Chapter 15: Red Hearts And Black Wings
I hear yelling and a loud commotion going on. I ignore the sounds and continue to sleep. I feel something soft brush against my nose. I get an itch and I scratch it, but I go directly back to sleep.
"Damn! She's immune to itches now!" I hear faint voices, but I dismiss them and continue to sleep heavily. I feel myself being shaken lightly, but then the shaking becomes more rough. I shift positions and I hear myself start to snore.
"Come on, Hatter! We need to find a way to wake her up!" I hear more movement, but I think nothing much of it. I suddenly feel paws around my waist and then I feel tickling.
I'm startled and I nearly jump out of my skin. I hop on my feet and kick the figure in front me, sending the person flying down from the tall tree. I whirl my head around and notice a table in front of the tree.
"Huh?"
I say and take a closer look. I see teacups and teapots scattered all over the table!
"Oh no, not again.." I look around for the Mad Hatter, hoping he's alright from the impact of the fall. I spot him, but he's not moaning with pain, he's laughing his ass off.
I slowly look at what he's laughing at and notice the Cheshire Cat clutching his stomach, whining from the pain. "Oops." I slowly move down the tree with graceful swings and flips.
"Thank you." I tell the tree and place my palms on its wood. I let magic pump out of my hands and leave a marking. "This will protect you. If your ever in danger, this mark will tell me." I say and the tree bows and I bow in unison.
"Thank you, I will be forever grateful." The tree says and turns around to walk back to its position in the forest.
I slowly turn my head and notice the Cheshire Cat rolling on the ground. I smile bitterly and scratch the back of my head in embarrassment.
"Hehe..hi, Chessy!" I say and the purple striped cat stops moaning. His expression changes and he looks irritated.
"Hi." He says sarcastically, still clutching his belly, while the Mad Hatter continues to bellow with laughter. "Ahaha..ah! That was..so funny!" The Hatter says between breaths.
He suddenly stops laughing and lightly kicks the cat on his side. "Oh! Don't be such a cry kitty and get up already!" He says as he helps the mischievous cat off his back.
The Mad Hatter walks away from the cat and hugs me tightly. "You're late! I've waited here for weeks!" He says and I smirk at him brightly. "I've been busy with boys!" I say and the Cheshire Cat stops whining and stomps towards me with a serious face, along with the now frowning Hatter.
"What?!"
They both say at the same time. I lift my hands in the air and wave them. "I'm joking! I'm mean he did kiss me and he gave me the tongue, but that doesn't mean anything!" I say laughing with delight.
They both gasp with shock and the Mad Hatter starts shaking me. "Are you mad?! Haven't I taught you any better!" He says and I shake my head, winking at them. "No, no you haven't Mad Hatter!" I say sounding sarcastic at the remark.
The Cheshire Cat morphs from his animal form and turns into a man, but he still has his purple striped fur, along with his cat ears and nose. "Is he human?" The cat says and I nod my head.
His ears shoot up and he frowns with disappointment. "If your going to date men behind our backs, at least choose someone with a little more style!" He says and I wave my hand at him.
My smile is thin and I speak in a soft voice. "Actually, I'm not really sure I should continue to date him. He just kissed me, but I don't know how I feel about him. I don't know what love is, so I'm confused about his feelings towards me." I say and both of the men's expression soften a little.
The Mad Hatter pats my head and smiles brightly at me. "Don't worry, if you love him, you'll find out soon enough." He says and I nod my head understandingly.
The Cheshire Cat scratches his chin and makes a confused expression. "So? Why exactly were you sleeping on a Walking Tree? Not that I'm judging." He asks me and I remember everything that's been happening so far.
The demons, the sorcerer's threat, the mysterious gash, the insanity taking control, and finally the attack at my apartment. I lower my head and tighten my hands into fists. My expression fades into a frown.
