Chapter 2: New Home

The drive to meet the lawyer from the diner takes about another hour. During that time, the twins and I sing along to the radio, all off pitch and out of tune, but having fun with it. The closer we get to the address he gave me, the farther apart the houses get, along with being more opulent and jaw dropping. There are sprawling mansions with manicured lawns and gates surrounding the entire property.

When we get to the address he gave me, the gate is closed so I roll down the window to enter the code in the call box off to the side.

Driving up the path, the twins stop their singing to stare at the beautiful house in front of us. It's a wide two story house with a detached garage off to the right, a wrap around porch, and two balconies that can be seen from the front. They're both painted in a sky blue, with white trimming, the wooden steps gleam in the sunlight.

The path we're driving on separates into two, one going straight to the house, the other leading to the garage. There's a black car parked in front of the house, so I turn into the right path, and park in front of the garage, stepping out to look around in wonder. I keep the kids in the car as I get out and walk over to the other car. A man in his late thirties gets out and meets me halfway. He introduces himself as Mr. Buble, and then proceeds to tell me all that my grandmother left for me, which includes the house we're standing in front of, as well as all of the money in her bank account that totals, five hundred thousand dollars.

I'm struck speechless as he hands me an large manila envelope, and the keys to the house. He tells me that inside the envelope is the deed to the house, as well as the bank card for my grandmother's account, which will now have my name on it, as well as a smaller envelope that contains a letter from my grandmother that she instructed him not to open. I can't thank him enough as he tells me to contact him if I ever need anything, before he gets in his car and drives off.

Running back to my car, I let the twins out before telling them that this is our new house. They jump with joy before running off to check out the property. I follow behind them at a slower pace with a giant smile on my face.

The gate is only in the front of the house, leaving the rest of the property to be partitioned off by large manicured hedges. We round the right side of the house and walk to the backyard and the first thing we see is the large inground pool, it's almost the full length of the house and ends about five feet before the back hedge. The whole back wall of the first floor is glass, allowing us to see the large back room that has been split in two by a large granite breakfast bar. The left side is the living room that has bright white furniture; a large white couch, with white walls and a large flatscreen on the wall opposite the windows. There are sliding doors behind the couch, with a large potted plant in the left back corner. There's a small archway on the left side of the TV leading to the rest of the house.

On the right side of the breakfast bar is the kitchen with more granite counter tops, stainless steel appliances, and a round granite topped island. There are bar stools on the kitchen side of the breakfast bar, and more sliding doors behind the island. There's a double sink countertop on the back wall with a double sided fridge to the right of it. Another small archway is to the right of that with an over and more counter space on the right wall.

The rest of the rooms on the first floor include a full library off the living room, a large bathroom with a double sink vanity, toilet, and a large glass shower, a lounge room, and a dining room. A large foyer separates the rooms, with the library and bathroom on the right of the front door, next to the staircase leading upstairs, and the dining and lounge rooms on the left.

Before checking out the upstairs, we decide to look through the kitchen, which is completely empty, as expected. I send the kids upstairs to get a look at the rooms so that I can look over the information in the envelope. Just as Mr. Buble said, there is the bank card attached to some bank statements by paper clip, as well as the deed to the house, and a smaller envelope. I pull that out and empty the contents on the island. The first paper I pick up is a letter from my grandmother, it reads,

Sang,

I hope this letter finds you in good health. I wish I had the chance to know you, and while I'm not sure if you'll even see this letter, or this house, I have to hope that your father won't keep this from you, the way he kept you from me.

I'm sad to say that I'm not long for this world, and my biggest regret is that I'll never be able to meet my only grandchild. Your mother was my only child, and her passing left me heartbroken, but when your father kept you from us, I was devastated. I wanted nothing more than to shower you with the love and devotion that I can only hope you received from your father.

If you do find this, I wish you nothing but the best, and hope that you have love and happiness in your life. I want you to know that I love you to the moon and back, and when my time comes, I'll be watching you from the heavens. Be bold my darling. Be loving and open. Show the world the amazing person that I know you are, and when love comes for you, grab it by the horns and never let go.

I have left this house and all of my possessions to you, including my bank account which currently holds five hundred thousand dollars. If your father told you about the will, then Mr. Buble should have given you everything you need. Enjoy the house, and be well my darling.

