Combat Training

All right here's the case, this is part 2 of chapter one (Introduction). I came up with what happens after takeoff, so sit back and enjoy!

Cy's POV

I watched the fuel pressure gauge closely to make sure that fuel was flowing into the engines. Luckily the needle in the gauge was showing that there was fuel pressure. I picked up the flight manual from a small pouch next to my seat and flipped the pages to a page titled "Takeoff procedures," and read it. Following the first step, I reached for a lever that stuck out behind the box looking thing that the throttle controls were in and held the lever in the down position. This made the flaps in the plane push out from the wings. I waited until the flaps were about halfway out before putting the lever back in the middle of its slot, making the flaps stop where they were. Step read that I needed to make sure all my control surfaces worked. I grabbed my control yoke and turned the "half a steering wheel" on top of the stick right and left controlling the ailerons. I looked at both wing tips to see the ailerons moving up and down. "Ok the ailerons work," I said. Next I checked the rudder controls by moving the petals under the instrument panel with my feet. I looked behind me and saw two rudder flaps turning left and right. The rudders work. Now I had to test the elevator controls, I pulled the control yoke back and forth while looking across my shoulder, seeing the elevator flap moving up and down like it should. "Alright, I'm ready!" I said. Putting the flight manual back in the pouch I pushed the two throttle sticks forward to 100% making the plane start moving, quickly accelerating to 80mph, then 90, and finally 100 (takeoff speed). I pulled the control yoke towards me, making the plane pitch up off the ground lifting slowly into the air. The plane quickly went over 120mph, so I retracted the flaps and held down a button making the landing gear retract back in to the plane. I officially took off! I eventually caught up with Lieutenant Martin and flew up next to his plane, his voice crackled over the radio, "alright, do you remember how to control your plane in the air like I taught you how to last training session?" Martin asked. "Yes!" I replied, "I remember." "Good, now today for training, you will learn how to aim and fire your guns on training balloons set up all around the base." Martin said. "These balloons will act as enemy targets that you have to shoot down." Martin then started explaining how to maneuver my plane in combat, "you have to take sharp turns so this will require pulling G's," he explained,"to get a moving target off your tail, pull up and do either a loop, or half a loop and use your rudder to turn you in another direction to get out of the loop." He also explained other techniques like barrel rolls and the split S, there were quite a few. He finally got to the topic of been waiting for, firing the guns! Martin began to explain,"first things first, your plane in particular has 4 50 caliber guns, as well as a single 20mm cannon, to fire the 50 calibers only, you twist a knob on your control yoke to a label that says "50 caliber", then you hold down a button on the back of the hand grip on your control yoke." He explained, " for the 20mm only, you twist the knob to "20mm", and then hold down a button on the front of the hand grip to fire, the knob right should be pointing to "all", which means you can fire all of the guns at one time." He said. "Alright, got it." I replied,"what's next?" I asked. Martin replied,"now you fly over there and shoot those balloons, I will be watching a little ways away just incase something happens." "Roger that!" I replied. 'This is going to be awesome.' I thought. I maneuvered my plane towards the balloons watching the first one coming closer and closer. I looked in my gunsight and lined up the balloon with the dot in the middle of the sight, then fired. They were so loud!! It was awesome! The balloon blew up in flames and its remains fell towards the Earth below. "I am so doing that again!" I said, " hey there's the next one!" I did the same thing for the second ballon, the third, the fourth, and then the last one. I sat up to look down and saw 5 balls of flames where the balloons landed as Martin and I flew away. "Great work Cy, your a natural!" Said Martin. I thanked him and told him how awesome it was. "It is pretty fun for the first time."

Now it was time to land, I had done this before so I was pretty confident. I held down a button, dropping the landing gear, then I put the flaps all the way out to slow the plane. Pulling the two throttle sticks to 30%, I line up the plane with the runway while the descended lower and lower to the runway. From my view, it looked like it was going to be a perfect landing, only what I didn't know is the left gear leg never dropped down, so yeah it wasn't going pretty landing from the outside, to make matters worse everyone was watching my landing attempt. I didn't notice my plane was leaning left at first, but it slowed down too much leaned on its left side, jerking the plane left, the propeller blades on the left engine were bent back as the plane slid down the runway with parts and body armour being scraped off by the concrete. Luckily the plane came to a stop and I had no injuries that I could feel, but I was so scared I opened the canopy as fast as possible and got out of there!

Martin's POV

I watched as Cy's P-38 lowered towards the runway. I was going to contact him to congratulate him, until I saw that his left gear leg was not present, Cy didn't seem to know it either. "Oh no," I said, "I better tell him" I reached for my radio, only it was too late. I had to watch the lethal P-38 hit the ground and jerk left while the concrete shredded the plane up. It was some relief to me when I saw Cy open his canopy and hop out and run from the wrecked plane. But the crash looked pretty bad. I got my Hellcat on the ground safely and observed the wreckage. "Well nothing is on fire that I can see," I told myself, "it was probably a system failure."

*Sometime Later*

Cy's POV

In the hanger, my buddy Titus asked me what happened, "I don't know, maybe a system failure." I replied. "Well at least you passed the gun firing part." Said Titus.

*End*

Well guys there you have it, chapter 4 of the story,. Also, what do you want to happen next? Tell me on my messages and I will try to write it! Anyways, I hope you enjoyed, chapter 5 will have its engines running soon. Peace
