TEN: THE BODY
Through a window in the morgue, Sidney watched as Jonathan and Joyce were standing behind the glass as a coroner from State was showing them the body, which did have Will's face.
Sidney held Jonathan by the shoulders, who looked ready to have his knees give out. He gagged and coughed before turning away, leaving Sidney and his mother standing there.
She frowned, walking up to her friend and placing a hand on her shoulder. Joyce instead shook her head,
"You okay?"
Joyce didn't answer, instead shook her head. She could tell that she was still not convinced that her son was dead. "He has a birthmark on his right arm. Can you show that to me, please?"
Sidney furrowed her eyebrows as Joyce was inside the morgue. Sidney stayed behind, watching a few moments later. She took a good look at Will to examine, all seemed normal of the boy. Apart from her felt disgusted to see the sight of him there, almost wanting to make her vomit.
She let out a sigh, closing her eyes as she thought that it was a lost cause to try and look at the body, not if they willingly let her. She thought this was it until she remembered what Joyce asked of them.
The birthmark.
Will had it, even showed them it once because 'they were family to the Byers'. Sidney took a very close look at Will's right arm and she found nothing.
Not even as marks that it was cut off or removed. It was impossible.
But that means-
"Ma'am! Ma'am, I need you to sign!"
"I don't...I don't know what you think that thing is in there, but that is not my son!" Joyce flew out in rage, whirling around and pointing aggressively at the mortician as she stormed out of the room. Sidney decides to follow.
"Joyce, wait a second," Hopper slowly approached her, attempting to ease the tension.
"No," Joyce flashed Hopper a look in a warning and stormed from the office. Jonathan chased after her, ignoring the sounds of the coroner.
Hopper walked up to Sidney, with a confused and stressed look, "What the hell happened there?"
Sidney looked at him with a suspicious glance, "Body may or may not be Will."
Hopper straightened his eyebrows, "What? Come on, Sid. You can't be believing in this crap-"
"Look, just listen to me Chief-"
"No you listen," Hopper raised his voice, "This is insane! He's dead, there's a body that fits his description."
"Yeah but there's a 5% chance that at least, he's a fake," Sidney whispered angrily at him.
Hopper stepped back, stunned, "You can't seriously be believing in this crap, do you?"
Sidney crossed her arms, "I believe that she saw something judging by her looks. And I'm determined to the bottom of it."
"I'm only trying to help her come to terms with the fact that her son is dead," Hopper gruffed.
"You're not," Sidney angrily replied in silence, not releasing her bubbled temper in public. "Making her feel insane isn't gonna help anyone. It'll only make things worse. Look, I want you to look more into this but that's only if you're at least willing to even open the possibility of believing in something higher. If not then stay out of my way."
Sidney stormed out of the room, making her way to the doors before sighing and going back to Hopper, "Talk to the people who found Will. Make them spill out every detail and tell me everything. If you want to help and be a cop investigator. Do that."
Hopper looked stunned before pouting, "What? You can't-"
"Can and I will," Sidney glared at him, "And don't lie because I will know."
Sidney gave Hopper a look before leaving towards the door. Hopper watched her go in confusion, stunned. Worked with her for three years and never once had she been this stubborn, yet that attitude did get them somewhere in many ways.
Hopper sighed, leaning his back against the wall. He let out an annoyed groan, pulling out a cigarette to let out a smoke.
This woman would become the death of him sometimes.
Sidney didn't want to say all of that but with Will's disappearance still on the air and the missing of her daughter and Barb most likely going on the horizon. She had to be more determined, anything in the way will be met with force.
Once again, she found herself yet again in the house of Joyce Byers. She was at least fortunate enough to not be at the station right now. She could only hope that Hopper did what she asked.
After Joyce stormed, she did some checking and couldn't help but find the body displayed a bit odd. If Hopper wasn't getting out answers, she will but she decided that first, she was going to look after Joyce for the day and then start going out tomorrow.
Sidney knew that Joyce would be at her house after that whole event in that room, probably standing around the lights.
She knocked on the door, standing waiting as Joyce opened it and she was met with an anxious and shocked face.
"Sid?"
"Hey, Joyce. Can an old friend come in?" Sidney asked.
Joyce didn't say anything only blink a few times then let Sidney in, who stepped inside to look around to see the alphabetical words with nights on them.....and around the room.
Joyce managed a chuckle barely. "Will always love Christmas, you know. So, I thought if I-I put the lights up, I don't know, he... I'd feel like he was home somehow. It's silly, I know."
Sidney closed her eyes, letting out a small chuckle, "No. No, it's not silly. How is Jonathan holding up?"
Joyce took a deep breath. "He's...busy I guess..."
Sidney frowned, "You two had an argument didn't you?"
"You know, was talking about accepting that Will's dead and...preparing for a funeral," Joyce sniffed. "A funeral for someone that's not my son."
