Chapter 14: Her Majesty, In Wonderland
I hear a voice inside my head.
It's not insanity.
Well..not yet.
The point is, its the voice of my cape. "What do you want?!" I ask, panicking after Siva dropped the bomb on me.
Chant the spell I'm going to tell you. I need you to keep chanting it until I say so.
I hear the command and, even though confused, I nod my head. I throw the covers off me and prepare to chant the spell. I hear the words clearly in my head and start chanting them.
I try to focus solemnly on the words and not the loud crashes and booms coming from the living room. I open my heavy eyelids and stare into the mirror in Jinx's room.
My eyes have changed color. They changed from a dark brown to an enchanting purple. I keep chanting the spell, but then I start to panic. I realize the spell is the same one that I used to end the blue liquid from my bloodstream.
I'm going to gain my ability to walk again. I start to rummage Jinx's things. If the attackers see my eyes, they'll know I'm the protector. My uniform isn't the only thing that reveals who I am, the color of my eyes also names me.
It's a dead giveaway.
I continue to rummage the closest furniture near the bed, I haven't gained the ability to walk, yet. I find a strip of cloth and realize its a black handkerchief. I tie it around my head and cover my eyes. I've chanted the spell for a while now, but I still can't move my legs.
Try to wiggle out of bed. Your legs will be a little shaky, but you'll have to endure.
I hear the request from my cape and, as I continue to chant the spell, I force my legs to move. I use my powers and I transform into The Werewolf. Even though I can't see, all of my other senses have heightened.
I smell wood and clutch the desk near the bed. My legs feel like lead and I can barely move them.
Just barely.
My legs shake violently and I stumble a couple of times. I finally find the door and walk outside into the hallway.
I sniff the air as I lean against a wall for support. I smell something stench the air.
Its blood.
The scent isn't familiar. The blood must belong to the attackers. I clutch the wall and continue to drag my heavy body into the living room. I dig my claws into the wall as I turn a corner. My legs are barely supporting me.
I suddenly hear a scream and launch myself into the closet furniture. "Young mistress?! How are you walking?!" I hear a familiar voice and realize it's Siva. "Get out!" I hear a voice that resembles Jinx's and dodge what I feel is an attack.
I hear a clicking sound and then a loud bang. I duck under what feels like the counter and I sniff the air. I don't smell more blood, but...I smell gunpowder.
"What the hell..." I mumble under my breath and I start to howl uncontrollably. I think my predator instincts have kicked in! I rise off the floor and tighten my hands into fists.
My legs have fully recovered. I throw myself off the counter with one hand and growl, intimidating the men as well. I sniff the air and find Siva and Jinx's scent. On instinct, I ignore them, but the rest aren't so lucky.
My ears shoot up and I can hear movement in every inch of the room. I dash to a target and strike my claws into the victim's chest. I snarl and hiss as I hear another clicking sound.
I dash and sense movement. I run up to my target and grind my jaws into my next target's back. I tear at the flesh and nibble on the bones.
Tasty!
"What the hell is that thing?!" I hear a loud masculine yell and aim for it. I pin the man down and chew aggressively at his neck. I stick my claws into his lower chest and as I removed my claws, I felt chunks of meat stick to my freakish nails.
Even though I'm blindfolded, I can sure as hell still have fun!! My ears shoot up as I hear an array of bullets blast the walls.
I duck behind a couch and hear footsteps approaching. I throw my arms and clutch two necks at the same time. I'm ready to snap their heads off when I sniff their scent.
"You shouldn't sneak up on me."
I smirk as I smell Hector and Bree. "What the hell is going on?!" I hear Hector's loud voice boom in my ears. Since my senses have heightened, I'm sensitive to almost anything.
I frown and scrunch my face in an annoyed expression as I covered my ears. "Damn, If I had a nickel for every time I heard that one, I'd be a millionaire." I remark sarcastically.
I feel Bree place her hand on my shoulder. "What's with the blindfold." She asks, but I don't respond. She's just messing with me. "Stop fooling around and attack some of those intruders!" I yell and launch myself on the couch.
