Chapter 2: Trick Or Treat, Freak

*3rd Person POV*

It was Halloween and Mike, Will, Dustin and Lucas all dressed up as the Ghostbusters. Although it seemed that Mike and Lucas both went as Venkman instead of either of them wanting to go as Winston. But the bad and probably most embarrassing thing about today is that they were the only ones who dressed up at school for Halloween.

So, through out the day they had been teased for wearing costumes but also Dustin and Lucas were trying to strike up the courage to talk to Max. Finally, later that day, they see her at her locker and they decided to finally approach her. Dustin then clears his throat to get her attention.

"Um...Hi, Max. I'm Dustin, and this is..." Dustin introduces as Max looks at them. "Lucas." Lucas said. "Yeah, I know. The stalkers." Max accuses and the boys stutter. "Uh, no. Actually..." Lucas stammers. "We weren't stalking you. No, we were just concerned because, you know, you're new and all." Dustin said. "Yeah, for your safety." Lucas adds.

"Mmm-hmm. There are a lot of bullies here." Dustin said. "So many bullies, it's crazy." Lucas stammers. "Yeah." Dustin affirms. "Is that why you're wearing proton packs?" Max asked them as she nods towards their homemade proton packs. "Well, these don't function. But...I do have this handy-dandy little trap here." Dustin said as he reaches behind him and grabs the ghost trap. "And look, it even opens and closes. Look, look, look..." Dustin said and he pushes the button and the trap door opens.

"Voilà!" Dustin chuckles. "It's cool, right?" Dustin asked her but Max just looks at them. "No? Okay. But, um...So, we were talking last night, and you're new here, so you probably don't have any friends to take you trick-or-treating, and you're scared of bullies, so we were thinking that it would be okay if you come with us." Dustin said to her.

"It'd be okay?" Max asked, confused. "Yeah. Our party's a democracy, the majority voted you could come." Dustin said. "Didn't realize it was such an honor to go trick-or-treating with you." Max said, sarcastically. "We know where to get the full-sized candy bars. We figured you'd want in." Dustin tells her. "That's presumptuous of you." Max said, which stuns the boys for a moment before Dustin recovers.

"Yeah. Totally. Uh, so, um...you'll come?" He asked her and she shuts her locker door and walks away. "We're meeting at the Maple Street cul-de-sac at 7:00. That's 7:00 on the dot!" Dustin calls out after her as she walks down the hall and takes a corner.

"Presumptuous." Dustin repeats then looks to Lucas. "That's a good thing, right?" He asked Lucas, who sighs then walks the other direction. "Is it bad?" Dustin asked again as he follows Lucas. "Lucas, is it bad? Lucas? Son of a bitch, Lucas. Is it bad?" Dustin asked, repeatedly, but Lucas doesn't respond.

*(y/n)'s POV*

"Where the hell is she?" Billy growled as we stand by his car sometime after the final bell rang. "I don't know. Maybe she got held up in class?" I suggested to him as he smokes his cigarette. "She knows she's supposed to be here." He growls just as I see Max on her skateboard, coming towards us. "There she is." I said and Billy looks over at her then takes another drag of his cigarette.

"You're late again." Billy said to her as I go to the passenger door and open it for her. "Yeah, I had to get catch-up homework." Max said. "Jesus. I don't care." Billy said, annoyed. "You're late again, and you're skating home. Do you hear me?" Billy said and Max and I share an annoyed look before I push the seat forward and she gets in.

Later, Billy was flying like a bat outta hell on the road, which was covered in the autumn leaves, Max was in the backseat as I was in the front passenger seat. The music was blasting as none of us spoke until Billy decided to speak up. "God, this place is such a shithole." Billy grumbles. "It's not that bad." Max said. "Yeah, I agree." I said. "No?" Billy asked and he pushes a button on the middle console to make the passenger window roll down and he inhales deeply.

