Day 6: Calm Before the Storm
I sat in the sand with waves gently caressing my bare feet. Saden stood at attention beside me, as if she was a sentry on duty. No matter how close I was to Saden, it was still difficult to see her clearly. From what I could see, she was tall and seemed to be wearing broken black and cream armor with purple "veins" running throughout it. Her hair was incredibly long, but was held back as a loose braid. The cream locks fell over her face as she gazed at the sea. Her face was the hardest to see for me, but her bold purple eyes could be seen, shining from the darkness around her face. They were always aware of the area around her, and never lingered in one spot too long.
"Stop staring at me." Saden stated calmly, having never even looked at me.
I turned my head away and muttered, "How do you do that?"
"How do I do what exactly?" she answered my question with one of her own.
"How do you notice all these different things? How do you KNOW all these different things? Are you some kind of all seeing angel?" I ask, quickly going from one to the next.
"I am an observer. I have always stood and watched others like you and like the ones around you. I have learned to notice things that most people would not. Such as, I knew from the start that Zexion was from your memories, and that Xion was referring to your yellowed eye when you were confused." Saden told me with an unnerving amount of serenity.
I looked up at her and asked, "Did you know how my eye became yellow like that?"
She didn't respond.
"Saden?"
Silence.
"Do you?!" I was getting frustrated.
"Close your mouth and listen!" she exclaimed with a harsh tone. I, out of shock to her outburst, complied.
She looked around for a few moments before jumping in front of me and getting hit by some unseen force. Saden flew over my head and landed on her back. The area around me changed. No longer was there the soft sand or gentle waves, but empty space surrounding me. A wall of black seemed to divide the place in half. From the darkness, I saw two sickly yellow eyes shine. I stepped back, afraid.
"Do not be scared..." a sinister voice said from the darkness.
"W-who is that?!" I ask, terrified.
"I am In'ei....A part of you, Kisa." the voice replies with a chuckle.
"STAY BACK YOU DEMON!" Saden yelled while pulling me back, I hadn't even noticed that I was walking towards the voice.
Saden pulls out what looks like a giant sword, but with two key blades shaped in an 'X' near the end she holds onto. It was a powerful looking weapon, yet it looked fractured.
In'ei laughs, "You know you can't use that properly! It's broken!"
"Kisa. Wake up, now! She can't follow you into consciousness." Saden commanded me.
"Wh-what?! What's even going on Saden?!" I screamed the questions in my mind.
"Just.....wake.....UP!" she yelled with the magnitude for me to hear it outside my dream.
I woke up and instantly sat up in my bed. Tears covered my face as I attempted to catch my breath.
"S-saden?" I whispered aloud.
No response.
"Wh-what even was that?" I continued speaking softly to myself. I couldn't go back to sleep....not after that.....I looked at a small clock in my room. It was four in the morning.... I sighed and got up from my bed. I quietly crept through the halls of the castle. My feet carried me to what I hoped was the right door. Slowly turning the door handle, I entered Ienzo's room.
"I-ienzo?" I whispered in his ear once I get to his bed.
He groaned tiredly, "Kisa?"
"Y-ya...."
"What are you doing awake? You need sleep for our missions."
"I-I.....this'll sound childish but.....I had a nightmare. Can I stay here with you?"
Ienzo looked up at me and saw my tears. My eyes stared at the ground sadly. He shifted to the other side of the bed so there would be room. I barely noticed his nose twitch and his face looked confused before returning to a relaxed face.
"It's not childish to have nightmares. Now come here. We need rest." he spoke gently.
I smiled softly and laid on the bed next to him. The covers were pulled over me by Ienzo as I laid on the bed. I laid on my side facing away from Ienzo when I suddenly felt a gentle hand wrap around my shoulders. I stayed completely still as Ienzo softly hugged me in his sleep, his even breathing informing me that he was unconscious. The warmth and comfort of his arms lulled me back to sleep. I didn't have another nightmare.
Gentle nudging on my shoulder gradually pulled me out of slumber. My eyes only half-opened. Everything around me was a blur as I sluggishly awoke. I yawned after discovering Ienzo to be the one who was prodding me out of bed.
"Five more minutes....." I muttered sleepily before rolling over.
"Really Kisa? It's time to wake up. We have a mission." Ienzo sighed with a small amount of humor in his voice. He shook me slightly.
"Noooooo." I whined drowsily while pushing his hands away.
"Kisa!" he chuckled.
"I don't wannaaaaaaa." I continued childishly. Ienzo laughed while benignly grabbing my hands and lifting my arms in the air to gently pull me into a sitting position.
