"Wake up silly! You can't get away from work anymore," Paige whispered. I opened my eyes a sliver, and saw her facing towards me. Her hair was a mess, a strand in her mouth and others over her eyes. She was beautiful.
"Do I have to? I much rather stay here with you," I said.
"I have to work too, you know? You need to talk to the manager and get your job schedule," she told me.
"Ugh fine!" I said, sitting up.
"Good! All you have to do is go to the front desk, ask for Ralph, and explain why you are there! Make sure you take a shower, and look presentable! I picked out some clothing I am sure will fit you, so yeah! I'm going to my room to take a shower, and I'll see you in a few hours," she said, sliding out of bed. She then gave me a kiss on the cheek as usual, and left my room. I was alone once more.
Love. Such an odd feeling. Everything is okay when you are in love. Anything that makes you sad, suddenly doesn't bother you. When she was away, I was empty. All good relationships need space, but that didn't mean I had to like it. If you could call it a relationship. She would always stay in my mind. Her bright smile was still in my sight. Her warmth was a ghost beside me. My heart swelled for her, and her alone.
I took my shower, brushed my teeth, and got dressed. My outfit wasn't too bad. I wore dark blue jeans, a tan rope belt, and a simple dark green polo t-shirt. It fit me pretty well, just as she said. I slipped on some socks, put my shoes over them, tied the laces, and headed out the door. I then walked through a hallway, down a staircase, and to the main desk. I knew this place like the back of my hand now ever since I have been with Paige.
"Hello? Anyone here?" I asked, standing at the empty desk.
"One moment!" a man's voice said from a back room. I waited for a few minutes, and he came out of the room.
"How can I help you?" he asked me.
"Um, hello... My name is Brock, and I recently arrived here about a week ago... my... friend... Paige, she told me to come here to receive my work schedule... she said something about finding a guy named Ralph..." I said.
"Ah yes! Welcome Brock! I am Ralph, and she did tell me about your predicament! Haven't had a person with amnesia in a while! So! Do you think you will be able to use machinery? If not we can have someone teach you! Also, how are you with cleaning and organizing? Lots of those kinds of jobs! Are you a registered lifeguard? We could use another!" Ralph said, spitting out questions left and right.
"I can use machinery if taught, I'm decent at cleaning and organizing, and no, I'm not a registered lifeguard," I answered.
"Okay then! Give me a few moments to type up your schedule! Just a reminder that you work from eight o' clock in the morning to four o' clock in the afternoon, Monday through Friday! You get as many sick days as you deem necessary, just don't abuse the privileges, and if you do really well with your jobs, you can be put in the raffle to get some vacation days! If you need any specific items for your job, or things you wish to place in your room, fill out a request form, located on the bulletin board, and turn it into me! Here is your schedule, your job for today is mowing grass! Someone there should explain what needs to be done, so good luck!" Ralph said, handing me a piece of paper.
"Thank you... where exactly am I supposed to go?" I asked, taking the paper.
"Outside to the left, there is a barn a few yards away. Here is your key, inside there will be different machines. Each will have the key inside the ignition. Don't get any ideas though, the keys are chained to the machines," Ralph said, handing me the key.
"Thank you again," I said, and went outside. I did as he said, and turned to the left, and walked for a few yards. Eventually, I saw the barn he mentioned. It was a decent sized building, with two large automatic barn doors, and a smaller man door. I used the key on the man door, and walked in. Inside there was a strange assortment of machines, but I did recognize a few, such as tractors, and a lawnmower.
I went over to the mower, and on it, was a set of instructions, and a map. I read over the instructions, and memorized the map. In the instructions, it told me how to start the machine, operate it, alongside other things such as maintaining it. The map had a large area highlighted on it, which the instructions stated was the area that needed the grass mowed.
I opened up one of the large barn doors, started the mower, and drove to the area marked on the map. After I went through all the functions of the mower, I started my work. It was rather boring. All there was to see was an open field, and all there was to hear was the loud sound of the blades chopping. Naturally, my mind wandered.
—Dragged here, I was, to stay nonetheless. He too is here while I am gone in the blessed world of nothingness and dreams, and when I wake I am in the back of his mind, I having control of him... trap him here, can't you see him? Can't you see him? Can't you see me? Can't you see us? Hearing his story you know us to be sane, can't you see the mask I wear? Does it no longer please you?
—My eyes jolted open. I was still driving the mower, and I was almost to the edge of the marked area of the map. What did it mean? Why did I have these memories? Who was it that was in such agony, who was it that felt this pain? Who was he fighting? What did I have inside of me? I wanted to scream. I didn't want to remember! I wanted peace! I wanted happiness!
Then I began to think. Paige. What was it she told me? She said that I never had to remember again. I had peace with her. I was happy with her. Who cares what memories I have inside? I was creating new ones to replace them. I wasn't the madman. I was Brock. I had Paige. I was safe. I was no longer in that room. The doctor couldn't hurt me anymore.
Paige. Such beauty. I wanted more than everything to have her at my side. I wanted to be with her forever. I wanted to see her smile everyday. I wanted it to be me who made her smile. When she was with me, I was happy. The darkness I felt, the confusion I felt, everything that was wrong with me, was gone. All there was, was her. I knew true darkness. I knew all the dark places. Even if I didn't remember, I knew it was inside.
I saw a group of white flowers a few feet in front of me. For some reason, I wanted to stop and pick them. I turned off the mower, and grabbed one. It was a strange sphere of a hundred or so seeds, all white and fluffy. I had the urge to blow on the plant, so I did, and the seeds flew off the plant and off into the wind, each scattered into a different direction. I had another urge to make a wish on each of these flowers.
"I wish for Paige to be happy," I said, blowing the seeds on a different flower. I grabbed another.
"I wish for her to like me."
"I wish for her to see me."
"...I wish... I wish she would love me," I whispered. I closed my eyes, and puffed a gust of air onto the flower until all the seeds were gone. I then got back on the mower, and continued my work. After a few more hours, I finished the job, and rode back to the barn. I made sure I put the mower back into its place. I checked the machine to see if everything was turned off properly, then I locked up the barn, and headed to the servant headquarters.
"Welcome back! I hope the work wasn't too hard!" Ralph said at the front desk.
"It was... interesting," I told him.
"Well, I will take the key to the barn, and you are free to retire to your chambers or do whatever you like," he said, holding out his hand. I placed the key in it, and went up to my room. I went to the restroom, and looked in the mirror. I was rather dirty, caked in dirt and grass, the blades sticking to my hair. I decided to take a shower. The water was warm, and felt cleansing.
"Oh how the turntables turn," I heard Paige say. I instinctively covered myself, until I realized that there was a curtain between us.
"Ha ha, funny... How was your day?" I asked awkwardly.
"Pretty good! Just another day of waiting for the rich people. How was your day? I see by your clothing that it was pretty messy," she said with a laugh.
"Oh you know... mowing the lawn... can we continue this when I'm not... taking a shower?" I asked.
"Okay then! I'll be waiting on your bed. I heard that a good movie is airing in a short bit, so don't take too long now!" she said cheerfully, and walked out the door. I finished my shower, dried myself off, and put on my pajamas. I walked out of the bathroom, and jumped on the bed beside her.
"You did have a good day then?" she asked me.
"Yeah... I thought about you. Made the day go a lot faster," I said with a smile. She smiled back.
"Stop getting all soft on me now. Let's watch the movie."
