Dark Wolf
The next day, Lilly crept out of bed earlier than usual to change the bandages on her shin. She studied the bite mark. It was deep, but small, and she would have to take care not to open the wound again. She disposed of the bloody rag she had used last night, and ripped several of her handkerchiefs to bind it up. When she had freshened up and returned to her room, Ella was awake. "Lilly? Where were you last night? Aunt and I were worried!"
"Ella, please don't tell Aunt Brank where I am! I was at um- my secret lovers place last night and I don't want her to know! Tell her I'm with Patsy, I need to get back now!" As soon as she had mentioned her 'secret lover' Ella's face had brightened.
"Of course Lills! Now go back! Tell me about it later please?" After promising her sister, Lilly once again clambered out of her window and dropped to the ground. She ran into the shed and changed, emerging just a few minutes later in her men's attire. The pants leg was soaked with blood, and her tailcoat was in shambles, but luckily, her waistcoat had survived without a scratch.
Lilly arrived at Empire House on a Saturday morning at exactly 8 o'clock. Fishing her keys out of her pocket, Lilly unlocked the front doors, closing it behind her. The usually busy lobby was devoid of human life, and not even Sallow face was at the front desk. Lilly limped up the stairs to the seventh landing, where Mr. Ambrose's office was. From here, Lilly could see that the door was open just a crack, allowing a sliver of early morning light through.
Quietly, Lilly approached the door, ears straining to hear a sound. She placed her hand on the doorknob. Should she go in? A familiar, cold voice came from behind the door. "Come in, Mr. Linton." Surprised, Lilly swung the door open and entered. Mr. Ambrose was standing at the other end of the room, behind his desk. His tailcoat and waistcoat was off, and laid on his chair. His shirt red with blood at his shoulder, but Lilly felt relieved. He was alright.
"Mr. Ambrose."
He turned around, facing her. The buttons of his shirt was halfway opened, revealing his toned stomach. "Lillian."
"Are-are you alright?"
"I only suffered a small bite. I am fine." They fell silent again, Lilly not meeting his eyes. "Why are you here? It's Saturday."
"I just- I wanted to uh, check if you were dead or not. Wolf or no, you still have my money." A faint smile twitched on his features.
"I see."
"I'll just go now, Sir," Lilly turned around, forgetting that her trousers were torn and marked with blood. Mere seconds later, Mr. Ambrose was in front of her, blocking the door. "What?"
"Were you bitten?" His voice was icy, but it sounded scared. His pupils dilated, and he pushed her back, hands clutching desperately at her shoulders.
"Bit-bitten?"
"Yes! Were you? Answer me!" Her face, stricken, looked at him blankly, and he groaned, rubbing his face. "Show it to me." When she didn't comply, he growled, lifting her up onto his desk. He pulled the leg of her trousers up to her knee, ignoring her protests.
"Stop! STOP IT! It's just a bite!"
"It's not just a bite, Ms. Linton. You could be turned from this." At his words, Lilly stopped struggling, allowing him to unwind the bandage covering the bite mark. He sucked in a breath, staring at the chunk of skin missing from her shin and the jagged mark.
"What are you going to do? Do you have a healing thing or something?" Lilly cried, shaking. She didn't want to turn into a wolf!
"I do... Wolf saliva has healing properties..." He looked up at her, asking her permission. Knowing that this might be her only chance, Lilly nodded. 'Stop him Lilly! This isn't proper!'
Ignoring the voice, she sat back, and taking this as consent, Mr. Ambrose turned, a loud popping sound ensuing. The black wolf appeared in his place, and Lilly tried to ignore the sharp fangs protruding from his jaw as he opened his maw. Mr. Ambrose started to lick the wound, his tongue cleansing the wound thoroughly.
Surprisingly, the rasping of his tongue on her leg was comforting, sending Lilly laying back onto his desk. She sighed, eyes rolling back into her head. So this was what if felt like to have a dog. Not that Mr. Ambrose was one of course... He was scarier... More handsome. A blush started to creep up her neck, and tired as she was, Lilly started to fall drowsily into sleep.
