Chapter 8

All I was conscious of at that exact moment, was the blinding white light behind my eyes. I couldn't open my eyes, or so it felt like. Feeling slowly came back to my body, excruciatingly slow. I became aware of a sudden sharp pain in the inside of my forearm and a sore feeling all over my body. Then the voices started:

"This should help her wake up a little faster."

"It better. The others have all waken up, except for that one that the others had called Collette, the brunette one. I guess she must've been allergic to the serum or something. Apparently she's as good as dead."

"Well that's too bad, the boss upstairs wanted to speak to all of them. Are you sure we should even be doing this, Robb? It's not their fault, they-"

"Boss's orders, Andrew. Unless you want to go against a direct order from the man who has the power to destroy half of the world with one word, I suggest that you don't question your orders ever again."

I heard one pair of footsteps leave the room, I'm guessing it was the voice that was in charge, the one getting the other one in trouble. I think his name was Robb.

I decide to finally open my eyes and face whatever was behind my unopened eyelids. I open my eyes and the bright lights force me to close them again. I force them open again and I could see clearer than before. I was in a clean white room, with bright lights above my head. I was laying on a hospital type bed, surrounded by machines. I think one of them was a heart monitor. But I wasn't in a hospital, was I?

"Oh, I can see that you've finally decided to wake up." I turn my head towards the voice. It was the same voice that was getting in trouble earlier, for defending us, I think. He was Andrew. He looked like he was in his early 20's or late teens, like he should've been in college. Maybe this boy was an intern or something.

"Where am I?" I ask the most asked and most unanswered question in the history of fiction, but of course this isn't a book and I'm not a damsel in distress.

"You're in a top secret facility that I'd rather not tell you about right now. My name is Andrew, and mind if I ask what your name is?" His head turns towards a corner in the ceiling. If I looked close enough, I could see a little shimmer of light there, maybe a security camera. This might be a test, for him or for me I wasn't sure.

I decided to tell the truth for now, who knows what they already learned from the others, apparently I'm the last one awake, but of course they don't know that I know that, do they. "My name is Payton. Now why am I here still?" I decided to skip to the point.

"I'm not authorized to answer that question for you, but I need you to come with me." He states in a monotone voice. His voice wavered a little at the end, is he scared of me? Why would he be scared? He's bigger and probably faster and stronger than I'll ever be.

"Well," I said, testing my luck, "do you expect me to leave this room in this?" I indicate my hospital like paper gown. " I need a change of clothing before I'm leaving this room, who knows how many pedophiles I'll pass on my way to wherever you want, or need, to take me? Hmm?"

"Don't worry , we thought of that. Your change of clothes are sitting on the chair next to your bed. And there's a bathroom over there too, so you don't have to worry about any privacy issues." I look over and I'm surprised to see a chair with some pristine white clothes on them. I turn back to the boy, Andrew, but he was looking at some clipboard.

I walk in the bathroom and lock the door, I need to find a way out. I checked every inch of that room, but everything was either nailed down, or too light and soft to be a weapon. Accepting defeat for the time being, I get dressed. I was wearing a crisp white tank top, made of soft silk. The pants were actually stretchy jeans, or a material just like it. They were white too. They'd given me a white cardigan, and I also put that on, who knew how cold it was inside this facility. They gave me what looked like white Toms to me, but I wasn't very sure. I combed out my hair with my fingers until it actually looked nice. Who knew where I was going?

I finally step out of the safety of the small restroom. Andrew silently walked out of the room, motioning me to follow him. I walk out behind him and we enter a blank white hallway. Everything in this place seems to be some shade of white. The only shred of color that I can see is the eye and hair color of  me and Andrew, although his hair was more of a snowy blond, so it can't really count.

We pass plain white doors with no markings on them whatsoever. I could never make it back to my room even if I wanted to now. I don't even know how anyone could even find one certain room in this place, they all looked the same. Finally there is some diversity between the rooms when we turn a corner. The doors are farther apart and some have plaques on them.

We enter a room labeled: interrogation. Oh great, just what I needed right now. He sits me down in the small chair facing the mirror glass, but I've watched enough crime shows to know that the glass is not a mirror, but a one way glass. The people on the other side could see me, but I couldn't see them. I wondered now how many people were on the other side of the glass now, ten, maybe twenty.

I'm interrupted in my thoughts by the door opening. A man walks in, someone very familiar, although I couldn't place it now. And then it hits me. All the months that I tried to forget his face, all the months trying to go back to a normal life. It was him.

"How'd you find me here?"
