Rendezvous

Weeks went by, and I tried to learn everything about her. She enjoyed movies, meditation, and baking. She is very creative, alongside being quite lovable. She told me that she was American, but she wasn't sure of her lineage. Her mother walked out on her thirteen years ago. She traveled all over, never having a real home. Her mother left when they ended up here. She didn't have a set favorite color, nor a set favorite food. As long as the colors were bright, or the food tasted good, she was happy.

I wish I could tell her everything about me. I tried. I didn't know anything to say. All I could muster was thinking that I enjoyed her company. I never said that aloud. I was afraid. I was afraid she wouldn't see me the way I saw her. I was afraid of being hurt again. Who knew how many others had a chance with her. What others have done to try and win her heart. Too much truth can ruin a thing, so I sewed my mouth shut. It killed me. All my feelings for her, they were poison, waiting to be spit out.

"Are you okay?" she asked me. I snapped my head up.

"Just... lost in thought..." I said.

"What are you thinking?" she asked.

"...I was thinking something... a little crazy. It's not something I want to share..." I said.

"The rain again?" she asked. I looked up at her with confusion.

"Last night, you woke me up. Kept asking about the rain. Something about an umbrella in delicate hands, a faceless woman," she told me. My heart started to pound. What else had I said to her? Does she know how I feel? Did I reveal my past to her?

"Did I say anything else?" I asked cautiously.

"Nope! Your eyes just glazed over and you fell asleep again," she said.

"Oh god, I'm sorry... this is pretty embarrassing..." I said.

"It's okay! I know that you don't remember everything, and that it haunts you. I don't care. You are good enough as is," she said smiling. Her words warmed my heart. More time went by. Each day, my confidence was built up. Each day, I grew happier. I was overreacting. She didn't care who I was. She cared about me. I just didn't know how much. Then one morning:

        "Can I... nevermind."

        "What's up?"

        "It's nothing..."

"You sure? You can tell me anything!"

"It is more of a question."

        "Ask away!"

"You might not like the question."

"It doesn't matter. It's coming from you, so I doubt it."

"Well... haha... would you... who is standing in front of me... would you like... uh... to go out with me?" I asked cautiously. Silence.

"You don't have a boyfriend, right?" I asked.

"Aren't you my boyfriend?" she asked.

"Well... haha... am I? Not officially... unless you think it's official...?"

"I wouldn't mind making it official! So yes, I would like to go out with you!" she said with excitement.

"Okay! Okay. Okay okay okay! So how about I come to your room after work, and I take you out to dinner? A really nice dinner! And a movie! I've been doing good work, so I won a nice dinner," I said rapidly.

"Sounds good! I'll see you then!" she said, and walked out of my room with a happy skip. My heart screamed with joy! I jumped straight out of bed, swinging my fist in the air! I wanted to sing! I wanted to flip off the walls! I laughed, and jumped all around my room. I took a shower, and sang on the top of my lungs. I didn't care who heard me! I brushed my teeth while dancing! I couldn't stop smiling! I threw my clothing on, and practically ran to the main desk.

"Someone is happy today! Are you excited to mow the grass of the upper quadrant?" Ralph asked me.

"Today I am! I have a date! I have a date!" I sang, grabbing the barn key, and twirling out of the servant headquarters. The day was slow. This time, I didn't care. This time, doing work wasn't work, it was a game. The game was simple. Ride your horse to the castle, fighting monsters along the way. When the quest is done, you save the princess. The grass was the monsters. The mower was my noble steed. She was my princess.

Eventually, the work was finally done. As tired and achy as my body was, I walked with a brisk pace, and cleaned up quickly. I made sure the restaurant was reserved, and that we had a ride. I then went through every outfit I had, trying on things left and right, until I found a nice blue dress shirt, a blue tie, and black dress pants. I then brushed my teeth until I was sure they were white, and combed my hair till each hair was how I wanted. Now it's time to pick her up.

I slowly walked to her room, my feet hard as lead. I stopped at her door. I considered turning back. Who was I to take her out? Who was I to be with her? I didn't even know myself, but I was going to try and love her? Was I crazy? My brain said yes. My heart said knock. I knocked on the door. It felt like hours passed, waiting for the door to open. What if she forgot? What if she changed her mind? Five actual seconds passed, and she opened the door.

"How do I look?" she asked me. My heart caught in my throat. I couldn't breathe. She was... wonderful. Amazing. Beautiful. Elegant. Gorgeous. No one word could describe her.

"I see that you wore blue too! I had the strange feeling of wearing blue," she said with a laugh. Oh that laugh! My heart jumped out of my chest, and I wanted to give it to her. She was dressed to impress. She wore a blue evening gown that went down a little past her knees, and that also had short sleeves. She had a silver pin of an eagle in her hair, which was let down, flowing across her shoulder, and she wore a silver collar necklace, with a heart charm in the center. She also wore heels that matched her dress.

"Wow. You look amazing... and yeah... I had a strange urge to wear blue too..." I said, gawking at her.

"Well! Shall we go now?" she asked.

"Indeed!" I said, holding my hand out to her. She took it, and off we went. I led her down to the main desk, outside, and to a car that was waiting for us. The ride was short, like the conversation, as we sat in silence. Our hands were still interlocked together, but I didn't mind. Feeling her next to me was all the joy I needed, the hand holding was just a bonus. After a few minutes, we made it to the restaurant.

I got out of the car first, and opened the door for her. She stepped out, and put her arm around mine. I walked her to the door, where two men opened the doors for us. Another man came up to us, in which I handed the reservation tickets I had received from Ralph. He then led us to a table that was away from all the other guests.

"Fancy! Oh wow!" she stated with bewilderment.

"Only for you," I said. The meal was nice. I ordered lemon roasted chicken, with a side of one baked potato, and corn on the cob. She had a BLT sandwich, with a side of fries, and a small Caesar salad. We talked and laughed throughout the dinner. We grabbed dessert to go.

We got back into the car, and drove for another few miles. This time the atmosphere was much more relaxed, and the conversation flowed like champagne on New Year's Eve. We talked about everything under the sun, and the smiles never left our faces. We arrived at the movies, grabbed snacks, and rushed to our seats. The show didn't start for a few minutes, so we continued talking till the lights dimmed.

The movie was rather long, and kinda scary, but I didn't mind. I had my arm around her, and she had her head on my shoulder. We were two pieces, a puzzle, connected perfectly. I was finally happy. All thanks to her. I hoped she felt the same. Somehow I knew she did. Somehow, my wishes had come true.

The ride back to the servants headquarters was short. I wished it was longer. The night seemed to go by too fast, too quickly. I didn't want to leave her side. We walked slowly to her door. I don't know why. We both knew that we would end up together, asleep in each other's arms. But at that moment, we were going to separate. At that moment, we were going to sleep alone. We stood together. Then she pulled away, walking into her room. The door shut, and I stood there, outside her door.

"Idiot!" I hissed under my breath. That night could have gone better. I shouldn't have said all that stupid stuff. What was wrong with me? I knocked on her door once more. She opened it.

"Yes?" she asked, looking me in my eyes. I stepped forward. Slowly, my face came towards her own. Our foreheads touched, our lips inches apart. Then I kissed her.

"About time," she teased. I rolled my eyes, and we kissed again.