Love always, your grandmother

Sangrida Sorenson

The letter is dated back two weeks ago, which makes me realize that this is probably the reason my parents were fighting. The other pages that were in the envelope are stapled together with a small note attached, also from my grandmother. The stapled papers are a birth certificate and a social security card with my name on them. The note reads,

Sang,

I'm sure your father never told you, but your mother never got the opportunity to register your birth. He took you away from her before she could. I was able to pull a few strings, and though I'm not sure if you'll ever have it, I want this to be something you never have to worry about. Be brilliant my darling.

Love always, your grandmother

Sangrida Sorenson

A small tear falls out of my eye as I put the papers down on the island. Even from the grave, this woman who has never known me, treats me better than the family I grew up with. This will be the start of an amazing new life. I can tell.

Thank you grandmother.

The sound of running feet hitting the hardwood floors draws me out of the sadness I found myself in. Finding out there was someone out there who loved me unconditionally, who had wanted me. The pain of never meeting my grandmother, and learning of her death in a letter. I bottle it up inside and shove it to the back of my mind. I have to keep a clear mind.

I can't break down in front of them. I have to provide for them now. I'm their rock, and they're mine.

"Sang, Sang," Riley calls out as they run into the kitchen. "You gotta come check out the upstairs."

"There's four bedrooms, and the bathrooms are amazing!" Carly gushes.

"Come on, come see," Riley says as he pulls on my hand.

"Alright, alright," I chuckle. "I'm coming."

Together, we run through the house and up the stairs into a long hallway with three doors on both sides of the wide hallway. All of the doors have been thrown open, revealing the four bedrooms and the two bathrooms in the centers. The bathroom on the right side has two doors connecting the bedrooms, a vanity sink countertop, and a large tub with a shower, as well as the toilet. The bedrooms are reflections of each other, with full sized beds across from the bathroom door, a small desk on the wall next to the door leading to the hallway, a small walk in closet next to the bed, a bedside table on the opposite side, and a beautiful balcony looking out to the backyard. I think the rooms on the left side will be the same, but am proven wrong when I walk into first room by the stairs.

This is obviously the master bedroom, it has a larger walk in closet, the balcony is a bit bigger and looks to the front of the house. There is a queen sized bed opposite the balcony with two bedside tables and is the only room that connects to the bathroom on this side. The bathroom is slightly larger, with a huge claw foot tub, as well as a standing glass shower, a large vanity counter top with the mirror spanning the length of the wall, a toilet hidden by a small tiled wall. I'm in love!

The last bedroom is a classic guest room, with a full sized bed, two bedside tables, and a dresser, no closet. There's a small desk on the right wall and no balcony, but the windows are a little larger than normal. Carly and Riley pick which rooms they want on the right side, left and right respectively, and then we go back out to the car to get our bags.

While the twins are unpacking, I decide to look for the laundry room.

There's gotta be one somewhere in here.

As I'm walking through the rooms, I notice that the archway between the living room and the library, is a bit wider than the one between the kitchen and dining room. So what do I do? I start pressing on the wall, and it pops open, revealing a set of stairs leading down. At the bottom of the steps is this large den with a washer and dryer in the back corner. There's a large round couch that's sunken in, with a fire pit in the center.

I absolutely love it here!

Going back to the main floor, I call the twins downstairs so that we can get some food in this house. We go out the front, and I lock the door behind us as I get ready to go to the closest supermarket that I pull up in my GPS. After looking at the directions, we get in the car and drive off.

When we get to the supermarket, I grab all the stuff I'll need for our favorite foods, and let the twins get some snacks. It feels so good to be able to have enough food for us and to be stable for once, that I kind of let them go a little crazy, but the smiles on their faces is worth it.

When we're driving back to the house, a purple sedan pulls up next to us at a red light. Through the open windows, I see that the driver is a guy around my age, with curly blonde hair and a happy smile. His radio is blasting a pop station and the twins laugh as he sings along to the radio. Since our windows are open as well, he hears this and looks over. I send him a small smile and a wave as I try not to laugh along with the twins.

He's really hot! God, Charleston sure does seem to have a few of those.

He sends me a wink and a smile as the light turns green and I pass him. His car stays behind us the entire way to the house, and I'm starting to get a little paranoid until he turns off at the house before ours.

Hmm, guess we have a hot neighbor.

His house is a little bigger than ours, three stories instead of two, but just as wide.

After we get the food in the house, I let the kids run free while I unpack the food. Once all the bags are empty, I head up to my room to start unpacking. It's time to get settled and start our new life.