I raise my hands and curl my fingers to show my threatening claws. I howl menacingly and pounce on a target. I feel a sharp pain in my belly.
A bullet.
I fall on the ground and clutch my belly and howl with pain. "Please tell me that wasn't a silver bullet!!" I say and laugh at my joke. I sniff the air and smell Hector near me. I hear pounding and hitting, I guess Hector is covering me.
I suddenly feel a gush of air. It's filling up the room in a swirl and I assume its magic. "Jinx?! What are you doing?!" I yell as I assume Jinx is the one behind the magic.
Then I hear footsteps. I sense a hand on my belly, I tense up and clutch the hand, digging holes into it with my claws. "It's me." I sniff the bloody scent and realize it's Jinx.
I let go of the hand, but continue to howl from the pain. I feel a sensation twist around my belly. It's the purple orchid, it's healing me. "I'm not the one using magic. Humans are attacking, they have a mage with them."
He says and I gasp with shock. I clutch his collar and shove him closer. "Humans?!" I yell and he grabs my hands to soothe me. "Yes, Although there's no reason to act so surprised. Even humans can decide to join the demons." He says and I flinch after sensing movement near me.
I calm down when I realize it's Hector. I guess he's still fighting. I feel a pair of hands cup my face. "How are you walking?" I hear Jinx's question and I tense up. "I guess the potion must have worn off." I lie and continue to make my poker face.
He let's go of my face and responds. "Alright." He says under his breath, which makes me assume his still suspicious.
I hear a loud boom and I duck for cover. I smell my next target and launch for him.
I suddenly come to a stop as I feel myself float in midair.
A wave of bullets hits me and I scream and holler with pain. The force disappears and I drop straight down on the floor. "Young mistress!" I hear Siva's voice, but it's clouded by sounds of hitting and kicking.
I think Siva is trying to fight his way to me. His attempts are in vain as I feel another magic force lift me off the floor and drag me against my will. I snarl and bare my glinting fangs.
Their opening a portal, I assume since the air is polluted with magic. I bare my claws and dig them into something heavy, trying to hold on. "No!! Elizabeth!!" I hear shouts coming from Bree and feel hands on mine.
Instead of feminine hands that should belong to Bree, I feel something much different. Then I feel soft lips brush against mine. "Goodbye, Elizabeth." I hear a voice that resembles someone I know.
I gasp with confusion as I feel strong hands clutch mine. The hands let go and I fall backwards into the portal.
The last thing I hear is the worried cries from my steward butler, my guardian, Siva.
-
Trees of all shapes and sizes cloud the scene. Not ordinary trees though. The trees move around with tortuous motions and before you know it, faces appear on their hallow spots.
They look monstrous, they look menacing, and they look evil.
Which they're not.
One of the trees sprout their roots out of the ground and transform them into strong, sturdy legs. It slowly moves toward a mysterious figure of a girl.
As it comes closer, it notices she has long black hair. She looks very small and slender from far away, but as the tree continued to move closer, it assumed she must have been some form of warrior.
Blood dried stains covered the girl's body, along with bruises all over her face. Her naked body is completely covered by petals too. Which surprises the tree, it moves closer and tries to wake the poor girl.
After several failed attempts, the tree turns around and walks away. The tree leaves and doesn't return for a while, but when it does, it brings along two men dressed up in unusual clothing.
Very colorful and unordinary looking clothing. The two men walk towards the direction the tree had pointed them in.
Not at all concerned or frightened of the tree's appearance. If anything it looks like a normal and common thing to them.
The men move slowly towards the beautiful and fragile looking girl. One of the men reaches his hand out and feels the girls forehead, it's burning. He recoiled his hand in shock.
The other man looked at the girl with concern in his eyes. The same man who had felt her forehead, tried to pick her up. As he cradled her in his arms, he was even more shocked to see the petals transformed into clothing. A red/purple crop top with a matching skirt, along vine print.
The other older-looking man stared in awe and the one holding her, studied the girl. The tree walked back to its spot seeing as the men were handling the problem.