Sidney frowned, "Joyce," she walked forward towards her friend, "Think it from Jonathan's point of view. He's also hurt and grieving, he was probably crying in his room the fact that he gonna feel completely alone without his little brother. So to hear you constantly shout out that the person in that room wasn't Will, it must've hurt him deeply. I know you have no intention to but from Jonathan, it seems like you're saying Will wasn't your son and most likely delusional."
Almost like Lonnie would say..... The thought of that almost made the Detective's skin boil.
Joyce sighs, "I know, he doesn't or won't believe me but....I know that was a fake. He had a birthmark. You know it. Wyatt does too. Even Mike."
Sidney nods, "Yeah, strange that there wasn't. And yesterday, Hop and I were investigating the Hawkins lab, and we found something that may or may not relate to Will missing. Yo heard of the suicide of Benny."
Joyce nods, looking at her friend in confusion, "He...he died of suicide right?"
Sidney shook her head, "Benny was Hopper and I's friend. He knew him long enough to know that he was many things. Suicidal was never one of them. This was murder."
Joyce's eyes widened, "W-what? But what does this have to do with Will?"
Sidney sighed, "I mean don't you think it's strange that Will was missing and then the next night, Benny was killed? And now my daughter and Barb are missing. Now reports saying Will was found dead?"
Joyce took some thoughts into this, rubbing her chin as she motionally stammered around the room. "Yeah...yeah this feels strange but...what are you saying?"
"My theory is that Will was abducted. Benny probably found out or at least found something or someone that related to your son's disappearance. The people who probably took Will most likely found out Benny had something he wasn't supposed to have,"
"So they took him out?" Joyce exclaimed.
"Huh huh," Sidney nods, "Point is, Will was kidnapped and someone, most likely the lab, is covering up. That explains why Will was randomly found and he didn't have his birthmark."
Joyce remained silent, processing this large theory in her head while sitting down, "This....all of this, is a lot to take in Sid...."
"I know," Sidney nods, "But it's worth a shot at looking at. And if we're right then we have no idea how long Will (or the girls) have until...." Sidney shook her head, denying the alternative if they don't do anything.
Joyce stood up, "If you're right then we gotta storm into that lab!"
Sidney nods, "We will. I promise you that."
Suddenly they both heard a loud banging coming from the wall by the window.
Sidney quickly sat up, her gun being taken out as she looked around the walls trying to identify the sound. Joyce followed close behind.
As they stepped towards the surface and Sidney prepared to take a deep breath, readying to shoot, they both registered the unmistakable whimpers of a child.
"Mom?" A voice echoed. Sidney's eyes motioned widened, glancing at Joyce who gasped.
Will's voice.
Lights flickered on in the AV club room as Mike led Eleven to the Heathkit radio, sitting her down in front of the table where it was stationed.
"So with this, she's gonna find him?" Wyatt said, standing next to Lucas and Dustin from behind.
Mike gave him a nod as he switched on the radio so that they could hear the interference between the frequencies. Eleven closed her eyes and began to concentrate.
As the boys stared the radio began to switch between channels as if searching.
Mike watched in amazement. "She's doing it. She's finding him."
"This is crazy," Dustin let out.
"Calm down. She just closed her eyes-" Lucas tried to interject but suddenly the lights above their heads flickered off and the boys gasped in alarm.
That hadn't happened before in his basement with the handheld.
"Holy..." Wyatt started to say. A loud clanging came over the radio, and they bent closer to listen. "What is that?"
Mike just gazed at the machine, his heart beginning to pound.
The boys huddled around the radio as they listened to Will call out.
"Mom?"
"No way!" Lucas said in shock as Dustin and Mike looked at one another in amazement.
Eleven still sat extremely still with her eyes closed, taking no notice of the boys.
"Mom!"
Will's shout filled the room again and Mike clenched his fists tight.
For some reason...he wanted to scream.
"Mom!" Will yelled again, voice filled with terror.
They had to save him!
All at once Mike and his friends began shouting through the radio, trying to reach their missing companion.
"Will! Will!" Mike screamed.
"Will!" Lucas hollered into the microphone. "It's us, are you there?"
"Can you hear us?" Dustin desperately shouted. "We're here!"
"Hello? Mom?"
It seemed like Will couldn't hear them. Why couldn't he hear them?
Lucas also had the same question on his mind as he wildly asked Mike, "Why can't he hear us?"
But he was at a loss, horrified at what he was listening to.
"I don't know!" Mike admitted fearfully.
"I-is he really alive? Or, or like, some ghost or whatever?" Wyatt's voice was hesitant as if his mind wasn't sure if he could accept what was in front of him or not.
All the while, Eleven's eyes remained shut as she focused on Will.
"Mom...Mom, it's coming!" Will's voice was overtaken by fear now. "It's like home, but it's so dark."
