thomas and his friends are just human orphans in gotham city, Percy always gets the mail from the mailbox, James, Edward, and Gordon all are older teens who help get money by doing jobs, Diesel 10 is an older teen who used to be from a gang, but came to the orphanage, hes got a meta gene that turns him into dark metal and morph it, he makes claw like motions to scare children, but he's actually quite protective of the orphanage due to the fact the kids look up to him and don't seem all that scared of him.

Thomas himself is actually magic, Lady is his mother, who is being hunted by chaos lords, so she left Thomas at the orphanage, he has the gold dust type magic(which makes a sound akin to a train whistle, like Mr. Conductors magic whistle).

Sir toppham hatt is very protective of all the children in his care, Annie and Claribel are caretaker. They are like Alfred,, with the fact that they are former agents, and they are monitoring Thomas due to his unknown nature. But this doesn't mean they don't care about the children. Thomas compares themselves to trains to coupe, with how kids return to the orphanage. hes also really good at drawing, his first drawing being of Lady(human, real name Elizabeth, she wears Victorian royal dress)

Sir Topham know who batman is, and has realized that his wards are brought into his escapades, and greatly dislikes him, so when Batman comes and investigates Thomas, Topham is outraged and demands him out as he will not allow him to pull any of the children in his care into the life and death nonsense that is the super hero life.

Thomas has met some of the villains and even former heroes of Gotham, such as Harley, Ivy, Mr. Freeze, and Wildcat. And has effectively made friends with them, it even changes the way they think, that young child sees faith in them and encourages them, to the point that Thomas' magic unintentionally preforms miracles, Harleys body suddenly being empty of all the chemicals, Ivy being more in touch with nature and understanding the importance of balancing it rather then disrupting that balance, and Victor suddenly know the formula needed to save his wife.

Thomas and Percy meet a young Rachel Roth(Raven), and befriend her, the gold dust helping to stablize Rachel's emotional effect on her powers, and breaking down her demon blood and destroying her connection to Trigon.

The Gold Dust is a magic of miracles that keeps balance and is born of hope and kindness, should a person find hope while in close proximity of the magic a small miracle will occur, if multiple people, like say a city, were to find hope and wish for the same thing, a miracle will occur based on those wishes.