He quickly lost the features in his face and morphed back into a normal tree. The man carrying the girl back, noticed vines and plants slither around her body.
This intrigued him along with the other man. They both were about to leave when they noticed something floating in front of them.
It was a blue cape.
They flinched and prepared themselves to attack. The cape continued to float in midair without making any movement. The men lowered their fists and, seeing as the men were no longer a threat, the cape gently landed on the girl.
It covered her up as if it were a blanket. The men stared in awe, but shrugged it off, as if it wasn't the first time they've seen something weird.
They walked through the path hidden inside the forest and arrived at a cozy looking cottage. A women was hanging clothing outside.
She looked like a gentle and warm, young woman. As the men walked toward her, she gasped with shock. The woman's clothing was just as colorful and strange as the men's clothing was.
The woman rushed up to the girl and stared as if looking at a new-born baby. All of the them ran inside the house and placed her on their couch.
Their house might have looked like a medieval cottage from the outside, but on the inside, it looked like any other normal house in modern times.
Although it was a little off..kind of wonderland-ish.
~
I open my eyes carefully, aware of danger. I move my hands around and feel an unfamiliar fabric under me. I slowly rise off the material and as I look around, I realize I'm sitting on a couch.
I twist my head in all directions, looking around with a shocked expression. "Where am I?!" I pounce off the couch and rip a blue blanket off me. I land on my feet and then I notice vines are covering most of my body.
I'm wearing a familiar outfit and I realize I must have healed my myself after passing through the portal. I start to walk around the room looking for clues about my whereabouts.
Yo.
I nearly jump out of my skin after hearing an all too familiar voice. I growl as I notice the blue blanket was my cape. Then I glare as the cape floats in front of me. "What happened?!" I hiss as the cape floats in midair.
What? Aren't you going to apologize after you rudely threw me on the dust infected floor?
I gawk at the cape and clutch my head in frustration. "Just tell me where the hell are we!?" I yell, pinching my nose from the stress I'm feeling. I'm not entirely sure how we got here.
After passing through the portal, you landed in a forest and the owners of this house rescued you.
I raise an eyebrow and frown at the response. "Really? They didn't freak out or anything?" I ask with a little disbelief in my voice.
No, they were pretty calm about everything.
I shake my head in disbelief. I walk toward a window and notice people outside. I stare at them as the people continue to talk.
"I have a bad feeling about all of this. Maybe we should run now while they're distracted." I suggest and my cape floats near me staring at the window in unison.
We still need them. When we don't, then we can leave.
I nod my head and agree with my cape. I walk towards the door and I open it. I notice a pair of men practicing archery while a young woman is sewing clothing.
I walk down the steps and my foot makes contact with a basket. There's a bow inside along with a pile of arrows. I pick up the bow and then I stare at the men. The men seem very concentrated in their training. The woman seems to stare out into space as she continues to sew.
What are you planning?
I smirk and grab the basket full of arrows. I silently walk behind the men and stand without making any movement. "Damn." One of the men curses as the arrow misses the intended target. "Hell yeah!" The other more younger looking man, hits closer near the bullseye.
"Sorry old man, but I think you're getting a little rusty in your old age!" He banters as he pats the other man's shoulder.
I place the arrow on the bow and place myself to shoot it. "Age doesn't define us." I say softly and startle the men, causing them to turn around in shock.
They gawk at me as I shoot 3 arrows at the target, all landing on the bullseye. They twist their heads and stare at the target, bewildered at the scene. "Amazing!" I turn around and I notice the woman clapping her hands vigorously as she praises me.
I nod my head and smile thinly at her complement. I turn around and notice the men are still staring at me. I raise my bow again and shoot one last arrow at the target, landing on the bullseye again.
Okay, now your just showing off.
I lower my bow and tilt my head. "Maybe just a little." I say under my breath, so the others won't hear me. The younger man stomps towards me and points at the target.
"How did you do that?!" He asks as he glares at me with disapproval. "Practice." I say as I stare at him with a lazy expression, showing no concern for his actions. The other man laughs uncontrollably after hearing my remark.
