A Broken Dream
Yes, Patrick is indeed correct. I need to be vocal for myself. If not me, let alone others. I was lost in my deep thoughts when my phone buzzed. It was a voicemail from Alice.
"Cyni! I know it's late right now, but can we talk?", the voicemail said.
Her melodious voice felt soothing. My best friend. I cherish her so much that I fall short of words whenever I try to convey it to her; not to forget how she snaps at me whenever I do that. I still remember the day I first met her.
She was this overly excited child who would see the positive in every situation. She was the only one who was there for me even when I was not there for myself.
I sat in a comfortable position and called her.
She said-"Cyni!", her voice enthusiastic as always.
"Hi, Alice. What's up?"
"Nothing.", she giggled.
Why would she giggle for no reason? Is my best friend going nuts day by day? No, I can't let that happen. No. I'll take her to a doctor. Yes! That's the spirit. I can do it.
"Is everything alright?", I inquired.
"Yes and guess what-", she stopped in the middle of her sentence.
God. No. please no. Not my best friend. I prayed internally.
"What?", I asked; tension building up with each passing second.
"I bought us tickets for Selena Gomez's concert."
Did I hear that right? Is she for real? Selena Gomez!! I can't hold it anymore!
I jumped with joy. I asked her again-
"You ain't kidding right?"
"Of course not, silly. I know you're mad about Selena Gomez so I just bought em' up."
"I really can't believe it.", I was enthralled.
"You don't need to. You'll see it for yourself next week."
"You are great Alice.", my smile not agreeing to leave my face.
"I know I am and I am aware that you're smiling like an idiot right now.", she chuckled.
"How do you know? You got spy cameras fitted somewhere here?", I joined her happily.
"Magic~", she replied.
"How many tickets you got?", I asked curiously.
"I got five. And we're taking Parvati, Tom and-", she stopped again.
"Cyni, who else should we take with us?", she asked.
"Umm. Ella?", I suggested.
"She's out of town Cyni. Where are your brains eh?", she laughed hard.
"Hehe", I laughed it off.
"What about Patrick? Yes. Let's take him with us."
"No", I unexpectedly emphasized the word.
"Why?", she got curious.
"Alice, he's new. It would be uncomfortable.", I came up with a lame excuse.
"No, it'll be an opportunity to know him well. We can communicate with him better this way. I'll ping him on", she insisted.
"Okay.", I agreed but internally I was shaken.
Why him? Given the fact that he's so beautiful, I don't know how long can I keep my feelings to myself.
"I can hear your dirty thoughts Cyni", I was interrupted in my beautiful imagination. I could hear her laughing like a kid right now.
"What? No. I wasn't thinking anything.", I defended myself.
You got to do that on principle, especially when you're on the contrary.
"So, what you up to Cynthia?"
"Alice, I think I saw her today.", I brought up something undesirable.
"Who?", Alice asked.
"It was just a silhouette, I'm not so sure but my instinct tells me it was her", I tried to hint at her about it.
"The one you met last year?", she got it.
"Yes.", I heaved a deep sigh.
"I'm sure you'll meet her this time"
"Alice, no one believed me on that; not even my sister. Then why you?"
"Cyni, my heart tells me to. You're so kind, why would you make it up?", she spoke softly.
"I am so lucky I have you, Alice."
"Of course, you are!", she giggled again.
And then we talked about our childhood. Laughs filled my empty room. My voice echoed through the walls who joined us in our little celebration. After a while, we hung up and I slept through the extremely beautiful night that withheld me in its spectrum.
It's a brand new day and I'm so ecstatic. Guess what? It's dance team selection today. I quickly washed up, wore my uniform, and rushed to the breakfast table. My mom hugged me and wished me luck. She knows how much does her daughter, loves to dance.
I ran to the bus stop and took the bus to my school. I walk through the big doors of my school with my eyes glistening with the glory of me being a good dancer. I just love the way one can express so much in a short span while he dances. The tap of feet that stir the sleeping blood in one's body is my source of energy.
I reached school and saw Helena in my classroom. She gave me a deadly glare. On the other side, I saw Patrick. I waved at him, but he just won't care.
Once again, rude.
Alice entered the class jumping and as soon as Helena's sight caught her eye, she stuck her tongue out at Helena.
"Mannerless brat.", Helena roared.
"Not more than you.", Alice smirked and twirled her hair.
This gesture wasn't very well received by Helena. She was shaking and angry at the very same moment. What interested me more was that when I looked to my right, I saw Patrick smiling.
Does he love catfights? Shall I get into one as well? Maybe he will talk to me then.
"Cyni, it's dance team selection today.", Alice squealed and jumped onto me.
"I know. I know.", I moved her away from me.
"You are going to be amazing.", I earned myself a compliment from Parvati to which I smiled.
"Hi Patrick", Alice was super excited.
"Hmm.", he gave a nod.
So blank. Someone, please help him.
On the contrary, it's my P. ED period which stands first on the timetable for today.
I changed and went to the field. A bunch of girls started playing basketball while I sat on a bench. Alice and Parvati went to our Psychology teacher to submit their pending reports and assignments.
I was sitting alone and, from a distance, I could see Patrick interacting with Tom.
One hand in his pocket and in one he held a book. The white-colored shirt with our green school tie made him look heavenly. His slender arms that withheld the book moved swiftly as he talked confidently.
Just when I was admiring Patrick, I was cut off by a familiar voice.
"Pass the ball Cynthia.", Helena's best friend, Evelyn called out.
And just as I stood up to pass the lifeless ball, Patrick yelled my name, and even before I could figure out, something hard paced its way to my head at the speed of light and struck with my head.
Within the next few seconds, everything went blank. I couldn't feel or sense anything. The last person I saw was Patrick running towards me.
The last thought I had was my dream of being in the dance team, broken to pieces.
My heart, my dream, my hopes, everything was broken yet again.