"I need to get back to the human realm." I say and the two men look at each other with worried expressions. We walk to the Hatter's table and he pours me tea. "Alright, start from the beginning." The Hatter says and I gently hold my teacup, staring intently at the tea.
"A lot of things have happened lately, demons have found my scent, they've attacked my college, sorcerers and mages were working along with the demons, one of them gave me a threat about a stronger foe lurking in the shadows, and I've been poisoned with a potion that's supposed to increase my insanity." I say quietly and I raise my head.
I stare at the men and they stare back. They both look appalled for me. The Mad Hatter drinks his tea and addresses me with a serious expression. "I assume the demons poisoned you." He asks and I nod my head. "I also assume you've tried to control your insanity to outwit the demons?" He says after hitting the bullseye.
He doesn't looked pleased, but he's trying to remain respectful. "That will be a difficult task, but I know you will emerge in victory as you always do. Although, setting that aside, let's get on with the more pressing matter. Why are you here?" He asks and I clench my teeth, remembering the attack.
"Someone attacked my apartment. I don't know who it was because my eyes were blindfolded, I didn't want them to discover my identity while I was using my abilities, however I was still defeated and thrown into a portal. They sent me here." I say clarifying things for the men.
They both look shocked and in disbelief. The Cheshire Cat rises from his seat and speaks with anxiousness. "This isn't good! The worst case scenario is that whoever was still left in battle could be in danger, or worse!" He says and I nod my head solemnly.
I look at the Hatter and notice his serious, thoughtful expression. "We need to take you to the Queen Of Hearts, she'll know how to handle this situation." He says and I slowly rises from my seat.
I hold back my fears and I put on a brave front. "Let's hurry, we don't have much time left." I say and they quickly follow me. I wish I had more time to hang out with my friends. I can't, not at a time like this. I have to act like the true queen that I am. There's no room for child emotions when you have a high-ranking class like mine.
We walk for a while and finally arrive at the Red Queen's castle. Guards scatter around the gates and block us from entering. I walk in front and stand near the guards with amazing posture.
"Gentlemen, nice weather we're having, aren't we?" I ask and the guards take a look at me. They notice the uniform I'm wearing and the ancient markings carved around my eyes. They freeze with fear and quickly open the doors.
"We shall tell our queen of your arrival, Protector! In the meantime, please follow one of our guards and you'll be sent to one of our guest rooms!" He says quickly and respectfully as he points me to an even scared guard.
The nervous guard sends us inside of the castle and shows me my room. "Enjoy your stay, Protector!" He says politely, bowing to me and the others.
I walk into the room and see its decorated by the color red. Plush and heart-shaped pillows adorn the soft giant bed. Light red curtains hang over and surround the bed. Beautiful paintings of abstract art spread across the walls. There's a large and brick patterned chimney in the center of one of the walls.
There's a beautiful gown resting on the bed. "Wow, what a show off." The Cheshire Cat says as he picks up the gown and studies it. "Of course, the Red Queen would love to see you representing her while wearing this gown."
He says and mischievously grabs a pair of scissors from the Hatter's belt. "Let's say there was an accident and this poor dress didn't make it, heh." He says, but the Hatter stops him before he can ruin the gown.
"Oh, stop! You know your just jealous because Elizabeth hasn't worn any clothes that represent you!" He says and the Cheshire Cat disappears, his smile the last thing we see. "Fine then. I'll just go to the kitchen and snatch something to eat. I hope nothing explodes while I'm in there!" His voice echoes throughout the room and the Hatter runs to the door. "I'll keep an eye on him!" He says before leaving. I'm all alone in the room now.
You wish.
I walk towards the gown on the bed and study it as I hold it against my body. It goes all the way to my feet and its quite revealing. It's adorned with a variety of matching red designs all plastered with hearts on the rims. The gown is very poofy and wide on the bottom. The waist of the gown has a large black bow tied around it. Finally, the shoes that come with the gown have gold-colored playing cards. All of the cards are jokers.
