91.

Sue went to follow the two Starks back towards the elevator. Howard said he needed to pick some things up from his office along the way, and Tony was able to stutter out that he would walk him there. Sue hung back to let them talk as she knew that this was a moment for Tony to talk to his father for the first time in over twenty years. But as she passed a window that showed the outside of the base, she stopped and let the two disappear around a corner.

'Sue? You there?' Tony hissed over his shoulder while Howard grabbed some flowers and a pot of sauerkraut from his office.

'Who's Sue?'

'Uh...' Tony had to think fast as Howard Stark stared at him with a raised eyebrow. 'The woman in my head. I have a mental issue.'

'Oh. I'm sorry...'

'Oh, no. She's great. She's... yeah, she's great.'

Susan stared out the window that showed the New Jersey'land that seemed to stretch on forever. None of the base's occupants tended to this side of the base, so Sue was the only one who viewed the vast landscape. It was bland and boring, but it was the sky that drew Sue's attention. A reflective dot soared downwards and grew bigger as it headed for the base. She squinted at the bright light that she thought was a trick of her eyes, but when it grew to have arms, legs and a surfboard under its feet, she knew that she wasn't hallucinating.

Heading out of the building in a sprint, Sue didn't care that her loud footsteps thudded against the floor. A woman let out a yelp as she thought it was a ghost that barrelled past her, and others turned their heads in confusion at the noise that led towards the backdoor.

Sue broke out the door that led to the secluded side of the base and kept her gaze to the sky. Its blue was fading from the arrival of the evening and the sun would soon set over the east. They would need to be heading back to their time, but Sue couldn't leave at the sight of the silver surfer.

'Do not be afraid,' the monotone voice that she knew too well sounded. The surfer hovered in the sky and looked down at Sue, her invisibility doing nothing in tricking him.

'You can see me? And why the hell shouldn't I be afraid?' Sue called out. 'You're part of Thanos' children, right? Are you here to stop us from finding the Stones? Because that's not going to fly-'

'I am not here under Thanos' command,' the surfer's pupilless eyes blinked. 'I am here to fulfil history. You must come with me.'

'What are you on about? Why would I ever trust you?'

'I am no longer serving Thanos,' it lowered down to the floor to be on an equal level as Sue. She couldn't read any emotions on the reflective face that she had encountered multiple times throughout her years. But when it stepped off its board and disturbed the dirt under its feet, she was surprised. SHIELD had concluded that the alien got its power from the board and it was defenceless without it. But it remained off of its power source and was left exposed.

'I was promised the survival of my planet by Thanos. But like the remainder of the universe, its inhabitants were halved. Including the one I love...'

Sue remembered the day SHIELD took down the surfer in Germany. It stated that it was observing for its master, who it served to spare its planet and lover. But it seemed that even the surfer couldn't escape the monstrosity of Thanos' lust for power.

'I'm sorry for your loss. But I lost too...' Sue felt bitterness in her heart.

'I am aware. But there is more to what could be lost to you, Susan Storm.'

'How so?' a chill ran down her spine when it said her full name.

'The events of the cosmic storm that gave you your abilities was a moment in history that is vital to the Quantum timeline. But it needed interference. A disturbance is and was necessary for the prophecy that is the world that you know.'

'You're throwing a lot of words at me that are beyond believable right now. You're talking about the Marvel-1 mission?'

'Yes. The other Storm. The one who suffered under Thanos' greed.'

'... Johnny?'

'Yes. There must be interference to ensure that the future is written the same. Written so that the Earth's torch is alight.'

'You've lost me...'

'Allow me to show you. We must go into the future to the cosmic storm.'

'Wait, the cosmic storm hit in 2009. You want to time travel to 2009?!'

'Yes. It is vital.'

'But how?! We're here trying to get more Pym Particles so that we can head back to our rightful time. You want me to jump back to my time and then back to 2009? It's not possible. There's not enough,' Sue's head was spinning.

'I will take you back to your rightful time after the prophecy is set correctly. This must happen, Susan Storm.'

'So, you can actually time travel? Like, Back To The Future time travel?' the surfer stayed silent and she sighed. 'Why me? Who am I in all this?'

