Follow the Scent
"What's going on?"
Hiro gave a sheepish smile as he looked at his Aunt. Her emerald eyes were staring, like the judgmental gaze of a cat, at the pile of linens just hovering. He reached up and pushed one more blanket against the man standing hidden behind them."W-what are you talking about? I'm just- well. I thought I could clean. You know, pick my room up a little?" He watched as a brown brow rose up in suspicion. "Really!"
"And you've suddenly decided to clean your room?"
Hiro gave a nervous laugh, waving his hand ever so slightly. "Baymax said it would help with my, uh,creative slump! Isn't that right, Baymax?" Except it wasn't Baymax standing behind all the linens- it was Bucky. Hiro gave a prompt step on the man's foot and he let out a simple, one word answer.
"Yes."The youngest Hamada gave a beaming, nervous smile. Although his Aunt didn't look like she was buying it, she seemed to let it go. She shrugged.
"Well, at least you're cleaning your room," she said, reaching down to scoop up a notebook. She set it on the desk before she moved to descend down the stairs. Hiro let out a relieved sigh, his shoulders dropping. Bucky let a few blankets drop, trying to look over them and analyze the situation. Cass's hand rested on the banister as she turned to face her nephew again. Hiro straightened up and shoved yet another blanket into Bucky's arms, covering his recently exposed face.
"Come down for breakfast soon. It's getting cold," she said, her eyes trailing over the blankets, Hiro, and then the messy room, "And get outside today. You've been staying in too much." She then turned and began to make her way down the stairs.
"I will, Aunt Cass," Hiro called, moving towards the banister to wave at his now retreating Aunt,"Thanks!" As soon as her silhouette was clear of the narrow hallway, he turned to face Bucky. The man was giving him the most bemused expression, eyebrows furrowed, blankets toppling to the floor. Hiro gave a sheepish smile, scratching the back of his head.
"Heh, sorry about that," he said, shifting on his feet,"My Aunt- she doesn't know I brought you here, either. There's a lot of people that come to the cafe. I thought if she didn't know about you, she wouldn't mention anything. Safer for everyone, right?"Bucky didn't respond. Hiro gave a slight shrug and looked around the room. He swept up his fallen blankets and threw them on his bed. "Anyway, breakfast is ready. You hungry? I'll grab you something.Wait right here, I'll be right back."
He moved towards the stairs, slowing once he got to the top step. "Are you allergic to anything?"Bucky shook his head. Hiro gave a grin and then shrugged. "Cool. I'll be right back. Stay here and stay quiet." Bucky stared at him,one brow raised, but watched Hiro run down the stairs. Hiro felt a little wary, leaving the man alone in his room. What if he crawled out of the window and got caught later and put into jail? Besides, there were things that Hiro still wanted to know- like why he was also getting shot at. When he got to the bottom step, he took a quick glance around the kitchen. There were covered pans on the stove, though the stove was off, and the fresh scent of breakfast was quickly inhaled. He grabbed two plates and loaded them up with a hearty serving each, knowing that the guy he'd smuggled inside was probably starving.
As he loaded the plates, he could hear the sounds of chatter from the cafe on the floor below. The chime of the bell hitting as the door was swung open indicated more customers. It was nice to know that the cafe was getting more business, seeing as summer vacation had hit and many people wanted their fill of sweet food. He thought of going downstairs and possibly grabbing a few doughnuts. The thought was quickly dismissed, as he knew his Aunt would no doubt catch him- she always did. Hiro carefully balanced a plate in each hand and began to head towards the stairs. He narrowly avoided tripping over the tan ball of fluff near his foot. Using the tip of his toes, he nudged Mochi aside and continued up the stairs, ignoring the annoyed meowing behind him.
"All right, who wants breakfast," he said, sounding a little more enthusiastic than before. He half expected Bucky to be gone. Instead, he found the man flipping through a few of his notebooks and exploring the room on his own terms. Hiro sighed. "That notebook's not really full of complete ideas. So,don't start thinking you can finish them," he joked, setting the plates on his desk. He held one out towards Bucky, offering him the benefit of a good breakfast. It took Bucky a moment to take the plate, obviously weighing his options. "It's not poisoned. Trust me, it's fine." Hiro smiled a little, crooked tug of his lips as it was, and went to his own plate.
There was an awkward silence drifting between them again. Hiro didn't know exactly how much information Bucky was going to give him if he asked any questions. He mulled over the many approaches, but he wasn't sure of which one to choose. Finally, he swallowed down a thick gulp of food and cleared his throat. Bucky looked up, regarding him. Hiro hesitated once they made eye contact. "Listen, those guys that were after you-"
"Why did you make your armor?"
It was such a sudden change of subject that Hiro felt his mind stumbling. "Uh." He blinked slowly, looking at his eggs for a moment. He glanced up at Bucky, who was staring at him expectantly. It was obvious that no one just put on a suit and claimed it was for no reason. "Well, that's kind of a long story," he mused, poking his fork into his food. He took a deep breath and looked up at the man.
"One night, I was at this bot fight--"
The screeching of tires just outside made him pause. Before he could speak a word, he and Bucky moved towards the window. Each on the side, they peered through the blinds. At least six black SUVs were parked on the curbside. Hiro let out an annoyed huff, setting his plate on the desk. "They're probably doing sweeps of buildings by foot."He practically had his nose pressed to the glass. Bucky sighed beside him, staring through the blinds with a very worn and annoyed expression. Some of the men were heading into the cafe.
"They're probably going to ask about you. But, don't worry. No one saw us come in here."
He noticed a few men jump from the back in more S.W.A.T.Gear and even bigger weapons. "Geez... who are these guys?" He felt a cold arm on his shoulder and Bucky moved him away from the window. He gave the teen a serious expression before speaking just one word.
"Hydra."