"It's time to wake up, Kisa." he whispered tenderly before lightly touching the side of my face. I blushed brightly as my eyes completely opened.
"F-fine!" I pouted while crossing my arms.
"Come on." Ienzo smiled while standing. He looked already completely ready, whereas I was still in bed. I stood up as well.
"What time is it?" I asked Ienzo while stretching.
"About a quarter past seven in the morning. We have an hour and forty-five minutes till we're required to be on our mission." He responded.
"Good. That's more than enough time to get ready." I said while walking towards the bathrooms.
I grabbed a fresh cloak and take a quick shower. Ienzo said he'd be in the castle library for a few minutes and would meet me in the Grey Area. Now fully dressed, I began to fix my hair. I looked into the mirror and noticed something. Around my left eye there seemed to be small black lines, like veins, coming out the sides of my yellow eye. I started to shriek, but my hands flew to my mouth to stifle the noise. I rapidly styled my hair to cover my eye. Though, I find it strange that my left I was effected when I already styled my hair to cover my left eye. I supposed it's just a lucky coincidence.
I finished getting ready and walked towards the Grey Area.
"It doesn't make sense!" I heard a familiar voice say angrily from a room nearby. I followed the sound and found the open door to a small room with a large multi-screen computer taking all of the far wall. Ienzo was typing furiously on it and suddenly slammed him fists down.
"Why would they-!" he yelled while angrily inputing a different set of letters.
"What doesn't make sense?" I asked confused, walking up behind him and placing my hand on his shoulder. Ienzo jumped and whirled around.
"Kisa! Y-you scared me!" he nervously stuttered while 'discreetly' trying to cover the screen he was working on.
"What is it Ienzo? Is something wrong?" I asked, feeling genuinely concerned. I try to look at the screen. Inezo's hand quickly closes whatever he was looking at so I would be unable to look.
"Don't worry about it..." he sighed, knowing I had caught onto him, but still he refused to inform me of what the problem is.
I sighed in defeat and begged, "Just promise that if something is wrong you'll tell me. ok?"
"I will." he said, I looked into his eyes. His eyes stared boldly into my eyes, but with nervousness apparent as he slightly bit his lip. He was lying, but I smiled anyway.
"Thank you." I replied, hoping my lie wasn't as obvious as his.
"We have another mission together today right?" I asked, changing the subject.
"Actually no, not today. Siax feels to need for you to go with someone else today." he sighed, clearly as disappointed as I was that we weren't doing a mission together.
We both walked down to the Grey Area in silence. Ienzo seemed so bothered by something, but he refused to tell me. Every time I tried to ask what was on his mind, he'd reply with a fake smile with a short 'nothing'. Does he honestly think he's fooling me?
The Grey Area was nearly empty as people continued to leave for their missions. I approached Siax carefully, knowing from being told that he could be grumpy in the mornings, and I didn't want to incur his wrath.
"You two are late. Xakis, you partner for today's mission is already on the field. Go join him." Siax growled disdainfully at as. I silently nodded and opened a dark corridor to Twilight Town.
I stepped out of the portal into the sun, holding the objective card. I read it silently to myself. I was nervous to be working with another member of the Organization, and the memories of the nightmare this morning still plagued my mind. Saden had yet to speak to me again, so I feared the worst of...whatever it was that attacked.
Being too far lost in thought, I didn't notice someone directly in front of me, and I ran into a taller man that wore the Organization cloak. I quickly looked up to see a full head of spiky red hair. Instantly, I put a name to the face.
"O-oh! Sorry Axel!" I stuttered while stepping back.
He chuckled, "It's fine Xakis. You need to pay more attention to your surrounding though. You could get hurt."
"Yeah, r-right. I'll be more careful." I muttered in embarrassment.
"Time for work then I guess. We're here to collect hearts, and I'm afraid that job falls mostly on you, since you have the keyblade." Axel stated with a shrug.
"Collecting hearts? But how do they know that-! I-I mean.... Wait, how do YOU know I have a keyblade?" I asked, my mind blurring with questions. Axel's eyebrows raised for a moment from realization to what I said, but his expression quickly returned to the relaxed and neutral smile.
"I figured since they sent us on a collection mission and I certainly don't have a keyblade." the redhead said to cover for the slip of his tongue.
I sighed, "Well then lets get started."
My right hand stretched out away from me, and I tried to recreate the feeling I had yesterday so that I could summon my weapon. A small flash of light surrounded my hand and I was holding my keyblade yet again. The contrasting black and white swirls on the blade seemed even more apparent than they had yesterday.
