A New Beginning Part 2
Thank you to @FrosinaSazdova for the help on the Victorian pregnancy test thing! It's more accurate now!
She groaned, retching as the vile taste of her dinner from last night left her mouth. Ella crooned softly, holding her hair from her face as Lilly emptied her stomach yet again into the toilet. After another five minutes of retching, Lilly stood and pulled the string to initiate the flush.
"Lilly, are you alright? Should we call a doctor? Tell Aunt Brank? You've been sick for a week now," a 19 year old Ella cried fretfully.
"No! Don't tell Aunt Brank!" Lilly gasped, catching her breath. "I'm going to the Doctor this morning Ella, then I have to go meet James." During the month that Mr. Ambrose had been gone, Captain James Carter had started to pursue her. Lilly, knowing that James was likely to be the suitor that she would have to spend the rest of her life with, was content. They had known each other for two years, and she knew that he respected her greatly. But she couldn't stop the pain in her heart. No, James Carter had always been her best friend, aside from Ella. As much as she hated to admit it, her heart belonged to that cold chauvinistic son of a bachelor, Mr. Ambrose. Who, consequently, had also left her.
Lilly was helped into her petticoats, hoop skirt, and green dress. Aunt Brank called them down for breakfast. Breakfast at the Linton household was a much quieter affair now. Maria, Anne, and Gertrude had married triplet brothers the last year. All three, even Gertrude, were relatively happy. Stuart, Brent, and Tom Tarleton were gentlemen and cared for her sisters greatly. Now, only her Aunt, Lisbeth, and Ella were left, as Uncle Brank still had not left the confines of his room.
"Where are you going today, girls?" Aunt Brank smiled at them. She still had not come down from her euphoric high of having married off three of her nieces with rich gentlemen.
"I'll be meeting Patsy and the girls later in the park. But first I'll be meeting Captain Carter." Lilly told her, knowing she wouldn't bother her for the rest of the day, as long as the Captain was involved.
"Alright Lilly. You can go ahead if you want." Grabbing her parasol at the side of the door, Lilly went out and called a coach. Doctor Bruin had offices on the better side of London, near Empire House. As she passed by the tall grey building, Lilly resisted the urge to stop the driver. The Empire House seemed cold and empty to her, and the memories of her last night with him were fresh in her mind. Mr. Ambrose was running his business from his home, wherever that was. Now, only slightly less scared employees worked there, the absence of their boss was palpable. However, Lilly knew Mr. Ambrose would most likely drop in every once in awhile to keep everyone on their toes.
The coach stopped in front of the office. Dr. Bruin wasn't a rich doctor, no, but he did his job fairly well. Lilly entered the building for her appointment and was immediately shown into a room. She sat down in the reclined padded chair. The door opened and the middle aged gentlemen admitted himself, smiling reassuringly at her. "Good to see you, Ms. Linton. May I inquire as to why you've scheduled an appointment for today?"
She smiled and obliged, telling him, "Yes, Doctor Bruin I've been throwing up for a week and my head hurts in the morning." His eyebrows furrowed in concern.
"Have you eaten anything strange lately?" Um... Potatoes, boiled potatoes, stringy beans, small pieces of meat, mashed potatoes...
"No, I haven't."
"Alright," Dr. Bruin said, and handed her a jar. "Can you please urinate into this?" Lilly regarded him strangely but shrugged, proceeding into the bathroom. She peed in the jar, then came back out, giving it to the doctor.
"What are you going to do?" Dr. Bruin went to a glass container in the corner of his office, pulling out a green frog. He dropped the frog into the urine. "Can you come back in an hour and half? I'll have your results by then." Lilly nodded, then stepped out of the office. She proceeded directly to the chocolate shop across the street, spending an entire hour there. When the clock struck 10:40, she crossed back across the street, still licking the chocolate from her fingers.
Dr. Bruin met her at the door and led her to a reclined chair. Lilly studied the doctor, his graying hair and lined features. "Ms. Linton," He began, not meeting her eyes. "I don't know any other way to say this but... You're pregnant."
She stared, unblinkingly at the other side of the wall. The green frog from earlier was in another container now. Several eggs were on the glass next to it. She remembered how some of the women newly married had exclaimed with each other about how 'Frog Eggs!' showed up. "Pregnant?" She repeated, dumbly.
"Yes. It is when a woman is bearing a child." He told her, rather unnecessarily. She knew what it was!
Lilly was frozen, the truth ringing awfully in her ears. Pregnant. Pregnant. Pregnant. With who's baby? I think you know. No, I don't. Whose else could it be? It can't be. It is.
"Ms.- Ms. Linton, I will not tell anyone else. But you need to tell the Father. And perhaps your Aunt." Her eyes widened, and he backtracked. "Okay, maybe not your Aunt. But the Father, at least." Lilly left the Doctor's dazed and confused. She was pregnant. How the bloody hell will I tell him! He didn't even think of leaving an address! Lilly's current predicament left her fuming at Mr. Ambrose, who, asides from being her former boss, was now the father of her child! Once people find out you're pregnant and unmarried, this will cause a scandal! Yeah, well, I don't care!! Are you sure? The child will be an outcast forever. As much as Lilly hated to admit it, her crazy voice was right. Who was she to subject her own child to a miserable future? She needed to marry, and fast!
Big Ben struck 12, it's loud metallic BONGS echoing throughout London. It shook her out of her reverie, making her realize that she was late in meeting Captain Carter. Captain Carter! I can marry the Captain!
She hailed a coach, yelling for it to hurry up and get to James Park. She needed to ask for his hand! When she arrived, she immediately met his sparkling hazel eyes. "Ah, my dear Ms. Linton. How are you this fine day?"
"I'm terribly sorry, I got held up at a Doctor's appointment. Shall we walk?"
"We shall," He grinned, flashing pearly white teeth. The point of his goatee twitched slightly. The park in early October was rather beautiful, Lilly thought, watching was the orange leaves of a tree drifted down. She studied the clear, peaceful image of herself on the pond's still surface. How simple my life is, she thought, staring at her tired face in the water. Soon I will become a mother, and my child's father won't even know it exists.
She caught the eye of the man standing next to her. He was studying her also in the water, a soft, kind look in his eyes, that reminded Lilly of Mr. Ambrose. He had looked exactly like that on their last night, with compassion lurking in his eyes. Yes but Mr. Ambrose doesn't have compassion, he left you! Now you are carrying his child! She reminded herself. Breaking the peaceful silence, she turned to the Captain. "Do you love me?"
He looked at her, rather taken aback by her forwardness. "What?"
"Do you love me?" She asked again, wondering at his answer. Sensing that Lilly was completely serious, James Carter told the truth.
"Yes, I do. Ever since Egypt actually." He confessed with a shy smile. His eyes were far away, as though recalling the events of that time.
"Do you not want to marry me, then?" Lilly asked. She didn't why, but, she felt sad.
"Of course I do! I just- I thought you wouldn't want to."
"Then, marry me." She told him bluntly, grinning slightly at the astounded look on his face.
Dropping immediately to one knee, he pulled out a worn velvet box from his coat pocket. "I bought this two years ago," He explained. "I never had the guts to ask though. Would you, Miss Lillian Linton, do me the honors of becoming my bride?" He pulled the lid of the box open, exposing a shining silver ring with a small clear diamond on it.
Lilly saw James kneel, smiling, but when he opened his mouth, the voice that came out wasn't his. "Mr. Linton! I demand that you marry me, immediately." A sad smile tugged at her mouth, and she nodded, shaking the mirage away.
"Yes."