Matches your personality, don't you think?
I ignore the comment and throw my cape in the walk-through closet. After taking a hot shower inside the enormous bathroom I change into the gown. "Yo, Capey!" I yell and grab the cape from the closet.
Don't call me that.
I ignore the cape and I hold it in my arms. "Carve the markings into my face." I say and feel magic spread across my face.
What? No "thank you"?
I look at myself in the mirror and my black hair is swept up into a braided bun, while dark red and black make up decorate my face, along with the ancient markings. "Thanks." I toss my cape back into my closet and head out the door.
We need to talk.
I walk through the halls and turn a corner. "Go on." I say quietly.
You haven't been given another dose of the blue potion ever since the fight. Why, haven't you gone insane, yet?
I continue to walk in the hallways and eventually reach a large double door. "I don't know, but I'm sure I could lose my sanity at any moment now." I say and open the wide doors. I walk down the stairs and arrive outside.
Wonderful. Now that Jinx isn't around, you have all the time in the world to practice your insanity.
I smile devilishly, as a shadow of darkness clouds my face, at the remark.
I walk on the open field and notice the Queen Of Hearts. I walks towards her, still grinning with satisfaction after listening to my cape. I watch the queen playing her favorite game as usual, croquet.
I watch as she uses her flamingo to hit the porcupine and make it fly in midair. It lands on the other side of the gate. She's horrible at this game, but her colleagues continue to praise her.
I walk towards her and stand right beside her without anyone noticing. "Your still horrible at this game, but at least you haven't caused any damage this time." I say after grabbing a flamingo myself and lightly hitting the porcupine under a ring.
"Oh! Your so cruel, Elizabeth!" The Queen of Hearts says smiling brightly as she turns around and announces my arrival. "Ladies and Gentlemen, we have an unexpected guest joining us today! Everybody come and greet our one and only hero, the Protector!" She says and everybody starts to flock around me as if flies sticking on honey.
"Oh, Protector! Your as lovely as always!" I hear compliments from a noblewoman and nod my head to show appreciation. "What you did at the battle of district 2, was simply amazing!" I hear a nobleman compliment me and before you know it, I'm drowning in a wave of people.
I suddenly feel a hand clutch my arm and drag me out of the crowd. "They mean well, but they become a little irritating from time to time, don't you think?" The Queen Of Hearts tells me as she pulls me back inside the castle's walls.
She continues to walk and drag me until I'm hauled into a spacious room. The Mad Hatter and the Cheshire Cat are waiting inside.
"Well! Let's get down to business!" The queen says as she sits down on a long wide table. All of us follow her lead. I sit down on one side as the others sit down on the opposite side. "Elizabeth, I hear from Hatter you've been facing difficulties recently?" She says, avoiding any formalities.
I relax my shoulders and release stress from my body. I sit up straight and address them. "Yes, in the midst of a fight my enemies tossed me into a portal. I wasn't the only one fighting, Siva and Jinx were still fighting when I disappeared." I tell Red and wait for her response.
She's scratching her chin and takes a moment to think. I look around and notice Hatter repairing a broken teacup with a bottle of glue. I turn to my right and watch Ches doodle imaginary pictures on the table.
Those two don't seem very interested. "This battle isn't insignificant. The demons have found my sent and sorcerers, mages, and even humans are working along them now. I've been poisoned with a potion that will try to destroy my mental state. It's happened before, so believe me when I say I'm going to cause serious casualties if I don't return to Jinx." I say rubbing my nails and digging them into the wood from anxiety.
I've tried to control my insanity ever since I arrived here. I don't know how long I can hold.
Hatter finishes repairing his teacup and slides it towards me. "What did I just do?" He asks and I shrug my shoulders. "You fixed it." I say and he nods his head. He slides the teacup again in front of him and fiddles with it. "Why?" He asks me and I frown with confusion.
