What the hell happened?"
Yu-Jin just chuckled lightly. "It is a light injury that's all." Bong stared at her before she lightly smacked her at the back of the head.
"Light injury, my ass. Yah! Don't forget about the mental injury. Only God knows what trauma you suffered."
As the two started going back on forth, the two officers were left speechless. The duo forgot that there were in a public place and argued as if this was their home.
"Ahem"
A coughing sound disrupted them, making Bong-Soon let go of her daughter's arm and turn towards the detective who was busy scowling at them. She let out an awkward smile and bowed.
"Sorry. For a moment, I forgot other people other than my daughter existed."
This made Yu-Jin start letting out a loud laugh and a small chuckle from the female detective while the male detective's scowl grew even more.
"Now that I have your attention, I will get to the point. My name is Do-Jun and this is my partner, Jui-Hae. We are the officers in this case. Your daughter came in contact with a serial killer that we have been looking for."
Bong-Soon's eyes widened. A serial killer?! She turned towards her daughter who was busy looking everywhere but her mom.
"Don't worry, Mrs.An. She is safe...for now."
This fucker. Why did he say she was safe if she wasn't going to be. She mentally rolled her eyes at him.
"What do you mean by "for now"? Are they not yet caught?"
"Unfortunately, no." This time, the female spoke. "They were able to escape before we could reach there."
"Not yet caught?" Bong-Soon was not having it. Whoever that almost killed her daughter was still out there and now, there was a possible chance that her daughter might get attacked again.
"Do you realize what this means? How do you expect me to sleep knowing that someone out there is out to get my daughter?" Her eyes darted between the two expecting an answer to her question.
Jui-Hae's brows knitted as her smile faded. "Mrs.An, I know that this is a difficult time for you, but trust us when we say that we are doing everything we can to catch them. Thanks to your daughter, the case was able to progress."
"Progress as in?"
"We now know that they are not working alone. Whoever they are, they have an accomplice with them." Do-Jun spoke in a hoarse whisper.
Worry lines framed her mouth and tugged at her eyes. This news wasn't making her feel better. It made her feel even worse. It was as if her gut was trying to warn her about something.
Do-Jun seemed to get a sense of Bong-Soon's anxious state. His fixed expression fell off for a second and a sympathy frown took over to which Jui-Hae noticed before it disappeared again and returned to his normal expression.
"Trying to understand the mind of one serial killer can be difficult, but with two, we can create profiles to figure out what type of serial killer they are."
"One is a sub and another is a dom." This time, it was Yu-Jin who spoke up. Her response earned a small smile from the male and a shocked one from the female.
"Exactly. What made you think that?" His eyes bored into her.
"The fact that the second was willing to risk their lives for the first one. Not only that, they awaited affirmation from the first attacker before trying to attack me."
His mouth curved into a smile. He was pleased with the response.
"Wah! Mrs.An, you have a very smart daughter!" Jui-Hae spoke with enthusiasm.
This made Bong-Soon smile. "Indeed, she is very smart." She gave a small pat on the back of her daughter.
"Maybe she would like to join the law field o-"
"No!" Yu-Jin cut her off as she shook her head aggressively. "No offense, but as much it is fun to solve crimes, this isn't what I want to do with my life."
Do-Jun raised his brow and folded his arms. "Why, is there something wrong with it?"
Yu-Jin chuckled nervously as she avoided his stern eyes. For some reason, they reminded her of her grandmother's eyes.
"Ah, no. I just don't like seeing blood."
"Bullshit."
Jui-hae gasped loudly upon hearing Do-Jun curse and Bong-Soon's eyes widened.
"Hey! You know it is rude to curse." She lightly slapped his arm as she bowed to Bong and Yu-jin. "I am so sorry on his behalf. He tends to forget his manners from time to time. We will do better next time."
Bong-Soon gave a small chuckle as she shook her arm. "No, you don't have to worry about it. It is not your fault some people were not born with manners."
Do-jun's unfolded his arms as he scrunched up his face. "What did you say?!"
"You heard what I said."
"Take it back, young lady."
She rolled her eyes. "For your information, I am older than you. So respect me, asshole."
He ran his hand through his hair and scoffed. "Please, you expect me to respect you when you don't. It is earned."
"Well, clearly you haven't earned one. No wonder you have a face like this." She made a mocking expression of his usual expression.
"Okay, that's it. You are going down."
Soon, a full blowout argument broke out as Jui-Hae and Yu-Jin tried to stop the two.
******************🔮*****************
"Who the fuck does he think he is? Calling me "drama queen". At least, I am not an arrogant bastard." Bong-Soon threw her keys furiously at the table.
Yu-Jin was behind her, tired of hearing her mother's nagging throughout the whole car ride. After the fight, the detective was taken away by his partner while he was still cursing at her mother while Yu-Jin tried to take her mother away. None were willing to back down.
"Do I look like a monkey to you?"
Yu-Jin shook her head.
"Then, why did he say I look like one from a mountain." She walked around the hall with her hands on her waist.
"Maybe he is just jealous that you look young for your age."
Bong-Soon's face glowed up. "Yes! That explains it. That idiot was jealous of me!"
"Who is jealous of who?"
Upon hearing her dad's voice, Yu-Jin jumped out of her seat and ran towards him.
"Thank you, dad. Now, it is your turn to handle mom."
"Hey, What happened? Did anything happen-" Before he could finish his sentence, his daughter was up the stairs, running.
"Wow, what happened for her to be running this fast?"
Bong grabbed his arm and made him sit down on the couch. "I will tell you what happened." And with that, Min-Hyuk was in for a long night.
-
Yu-Jin slammed her door closed as she took a breath. She felt bad for her dad for leaving him alone with her mother but she could not handle any more of that whining.
She flopped down on her bed as her breathing calmed down. Now that she was alone, her mind was finally able to register the day's event.
She kept on having a flashback of those eyes. They looked familiar. The eyes reminded her of someone from her past. A past that she never wanted to revisit. The past that haunted her every night but kept it hidden from her parents. It was a rough time for all of them. She didn't want them to go through that again.
And not to forget the detective's words. Why did the detective say that her words were bullshit? Was she that transparent or did he know something? Either way, she hoped to never see the both of them.
*Cough*
