EIGHT: LOSS

The two cops found themselves back in the Byers' residence once again. It felt odd with the two due to the recent discovery and the task of giving out the haunting truth.

When they arrived though, the view of the inside of their home was different, much to Sidney's suspicion to where it was alarming to her. The Chief had a troubled face, indicating he couldn't see what she had.

After a moment the Chief spoke to Joyce, who was just staring, confused and terrified, at the same stretch of wall. All while Sidney sat comforting her friend.

"A trooper found something in the uh, water that's at the quarry. Our working theory right now is that Will...crashed his bike, uh...made his way over the quarry and, uh...accidentally fell in. The earth must have given way."

Sidney looked to see the look on Joyce's face, it was stammered nervously, and wasn't reacting normally, almost in complete denial.

"Joyce? Joyce? Are you okay?"

"No," She finally said.

"It's okay Joyce-" Sidney tried to consult her.

"No, no, no you don't understand," Joyce's voice trembled, "Whoever you found...is not my boy. It's not Will."

"Joyce." The Chief reached for her.

"No, you don't understand. I talked to him...a half hour ago," Joyce walked away from the couch and pointed down near the wall. "He was...He was here."

Joyce opened the hidden compartment and pulled out a wad of Christmas lights, making Sidney stammer a bit.

"He was... he was talking with these," Sidney asked, in a seeming sense of disbelief on her end. Apart from her wish this was nothing more than just a joke yet part of her knew the scary reality, it just wasn't something ordinary in her book.

"Uh-huh. One blink for yes, two for no. And...and uh...and then I made this," Joyce gestured at the alphabet painted haphazardly on her living room wall in black paint. "So he could talk to me. 'Cause he was hiding...from that...that thing."

While she didn't know if Hopper believed in this mess, she remained calm and brought a more warmful presence than the others around her had. Even Jonathan's face spoke itself.

"So, the thing came out of the wall and chased you?" Sidney asked calmly, walking up close to her.

"Yeah. Yeah," Joyce answered.

"Mom, come on, please," Jonathan moved forward to grab his mother's arms. "You've gotta stop this."

"No, maybe he's...it's after him! He's in danger!" Joyce desperately reached for the Chief's wrists. "We have to find him! We-"

"What exactly was this thing? It was some kind of animal, you said?" Chief spoke up, trying to explain away what she had told them. Sidney looked suspiciously and worried.

"Uh, no it was...it was almost, human, but it wasn't. It...it had these long arms and...it didn't have a face."

"Did you have some sort of drawing of what it looked like?" Sidney asked, grabbing her hands in comfort. "I want you to know that I still remain on your side and if what you told me is true, I need some sort of recognition."

Joyce shakingly nodded, quickly leaving out and finding the nearest piece of paper and drawing material she can find as she drew as best as she can.

Hopper leaned forward, "This is crazy," he muttered.

Sidney didn't have time to respond, only remained silent as Jonathan turned and walked away, clearing having heard enough. Sidney remained and watched, her expression remaining the same as Joyce finally finished her drawing.

"I-it looked like this! See! See!"

Joyce showed Sidney a drawing image of a seeming demon that you'd see in fantasy games, its mouth open as though of a flower. Almost like some form of parasite only more disgusting.

Sidney remained silent as Chief walked up, saying about his daughter's death and how he felt like he was hallucinating her. However, Sidney knows that this did not make her anyway better. Rather distraught.

"No you're...you're talking about grief," Joyce stammered once again, turning over to Sidney. "This is different."

Sidney remained silent, her face full of worry and sympathy for her friend.

"Please, Sid," Joyce pleaded, "I know what I saw. I-I'm not crazy, please! You got to believe me."

"I know you're not crazy," Sidney told her. But she had a feeling that Joyce would take that as semantics.

"No,.. You are. And I understand, but...God, I...I need you to believe me. Please," Joyce begged. "Please."

"Joyce," Sidney spoke, "I'm speaking the truth, and believe me when I say, I do not in any way think you're crazy. Look I think you should go to the morgue tomorrow and see him for yourself but I promise you that if what you're saying is true. I'll look to the bottom of this. But tonight, I want you to rest. Can you do that?"