What is he trying to do?
"Because the teacup was in pieces." I respond and he nods his head and settles the teacup upside-down on my head. "Just like your mind?" He asks and I glare at him.
He stares at me waiting for an answer. I respond weakly after regaining my composure. "Yes." I say and Hatter stands up and walks on my side of the table, the others watching him in confusion. "If its broken, well, then maybe you should fix it. Although you can't really do that while your being bombarded by issues, now can you?" He says taking the teacup from my head and placing it on my hands.
He turns and faces the confused pair. "Your highness, I think Ches and I can solve this issue if you gave us the necessary resources. You however, can help Elizabeth control herself from her insanity. The best way to help her cope is to comfort her. Something she desperately needs." He says and looks at me with a bright, sweet smile.
"I know she does." He says after patting my head and jumps on the table to walk over it. He grabs the confused purple stripped cat off his chair and drags him over the table. He hops on his feet while Ches lands on his bottom.
"Ow!"
Hatter ignores Ches and hauls him to his feet. The queen stares in disbelief as she watches Hatter grab Ches and toss him outside. He rubs his hands together and smiles at us.
"Well! You ladies have fun!" He says before he grabs the moaning cat's leg and drags him across the floor to whoever knows where.
I continue staring in shock before I hear a light cough and it catches my attention. I turn around from the direction I was watching Hatter and look at Red, her hand over mine. "It's getting late, you should rest." She says and I nod my head politely.
I get up, but she immediately stops me. "Wait! There's someone you should see first!" She says, but I shake my head. I walk away and I'm about to open the door when I hear another cry.
"Please your majesty! I'm sure it will make you feel better!" Red says again and I slowly let go of the door, breathing a sigh. "Alright, only because I owe you Red." I say and she smiles with satisfaction.
She hurries in front of me and grabs my arm, dragging me into yet another room. We walk all the way down the long corridor. Red stops in front of a door and knocks lightly on it.
I hear a faint 'Come in!' and Red hurriedly opens the door. The room looks like mine, but a few details look more modern and less feminine.
The room has a different smell, the scent reminds me of mints. I hear rummaging coming from another room and realize there's a bathroom in this room too. I look around and notice the belongings, they remind me of someone close to me.
Wait a freaking minute.
I take a closer look, agreeing with my cape, and I sniff the air one more time, I'd started to recognize the details. "I have a visitor for you!" Red says and a man steps out of the bathroom wearing a black sweater and beige-colored pants.
Knew it.
I stare intently at the man and my jaw drops open. The man is texting on his iPhone and hasn't noticed me. Red coughs lightly and the man raises his head. "Young Mistress?!"
The man with the iPhone is my wardrobe designer, Jean Dillard.
He runs up to me and hugs me tightly. I don't move a muscle and continue to gawk at the scene. "Ah! You've gotten taller!" He says looking me up and down. He stops talking and stares at me intently. "What's wrong?" He says as he removes a lock of red hair from above his dark blue eyes.
I continue to gawk, but I'm not interested in Jean. I felt surprised when I saw Jean, but now my attention is elsewhere.
"Elizabeth?" Red asks me as Jean clutches my arms with concern. I drag my arm up in the air and point at the horrific figure.
It's me.
The horrible thing from my last episode of losing my insanity. Disgusting, grotesque features adorn the thing's face. Blood drips all over the thing's body. It makes a horrible screeching sound that damages my ear drums. I pinpoint a sickening smell coming from the thing that's supposed to resemble me.
I'm stunned, I can't even move an inch. Red and Jean stare in the direction I'm pointing at and then stare back at me. "Elizabeth, what's wrong?!" Red says as she moves closer towards me.
Yes, what is the matter?
The disgusting version of me speaks in an all too familiar voice. I wiggle out of Jean's grasp and I move closer towards Red. I whisper in her ear and give her a command. "Get out." I say in a husky voice and stare at her intently.
