Chapter 48
"At least it's not unbearably hot today." Chris says as he hands the attendant of the amusement park their tickets. "Uh, these are for me and the guy going through the handicap gate."
The attendant nods as he takes the tickets. Another attendant stamps their hands as each come through the gates.
"I love this place." Kelsey smiles as she takes Rob by the hand.
"I've only been here once but I enjoyed what I can remember of it." Tim laughs.
"Why can't you remember it?" Kelsey asks.
"Chris drugged him." Austin chuckles.
"What?" Kelsey asks, looking at Chris with a shocked look.
"It's a long story." Chris says, shaking his head as he pushes Tim as they begin to walk through the park.
"It was just some medication the wacky doctor had us on that f*cked us up." Tim explains.
"Tim." Rob shakes his head as he scolds Tim for his language in front of Kelsey.
"Sorry, screwed us up." Tim smirks. "But we don't take it anymore."
They stop walking in order for Chris to check out the map of the park. He and Avi look over the map as the others talk about the rides that they liked.
Chris points to something on the map and gives Avi a quick smile.
"Do you want to go there first?" Avi asks in a quiet voice.
"Think we should?" Chris asks.
"We're still clean." Avi chuckles. "If you wait, we'll be hot, sweaty and probably wet from the water rides."
"True." Chris nods. "Okay, let's do this."
"So, are we going to the rides now?" Adam asks as he slides his arm around Avi.
"Well, I wanna go do something first." Chris says as he begins to push Tim's wheelchair.
"Where are we going?" Tim asks, looking up so he could see Chris.
"You'll see." Chris smiles as he leans down kissing Tim on the forehead.
They walk a pretty good distance until they reach an area beautifully decorated with plenty of trees and flowers.
"This is absolutely beautiful." Kelsey says.
"Wait. Is that what I think it is?" Chance asks as he sees a log chapel in amongst the pines.
Tim reaches down grabbing the wheels of his chair, bringing the chair to an abrupt stop. He quickly turns his chair around and stares at Chris with a shocked look on his face.
"Surprise, Sweetheart." Chris smiles as he gently rubs Tim's cheek.
"Oh. My. God. Are yall getting married?" Adam asks with a huge grin.
"A .. Are...Are w..we?" Tim asks quietly.
"You said that you wanted to get married as soon as possible." Chris smiles. "Why not today. Why not right now."
"But .. But what about rings? We don't have any rings." Tim says, shaking his head slightly.
"Avi?" Chris smiles as he holds out his hand.
Avi chuckles as he reaches into the small backpack that he was carrying. He pulls out two velvet covered ring boxes.
"You knew?" Adam grins.
"Yeah, he knew. I needed help to get this all planned and I knew the rest of you guys would have let my surprise slip to Timmy." Chris laughs as he takes the rings and opens one to show Tim.
"Oh my God." Tim whispers as he lays a shaking hand on the ring. "It's beautiful."
"They're both just alike." Chris smiles. "I'm glad you like it."
"I love it." Tim says, quickly wiping a tear. "So this is really happening?"
"It's really happening." Chris nods.
"This is one of the most romantic moments I have ever experienced." Kelsey giggles as she, herself, wipes a tear.
"Well, let's do this." Rob chuckles, rubbing his hands together.
"But .. But look how I'm dressed." Tim says as he looks down at his jeans and Johnny Cash tee shirt.
"You're beautiful, Sweetie." Chris smiles.
"You look fine, Cuz." Chance smiles as he stoops down beside Tim's chair and takes him by the hand. "This is what you've been wanting for a long time."
"Okay." Tim says softly as he runs a hand nervously through his hair. "Okay, let's do this." A huge smile coming across his face.
"Could I help you, gentlemen?" An older man asks as they walk into the chapel.
"Yes, I'm Chris Rupp. I called you yesterday?" Chris smiles as he shakes the man's hand.
"Oh, yes. You and a Timothy Foust?" The man asks as he looks at his book.
"Yes, that's right. This is Tim." Chris says as he takes Tim's hand. Tim smiles and nods a hello to the man.
"I'm Reverend Alda. Will there be anyone standing with you, such as a best man?" Rev. Alda asks.
"For me? My brother, Adam." Chris smiles at his younger brother. "Tim?"
Tim looks around, his eyes meeting the eyes of his cousin.
"Chance? Would you do me the honor?" Tim asks.
"I'd love to." Chance smiles and nods.
Reverend Alda started the ceremony. Chris and Tim stare into each others' eyes.
"Would you like the traditional wedding vows or have you prepared your own?" The reverend asks quietly.
"We really haven't prepared anything." Chris answers.
"I would like to say something. If I could?" Tim asks, looking up at the older man. Rev. Alda smiles and nods.
"Chris, for as long as I can remember, my life has been filled with heartbreak and disappointment. It was like a curse had been put on my life. There was only one thing I wanted and that was to die. I just wanted to end it all. I couldn't even do that right. My attempt at suicide failed. But it was also a blessing. Because at the hospital, I met an angel. One that showed me that life was worth living. He taught me that even someone like me was capable of love. That angel was you. You saved my life. Cause, Lord knows, if you hadn't been there, I would have tried again. I love you so much. And as long as there is breath in this body, I will love you." Tim says as tears stream down his face.
Chris smiles through his tears as he squats down in front of Tim.
"That night, I met a flower. But the flower was wilted. Wilted from neglect. Like any flower, it needed love and attention to survive. While I was nursing that flower back to life, I fell in love with it. I watched that wilted, destined to die flower turn into the most beautiful rose I have ever seen. And today, I promise to love and cherish that beautiful rose until death do us part." Chris says as he wipes the tears from Tim's cheeks.
"Wow, for yall not having anything prepared, you sure knocked it out of the park." Reverend Alda chuckles as he wipes a tear.
"Ain't that the truth." Rob says as he takes off his glasses to wipe his eyes.
"May we have the rings." Rev. Alda says.
Chris turns to a smiling Adam and takes the ring from his hand.
"Repeat after me." Reverend Alda says. "I give you this ring as a symbol of my love and faithfulness. As I place it on your finger, I commit my heart and soul to you."
Chris repeats as he slips the ring onto Tim's finger.
Chance hands Tim the ring and gently squeezes his shoulder.
"Repeat after me, Tim." The preacher says and then repeats the ring vow.
Tim repeats as he slides the ring onto Chris's finger.
Reverend Alda finishes the ceremony:
"Chris and Tim, you have each chosen to be joined in marriage today. The Bible states that 'two are better than one; they receive a good reward for their toil, because, if one fails, the other can help the companion up again.' In my presence and in the presence of your family and friends, you have exchanged vows and made promises. You have opened your hearts to one another, declared your love and friendship, and have united yourself with the exchanging of rings. Therefore, with the blessings of God, it is my pleasure to now pronounce you husband and husband."
"You may now kiss your spouse!"