The gentle sensation of lips on hers woke her up, and as she blinked her eyes open, she met the human irises of Mr. Ambrose. He was so close, it seemed to Lilly as though she could count the lashes on his eye lids. 1.. 2... 3... 4... His lips met hers again, and Lilly stopped counting, closing her eyes and bringing her hands up around his neck. Mr. Ambrose gently kept his weight on his foot, careful not to crush Lilly underneath him.
He released her lips, instead kissing her cheeks gently, leading them down her neck. She sighed breathing hard. He was eliciting feelings within her that no self respected feminist should have. He kissed her hard, one more time before letting her go.
Lilly hurriedly stood up, smoothing down her shirt and fighting down the blush that was threatening to overtake her face. "So... I won't become a werewolf ?"
"Oh no. You might. Every werewolf bite has a fifty fifty chance of turning the victim."
"What?! Didn't your saliva or whatever just heal me or something?!"
"I made sure that if you do turn into a werewolf, you will belong to me." Mr. Ambrose replied coldly. "If you turn, you will not belong to the East Clan, instead to mine."
Glaring coldly at Mr. Ambrose, Lilly growled. "When will I find out then?"
"One month from now, when the moon wanes full again."
"I'll see you on Tuesday, sir!" Stomping out of Empire House, Lilly ran home. She couldn't believe she had a 50% chance of becoming part wolf! What would she do then?!
The rest of the month passed quickly, neither her nor Mr. Ambrose saying a word of what had happened that night. So when November 29th finally came, Lilly bade him goodnight, went back home to eat dinner with her family, and returned before the moon had risen fully.
She knocked on his door, the pounding matching that of her heart. "Please! No.."
Mr. Ambrose opened the door, same as always. When the door swung open, it revealed five other wolves and Karim. "Why are they here?" She murmured, knowing that Mr. Ambrose would hear her. His being a werewolf explained many things, including how he was so unaffected by the elements in Egypt, and his uncanny ability to hear even the softest sounds.
"They are my Selsas, which is below the Delta. They are here to witness your possible transformation." Nodding nervously, Lilly went inside. Karim nodded at her, staying out of the moonlight streaming in from the windows.
"What do I do?"
"Just stand in the moonlight Lilly," Mr. Ambrose said, trying to keep his voice from quivering in excitement. He had yet to find his mate, could Lilly be the one?
Steeling herself, Lilly approached the pool of moonlight that could very well change her life. 1.. 2.. 3.. She stepped into the moonlight, closing her eyes in nervous anticipation. Nothing happened. She opened her eyes, staring into the cold illumination of the moon. Nothing. She turned back to Mr. Ambrose, and a wide smile spread across her face! She was safe.
Mr. Ambrose's heart dropped, plummeting to dark depths. She was the only one he could tolerate, maybe even love. Lilly prepared to step out of the light, scanning the gleaming eyes of the wolves around her. Was it her or were they looking disappointed, as were Karim and Mr. Ambrose? That was when the pain hit her.
Molten fire spread across her skin, sending her to the floor, writhing. The other wolves, seeing this, howled in triumph, and even Mr. Ambrose cracked a smile. Then her screaming started, echoing in the stone chamber, in sync with the soulful howls of the Selsas. Mr. Ambrose fought the urge to comfort her. This was how the moon knew that she was worthy of its power, if she could survive its pain, she would be a true werewolf.
Then she stopped writhing. Stopped screaming. She laid on the ground, her hair in wide halo of brown around her. The wolves stopped howling and watched. Her skin shimmered silver, then it disappeared. In its place, fur sprouted, her body shrunk, and her hands and feet melted into paws and claws. Her face elongated into that of a wolf's and her ears grew conical. Finally, Lilly's transformation was complete, leaving a magnificent brown wolf in her place.
