Chapter 7

The sun was high in the sky and the birds singing in the trees. It would have been my favorite kind of day back at home, the kind of day where nothing can go wrong. I look to my right and see Lauren and Kasta sitting by the water, playing in the sand. Collette was still back at the camp, she was probably trying to boil more water, we needed all the fresh water we could get.

"Catch!" I hear Julian yell at Patrick. They were on the other side of the beach, my left, throwing coconuts at each other, while running in circles. I wondered then if this had never happened, would any of us ever had become friends? I mean, now were stuck on an island together, so we're pretty much screwed if we don't get along, look at what happened to Amy.

"So how's the basking in the glory of the sun working out for you. You know, if you really want to tan you should lay in a better patch of sun." Brandon had sat down next to me, interrupting my thought process.

"As a matter of fact I was not trying to sun tan, I was just thinking. We are lost in the great unknown and you think I care about how I look?"

He turns to face me, "As a matter of fact I thought you might of been jealous of my golden skin, wanted to get yourself  something like it."

"Sure, that's what my lifelong dream has become, to have a perfect tan." I laugh a little and we both stare of into space for a while.

"So what you're saying is, you think my tan is perfect?" He smirks at me and I literally roll over on the rocks in frustration. He starts to laugh and I just lay there, now on my stomach.

I look up and I see the mountain that's in the middle of our island. It's a pretty mountain, I wonder how far away from here it was to get there, a mile or two?

"You know what I can't seem to shake off?" Brandon asks, I knew he wasn't going to pause for me so I didn't answer. "That feeling that something happened out there in that jungle, something big. It's like there's a hole in my memory."

"Yeah, me too."

"Do you think we should get the others to go in there with us next time. Maybe we could make it like a little exposition. We could hike all the way to the mountain and back, give us a little appreciation of our surroundings."

"Maybe, but would the others go?"

"Yeah your right, but can we at least try? I mean, if we think rescue's going to come for us, it should of come by now, and besides, maybe there is something out there that could help us get off this god forsaken island."

"Maybe, just maybe."

"Alright guys, everyone have enough water? This is going to be a full day trip, so bring all the water you think you'll need, and then some. If you're hungry, we'll probably pass a banana tree or two on our way. Everyone ready?" Collette asked us for the hundredths time it seemed. We were going to hike around the island, just like Brandon suggested we should.

As everyone nodded we set out for the jungle again. Me and Brandon led the because we were the only ones that had been out here before. Collette was right behind us, trying to memorize the path we used. She was kind of like our unelected leader, she was the oldest and the one who was the most responsible out of us.

As we hiked, many of us made small talk, while I on the other hand just listened. Julian and Patrick were talking about their favorite video games and if they'd ever get to play them again. Brandon and Kasta we having some sort of debate with Collette about politics, which made no sense to me. Lauren was just walking next to me, bored out of her mind.

"Do you think we'll ever see civilization again?" Lauren asked me.

I looked at her and she said. "C'mon I'm being serious."

"Maybe."

"Just think about all the things we used to take for granted. They all seem silly now, how we wanted them so badly and we never stopped to think if we really needed them." She says, deep in her own thought.

"What about phones?

"Oh. I would kill for reception out here! Oh, and wifi! How I miss wifi so much."

"And pizza, ice cream, soda." We look at each other and start laughing our butts off, maybe we were going a little bit crazy too.

"What's all this laughing about ladies?" Julian comes to my right.

"We would like to come in on the fun." Patrick comes to Laurens left, we were now completely surrounded by these two idiots, oh god.

"We were talking about which one of you we should we eat when we convert to cannibalism." She turns to me, " I still think Patrick might be too stringy"

"Yeah, Julian might not be that tasty though." I say, playing along with her. Both Patrick and Julian look at us with horror on their faces. We burst out laughing at them and they look offended at us.

"I bet I'm tastier than Patrick" Julian finally says.

"Hey! Well I bet that I probably have more meat on me." We leave them as they start to argue about who would be a better first sacrifice. Boys are all such idiots.

"Wait!" I stopped us, we were almost at the mountain by now and the sun was high above our heads, shining through the trees, but something was off.

"Do you here that?" Patrick asked us. And he was right. The birds had stopped singing, it was deadly quiet, too quiet. The hole trek through the jungle there was signs of life and bugs everywhere, but here there was nothing except some plants.

"Does it sound a little too quiet to you?" Kasta inquires as we all stand completely still.

"You just read my thoughts" I say. We all stand there until we hear this high pitched zooming sound, and then Brandon drops to the ground. I was the closest so I got there within seconds, enough time for Collette to also drop to the ground. I check his pulse, but I noticed some sort of dart arrow on his neck. He was still breathing, but knocked out cold.

"Everyone take cover, we're being attacked!" I yell at everyone as I start to see more darts fly around, they seemed to be coming from everywhere. I hear one last zoom sound and I feel something prick my neck.

I try and keep my eyes open, but they closed against my will. My last conscious thought was:

We're not alone on this island anymore