Joyce whimpered, but Sidney once again grabbed her hands in assurance. She slouched in defeat yet still felt trustful towards Sidney.

Hopper bid his farewell as he walked out of the house. Sidney stayed around with her friend, making sure that she was calm and at ease until she finally convinced Joyce to get some sleep.

She looked over and walked towards Jonathan's room, with slow and soft knocks, she muttered a 'take care of her' before leaving out with Hopper.

To many, many, they have never once seen Sidney cry. To many, they saw her become calm, trusting, and someone who felt no sense of anger or lash out towards citizens. But never have they seen her cry.

It took a lot of willpower to prevent that even after tonight. Even though the drive home. Most likely have to keep her emotions in check in the house. Because she's not gonna be the only one upset in the house.

Sidney wanted to imagine how Jonathan must feel now, wanting to cope with what he believed was the death of his younger sibling. Apart from her knew that she and her family needed to be with them more than ever, most likely the Wheelers in toe too.

She knows Jonathan will feel more alone than ever. She knows Joyce will too. And she gets what they're coming from, as someone who understood more than most how it felt to be alone in a certain age.

She knew things would change after tonight.

All she could do is hope that she can take it smoothly and on a lighter note.

Sidney arrived back into her house, finding no trace of Jesse. She'd expect mostly that she was probably out with Nancy or Barb. Sidney thought of calling her or Miss Wheeler but first, she wanted to check on him.

She walked upstairs and saw that Wyatt's room was shut closed, to some surprise she heard some silent sobs. She felt taken aback, the news was probably on but there was no way he could've known about Will by the time she came back yet.

Sidney decided it was best to not question that yet, instead, she knocked on the door.

"Wy?"

There were no words that spoke out, only sobs that slowly started to worry her.

"It's me... its mom...I...I'm sorry honey but," Sidney knew he knew but decided it was best to just say it out right now. "It's Will....we found his body at the Quarry...I'm sorry baby...I'm so so sorry..."

Wyatt's sobs were all that she heard, making Sidney lower her head. She decided that it was best not to ask questions yet, knowing that doing so will only really make things worse than good.

So instead she left him, asking him to get some sleep as she left downstairs to the kitchen where the phone is, dialing Sidney's phone number to call her. She figured what next she could do was to call and make sure her daughter was alright only to find nothing but her calls being on the voice message.

This caught a bit of an anxious move on the elder Jones, deciding to call again, assuming that she was busy at the moment.

No pickup but only met on a voice message once again.

Sidney raised her eyebrow, curiously at what was going on with her daughter. At best it would've normally been a quick call of explanation than a "bye" but no pickup or callbacks. She was only met with just another voice message after voice message.

Sidney sighed, quickly deciding to call out to Wheeler's residence, expecting that Jesse might be there. Her heart pace grew a little thin and quick before meeting with a voice message.

"Damn it," Sidney muttered under her breath, she wanted to call back but she had a feeling that they, mostly Mike, would've found out about Will's death.

She knows that just as much as this destroyed Wyatt, this will crush Mike. And she can only really hope that the boys will take some process over what's happening. Perhaps she can ask around with them tomorrow.

Taking her mind off the Wheelers for a bit, she pushed her hair back and looked as though something was wrong. She felt in a parent state of panic as she decided to call anyone that her daughter knows, only to be met with either voicemail or people saying they don't know.

She decided to call the Hollands and after moments of silence, she was met with a feminine voice of,

"Hello?"

"Hey, uh Miss Holland?" Sidney started worryingly, "This is Police Detective Sidney Jones, my daughter is friends with yours and I was wondering if Jesse was with you and Barb?"

"Oh well..." the voice went silent for a moment before speaking, "Jesse's not here. And neither is Barb."

Sidney's eyes closed, her lips silently preying that something didn't happen to those girls. "W-was Barb there? The last time I saw Jesse, she left to study with Barb."

"Well neither of them came back," Miss Holland informed her. "It was like they disappeared."

Sidney lowered her head in silence, her breathing going into a state of panic.

"I'm sorry it's just.." the voice sounded as though she was gonna cry and Sidney brought the phone further.

"I-It's fine..." Sidney stammered trying to keep her cool just for a couple of seconds. "Thanks for answering."

