*CLANG*

*BOOOOOMMM*

I shot up, waking from a very restless sleep, my head and back screaming in protest. It felt like I ran two marathons and got the crap beaten out of me. Groaning, I tried to feel my head, but a sharp cold stopped me. I froze, my hands scrambling to find out what the heck was on my head.

Rusted, cold, very heavy like an extra ten pounds added to my neck. The contraption was latched to my head tightly, so there was no chance of just slipping it off. Trying just led to a bigger headache that was already made worse by that incessant clanking in the distance.

Shaking and already breaking out in a cold sweat, my eyes focused enough in the darkness to see the absolute mess and grim I was lying in. The room was medium sized, almost as big as a living room, just without all the pleasantries. Instead metal tables littered in the room along with old towels and scrap pieces of metal with plenty of old file cabinets and a new freezer that really seemed out of place. The walls were smeared with rust and maybe mold, but my stomach turned making me stop thinking about that. Disgusting.

Why am I here..? Is this hell?

Struggling to stand, my eyes landed on a very old tape recorder with a small piece of paper with my name written on it. It had speckles of some red liquid. I could only pray it wasn't what I thought it was.

Slowly picking up the recorder whilst leaning heavily on the table, I pressed play only to be met with the most disturbing, ear jarring voice I've heard.

"Hello Gray. I want to play a game."

A game? Wait why the hell did they know my name?

"For your whole life you've relied on others to get you through life, never earning your independence. Today, that is going to change."

My breath caught in my throat. Excuse me?

"Before you are the tools to your freedom. In the freezer are five bodies. Inside each is a piece of a key that will allow you to remove the contraption on your head. However, there are more than one key in the bodies. The others unlock your friends traps below you. The book will guide your way. Let the games begin." The tape ended and I was left mortified.

———————————————————————

I had dragged one of the bodies to a table, trying to straighten out their twisted and mutilated limbs, and situated the manual to the side. They were a bit older, probably around thirty. Their skin was pale, in some places yellow, and the brown hair on their head was falling out. Makes me wonder who this person was. On a tray next to their head were rusty old power tools, a couple screwdrivers and pliers.

This was sick. Messed up in every sense. To carve into a random corpse was...unmoral sure. They were already dead right? Even if this was technically desecrating body, it was for my survival...

Hah, trying to justify myself won't help.

Without going into too much gruesome detail, I managed to find the key piece with my shaky hands and terrible eyesight. Like finding a slightly bigger needle in a slightly smaller haystack.

I would've celebrated if it wasn't for the guilt crushing my shoulders and the blood covering my hands.

Whatever. Maybe that was this persons game. Make me hesitate long enough to get my skull crushed or whatever this thing did. Gain my independence my butt.

Too bad for them, I've already seen Nat do multiple autopsies on animal and humans alike. Yes I would hesitate because of my moral compass but besides that... I have no qualms with opening up a body.

When I finished stitching up the very sloppy incisions, I read the rest of the instructions. There was a laundry elevator just to the right of me. When I opened the rusty door I was met with a cloud of dust and a crowd of flies. Chiking on the stale air I looked inside the dark compartment, completely void of light.

"Hello?" A husky voice echoed off the hollowed out walls. There was light at the bottom of the chute.

"Nat!" I yelled, recognizing that idiots voice.

"Gray, is that you making all that f**king noise?!"

"Nat...I'm cutting up bodies to get a stupid key to get a skull crusher off my head and you want to spend your time complaining about the noise?! The NOISE??"

"Never mind, get your a** down here with those bodies and tools. Or don't and get us killed."

"Oh sure, throw myself down an elevator and break my bones, sounds like fun."

"I'll catch you, now hurry up."

———————————————————————-

I threw the bodies and tools down then myself, waiting to break my butt till Nat delivered on his promise and caught me, not without bashing my head against a wall.

"I've gathered we're somewhere in downtown, I have a window that opens up to the east side and the suns gone down. Sure took your sweet time getting your part done. Not even done, just one part huh?" I rolled my eyes, rubbing my head as I sat on the much cleaner floor.

Nat got a lab, LED lights littering the ceiling while sciency and medical stuff was scattered the tables and floor. Whatever his task was, it looked like they finished and was just waiting for me.

"Excuse me glow stick. I woke up in a garbage pit with five dead bodies and an old screwdriver to dig out five stupid key pieces in their bloodstream. Sorry for not going faster to your liking."

"...you did fine. Close your eyes."

"Don't baby me." Nat shrugged and cut an artery, blood spewing out onto them and the floor. He caught something in his hand before the blood stopped.

"The pieces will be easy enough to get. Avoiding whoever put us here and their game will be slightly harder."

"Game...it's more of a murder trap."

"That too. Some people can't see the difference." I sighed.

"We can make it out. Just depends on if they play nice and fair. But I doubt they will since we broke the rules. Here." He tossed me a key, bloodstained but put together. I felt around and got the thing off my head. Throwing it to the ground I stretched my neck and face muscles. Nat was getting his contraption off, which looked like two knifes poised to drive into the back of his neck and back.

"Now what?"

"We find mother and get her to stop making that g**d**m noISE!!" He want off and marched to a pair of double doors, presumably unlocking with the third key in the bodies. I walked over to the bodies Nat had piled up on one of the tables in the lab. I paused then sighed, arranging them in a line then covering them with a tarp that was in the corner.

"They're already dead and decomposing." Nat said from the doorway, leaning on it like a disappointed parent. Well, a disappointed parent covered in blood and probably some disease.

"...but they were people. I don't know their stories but hey, give them a little bit of dignity."

"Suuuuure. C'mon, we need to move."

"You're not the boss of me."

"Keep telling yourself that." I stuck my tongue out at him and followed close, not looking forward to the night ahead.