Oh, well that's too bad. I wanted to introduce myself.
I ignore the voice and hurriedly push Red and Jean out the door. I stare at Jean and talk through jagged breaths. "I'm sorry, I can't talk now. Red will fill you in on the situation." I tell him and slam the door before he can protest.
I materialize a chain lock and tie it around the handle on the outside of the door.
Awe, isn't that cute. Do you honestly think a tiny lock like that, is going to imprison me?
I slowly turn around and stare at the deformed creäture. It smiles demonically and waves it hand at me. "Alright, what do you want?" I place my hands on my hips and stare at the creäture, emotionless.
We made a deal, You would desperately try to control me and I would outwit your every try, I intend to keep it.
It says clasping its hands together and holds them behind its back as it walks towards me. It stands right next to me and speaks in my ear.
Oh? What's that? Jinx isn't here? Oh dear, then that means I not going away anytime soon!
It chuckles in my ear and it grabs my cheek, making me face the creäture and to look at it in the eye. I glare at it intently, never wavering my eyes. I rip myself from the creäture's sharp grasp and stomp toward the balcony of the room.
I place my arms on the concrete fence surrounding the balcony and I look up at the sky.
You can't ignore me.
I lower my head and turn to face the creäture, that's now sitting on the edge of the balcony, legs crossed and head resting on its palm, right beside me. "Sure I can, I just can't make you shut up." I say recovering my smart ass gist. I look away and continue to stare at the sky.
I feel eyes glare daggers at me, but I ignore the feeling and continue to look up. I haul myself up on the concrete and place my feet on the edge. I expand my arms in the air and look down.
Having suicidal thoughts now, are we?
I sneer at the ridiculous comment and push myself off the ledge and fall down. I move my arms to place them beside my sides as my hair flies backwards out of my face.
I send for a force I haven't used in a while and concentrate on the ability.
Tonight I'm going to fix my mind like Hatter said, tonight I'm going to rid myself of my fears and I'm going to learn how to control my insanity if its the last thing I do!
"Aaah!" I scream from immense amounts of pain. Wings burst out of my back like a dagger passing through an intended target. I feel the black wings wiggle and swing violently as I try to recover my ability to fly. I notice pools of blood drip and scatter all over the sky as I waver in the air.
The world seems to spin around in all directions while I'm falling toward the ground. I scream with determination and demand my wings to fly properly. The wings seem to hear my command as they straighten and expand in the air. I flap them quickly and right before I was about to crash, I fly straight upwards.
I can hear the loud whistling of the wind as I continue to fly upwards. I immediately come to a stop in midair. I clutch my head and squeeze aggressively as I feel sharp objects push through my skin. My horns first come out slowly and painfully, but as I thrash and scream ferociously in the air, my horns shoot out of my head fiercely.
Thick drops of blood stream down my face. I'm panting extremely heavily, so when the blood drips near my mouth, I gulp down some of my blood. The copper taste makes me sick and I lose control of my senses.
I've viewed my surroundings through flashes I receive from shutting my eyes repeatedly because of the pain. I look around as I fall and notice a forest. The forest doesn't resemble anything from Wonderland and I notice a distinct smell.
I finally come crashing down and I dive towards an open field.
Nothing there to break my fall.
I curl my body into a ball right before I hit the ground. I'm weak, I'm bleeding rapidly and heavily, and I'm starting to lose consciousness. My magic fades and I feel completely vulnerable in my current health state.
As magic drains from my body, I feel the bones in my arm start to crumble and break.
I've recovered my broken arm.
The blood I had swallowed earlier, comes right back up and I lurch forward as I let a wave of vomit hurl out of my mouth. I cough violently and blood trickles down, out of the corners of lips.
I reluctantly force my body off the ground, flapping my wings to help support my weight. I lose control of my strength and fall on my back. I'm panting and sweating like crazy.
