09. Thinking Out Loud

Niall Horan;

Damn. Damn, damn, damn did she have an amazing smile, a smile that I had yet to see full-blown. Every time I would close my eyes in attempt to sleep she would be right there, smiling at me. It was crazy, I think, that I had finally gotten a smile out of her. In all honesty, I deserved an award because that was hard to accomplish.

Imagine just how much more beautiful she would be if she actually opened up to me. Told me everything there is to know about her because honestly, that strange woman that came up to me was right, I have quite the interest in Piper Robinson and whether that was a fancy or not has yet to be determined.

But damn, I wanted to see her smile like that again.

It was Friday, and usually Friday would be my "make food for your family, you bugger" day and since I was getting a tad homesick I decided that I would make some homemade food rather than going to one of my planned restaurants. So after Piper's performance, I would head towards the nearest market and find all that I need for one of the easiest things to make: spaghetti.

The minute I step out of The Georgian, I immediately spot Piper walking along the beach not too far from her truck which was parked along the street.

Shoving the thoughts that had been with me since Wednesday, I quickly make my way across the street to meet up with her and I don't miss the chance at scaring her by whispering a soft "boo" into her right ear.

"Holy sh*t!" She yells, turning around to face me with narrowed eyes. Upon realizing that it was me who scared her she begins hitting me with her shoes that she was holding in her left hand. "Niall, that's not funny!"

"My laugh would beg to differ," I say in between chuckles. She hits me once more before huffing and marching away from me. I calm myself down and rush up to her, taking grasp of her wrist softly. "Okay, okay, I'm sorry."

"Don't touch me." She yanks her wrist out of my grasp but doesn't bother walking away from me again. "You're so immature and annoying. God, I can't stand you."

"Wow," I comment shoving my hands into my pockets and sending her a side look. "What did God ever do to you?"

"He cursed me with your presence." She doesn't skip a beat when it comes to comebacks. I pout in response but don't bother to fuel the fire, so we continue down the beach in silence until it's time for Piper to grace the corner of St. Monica Boulevard and Ocean Avenue with her talent.

There is already a crowd awaiting her presence, and the minute she strums her guitar the chatter stops and my heart flutters. This was one of my favourite songs ever, Ed Sheeran was a legend.

"When your legs don't work like they used to before, and I can't sweep you off of your feet; will your mouth still remember the taste of my love? Will your eyes still smile from your cheeks?" Ed Sheeran and Piper Robinson was one heck of a duo. "And, darling, I will be loving you 'till we're seventy. And, baby, my heart could still fall as hard at twenty-three. And I'm thinking 'bout how people fall in love in mysterious ways, maybe a touch of a hand. Well, me – I fall in love with you every single day and I just wanna tell you I am..."

As usual, Piper's pipes (haha) ropes in those passing by. Money is being tossed into her guitar case, and people are shoving others to get a better listen and for the first time, I decide to toss something into the case hoping she wouldn't disregard it like she does with the money and coins. Taking the slip of paper out of my back pocket, I take a few steps closer to her causing her eyes to flutter open and meet mine.

The verses come out softer when I approach her, clearly my proximity makes her unsettled, and I drop the note of my messy scrawl into her case before turning around and returning to my designated spot. Piper continues to look at me as she sings, before looking down to her case, eyebrows furrowed.

But I couldn't decipher if it was because she was singing the chorus much louder now or because she was confused with what I had put into her usual mix of green and silver.

When she's finished singing, I don't stick around. I walk with the flow of the crowd, and make my way towards the market.

The closest one was located about ten minutes away from the hotel, maybe less but I couldn't really tell as I had gotten lost, and since I only needed a handful of ingredients I decided against calling a taxi. As I enter the cool store goose bumps make an appearance on my arm, making me immediately wish I had brought along a jumper. Making my way towards the pasta aisle, I begin to hum Ed Sheeran's song which happened to capture the attention of the person who had just sung it about twenty-five minutes ago.

"So you're stalking me now?"

I startle from my focus of pasta types and look to my right to see Piper with a hand basket dressed in the same clothes but with her hair up in a ponytail and glasses rested on her nose.

"I believe its pronounced fate," I counter with a smirk before grabbing a random package and tossing it into the hand basket I held in my right hand.

She lets out a fake laugh and grabs macaroni shells. "I don't believe in such thing. I believe in creeps with an unhealthy obsession with me."

"You're not that great," I say even though my mind was thinking otherwise. She sends me a look, clearly not amused by my lying. I shrug, "You're not worth stalking."

"Yet you always come listen to me sing and sometimes go to the beach just to talk to me and then you throw in a piece of paper into my guitar case. That sounds pretty obsessed to me."

"Did you read it?" I question, ignoring everything else she said because yes, I am a little obsessed but in the most normal way. It was more of being intrigued than obsessed. I walk farther down the aisle towards the pasta sauce to which Piper follows. She doesn't say anything, she just watches me pick out a sauce for my spaghetti which makes me nervous. Sure, giving her my number was a long shot – she seems to hate me but what if she too thinks I could have an impact on her story?

"I have this jar," she says making me look towards her with confusion. What did that have to do with what I asked? She continues, "Everything that's put in my guitar is placed in there without a second glance. So, no, blondie, I didn't read it."

So she did disregard it like everything else. I falter and quickly choose a random sauce before turning toward the registers. Sure, I was hoping that she'd at least give it a glance and determine whether or not to do something with it from there but she didn't even give it the chance.

It was ridiculous to think otherwise.

"Niall, what the hell? It's just a piece of paper," Piper catches up to me with an exasperated expression.

I pay for my things and don't bother to look at Piper as I say, "No, yeah, I know. I just have to get going. Bye."

"Bye."
