Chapter 5: The Flea and the Acrobat

NO ONE'S POV:

(After Will's funeral, Y/N makes his way through the people who attended & stands in front of Will's headstone.)

(Y/N): [clears throat] So, you and I have never formally met before. That's kind of shocking with Hawkins being a small town and all. Okay.

(He kneels down to the head stone's height.)

(Y/N): I just wanted to say...I want to say that I'm sorry this happened to you. And that I should've found you but I didn't. I know I shouldn't feel responsible but I do. If I just patrolled more maybe I could've...Just know that I'll look out for your friends and be nicer to your brother.

(He stands up from the headstone to see Jonathan & Nancy sitting next to each other so he makes his way to them. Cut to Jonathan & Nancy.)

Jonathan: This is where we know for sure it's been, right?

Nancy: So, that's...

Jonathan: Steve's house.

Jonathan: And that's the woods where they found Will's bike and...that's my house.

Nancy: It's all so close.

Jonathan: Yeah. Exactly. I mean it's all within a mile or something. Whatever this thing is, it's...it's not traveling far.

Nancy: You want to go out there.

Jonathan: We might not find anything.

Nancy: I found something. And if we do see it...then what?

Jonathan: [sighs] We kill it.

(Y/N): Kill what?

(He walks up to them as Jonathan quickly shoves the map down his pocket.)

Nancy: (Y/N). Oh, uh, nothing.

Jonathan: What are you doing here?

(Y/N): Just thought I'd pay my respects...you know, as I was walking up to you two I couldn't help but overhear what sounded like you two going over a hunt.

Nancy: You're mistaken.

(Y/N): I must be. Because you don't look like the hunting type, Nancy. Jonathan on the other hand...

(He looks at Jonathan.)

Jonathan: What's that supposed to mean?

(Y/N): Nothing, nothing.

Jonathan: Right.

(He gets up & walks towards his dad's car with Nancy following him.)

(Y/N): Nancy?

(She turns to face him.)

Nancy: What?

(Y/N): I'm quite the hunter myself. So if you or...Jonathan need any tips or want me to tag along, don't be afraid to ask.

Nancy: I'll...keep that in mind. Thanks.

(Y/N): Hm.

(She goes after Jonathan, leaving Y/N. Cut to Nancy watching Jonathan get a gun out of the glove compartment.)

Nancy: Are you serious?

Jonathan: What? You want to find this thing and take another photo? Yell at it?

Nancy: This is a terrible idea.

Jonathan: Yeah, well, it's the best we've got. What? You can tell someone, but they're not gonna believe you. You know that.

Nancy: What about (Y/N)? He saw it too.

Jonathan: All right, let's tell him. There's no guarantee that he would believe us though. That it's some...thing and not like a freak in a mask.

Nancy: Your mom would.

Jonathan: She's been through enough.

Nancy: She deserves to know.

Jonathan: Yeah, and I'll tell her...when this thing is dead.

(Cut to Y/N walking through a forest.)

(Y/N): I should really do this more often, you know? Just walk around my territory as a person. It's actually quite nice and a change of pace. Saves me some time as well since I don't have to literally crawl out of my skin. [chuckles] Plus, if someone were to see me, it's better than them seeing an overgrown wolf. Though, it would be suspicious seeing a teen walking through the forest.

*GUNSHOTS*

(He hears gunshots so he follows each gunshot until he sees the source of it, Jonathan Byers. He also sees Nancy Wheeler walking up to him.)

(Y/N): So, they are going hunting. I knew it! But for what?

(Pan over to Jonathan & Nancy.)

Nancy: You're supposed to hit the cans, right?

Jonathan: No, actually, you see the spaces in between the cans? I'm aiming for those.

Nancy: Ah.

(Y/N): Looks like I'm far enough to where they can't hear me. It won't hurt if I stick with them to see what they're after. Just to make sure they don't get hurt or anything. Plus, maybe I'll catch them in the act. Not hoping for that of course but just looking out for Steve.

Jonathan: You ever shot a gun before?

Nancy: [scoffs] Have you met my parents?
Jonathan: [chuckles softly] Yeah, I haven't shot one since I was ten. My dad took me hunting on my birthday. He made me kill a rabbit.

Nancy: A rabbit?

Jonathan: Yeah. I guess he thought it would make me into a man or something.

(Y/N): Yes, a rabbit is a very "manly" kill.

Jonathan: I cried for a week.

Nancy: Jesus.

Jonathan: What? I'm a fan of Thumper.

Nancy: [chuckles] I meant your dad.

Jonathan: Yeah. I guess he and my mother loved each other at some point, but...[gun cocks]...I wasn't around for that part.

(He hands Nancy the gun.)

Jonathan: Just, uh, point and shoot.

Nancy: I don't think my parents ever loved each other.

