Rewrite Part Six

Patton's Perspective

I walked to my car and got inside. I started the car and began my journey to Huntington middle school so I could pick up Virgil. After 10 minutes, I finally pulled up in front of the school. My little brother was already there, waiting. I waved to Virgil with my trademark grin and he returned it with a small smile that made me so happy to see.

When Virgil slid into the passenger seat, I asked him about his day. Most people would say "How was your day?" but usually that makes the person feel like they have to say it was "fine" even if it wasn't. Instead, I ask "What happened today?" and he would explain, in detail, what he did that day. He would talk all the way home, and then he would throw the question back at me when we got home. And if anything bad happened to him that day, by the time I was done, he had forgotten all about it and we were able to just hang out. Then we would finish homework and eat dinner then just chill until we had to go to bed. That day was no different.

I learned that that day he drew a really cool picture in homeroom and was able to present it in art class and, for once, he was proud of it. Also, because it rained, he got a free period in P.E. His locker didn't end up being jammed like he thought it would be and he was almost, but wasn't, late to math class. He was going to start going to tutoring  tomorrow and he was told his tutor was really good, so he wasn't worrying like always. All in all, he said he had a really great day.

"What did you today?" he asked as we pulled into our driveway. Our front porch had a porch swing that creaked when you sat on when someone sat on it. We had a concrete sidewalk that went through our little patch of grass that led up to our front door. We walked towards the front door and, as I pulled out the keys and fumbled to find the right one, I told Virgil about my day. I told him about how I was running down the hallway and slammed into a boy, motioning with my hands as I told the story. When I finally found the right key and opened the door, I was almost done with my story.

"...and then he said his name was Logan and then I ran to get to my next class and then-OH!" I exclaimed, remembering why I was so excited to pick my little brother up. Well more excited than usual.

"What's wrong?" Virgil asked as he set down his black and purple backpack, worry lacing his question.

"Nothing. I just remembered something I wanted to tell you." I replied, putting down my own backpack that was a light blue covered in stickers.

"Oh! What is it?" Virgil asked, now obviously curious.

"Well, I've signed up to become a Assistant Teacher! At your school!" I exclaimed, happy to tell him the good news.

"That's great Patton! I can't wait! Now, I have a project due in a week, but I want it done early so I won't be stressing over it." Said Virgil walking to his room to get the materials for his project.

"I finished my homework in study hall, so I can help you! What's it about?" I asked when he set poster board, markers, and a couple paper airplanes down onto the dining room table.

"It's a science project for the science fair. My question is 'What paper airplane goes the farthest?" He replied as he motioned to the different types of paper airplanes on the table.

"Ooh. That sounds cool! How can I help? Please say I can help! Please?" I pleaded. I really liked playing with paper airplanes, and I thought throwing paper airplanes over and over would be fun!

"Sure." Virgil said as he chuckled, amused at how childish I was acting. I was right. It was fun!