Mr. Ambrose studied her wolf body, her fur was long, silky and brown. Her face lighter and the markings around it highlighting her features. He found himself falling, more than ever before. When he bent down to rouse her, a searing pain flowed from her fur and into his skin. Mr. Ambrose cried out, alerting his wolves and Karim, who ran forward to pull his boss from the ifrit. To his surprise, he found that his hand was unmovable from her fur, and Karim moved back, understanding creeping into his eyes.
Mr. Ambrose hunched his back from the pain, his eyes flying open and dilating to wolf like size. He transformed, his black wolf collapsing next to the brown one and falling still. His delta and selsas waited, triumph flowing through them. Their leader had finally found his mate.
Lilly woke at the same time Mr. Ambrose did, and found herself staring into the enticing eyes of Mr. Ambrose. They were almost nose to nose, and Lilly found herself flicking her tongue out to touch Mr. Ambrose's gently. He stood, nosing her up. Unsteadily, Lilly pulled herself to her paws.
She was a wolf.
She studied the world around her with better eyes. Color seemed stranger as an animal, but she didn't mind. Her power of scent had almost gotten ten times stronger. She could smell everything! Mr. Ambrose's familiar, cold scent, the other wolves wilder one, and Karim's heady one assaulted her nose as she took deep, calming breaths. In addition, her hearing had sharpened, allowing her to hear all the way down to the street, where she knew a woodpecker was currently pecking away at a nearby wagon wheel.
Mr. Ambrose was studying Lilly gently, appreciating her wolfish figure. She was beautiful.
Lilly opened her mouth and barked, "Let's run!!" In agreement, the other wolves streamed out of the office, Karim himself turning too and following after them. Lilly stretched her body, bounding out of the office and after her new pack. Mr. Ambrose easily outpaced her, but Lilly determined, kept up. Seeing as it was only ten at night, quite a few other people were out and about, but to her surprise, Lilly found that she could dash quickly from shadow to shadow without the humans seeing her. Was she really this blind before? The world flashed by, the new scents and scenes amazing her. London was an outstanding place, a storm of scents and nonexistent silence . She could easily tell which person was which, and even caught a hint of her scent from when she was human. Sweet, and surprisingly like lilies.
Mr. Ambrose led her out of London and into the countryside. They raced and leaped over fields and grasses. Lilly found that her endurance was much better, and that she enjoyed the sensation of the wind in her face. They finally stopped, panting in a forest clearing, a few miles away from London.
Mr. Ambrose turned to her, and without speaking, Lilly knew that he was laughing. She nudged him lightly with her nose, and nipped his fur lightly. The selsas behind them breathed in a quick gasp, but Mr. Ambrose smirked and bowled her over. She yelped, and the other wolves relaxed at his sudden playfulness.
Lilly pawed at him, glaring angrily at her Alpha. Karim snorted, walking past her and into the cave. Mr. Ambrose followed, and Lilly did too. The scents of other wolves started to assault her nose, and Lilly breathed them in. This was her home now.
The other wolves greeted the new comer with wagging tails and friendly, wolfish smiles and snaps. She responded, even to the male wolves, who liked this new feisty she wolf. They hoped feverishly that she had not yet been claimed by her mate, for they quite liked her. Unbeknownst to them, she was actually their Alphas'. Mr. Ambrose watched his pack react to the new addition, and fought the urge to claw the other males for taking an interest in his mate. Neither Lilly nor any other wolf knew, unless they were present at her Turning.
Leaping up onto a stone, he howled, calling them to attention. Lilly turned toward Mr. Ambrose, sitting regally on the stone, his black fur shining in the moonlight. His head, proudly held up, showed the regal slope of his snout and bright, alert eyes. His ears were erect He looked truly the epitome of an Alpha. She nosed the small pups away from her, and moved closer.
"West Pack!" His voice rumbled around the room. "Our newest addition, Lilly Linton. She lives in London."
"Who turned her?" Someone called out, and Mr. Ambrose turned toward them, smirking.
"I did." A ripple of whispers ran through the assembled wolves. It had been a long while since their Leader himself had turned someone, so they knew that this wolf was special. Lilly stared up in confusion at him. Hadn't that other wolf bitten her...?