Jonathan: They must've married for some reason.

Nancy: My mom was young. My dad was older, but he had a cushy job, money, came from a good money. So they bought a nice house at the end of the cul-de-sac...and started their nuclear family.

Jonathan: Screw that.

Nancy: Yeah. Screw that.

(Imagine Y/N in the forest on the right.)

(Y/N): She's a crack shot.

(Cut to them walking through a forest with Y/N following them at a distance.)

(Y/N): [whispers] They sure are determined.

Nancy: You never said what I was saying.

Jonathan: What?

Nancy: Yesterday. You said I was saying something and that's why you took my picture.

Jonathan: Oh, uh...I don't know. My guess...I saw this girl, you know, trying to be someone else. But for that moment...it was like you were alone, or you thought you were. And, you know, you could just be yourself.

Nancy: That is such bullshit.

Jonathan: [stammers] What?

Nancy: I am not trying to be someone else. Just because I'm dating Steve and you don't like him--

Jonathan: You know what? Forget it. I just thought it was a good picture.

Nancy: He's actually a good guy.

(Y/N): [whispers] Great guy.

Jonathan: [stammers] Okay.

Nancy: Yesterday, with the camera...He's not like that. He was just being protective.

Jonathan: Yeah, that's one word for it.

Nancy: Oh, and I guess what you did was okay?

Jonathan: No, I...I never said that.

Nancy: He had every right to be pissed--

Jonathan: Okay, all right. Does that mean I have to like him?

Nancy: No.

Jonathan: Listen, don't take it so personally, okay? I don't like most people. He's in the vast majority.

(Y/N): [whispers] I take it I'm in there as well.

Nancy: You know, I was actually starting to think that you were okay.

Jonathan: Yeah?

Nancy: Yeah. Yeah, I was thinking, "Jonathan Byers, maybe he's not the pretentious creep everyone says he is."

Jonathan: Well, I was just starting to think you were okay.

Nancy: Oh.

Jonathan: I was thinking, "Nancy Wheeler, she's just not another suburban girl who thinks she's rebelling by doing exactly what every other suburban girl does...until that phase passes and they marry some boring one-time jock who now works sales, and they live out a perfectly boring little life at the end of a cul-de-sac. Exactly like their parents, who they thought were so depressing, but now, hey, they get it." [scoffs]

Nancy: [scoffs]

(Y/N): [whispering] Damn. Letting it all out.

A Few Hours Later

(Late at night, the trio is still in the forest.)

(Y/N): [whispering] What are they hoping to find?

(A whimper is heard by Nancy.)

Jonathan: What, are you tired?

Nancy: Shut up.

Jonathan: What?

Nancy: I heard something.

(The whimpering continues leading the three to find a wounded deer.)

Nancy: Oh, God. It's been hit by a car. We can't just leave it.

(Y/N): [whispering] I mean, I could put it out of its misery if they decide to leave it.

Jonathan: I'll do it.

Nancy: I thought you said--

Jonathan: I'm not nine anymore.

(He takes the gun from her but before he can put the deer out of its misery, its dragged away.)

Nancy: What was that?

(The trio follow the trail of blood.)

(Y/N): [sniffs] It couldn't have gotten far.

(He looks up in the trees.)

(Y/N): I'd at least see the deer's body...

Nancy: Where'd it go?

Jonathan: I don't know. Do you see any more blood?

Nancy: No.

(They split up.)

(Y/N): Ugh. [whispers] Who do I follow? I'll follow Nancy. She is Steve's girlfriend.

(He follows & watches her as she stares at an entrance at the base of a tree.)

(She kneels down in front of it.)

Nancy: [yells] Jonathan?

(Y/N): [whispers] Don't go in there.

(He watches as Nancy crawls into the entrance.)

(Y/N): Great. Now I have to save her.

(He makes his way towards the entrance as we cut to Nancy in a more dirty, murkier version of the forest. Her flashlight starts acting up so she doesn't realize Y/N behind her.)

(Y/N): What the hell? [sniffs] This place just smells wrong.

(He looks at Nancy.)

(Y/N): She seems to be oka--

(He looks around her to see that her flashlight is shining on the creature that took the deer.)

(Y/N): [groans] Okay, okay. My priorities are protecting Nancy and getting her out of here. And then I rip out this thing's throat.

(He begins changing into his werewolf form as Nancy starts slowly backing away until she steps on a twig, snapping it, and alerting the creature.)

Nancy: [screams]

(She runs back to once she came only to crush into Y/N, as a werewolf. He looks down at her & back at the creature.)

(Y/N's thoughts): Okay, (Y/N). Protect the girl.

(Y/N): [snarls]

(He & the creature charge at each other as Nancy gets up & runs away. Cut back to Jonathan looking frantically for Nancy.)