Everything sounded like a dream. The talk of the cosmic storm that hit the Marvel-1 had thrown Sue into a spiral that she hadn't visited in years. So much had happened since then and it wasn't something that played on her mind, as aliens and murderbots had filled that space. Johnny's survival during the storm was a mystery, but it was downplayed into one of the many mysteries of space. And how could she be sure that the surfer wasn't under a past Thanos' command to ensure the Infinity Stones were not taken before he could get to them? However, the way the surfer stepped off its board and spoke with the words of time travel and Quantum interference, she couldn't help but fall into the story from needing to believe it.

'You are everything, Susan Storm.'

Sue bit her lip and put her finger to her ear. She couldn't believe what she was about to do, but from what she saw, Tony had the Tesseract and would soon be heading back to their time with Steve. Their mission was done, but she couldn't leave at the proposition of fixing some sort of hole in their supposed timeline. She had no time to consult Bruce, who seemed to be the only one with definitive facts about time travel. And Tony was out of the question.

'Steve?'

'Sue? Are you okay? I've got eyes on Tony, are you nearby?' the Captain's voice flowed into her ear.

'Do you have the particles?'

'I do. Enough for the jump home. Just waiting on Tony to say goodbye to his dad.'

'I'm gonna need mine in advance.'

---

'Are you absolutely sure about this?'

'No. But I don't think I've ever been sure about anything when it comes to this sort of stuff...'

'Sue, you're talking about interfering with time. I know that Bruce said you can't change your future, but this can't be good.'

Sue and Steve were hidden around the back of a building on the military base. The Storm slipped out of her invisibility to be able to talk to the man who was against her idea. He didn't like the arrival of the silver surfer, who waited in the air away from the base. They had a meeting point that was away from prying eyes and once Sue had her ticket home, the surfer would take her into the future. How it had the ability to time travel, she didn't know, but seeing as it was an alien who flew on a surfboard, she chose not to question the how and why.

'I don't know if Johnny will cease to exist if I don't do this...' Sue said and the look of uncertainty from Steve made her question what she thought she was doing. 'What if Bruce was wrong? What if what we do now actually affects us in the present? What if whatever made Johnny survive the storm on the Marvel-1 never happened because I didn't go back to fix it?'

'You're talking about some big what if's, Sue...' Steve felt like he was betraying Tony by not consulting him on this matter. 'If you're right, then what did we change back in 2012? I beat myself up, for crying out loud!'

'I don't know, Steve!' Sue ran her hands down her face. She was overwhelmed with decisions that she didn't know if they were right or wrong. No one was there to tell her if what she was about to do would alter reality or be a trap. But if the surfer was telling the truth and Johnny's survival needed the interference in order to set the timeline right, then she couldn't stand by and watch.

'I-I want to... no, I need to do this. Please, Steve.'

Steve thought about his next actions carefully. If he let Sue go and they were wrong about the surfer's intentions, all their efforts for the Stones would have been for nothing. But if he didn't let her and he was right, the unimaginable could happen. His years of leadership during the war and in the present led up to this moment, and he was stumped. Not only did he face Tony's wrath once he found out that they consulted without him, but he faced the possibility of losing his best friends, Johnny and/or Susan.

'You come back, Storm. You come back even if you have to crawl,' Steve held out the vial of Pym Particles, his frown tight and his brow low over his eyes. Sue tried not to appear too eager and swallowed at the sight of the crimson vial in the Rogers' hand.

'You got it, Cap.'

With the thought of Booker, who was back home with Pepper and Ruby, Sue took the vial and swivelled around on her heel. If she was wrong, she might not ever see her son again. But she had to take the risk. Steve watched her go with a heavy heart before turning back to head around the building, where Tony's first words were,

'Where's Susan?'

---

'Before I do this, can you explain to me how this is possible? How... will we actually alter time?'

Sue was clad in her Quantum Suit in the middle of the field in New Jersey. About a mile away from the military base, Sue and the surfer met at their agreed meeting point. The surfer hovered above the ground on his board and eyed the woman who had packed away the vial of Pym Particles into her suit.

