Chapter 5

The last few days we have spent here have been uneventful. We had basically just spent each day gathering reusable things from the plane wreckage, and building a makeshift tree house near the edge of the lush jungle that covers the middle of the island. We were able to agree on the fact that we needed somewhere other than the beach to sleep. The tree house wasn't as hard to build as it sounds, it only took our combined workload, excluding Amy who still refused to work much, to build it in under three days.

It's now been four days since the crash, making today May 5th. We haven't seen anyone else since the day we left for Australia.

We've been able to grab enough food from the crash to feed us, but it's running out. We probably won't have food by tomorrow evening. None of us have ventured far into the jungle, in fact, the farthest any of us had gotten is a couple of feet past our makeshift tree house. But we will need to go in there soon, we need to find food.

Right now I'm sitting under the tree house, trying to escape the heat. It wasn't even summer yet, but somehow this place managed to be extremely hot. Everyone else was either in the house, or trying to cool off by swimming in the waters closer to the shore, so they wouldn't get lost either.

We planned to have a meeting tonight under the tree house about how we were going to organize ourselves, and what duties we will be assigned to do. I have a feeling that we will end up electing a leader too.

I'm interrupted from my thoughts by a small rock hitting my face. I look up and see Patrick and Julian running away from me laughing, who's to say we can't have fun while we are here? I take off my shoes and run after them.

I catch them quickly and we fall to the ground panting. We haven't run far from our little base camp, but the heat is taking its toll on our bodies.

Patrick and Julian have developed a strong friendship since they got in this situation, I'm not surprised though. Most of us have gotten along more than we would have ever if we hadn't been stuck in this situation, well that's all of us except for Amy.

"Oh, that was fun. Let's start heading back now." I tell them as we get off of the ground and brush ourselves off.

We were walking back along some rocks by the shore when Julian sees them, "Hey look! Over there! " He yells running towards a little bay of water surrounded by rocks on all sides. When me and Patrick reach him, he is leaning over it. It seemed like he was studying it.

"What was that for, man!" Patrick asks, still panting from the heat.

I look a little closer at the water and realized that there was something moving in there. What? I looked closer and realized that I saw clams, or was it oysters? Oh, who cares, its food!

"Are they edible?", I ask Julian who was still studying the food.

"Yep, and we can take them back to the camp and cook them over the fire tonight." He says, genuinely happy and hopeful for once. Patrick finally realizes that the rocks in the water are food and his expression turns happy too.

Julian and Patrick volunteered to take their shirts off, so they could carry some of the, oysters I've decided, back to our house. I took mine off too, thank god I was wearing and undershirt too, and got some for me to carry.

When we got back to base, everyone had already gathered in the house. We made a fire and told everyone to come down the tree, it was time for dinner.

We were able to cook the oysters in an old coconut shell that we found with some salt water in it. The meal wasn't that bad if I do say so myself. But you could feel the tension in the room as we started to discuss our plan.

"So do we all agree that Collette will be our leader and organizer?"Lauren asks the circle. We all silently agreed to have Collette lead us, anyway she was the oldest.

"Well, it is obvious that we need some more rations, the food that Payton, Julian, and Patrick were able to find only adds a day or two to our food supply, we need to go out into the jungle and find some food. Does anyone want to volunteer?" she finishes looking around the room.

"Don't you guys look at me, I'm not doing nothing until recue gets here." Amy tells us all with her most snobbiest voice she could muster. That was the last straw, I can't take it anymore.

"You know what Amy? You haven't done anything sense we got here, you just sit around on the rocks, waiting for a recue that isn't ever going to show up! You are just wasting whatever little recourses that we even have left! You used up most of our water yesterday, because you said you felt dirty, well to bad, we all do!" I yell in her face.

"What's a little less water going to do? We have a whole ocean surrounding us for petes sake!" she yells back at me. Was she really that stupid.

"Amy, that's salt water! Do you think we are only drinking from whatever left of our water bottles from the plane because we like the taste? No, it's because salt water will make you even thirstier! Don't you know anything?!" I yell at her again, getting even more frustrated.

"Guys!" Brandon yells at us, "Fighting isn't going to get us anywhere, I'll volunteer to find food tomorrow morning, and Amy she does have a point you know."

Amy looks at each of us in turn, knowing that we all silently agreed with him. "Fine, if that's how you want it. I'm done with you guys, I can make it on my own!" she yells and storms into the jungle. She might be very stubborn and stupid, but it takes guts to go in there alone.

Once she was a couple of minutes in to there, we all faced each other, "I'll go tomorrow too, let's just hope that she doesn't get lost in there." I say, trying to believe what just happened. Amy just left us to go into a jungle full of  insects and animals that we might of never heard of. She has probably never even left the comforts of a city life, and yet she went in there alone.

I still don't know why none of us went after her. Maybe because we knew we would be better off without her, but that isn't it.

We were just scared of what was in there.
