Introduction

July 15, 1946

It was a hot summer day in Pearl Harbor, as it was mid July. It has been almost a year since a disastrous war had ended, one that changed the world forever. Anyhow now to some things about me, I'm part of this squadron that involves very young pilots, and when I mean young I mean like 7-8th grade, 12 and 13 year olds. I'm Cy, I'm a 13 year old pilot of a Lockheed P-38j Lightning. There are also other people my age that I talk to but we shall get to that later.

Today was one of those casual days on the coast of Hawaii for everyone, except for me, I was finally getting to take the P-38 for a combat training flight and I could not wait to fire those guns! My commander, Lieutenant Martin L. Snyder, said he would be flying along with me in his F6F-5 Hellcat, oh what a beautiful machine! I inspected my plane before taking it out of its hanger, making sure it looked good around its landing gear, engines, and control surfaces. After inspection the ground crewmen pushed the fork tailed devil out of its hanger to the side of the runway. Next, one of the crewmen helped me up on the wing, I walked across the wing and approached the cockpit. Now the P-38's canopy is opened in a unique way, first you loosen the latches holding the ceiling down and prop it up. Next, you literally roll down the side of the cockpit as you would in a car. And last but definitely not least, you jump in the seat. (But don't literally jump in the seat because it's made of metal). After that I did the process in reverse and closed the canopy. In the cockpit I flicked on the electrical power switch (which powers on the battery). As soon as I did, a voice crackled over the radio, it was lieutenant Martin. "Wait until I take off," he said,"then it will be your turn." "Roger that!" I replied. I watched Martin's Hellcat takeoff, 'he made it look so easy,' I thought to myself. He soon got his Hellcat off the runway and the hellcat's engine roared as it spun the propeller pulling the plane into the air. I waited until I saw Martin's plane's landing gear retract before starting my engines. I flicked  two switches each starting the feul pump in both engines, I decided to start the left engine first so I pushed a lever forward until it hit the border of its slot and held it there, I watched until the left propeller started spinning fast and let go of the lever, making it slide back to the middle of its slot. I did the same thing for the right engine. I listened to the fierce, but beautiful roar of the 2 engines. Finally, it's time for takeoff!

*End*

Well, it's almost time for take off, I'm still trying to think of what happens after takeoff. But I wanted to post this part to see what everyone thinks, Hope you enjoyed!