"Mmm! You smell that, girls? That's actually shit. Cow shit." Billy said as he pinches his nose. "I don't see any cows." Max said as I roll my eyes and I push the button to roll the window back up. "Clearly, you haven't met the high-school girls." Billy said and I scoff at this. "I mean, ask (y/n) here. She knows." He said and I look at him with narrowed eyes.

"Oh, c'mon, I seen you with that one ugly looking girl." He said. "Robin? She's been showing me around the place." I said, defensively. "Really? Well, you two looked pretty close at the cafeteria." Billy said. "What? It's wrong to have some sort've connection?" I asked him, annoyed.

"So what, you two like it here now?" Billy asked me and Max "No." Max and I said. "Then why are you two defending it?" He asked us. "We're not." I said. "Sure sounds like it." Billy said. "It's just we're stuck here, so..." Max said and Billy hums at this. "You're right. We're stuck here. And whose fault is that?" Billy asked as he looks up at the rearview mirror towards Max.

"Yours." I muttered but it seemed Billy caught that. "What'd you say?" He asked me. "Nothing." I replied, quickly. "Did you say it's my fault?" Billy asked me. "No." I said, feeling a bit frightened but kept up the tough girl facade. "You know whose fault it is. Say it." Billy tells me but I stay silent, while I look up at the rear view to see Max looking slightly nervous. "(Y/n)..." Billy said in a sing song voice. "...say it." He said, in a quiet angry tone but I stay silent. "Say it!" He screams in my ear then he slams his foot down on the accelerator and we fly down on the road.

Up ahead, I see three kids on bikes and I look up at the mirror and see Max looking a bit worried. "Billy, slow down." Max tells him. "Oh, these your new hick friends?" He asked her. "No! I don't know them." Max shouts. "I guess you won't care if I hit 'em, then? I get bonus points, I get 'em all in one go?" Billy asked as slams his hand against the steering wheel, repeatedly.

"No, Billy, stop. It's not funny." I shout at him as he accelerates the speed and I see the three kids, looked like boys dressed up as the Ghostbusters, pedaling as fast as they could on their bikes. "Billy, come on, stop it. It's not funny. Stop!" Max and I shout as we get closer to the boys. "Billy, stop it!" Max shouts as I grab the wheel and jerk it over to the left, making his car swerve and avoid the boys as they dived to the side of the road to avoid us.

"Yeah! That was a close one, huh?" Billy screams at us then laughs like a maniac as we scream down the road. Both Max and I turn around to see those boys were safe as they stand up and stare at us.

"You sure they said meet them here?" I asked Max as we come upon the cul-de-sac of Maple Street. I had asked Mom if I could borrow her car to drive Max to her trick or treat meet up and I would go to the party as I really didn't want to be around Billy, not after the shit he pulled this afternoon. Plus I know he was gonna get extremely drunk and I didn't want to be riding with him at that point. Mom agreed as she wasn't going anywhere that night, so she gave me the keys and warned me to be careful and be back at a decent hour.

"Yeah, they did. We're just a little early is all." Max said, who was dressed up as Michael Myers. She told me about these boys, the ones Billy tried to make into roadkill, had invited her out and she was mildly interested in it. "Okay, well, you have fun. You be careful and meet me back here around ten o'clock." I tell her and she nods. "Okay." She said, smiling, and she starts to get out of the car.

"And remember, I get at least ten percent of the share of the candy." I tell her and she scoffs. "Ten percent?! That's too much. How about five?" she asked me. "How about eight? And that's my final offer." I tell her and she thinks for a moment before she nods again. "I guess that'll be okay." She said and I smiled. "I love you, Max." I tell her. "Yeah, yeah, love you too." She said and she walks off as I see many groups of kids start to surround the place. I then maneuver my way around and head off to the Halloween party.

Music was blaring and I was nursing on the cup of beer I had in my hand. People were dancing or talking really loudly and off on the other side of the house I saw a group of guys cheering as they had Billy doing a handstand on a keg, drinking beer from it. "...thirty-eight, thirty-nine, forty, forty-one, forty-two!" One guy shouted and Billy gets back on his feet as all the guys began to cheer, loudly, and pumping their fists in the air.