The old man walks near me and lightly slaps my back. "Well, aren't you something!" He says and I place the bow back inside the basket. The woman walks toward me and grabs my hands.
"Even though you are tremendously talented in archery, shouldn't you be getting some rest, sweetie?" The woman asks me with the most nurturing voice I've ever heard.
I shake my head and smile brightly at her. "With all do respect, I can rest when I'm dead." I say and the woman nods in approval. The old man rests his hand on my shoulder and stares at me.
"Now that's living!" He says and he motions me to the forest. "Would you care to help me and my son hunt for our dinner, then?" The old man asks and I nod my head. His son, however, doesn't look so pleased, but he remains quiet.
"Well then! Now that it's settled, let's head for the forest!" The old man says as if he was a scout trooper. We all walk towards the forest and the old man asks me a couple of questions. "What should we call you?" He asks.
I place the bow so it can hang on my back as I speak. "Elizabeth." I respond and the man nods his head. Then I try to ask him questions instead. "What should I call all of you?" I ask and the old man smiles.
He rest his hand on the younger man's shoulder. "My name is Emmett, I'm the man of the house. In other words, I'm the father." He says and I nod my head. Emmett then points at the younger man. "This is my youngest child, Leo. He's turning 22 next month." He says and Leo continues to ignore the conversation.
I take a moment to look at the pair. They look-alike. Leo is quite tall and he has a strong, muscular built. He has dirty blonde hair and dark blue eyes. His father has the same body type, but his hair is white. Emmett also has a white beard. Their clothes are quite strange as well. Their very colorful and mismatched with all types of different designs and fabrics.
"And what about the woman?" I ask and think about the very dainty woman back at the cottage. She was taller than me, but not as tall as Leo. She had the same colored hair as Leo, but her eyes were a forest green. Her clothing was just as weird as the men's, but more feminine.
"She is my oldest child, Charlotte." Emmett says as he points at a tree. "There. You and Leo will hide in the trees as I'll hide in the bushes." He says and I immediately follow his orders. Leo seems reluctant and sour about the command, but he eventually comes with me.
He rushes in front of me and starts to climb first. When he's sitting on a branch he jesters at me. "What? Can't climb?" He says mocking me, but I resume my lazy expression. I cling to the trees and haul myself up. I reach my hand upwards and I grab a branch. I flip myself upwards and land feet first on top of the branch.
I smirk as I see Leo's frown spread across his face. After a while of hiding up in the trees, I start to get a little bored. Leo seems to feel the same way. I look around and notice Emmett waving at us. Leo and I grab our bows and look around in the direction Emmett pointed us in.
I sniff the air and I smell a hog's scent nearby. I follow my instincts and I find the pig. I ready myself for the attack. but Leo beats me to the punch. His arrow strikes the pig and the animal goes motionless. Leo laughs triumphantly and he tried to rub it in my face.
Although, before he can, I admit defeat. "Good work." I say and he stares at me speechless. I jump off the tree and land swiftly on my feet. I impressed Emmett with that landing. Emmett praises me again and Leo resumes his sour look of jealousy.
We all walk back to the cottage with the dead pig hanging over Leo's back. We all come to a sudden stop as we view the scene.
Demons are attacking.
"Charlotte!!" Leo yells and races toward the cottage. I dash after him and pull the back of his jacket, pushing him back with Emmett. "What the hell are you doing?!" Emmet yells as Leo recovers from the impact from hitting the ground.
Emmett races towards me, but I wave my hand fiercely at him. A shield of magic blocks them from coming closer. I've set a force field surrounding the cottage. I run towards the door and smash it open. I see an unconscious Charlotte laying down on the floor.
She's bleeding.
I run towards her and place one of the plants slithering on my body and entangle it on her's. It's going to heal her, but I still have to get her out of here. I rise and stretch my arm in the air. My cape comes racing towards me and devours me with magic.
I feel my clothing transform and I pump magic into my arm. It's still broken, but I've been using magic to use it properly. I'm pretty sure I lost my cast during the attack, I'm not sure when, since my eyes were blindfolded the entire time.