I start to drift off and I almost lose consciousness, but I'm alerted by a close rustling sound. My eyes shoot open and I listen carefully, all my senses alarmed. I look around and stare at the trees.
They look different.
"Psst!" I say awaiting a response.
Nothing happens.
I look closer at the tree and notice the dead branches and rotten leaves surrounding the crooked tree.
It almost seems lifeless.
I forcefully drag my heavy body, wings, and horns towards the tree. I hug the tree tightly and caress it softly. "Are you okay? Do you feel alright? Please, tell me what's wrong?" I say sweetly and wait for a response patiently.
It doesn't respond.
I look around the tree and I notice long, narrow scratches covering half the tree's side. The bark's torn and jagged. I almost gasp in horror when I see the damage. I look around me and notice half of the plants in this forest are wilting and/or already dead.
I hear heavy footsteps approaching me but I ignore the sounds. I move around and see the majority of the trees look as if there dying. I sniff the air and the distinct smell becomes more and more familiar.
I grind my teeth together and hold back tears. I tighten my hands into fists and I try to hold back a roar. I see a half wilted vine slither around my arm, trying to heal it. "No! Please, don't! I'm fine!" I say trying to rip the vine off me, it's grasp my arm tighter and heals the broken bone.
I let out screams of dismay and misery as I see the vine fall on the ground and wilt away in death. I sense danger but I continue to sob uncontrollably.
I'm in dangerous territory, I'm in one of the demon's bases. I clutch the tree harder and try to soothe it's pain out. I notice black figures surrounded me but I ignore them as I continue to hug the dying tree.
"Who are you? This land is forbidden to the residents of Wonderland." One of the demons tell me but I continue my misery-filled sobs. "She doesn't look like she's from Wonderland. What should we do?" The demons go on with their conversation as I stare at the other helpless and possibly lifeless trees.
My heart is pounding in my ears and my throat is on fire. One of the demons sniff the air and notice my blood drenched body.
The demon licks it's lips.
"You smell nice." He says and I widen my eyes. I'm breathing through ragged breaths now. I feel like my heart is going to burst out of my chest.
Invite me in. I won't disappoint.
I see the creature in the distance and I lower my head slowly. I let go of the tree and I stand up. The thing is now beside me. It puts its arm around my waist and clings to my body as it falls on its knees.
Accept me.
It says in a seductive and alluring voice. I glare at the demons and feel my eyes change color. A dark shadow clouds over my face. The moonlight glints in the sky and illuminates my body.
The demons gasp as they see my enormous giant black wings expand over me at full length, along with the horns poking out of my head. I'm trembling with anger and I tighten my hands into fists. Those demons are going to pay!
I lift my head and I smile devilishly. I nod my head in response to the thing's request. I suddenly feel my senses disappear and I only feel one emotion, hatred.
I raise my hand and let fire burn and flicker in my hand. I let my tongue slither out of my mouth and lick my lips. I toss the fire at the demons, but they bounce before I can hit them. I ignore the complication and enjoy the promising bloodshed.
I dash in front of a demon and stick my horns into his gut. As I rip them out, I laugh with pleasure after seeing him bellow with pain. Another demon races towards me with a sword. I let him get close enough, so the tip of his sword meets my hand.
I clutch the blade and it cuts into my hand, ignoring the pain as if it were just a paper-cut, I use my incredible strength to pull the sword out of the demon's grasp. I swing it in the air and lash at the demon's throat.
I gab the bodiless head and throw it at an approaching demon. He tumbles with confusion, giving me enough time to swing my left wing at him. The demon flies back in midair from the immense impact and I flap my wings to follow his lead.
I lower my head and right before he hits a tree, my horns puncture his throat. I pin the demon to the tree with my thick horns and he thrashes about wildly. I merely laugh and thrust my horns out of the tree. The demon falls on his front and his body goes limp.
I've killed all the demons that were surrounding me. All that's left is to kill the back up!