'Home, but dark?' Wyatt mumbled, his mind suddenly flashed as his vision was suddenly met with the sight of a pool for a glimpse before feeling fear once more.
"It's so dark and empty, and it's cold!"
Wyatt felt the urge to panic, feeling himself being held by Lucas as tears formed around Dustin's eyes as they listened to Will's attempt to explain where he was trapped.
Lucas gave him a horrified stare.
'What was happening to their friend?' Wyatt panicked, glancing at El whose nose was now bleeding.
"Will?"
"Mom?"
No, the sound was definitely coming from inside the wall. But what could that mean?
"Will!" Joyce cried, running her hands over the surface.
Sidney turned to watch her dash out the front door searching for him, hearing her scream Will's name again, but she knew it was futile.
"I don't think he can hear us," Sidney muttered but was ignored sadly. Apart from her was starting to believe that this was unreal right now but the voice definitely wasn't coming from the yard.
"Where is he?" Joyce stormed back inside, facing Sidney.
"I don't know but...I think...." Sidney knew this sounded crazy but she feels like Will was somewhere else. Other than here. "....somewhere in the wall?"
But how?
"Mom? Mom!"
Will's shout filled the room, making Sidney quickly grab something as she hits the wall, tracking the voice from the wall.
"Will, I'm here! I'm here!" Joyce cried.
Sidney remained silent. Was that where he had been this entire time? Sidney made no time but to rip down the edge of the wallpaper and when she did she was met with some sort of translucent red barrier.
"What the hell..." Sidney muttered, looking at what seemingly looked like flesh.
"Mom!" Will yelled, voice closer this time, and instantly they both knew the figure in the wall was indeed her son. It was definitely Will.
"Oh, God, Will!" Joyce screamed.
"Will!" Sidney gasped, eyes widened as she attempted to pull Joyce behind her but stopped herself mid-way.
"Mom!" Will yelled again, voice filled with terror. "Hello? Mom?"
"Oh, thank God! Baby...Will!" Joyce sobbed.
A familiar chill shot up her spine as a low growl came from within the wall.
"Mom...Mom, it's coming!" Will's voice was overtaken by fear now.
"Tell me where you are!" Joyce begged desperately. "How do I get to you?"
The woman hopelessly clawed at the barrier in front of her. "It's like home, but it's so dark."
"Home, but dark?" Sidney muttered, furrowing her eyebrows.
"It's so dark and empty, and it's cold!" Will continued to cry out for his mother in anguish. "Mom! Mom!"
Despite how much he could see that it pained her to turn Will away, Joyce hollered back through the barrier, "Listen to me! I swear I'm gonna get to you, okay? But right now, I need you to hide!"
"Mom, please!" Will pleaded through the strange wall.
"She's right Will!" Sidney spoke up, circling around. "You have to hide. If that- whatever's inside found you, you would die. You need to run!"
The growling was becoming louder and both know that Will had very little time to get out of there.
"I will find you, but you have to run now!" Sidney demanded as Joyce welled up. "Run! Run!"
The monster screeched as she yelled,
"Run!"
Suddenly sparks flew as the radio fuses burst into flames. Wyatt jumped, letting out a yelp scream along with his friends as within seconds a fire alarm went off.
While he stared at the ceiling in alarm, Dustin dashed to the corner and pulled out a fire extinguisher. Removing the pin, Dustin squeezed the handle and swept back and forth over the base of the flames.
"No! No!" Wyatt yelled, "That was their only chance! And now it was gone!"
He turns to look at El, noticing the blood pouring from her nose and a sheen of sweat covering her ashen face.
"El," Mike questioned her, "El, you okay? Can you move?" Mike was growing more concerned, but she could only stare blankly back at him.
He and Wyatt each grabbed one of her arms and they heaved her to her feet, running her out down their school hall, pushing a cart on which they had placed El, as Dustin and Lucas followed close behind.
Sidney stood frozen, almost terrified. The wood that should have been present when she first pulled out the inner lining of the wall seemed to be growing back over the translucent barrier and with that, Will was gone.
She remembered when she first moved, there was something strange around in Hawkins but to think that it was something like this felt impossible.
Sidney continued to stare at the wall until Joyce snatch up her ax from the floor and in a rage, began hacking at the wall, bellowing in grief and fury.
With each strike she grunted, putting all her fear and frustration, her anguish of not having her son safe with her, into each swing of the ax.
The ax went straight through and she continued until she produced a sizable hole of which she could see to the other side.
Both Sidney and Joyce's faces morphed in bewilderment as they were only seeing their lawn. No Will. No cold, dark, or empty place. Nothing except the front yard and the car parked in the grass as it should be.
"It was like it never existed...." Joyce muttered.
Sidney stepped forward, glancing around the walls before turning to Joyce. "It was. We both knew."