"She may visit again next month. I will give her a tour now of our territory, and if we have time you can get to know her before we leave back for London." He leaped down from the rock, making his way over to her.
"Let's go," He growled and Lilly ran after him. The two wolves ran, wind streaming through their fur at more than fifty miles an hour. No natural wolf could have done such a feat, but these two were werewolves, one of the most powerful of the Supernatural species of this world. Lilly saw truly, that, not only was Mr. Ambrose a rich financial magnate, he was also a courageous leader. To have conquered so much land, and at such a young age as 26 was outstanding. She could also see now, why his rivalry with Lord Dalgliesh was so extreme. They were competing for control over London!
The West pack was just a few miles larger in territory than the East Pack, and had more members than the East. However, the East Pack had also officiated several treaties from other smaller packs in the area, and the War was ongoing. Mr. Ambrose was careful to make this clear to Lilly, and made her promise not to stray any longer on the East side of London.
Lilly was also taught the patrolling schedules. Every wolf in the West pack had to patrol a section of the perimeter at least four times a month. But first, she had to learn how to fight. Mr. Ambrose also informed her, that a few townspeople on the West side of London, where she lived, were also werewolves part time, and promised to show them to her later on.
Lilly also learned, that Mr. Ambrose wasn't always the cold chauvinist that he was. Being part of a wolf pack, he valued the females that made the pack work. He had just been pretending to stay in character. He was quite fun, as a wolf. He was more liable to stop what he was doing, and roll her to the ground in a friendly act of play fighting, which both wolves were now engaged in.
Lilly snapped, closing her jaws around his ear and tugging on it. Mr. Ambrose growled, pawing her in the stomach, forcing her to let go. He pounced on top of her, barking throatily. She growled back, rolling on the floor. Both fell to the ground in a mess of fur and paws. Lilly laughed, panting happily. She laid her head back on the ground, raising her eyes to the heavens. The moon was low in the sky now, and the stars were winking out one at a time. Mr. Ambrose watched her, love in his eyes. He was content, complete. She was his. He laid back down next to her, resting his chin on her head, seeing as he was several inches taller than her. He breathed in her sweet flowery scent, committing it to memory.
They spent the rest of the night as wolves, curled together in the hollow of a trees' roots.
Lilly woke up, yawning, as the sun's rays slanted heavily down onto her. Her fur felt warm and heavy. Turning her head, she met saw that Mr. Ambrose's head was resting on her back. She smiled mischievously. Reaching forward, she poked her nose into his ear and huffed out a breath. Nothing. She stuck her tongue out and started lapping at it, tickling the inside.
Mr. Ambrose jolted awake, glaring at her, then his eyes softened as he saw who it was. "Lilly."
"Mr. Ambrose."
He frowned. "Don't call me that," He huffed.
"What then?" A great idea struck her next. "What about Dick?"
He laughed a human like laugh, phasing back into his usual self. Lilly soon followed, finding herself in his warm embrace. He kissed her softly then pulled back. "I'll stick with Rick." His eyes dropped to her collar bones and a wide smile broke out on his face.
Surprised, Lilly stared at him suspiciously. "What is it?"
"Nothing, my love." He bent his neck to kiss her softly on the skin above her heart, and Lilly saw a glimpse of something black on her skin. Before she could find out what it was, Rick bit her softly and Lilly gasped in surprise. He continued to kiss her sweetly, as if to claim her. Lilly grasped his human ears and pulled his neck back. He stared curiously at her.
"We have to go Mr. Ambrose." Nodding, he stood up, unwinding himself from her. He stood up, stretching his arms. His shirt lifted slightly, and Lilly saw the image of a wolf on his heart. She stood too, and captured the fabric of his shirt, pulling him closer to her. He lifted his neck willingly, allowing her to see the ink marking his skin there.
'He didn't have this in Egypt!'
Oh shush!
Lilly traced the face of the wolf on his heart. It looked extremely familiar.
'Ugh don't you know yet? It's you, stupid!'