Having no need to say anything else, she slammed her phone back inside his holder before placing her hands down on the counter table and lowering her head down, taking a huge sense of breathing methods to calm down.

First Will now Barb and Jesse. Sidney felt water draining down her eyes before wiping them away. She knew she needed sleep but a part of her couldn't after tonight and the thought that something happen to the two now missing girls.

To Sidney, this felt like a huge loss.

She failed at her promise to save Will despite what Joyce was pleading.

And now she fears that she's failed her daughter.

She had to get to the bottom of this. This now became a problem and if something or someone killed or took her daughter, then there will be hell to pay. Blood included.

She decided on what her options will be.

She wanted to stay around with her son, who was grieving over the loss of his friend. She can still hear the low sobs in the room and can already suspect that he's feeling all senses of pain and hard time dealing with the future fate that is in store for him and his friends.

Another she wanted to find Jesse and Barb, her parents said Barb never came back and Jesse was with Barb. This means she was either with Nancy, which was unlikely knowing the two don't get along much or the worst thing can be implied. She was taken.

But her mind still wondered at how the Byers are taking this. Joyce seems like she's at her lowest and so is Jonathan. Normally she'd trust the teen Byers but at this state, it looks like neither could hold off with the other for now. Not to mention after meeting with Lonnie there was a chance that the son of a bitch will come back.

And she'll be damned before he ever tries anything to Joyce or Jonathan ever again. She couldn't do anything about it then but she can now.

There's also the pleads that Will's still alive. Now it seems highly unlikely that Joyce's claims and protests were true but there is that one percent chance that it could be true. Something that the detective had to take it.

And the fact that this could be related to the now sudden absence of her daughter and Barb, told her exactly what she needed to do.

She hoped that wherever the girls were, they stayed with Nancy or at the very least are alright, vowing to investigate where she and Jesse where said they'd be at.

As for Wyatt, she decided that tomorrow she'll see if the Wheelers are free so that Wyatt can stay for a bit, feeling that it might make her son better if he was coping with someone who's in a similar position as him. After all, misery (or grief) loves company.

And if Joyce was right about Will being alive then she'll have to dig deeper and what better way than to check the body first?

However, her mind still remained on Jesse, praying that nothing happened.

Nothing at all.

It had taken a moment, when Wyatt had woken up, to realize that it hadn't been a dream.

That Will was actually dead.

He rolled onto his back and stared at the ceiling of his bedroom, struggling to find the energy to get out of bed. But what really was the point?

Will was considered Wyatt's little brother to him. He didn't find this fair, rather disgusting on how Will was picked on and treated poorly because of his differences. He recalled a time whenever they were at dinner, his father would make slurs at his own son, making him feel low and second questioning himself. But Wyatt held him up, alongside Mike as well, and Wyatt gave him a comforting smile and a knowing that it was okay.

Wyatt could relate to that honestly, often he dealt with being judged before. From peers, his sister's 'friends' and mostly lectured by his mom with her telling him he's 'alienating himself'. Mom always wanted him to be like the rest, but part of Wyatt knows that's not possible. For both reasons but no one would really understand that.

It honestly hurts him the most, from his peers and his sister he wouldn't be surprised they'd call him out like this but to constantly hear this from his own mother hurt him and distanced himself from her more than she'd realized.

Perhaps that's why he was so close around Will and the others, maybe because like him, he also found himself different, more than just being the quiet and 'sick' kid. He couldn't understand why he was called a weirdo or mentally sick. It all felt too confusing to the kid. But he felt comfortable in them, making him realize that he wasn't alone in such a world they live in.

But now that Will's gone....that comfort felt shattered.

Wyatt sobbed all morning as he looked at the clock at 5:59 turning 6:00. He didn't feel like going to school. He didn't feel like doing anything.

Wyatt wiped the tears from his eyes as he turned over. Then suddenly, the knocking on his door was followed by his mom's voice.

"Wyatt...."

He watched as she entered cautiously and found him lying in bed with the covers pulled up to his chin. She walked over to sit on the edge of the mattress.

"Hi. How are you feeling?" She asked.

"I uh...I don't think I can go to school today." Wyatt sniffed, deciding to have time for just everything.

