sixteen
dan found him in the parking lot, sitting against his car with a cigarette in one hand and a lighter in the other. dan's heart wanted to leap out of his chest and into his; he looked so sad, or maybe angry, his hair spilling into his face with his head tilted like that.
dan sat beside him, and phil didn't look up.
phil's lips were so pretty; thin and chewed raw, pink. the perfect shade of dusty rose.
dan gently took the lighter from him, and then the cigarette, lighting it and bringing it up to phil's lips. phil gave him a look and took it from him, balancing it between his teeth.
"i'm sorry," dan said finally, his voice quiet and cloudy. phil shrugged.
"s' okay."
"i won't shut you out anymore."
"okay."
dan sighed, taking the cigarette from him and taking a drag before pressing it against the pavement, and climbing into his lap. phil's eyes went wide and dan could feel his breath catch in his chest.
"dan," he breathed, his words tied together by fear. "someone will see us."
"baseball practice, and my parents are gone on saturday nights." he raised his eyebrows, praying phil understood. he seemed to, slowly. he nodded carefully.
"my parents go to neighborhood gatherings on sunday's... you could tell your parents you're studying."
dan nodded, grabbing his hands and intertwining their fingers.
"we can never leave anything at each other's houses, and i can't come home smelling like smoke. or your cologne. so maybe don't wear it when i come over..."
phil was grinning again. dan wanted to kiss him until his lips were worn down, and he was never able to kiss anyone else again.
"deal."