Lilly gasped. The voice was right. The slope of the ears and the markings on the fur made it clear, that it was, indeed, her. "What does this mean?" She asked, tracing the wolf's features.
"That you are mine, Lillian. I am your mate."
**One Year Later**
The wolf growled, biting down on the stick and splintering it between her jaws. Her howl of pain echoed in the small side cave, and one of the other female wolves, Felicity, hurried to her head and licked it comfortingly. Ella, her light fur easily visible by her haunches, looked up at her sister, excitedly. "You're so close, just a little bit more Lilly!" Yes, Ella Linton. A few months after Lilly had been turned by Mr. Ambrose's saliva (it contained no healing properties), Ella had been bitten, along with Edmund when they were trying to elope, for they had surprised a two adolescent wolves playing in a clearing on the outskirts of London. Since then, Ella and Edmund became mates and lived under the protection of the Alpha Pair, Rikkard and Lilly.
Lilly growled, pushing one more time. Finally! Her pups slid out of her easily, one at a time onto the mossy floor of the cave. Their little cries drew her to them, the pain already fading as fast as it had come. The five other females yipped happily, then left to inform their Alpha of his mate's condition.
Ella stayed, crouching down to see her nieces and nephews. Four girls, two boys, all varying colors of brown, black, and white. Lilly nosed them gently toward her belly, allowing them to feed on her milk. The skittering of claws on stone alerted her to Rikkard's presence, and she looked up, meeting his eyes. Love shone out of them as he caught sight of his children.
He padded forward, sniffing them gently. He looked over at her, and rumbled, "Adequate job, Lilly." She growled lightly, kicking him when he tried to get closer. He nosed her gently in the side, letting her know it was just a joke.
The two wolves curled up together as a family, and Ella crept out, letting them rejoice to themselves.
When Lilly awoke, the warmth had disappeared from her belly, and she sat up in surprise. She raised her nose, picking out the scent of her mate and her children leading out into the snow outside. Being the Alpha pair, they had chosen a private cave as their shelter when out of London. There, they were married as Mr. and Mrs. Ambrose and lived in a nice, small, brick house. However much Mr. Ambrose loved his wife, he was still a cheap miser.
Lilly followed the winding tunnel and out into the snowy wilderness. She found her pups outside, snuffling about, their cute, stubby little tails wagging. When they caught sight of their mother, they reared up, bounding toward her. Yipping happily, they cried, "Good morning! Good morning! Father took us outside, said you were tired!"
She nuzzled their soft, fluffy fur. "Thank you. I'll just be over here, go on , play now." She made her way over to Rikkard, who was sitting underneath a pine bough. He licked her face as she sat down, and both parents watched their pups playing. The two males, already considerably larger than the rest were playfighting in the snow. The brown one bowled over the black one and chewed on his ear. One of the smallest females, black furred and blue eyed, joined in, pouncing on her elder brother and taking him off the black one. Then, both wolves pounced on the stronger brown wolf, taking him down. The three other females, all brown, were rolling peacefully in the snow. Lilly even saw one methodically scooping snow out of a hole and into a large pile. Already, she'd dug out five holes and was beginning to make a circle. She smiled, already seeing how Rikkard's and her own traits had balanced iut among the pups. She couldn't wait to teach them how to hunt!
Deciding that she'd had enough of spending a whole month as a wolf, (she had to because being in human form while pregnant with six organisms hurt), and phased back to herself. She stretched, raising her arms to the sky, catching the first few snowflakes.
Rikkard stepped out behind her, wearing only his trousers and white shirt. Being a werewolf made you practically immune to the elements a wolf could survive in. He pulled her toward him and met her lips in their first kiss as parents. Both broke away, feeling tiny little claws pawing at their legs. The pups stared up at them with wide eyes, all shades of brown and their father's unique blue. They were hungry, Lilly reckoned, seeing their wide mouths stretched open for food. She gave Rikkard one more kiss, then phased back.
The Alphas led their pups back home, ready to face the future with their children by their side.
Happy Halloween!