"Yeah!"

"Forty-two!"

"We got ourselves a new Keg King!" Another guy shouts and Billy cheers as well as everyone begins to chant his name. "Billy! Billy! Billy!"

"That's how you do it, Hawkins!" Billy shouts as the guys continue to chant. "Billy! Billy! Billy!" I just shake my head at this and take another sip of my beer. They head inside the house and I just scoff again as I head back inside and go to refill my cup.

Once inside, I noticed that girl, Nancy, going to the punch bowl and starts to dip a cup in it to get a big cup full of the punch, which going by my experiences in parties had to be spiked with the hard stuff. Steve came up to her and looked like he was trying to stop her but she argued with him before she begins to drink the cup.

I was honestly shocked by this. She didn't seem like the kind've girl that would drink the hard liquor. Nancy then walked away and Steve leaned against the counter and lowered his head. Not really knowing much about him or the situation he and Nancy are in, I kinda felt bad for him. I slowly headed towards the bowl before Steve raised his head then walked away and tried to look like he was enjoying the party.

I get to the bowl and scooped up some of the punch to make at least half of my cup. I take a sip and could tell that whatever the punch was spiked with was very strong. I was taking some cautious sips and leaned against the wall as I watch a bunch of people dancing or making out.

Minutes later, Nancy came back over to the bowl and grabbed her some more drinks before Steve came up to her and tried to take her cup away. She did seem extremely tipsy when she came up to the bowl. They fight over the cup until the punch spills all over Nancy's front and everyone stopped and stared at her and Steve as Nancy looks down at her shirt.

Then she glared up at Steve. "What the hell?" She asked before she walks off then Steve follows her towards, what I assume, the bathroom. The party goers resumed the dancing as if nothing happened. Moments later, Steve was walking out and he didn't look very happy as he heads out of the house. I frown at this before I finish my drink and decided maybe I need to head home myself. This party was kinda lame anyway and it was almost time for me to pick Max up.

Later, I pull up to the meeting spot where I see Max waiting for me with two of the Ghostbusters boys that Billy tried to run over. I pull up and Max goes to the passenger door and opens it. "Hey, Max." I said. "Hey." She said as she gets in and I look over at the boys. "You gonna introduce me?" I asked her. "Oh, um, (y/n), this is Lucas and Dustin." She said, gesturing to the boys when she said their names, and both boys waved at me and I smiled and gave a little wave to them.

"Nice Ghostbusters costumes, boys." I complimented and the boys smiled. "Thanks." They said. "Oh, check this out!" Dustin said and he pulls up the ghost trap replica from his hip, holds it up and presses a button and it opens. "Wow, very cool." I said and Dustin's smile got even bigger and I chuckled. "Anyway, we better get home. Mom and Neil are probably wondering where we are." I said and Max nods then turns to wave at them again before she shuts the door.

"So, how was trick-or treating?" I asked her as we drive down the road. "It was fun. There was a couple of other boys that were with us but...they had to leave." Max tells me. "Why?" I asked her. "I don't really know. This one boy, Will I think, he was kind of upset the whole time cause some kids were calling him Zombie Boy. And then all of sudden he ran off and when we found him, he was really freaked out. So this stick-up-his-ass-Mike took him home." Max explained and I ponder this.

"Huh, why did they call him zombie boy?" I asked her and she shakes her head. "No idea. I mean, I had heard he went missing for like a week but....I don't know." She mutters and we sat in silence for a few moments. "So, how was the party?" Max asked me and I shrugged. "It was alright. Billy making an ass of himself, everyone was dancing and the drinks were okay but...it was kinda boring." I said and Max nods a bit at this before she starts digging in her candy bag.

"Hey, you got my eight percent?" I asked her, smiling, and she rolls her eyes at me. Then she hands me a candy bar which was a full size and it was a 3 Musketeers. "Oh, cool!" I said and I try to open the candy and eat it as I continue to drive back home.