"Oh, that's fine I suppose. I'm going to check on the Byers for today." His mom said to him. "Why don't you grab a book or something and come with me? We can stop by the video store on the way back, and pick out whatever you want. Even R-rated."

Normally that would excite him, but he didn't feel normal.

"I...just want to stay home today. Or well, maybe go to Mike's or something if he's staying.....Is that okay?"

"Are you sure?" His mom asked.

"Maybe, I...I suppose."

Mom sighed before nodding and getting up, "I'll call Miss. Wheeler, get ready. I don't want you to be alone in this house. Besides if Mike is hurting just as much as you are. You two need each other."

Wyatt nods, "Yeah, you're probably right."

With that, Mom left the room, leaving Wyatt to himself for a bit. Five minutes later, his mom came back and told him to wear something casual. Wyatt didn't care about wearing his favorite pink or purple hoodie. Only really cared about wearing something and going over.

When they arrived, Mom knocked on the door, and Miss. Wheeler opened the door, greeting the two.

When Mike came downstairs, Wyatt made no hesitation to jump toward him. Both gave each other a warm embrace, Mike rubbing the back of Wyatt's hair as he silently sobbed.

Mom noticed and frowned, quickly bidding farewell to Miss. Wheeler before readying to leave the house.

"By the way," Sidney said, which Wyatt overheard. "I'm not gonna be around much for a couple of days. Investigation cases coming up and down."

"I thought the search for Will is over?" Miss. Wheeler's eyes questioned.

"Uh...no. No," Sidney shook her head. "I'm looking at the missing pleads from the Hollands. Barbara's missing.....same with Jesse." She felt it was best to leave out Jesse, wanting to keep this as private as possible, believing that many could be involved stat but there was a feeling that at best she can rely upon the Wheelers.

"Do you know who could be involved?" Miss Wheeler asked her eyes in worry over Barb and Jess.

"I have a few," Sidney sighed, shrugging. "That's why I need you to look after Wyatt for a bit. This is gonna take me a while and I don't want the wrong people storming in and grabbing him because I'm onto them."

"Who?"

"I can't say, but you have to trust me on this."

"I see," Miss. Wheeler nodded, giving Jones a smile. "Well, I'll always trust you. Of course, if you like, I can watch over your son with Mike while you go do your police duty."

Both Mike and Wyatt sat and chatted for a moment downstairs before Miss Wheeler announced that she was leaving for work but left the boys to themselves.

As soon as the door was closed, Mike brought Wyatt upstairs to his room where he quickly scattered around his room.

Mike eventually grabbed the radio and spoke into the mic, "Lucas, Dustin, do you copy?"

Silence filled his room as the question went unanswered. Wyatt looked questionably as Mike continued,

"Lucas, come on, I know you're there! This is urgent. I'm serious!"

Wyatt gave a depressing sigh, not even bothering to say anything really.

"I'm not gonna stop until you answer. Lucas. Lucas! Lucas-Lucas-Lucas-Lucas-Lucas-Lucas..." Mike rambled obnoxiously.

His friend's voice interrupted his ramble."Go away, Mike. I'm not in the mood, all right? Over and out."

Mike quickly shot back. "No, not 'out'. I'm not messing around, okay? This is about Will. Over."

"What about Will? You mean about his funeral? Over."

"No, not his funeral," Mike spat. "Screw his funeral!"

"What?"

"Huh?" Wyatt raised his eyebrow.

"Just get over here stat! And bring Dustin. Over and out."

Mike sat down the radio and steeled himself for the headache that was soon to come.

A/N: So during my 4-day break, I was able to finally go and write two chapters. Wyatt currently doesn't know that Jesse went missing, mainly due to his mind solely being on Will. But now he's being caught off by whatever Mike is thinking. Sidney on the other hand, is fully onto these claims from Joyce, especially since she suspects that her daughter not being around throughout the day has something to do with the lab. A bit of a bummer that Jesse might not be around much in Season 1. But I thought of wanting to focus on each member of the Jones family member on each season, which so far is mostly Sidney considering Wyatt doesn't do anything game-changing yet and neither does Jesse (more of her actions and not her involvement, that does change something). Anywho onto chapter nine.
