EPILOGUE
THE TRUE KING, JON SNOW,
LOVED HIS LADY MAIA
AND HE WOULD DIE FOR HER
•••
MELISANDRE of Asshai felt her whole soul implode upon the death of Maia Sanders. She knew instantly while traveling to her destination of Volantis. As it was Melisandre's destiny to die in Westeros, it was Maia Sanders' to fight alongside Jon Snow and save him. Had she died because she truly was Nissa Nissa? Most likely; even Melisandre knew that while Jon hadn't married Maia, that didn't mean she still wasn't thought of as a wife in the eyes of the Lord of Light. The logistics of the prophecy still astounded her. While she didn't try to prevent her death, due to the Nissa Nissa prophecy, Melisandre could not control the wary fate of the Traveler. Perhaps she was wrong in her theories, for the Traveler did not always survive until the end. She had a guess that Maia would die during the Great War, enough to leave a significant impact on the world and to allow Jon Snow, the Prince Who Was Promised, to defeat the Great Other once and for all. Her fate had been fulfilled, and although her death frightened Melisandre, she knew it was something no one could control.
Freya Greyjoy left Beric Dondarrion at the Wall, after traveling with him and the Brotherhood Without Banners for almost four years now. She told him that she had grown tired of killing Freys and Lannisters, and knows that she must reunite with her true family before the army of the undead comes to kill them all, since she had survived their attack first hand. She now travels with Jon, since he is the last close friend from her childhood that she has left. Departing with the King in the North allowed her to finally meet up with her brother, Theon, again. He was a changed man, but her brother nonetheless. The Ironborn don't see Freya as a true Greyjoy anymore, but grow to respect her once Theon explained all the good deeds she did, and they respect him as well. Together, they go back to King's Landing to rescue their sister, Yara, and reunite the last of their family once again.
In the afterlife, Laila Ryswell felt almost relieved that Jaime Lannister had finally saved himself from the clutches of Cersei. As much as she wanted to pretend that Jaime only had Cersei, she knew, even from the spirit world, that Cersei's manipulation was getting the best of him. He finally freed himself and escaped King's Landing, and Laila hoped that he would find another person to love once again, who treats him right. She hoped he'd find that person in Brienne of Tarth.
Penny Poison did not end up bombing and destroying the Silence. As Euron Greyjoy departed King's Landing in search of the Golden Company, he engaged in a bloody sea battle with Penelope Sparr and the crew of the Hydra. Penny died along with her crew at the hands of Euron Greyjoy, and her war ship sank to the depths of the Narrow Sea. Penny's last words before Euron slit her throat were, "See you in Hell, cunt."
When Maia Sanders died, she was allowed to travel to any afterlife she chose. She was able to watch over Jon and Daenerys, and also Derek, if she pleased. Sometimes, she would scream at them for their false decisions from the heavens, even though she knew the people she once knew did not hear her. She was still able to travel to any universe in the afterlife, but she was not seen. Maia reminisced on her past mistakes, and hoped the next Traveler will choose wiser than she did. Jon still felt her presence around all of them, and knows that she is watching down on them.
Sansa Stark and her handmaiden, Aletia, wept when she received the letter from Jon about Maia's death. Sansa cried for days on end for her friend, with only her sister and brother to comfort her. This was a time that she should've been happy, now with Petyr Baelish finally being charged for treason and executed. But Sansa couldn't enjoy, not with this news. "I'm with you, Sansa," Maia had said. "I'll be back before you know it." So much for promises.
Bran Stark had been interested in meeting the Traveler, actually, since he had seen her only once, in a vision they shared together of Jon's birth. He wondered what she did with this information, but trusted that she probably didn't realize what was happening in the dream at all. The powers of the Traveler were quite fuzzy with him. Now that he was the Three-Eyed Raven, he was the last one left to relay the message of Jon's true parentage.
Jon Snow finally found out the truth about his family lineage. He was not the son of Ned Stark and some tavern whore, but the child of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. Upon hearing Jon's Targaryen name, Daenerys realized why Maia Sanders asked about the name, Jaehaerys, so long ago. Jon also remembered the name from when Maia mumbled it as she died. Maia, somehow, had a hint to Jon's real name. Despite all of this, Jon fulfilled his duty to Maia and married Daenerys Targaryen to strengthen his political alliance. Although his heart resided with yet another dead woman, Jon knew that an heir must be produced once the Great War is won. If Daenerys becomes pregnant with a girl, they both agreed to name her Maia, after the one true Traveler. Secretly, Jon wondered if he will still be alive to witness the next Traveler to come to Westeros, who are reborn every fifty years.
With the Great War growing inevitable, Jon holds her storm within his heart. It all started when she touched that weirwood tree, and now Westeros will be never the same without Maia Sanders.