The hood lands on my head, but I remove it. My magic carves ancient markings into my face, concealing my identity. My eyes change color and I know they're purple now. "Get the woman!!" I hear loud cries coming from the other rooms and I see demons flock the halls.
I merely stand there and tilt my head as the demons notice me. I have an emotionless face. I cradle Charlotte in my arms and dash out the door. "Kill her!! She's the Protector!" I ignore the demons rushing out of the cottage as I rush to the worried men on the other side of the force field.
They stare in bewilderment and shock when they see me. I make a hole in the force field and toss Charlotte in. "Protector? What are you doing here?!" Emmett asks me with disbelief. The demons rush closer towards me and I close the hole.
No ones getting in or out!
The demons launch themselves on me and I call upon a cold force. Stalagmites rise from the ground, surrounding me in a protective semi-circle, and impales half the demons. I send for a sword and my belt materializes it in midair.
I catch the falling sword and jump off a stalagmite. I pump fire into the steel and slash it into the surviving demons nearby. Blood spills into the air and lands on me.
I send for another weapon and my belt materializes a sledgehammer in the air. As a demon tries to hit me, I jump off the ground, flying over the demon, and grab the sledgehammer. I twirl it in the air with a single arm and hit the startled demon in his gut, puncturing all his organs.
The demons pound on the force field and I race towards them. They're trying to get to the family. I change my weapon and my belt materializes a double-bladed staff.
Both blades on both ends means twice the fun!
I twirl it in the air and slash at the demons. I puncture their bodies and slash their throats. Blood squirting from their mouths, stomachs, and legs...exactly a day I'd call pleasant!
I remove the force field with a wave of my hand and dismiss my favorite weapon. I'm completely drenched in demon blood. My cape floats off my body and I transform into my earlier clothing.
I look around and notice the family is gawking at me with incredulous faces mixed with disbelief. I walk closer towards them and then I bend down on one knee to make eye level with Emmett.
"We need to talk." I say with a sangfroid expression.
~
After repairing the cottage with my magic, I went and took a shower in their bathroom. They were all waiting for me in the dining table when I stepped out.
Charlotte let me borrow her clothes even if they were a little big for me. I walked towards them and I sat in front of them. "Ask away." I say and they all looked a little hesitant, but they continued.
"Protector, why are you here?" Charlotte is the first one to ask me. "I was on other business, fighting back enemies and protecting the kingdoms as always, however during an earlier fight, my opponents sent me through a portal. I arrived here and you rescued me, but I am not aware of where I am. I assume I'm in one of the kingdoms, seeing as how you knew who I was." I say and they nod their heads.
Now that they know my situation it's time for them to talk. "Protector, you're in the country side of Wonderland." My eyes widen and I cover my mouth to prevent them seeing me gawk. I recover my composure and respond calmly. "Thank you, I'll be sure to let the queen know of your generosity." I say and they shake their heads.
"No, that's quite alright! We wouldn't want to impose on our beloved queen!" Charlotte says as she stops me from standing up. I grab her hands with mine as I smiled brightly. "My job as the Protector of The Kingdoms is to keep the Queen's citizens safe. You however, rescued me, kept me safe, and treated me as one of your one. You did all that without even knowing I was the Protector. I cannot let such kindness go unnoticed." I say and they stare at me with bright smiles.
Emmett stands up and shakes my hand. "You resemble the Queen in so many ways, Protector. You truly are our hero." He says and I shake my head. "I'm not a hero, I'm just doing my job." I say and they shake their heads, I look at the time and start to worry.
"I'm sorry, but I have to get going. If you'll point me in the right direction, I'll be outta your hair in no time." I say and I bow to show appreciation. Emmett stops me and hands me a giant basket. "Take this, It'll be a long tread." He says and I look into the basket, it's full of meals that are quite popular in Wonderland.
I smile and bow again. "Thank you." I say and they wave goodbye. I start to leave the kitchen when I feel a strong hand grab mine.
It's Leo.