Axel looked shocked, but only for a moment before he turned away.
"Lets go." is all that he said as we truly began our mission.
The mission went fairly smoothly. I was still unpracticed with my weapon, but I was able to hold my ground. Axel proofed to be helpful on the battlefield, often setting far off Heartless aflame. It wasn't long until we had exceeded our quota.
"That was easy." Axel said as he dismissed his chakram.
"I agree. Should we had back now? We'll need to report to Siax." I started to say while preparing to open a portal. Axel gently grabbed my arm to stop me.
"Straight back to the castle already? Why don't we take a stop first?" he said before starting to walk in a different direction.
"Stop? What do you mean? What are we gonna do?" I asked, trying to figure out what he meant.
"You worked really hard today and got done quick, so you deserve a little something extra." Axel stated, still walking.
"A little something extra?" I called after him.
He stopped and smiled to himself before calling back, "Yeah, the icing on the cake."
Confused, I followed him. He stopped by a local store before leading me to the clock tower in the center of the city.
After climbing a large amount of stairs, we reached the top that overlooked the whole town. I gasped in awe as I saw the sunset paint the whole world in shades of orange and red. Axel chuckled before sitting on the edge of the clocktower. I sat on his right side, careful not to fall.
"Here you go. The icing on the cake." Axel said as he pulled out his purchase from the shop, revealing two light blue ice creams. I took one gently, and Axel instantly took a bite of his.
"I'd hate to be the one to tell you this, Axel, but this isn't cake." I said sarcastically.
Axel laughed as he looked at me amused. "I know it isn't cake! But thanks for the reminder, know-it-all!"
We both laughed for a moment. There was a point in which Roxas joined us to eat his own ice cream, and conversation continued between the three of us for a few hours as we watched the sunset. Eventually, we all needed to return to the castle. We all walked through the pathways through the dark corridors back towards the castle. Axel and Roxas primarily spoke to each other as I followed and listened, laughing at some of their conversations. We got back to the castle and went separate ways.
Once I entered my room, a familiar voice called out in my head, "Kisa?"
"Saden!" I cried from relief. I closed my door and closed my eyes, focusing on Saden's voice.
"Are you ok? You sound exhausted! What happened this morning?" the questions fell from my mouth with drops of worry and concern.
"Do not worry for my wellbeing. I cannot technically die, so there is no reason in fretting over that. As for your secondary question, it seems your darkness has manifested itself into its own being. I have not a clue how that was possible. The darkness has never done this before. I fear that this is a result of how you came to your current position." Saden began to speak to me, though it seemed at the end, she was talking more to herself.
"Manifested into its own being? What does that even mean?" I asked, completely confused.
"Do you remember how you became a Nobody?" Saden solemnly asked.
"Yes, but I don't understand why that matters."
"Kisa, you aren't a true Nobody. Nobodies, as I am sure you are aware, lack hearts. You are in exception to this. When you were attacked as a child, the Heartless were only able to steal half your heart. The other half of your heart returned to you almost instantly, but because it did, the darkness that would've manifested into your Heartless, seemed to separated from you. That darkness, because of how bright your heart was, should have become an incredibly powerful Heartless. Yet, it seems that your Heartless found you."
I was in shock. This was a lot of information to take in at first, but I managed out, "So that dark wall and yellow eyes were...."
"Your Heartless, she attacked you in the mission yesterday. She must have reunited your bodies and powers. Such an action will make you stronger, but, as is evident from this morning, it allows your Heartless to interfere with your dreams. If she were to get stronger she could follow you into your consciousness." Saden's speech continued.
"What would happen if she did?" I fearfully asked.
"She would be in a similar position as I. I can speak to you, and I can share my powers with you." Saden said carefully, as if trying to insure that her word choice was perfect.
"So In'ei, as she called herself, will be just like you, but dark?" I questioned her.
"Essentially..." she trailed off.
I shook nervously. The thought of a Heartless speaking to me was absolutely horrifying. I tried desperately to fit this new information in my mind. It was difficult to process, but I came to term with it the best I could for now. I took out my journal and quickly wrote how today's mission went including the afternoon spent with Axel and Roxas. Once finished, I closed my journal and put it away before laying on my bed.
My thoughts wondered to Ienzo this morning. It is clear to me that he's hiding some important for reasons I don't understand. Why couldn't he just tell me? He hadn't even spoken to me much afterwards, but what could be so secretive that he felt the need to withhold the information from me? I couldn't imagine.
Inevitably, I fell asleep my mind filled with worry and sadness.