'The Quantum Realm which you travelled through has taken you to an alternative reality,' the surfer explained. 'But you must change the events of the cosmic storm that occurred in your timeline. This will amend the prophecy that is told.'

'How do you know all this?'

'Because it is how I see. All that must occur and all that cannot.'

'What happens if I don't do this?'

'Everything that we know will cease to exist.'

'R-Right. So, a bit more at stake than I thought...'

'SUSAN!'

The two turned and saw the red and rose gold suit that flew at them at top speed. Tony sent all power into his thrusters and felt the anger bubble in his stomach. Even in the past he couldn't escape the silver alien that had interfered too much in his life. First, his wedding was ruined by the surfer's arrival on Earth. Then, he was pumelled on Titan by Thanos with the help of his silver sidekick. Now he was trying to destroy one of the two things he had left in his world.

Steve crumbled almost immediately when Tony appeared and the mention of Booker living without his mother made him cave completely. He told Tony about the surfer and it's supposed misson of correcting history. Tony had wasted no time in forming his suit and heading into the air, scouting the perimeter for the shiny being that he would finish once and for all. It's what Johnny would have wanted and it's what would save Sue, at least that's what he believed.

'Let's time jump, mate' Sue squeaked and immediately ran for the surfer. In one swift motion, the alien swooped down, and Sue jumped up onto its board. She felt her feet sink an inch into the silver and secured her place on its surface. Like a goo, she watched the toes and heels of her suit's boots be submerged in the thick liquid.

The surfer bent its legs as it willed the board to turn and shoot further into the sky. Sue wasn't expecting the sudden action and reared her arms in circles to keep her balance, wind rushing at her face and drying out her mouth in seconds.

'Sue! What are you doing?! How could you trust this guy?!' Tony's voice drifted through the wind and Sue looked over shoulder, loose hairs in her eyes and fringe blown back. Tony's suit was gaining on them, and the angled eyes of the mask made it appear as if Tony was angry. Which he probably was as the thought of losing Sue to one of Thanos' tricks and making his fears come to life.

'What happens if I don't?! What happens if Johnny doesn't exist?!' she called back. The helmet of the Quantum Suit formed around her head and her eyes were lit by its blue hue. The surfer flew the two of them out of the Earth's atmosphere and Tony had no choice but to slow down. His suit was still not equipped to go into space, a feature he wished he had installed previously. He watched helplessly as his world grew smaller and he cursed loudly in frustration.

'You come back, Susan! You come back to me!'

Tony's last words hit her hard. The Earth's sky turned dark, and stars gleamed in space's abyss. It had been over a decade since Sue had been to space, and it was yet to be mundane. The sight of the endless void was brightened by the collection of stars and far off planets. She looked over her shoulder to the Earth that was still in 1970, its future full of the unexpected and changes that humanity could never begin to believe.

'We must jump through the Quantum Realm to return to your time,' the surfer turned around on his board as it pulled to a stop. 'Use the particles that you have acquired.'

'You said that you can see what has to happen and what can't, right?' Sue pulled the vial of Pym Particles out of her suit and gripped them tightly in her palm. 'Can you see if... we get all the Infinity Stones? In my timeline, do we win?'

'There is an outcome in your timeline where this is possible,' the surfer stared at the human enclosed in the Quantum Suit. 'But there are many other opposing forces that could alter this outcome.'

'What are our odds?'

'One in fourteen million-six-hundred and five.'

Sue went rigid and stared at the vial in her hands. Even if she fixed the supposed kink in her timeline, would Thanos defeat them for the second time? The surfer's explanation confused her beyond comprehension, but she was able to gather that everything would play out as it is supposed to if she travelled back to the Marvel-1. Jumping back into her timeline would mean that she would change something that then straightens her and everyone's future. But what was the cost? Who would suffer from this change?

'Are you prepared?' the surfer asked after Sue went silent. The crimson vial sat innocently in her hand; its power too great for someone like her. With her back to the Earth and Tony, who was probably beating Steve to a pulp for letting her go, she made her choice. Unsure if it was her enemy or ally, she looked to the surfer who waited for her verdict.

'Let's do it.'