"Do you have to leave so soon?" He asks with the most adorable puppy dog eyes I've ever seen! I turn and place my hand on his shoulder. "Yes. Unfortunately I have to, I have to return to the queen and report back." I say and move my hand so I can cup his cheek.
I lean closer towards him and kiss his cheek. He blushes lightly as he stares at me. "Be careful." He says and I nod my head. I let go of his face and walk out the door, leaving a concerned family inside.
Don't you think the kiss was a little too much?
I notice my cape float next to me as I walk into the forest.
My smile disappears.
"No, it was necessary. He'll come running after me when he sees the sun come down. I need a guide, I'm not familiar with this part of the country." I say and my cape twirls around in midair.
Oh ho! Aren't you a little genius!
The cape lands on my shoulders and Charlotte's clothes disappear as I change into my uniform. I stop walking and sit next to a tree. I hold my knees against my chest as I sit down.
Why didn't you just ask Emmett or Charlotte to guide you? Why Leo?
I start to cry fake tears. "Emmett would never leave his family alone after an attack. Although, Charlotte would accept my offer in a millisecond, she useless to me. She's a woman, she doesn't have any training or abilities. I'd have to carry her around when the trail would get dangerous, she'd just be dead weight." I say with my real, cruel voice and the rims of my cape fold around my body to cover it.
That and you're an expert at manipulating kind, young men.
I feel a drop of water on my face and realize it's going to rain. "Yes, I am." I say and as I snuggle closer toward the tree, I hear yelling and notice a familiar figure.
I laugh under the shadow of the tree and smile devilishly.
What a fool.
It's Leo, he's racing towards me. "That's right, just another pawn to play with during my game." I start softly and continue to fake tears. Leo rushes towards me and hugs me tightly. "Are you alright?!" He asks and I muffle a cry. I put my arms around him and caress his back. "I'm okay, I'm okay now that your here!" I say and cup his face with my hands.
I pull him closer and I press my lips against his. He kisses me back and I give him the tongue. I can tell he's blushing tremendously. I start to press his body against mine and he release his lips from mine. Gasping for air. "Don't leave me. Stay with me until I get to the queen." I say with a vulnerable, sweet voice.
Leo caresses my cheek and kisses me softly. "Of course I will." He says and continues to shield me from the rain. I look up and realize the only reason I'm not wet isn't because Leo is shielding me, it's because the tree is.
"How odd."
I say and Leo raises an eyebrow. "What?" He ask and I smile sweetly at him as I continue to hold him. "Oh, it's nothing." I say and start kissing his neck. His entire face is as red as a tomato! "We can't walk in the rain, let's rest for the night." I say and lower him down on the ground.
I place myself on top of him and he hugs me tightly. "Sleeeeep.." I whisper lightly as I morph into a siren. I start to sing a lullaby and Leo starts to drift off. I kiss him on his forehead and he smiles lightly. The lullaby ends and Leo is out cold.
Why did you do that? I thought you needed a guide?
I rise and get off Leo's body. I stand up and answer my cape. "I do, I just found a better option." I say as I tap the tree lightly. The tree moves around in a tortuous movement and before you know it, a face appears in its hallow spot.
It looks monstrous, it looks menacing, it looks evil. My type of guide!
"You were the one who found me. You were the one who actually rescued me, weren't you?" I ask and the tree opens its hallow mouth. "Yes." It says and I cling to it, I grab one of its branches and flip on top, so I can sit.
"The people who you brought to help me, lied." I say and the tree sprouts its roots out of the ground, transforming them into strong, sturdy legs. "I told them I would share their generosity with the queen. They gladly accepted my offer, they didn't even bring you up into the conversation." I say and the tree begins to walk over Leo.
"It's alright, I don't need a reward." The tree says and it's branches start to move, so its leaves can shield me from the rain.
"Such a wonderful and kind family. A shame they're greedy pigs. The son is no exception either, he only started having feelings for me when he realized I was the Protector." I retort as I continue to glare at the sleeping figure that is Leo.
"Yes, such a shame."
That's all I hear before I fall into a deep, comforting sleep.
