89.

The elevator dinged and the doors slid open to reveal the top floor of the Stark tower. The past team of Avengers turned their heads and the group that were a part of SHIELD stepped out. With a briefcase at the ready for the Tesseract, Loki was put in handcuffs and kept beside Thor, who was over his brother's desire to rule the planet he loved.

'We can take that off your hands,' the man named Sitwell walked up to Natasha, who held Loki's scepter that contained the Mine Stone.

'By all means,' she handed it to him. 'Careful with that thing.'

'Unless you want your mind erased. And not in a fun way,' Clint added.

'We promise to be careful.'

'Who are these guys?' Scott whispered from Tony's shoulder.

'They are SHIELD... well, actually HYDRA. But we didn't know that yet,' Tony explained. His younger self handled the Tesseract, while he watched the past Susan walk up to Johnny.

'Will Fury give you the okay to come to Malibu?' she asked her brother, the two only just reuniting earlier that day. Tony saw the smile on Sue's face, and he remembered the day he first met Johnny Storm. The ball of flames that flew into the rotors to help him push had stunned him at first, but it helped save the SHIELD helicarrier and everyone on it. It saddened Tony to think that Johnny was gone, but the Storm's past self was unaware of the hardships that would be coming in the next few years. He hoped that Sue, who was still in her position in the elevator, wouldn't be hurting too much at the sight of her brother.

'I really don't care if he's not,' Johnny shrugged with his arms crossed over his chest. 'Nicholas is not my babysitter. I can leave when I want.'

'Then why didn't you before?'

'Because I had nowhere to go.'

'Were you too scared to leave?'

'No! I was ensuring the safety of the world's citizens! I could've cooked everyone into a well-done steak when I had no control over it!'

'Sure, Johnny.'

'Jesus Christ, they bicker like kids!' Scott mentioned. 'Are they still like that?'

'Well, not anymore...' Tony's tone dropped into a sad one and Scott realised.

'Oh. Sorry, my bad.'

Tony glanced towards the elevator that sat open. There was no indication of Sue's presence inside its small box, but he knew that she was there. He wished he could make out her expression.

Five years without Johnny had been hard for Sue and even he had to admit that he missed the annoying, flaming hothead. It was worse for Pepper, who had to go through her pregnancy without her husband, and Ruby grew up without her father. Johnny had left behind his print on the world and was missed by those who loved him and even those he irritated. But this was what the mission was about; to bring everyone back who was mercilessly taken by Thanos' greed.

'On my way down to coordinate search and rescue,' Steve stated as he walked towards the elevator, and Loki transformed his appearance into the Rogers to imitate his behavior.

'On my way down to coordinate search and rescue,' Loki's voice came out as Steve's, before transforming back into his dark attire. 'I mean, honestly! How do you think you'll be-'

'Shut up,' Thor slapped a gag over his brother's mouth in annoyance.

2012 Tony took the Tesseract and placed it securely into the briefcase. Sitwell and Rumlow, the leaders of the team that were secretly HYDRA, oversaw this before closing the case. Tony nodded to the two men before grabbing the handle to head into the elevator with the rest of the team.

'Alright, you're up, little buddy. There's our Stone,' Tony said and lowered his shoulder to face the room. Scott crouched into position and stuck his backside out, pushing aside his pride for one moment.

'Alright. Flick me,' he ordered, and Tony did just that.

Scott flew across the room in his miniature size and landed on 2012 Tony. He was amongst the hairs of his beard before the man's hand went up to scratch at the disturbance to his skin. Scott jumped down and passed his adam's apple, before slipping underneath his shirt and onto his arc reactor that was implanted in his chest.

'Shit!' Sue hissed through the intercom and Tony's eyes shot towards the elevator, where the whole team was heading.

'What is it?'

'I forgot that we all get in here! This is gonna be a squeeze and a half,' Sue's panicked voice stopped when the team poured into the elevator. Tony watched as they shuffled in, 2012 Sue being at the back where present Sue would be standing. Bruce attempted follow after 2012 Tony, who situated himself on the suitcase that he turned to be on its side.

'Whoa, whoa. Hey!' Tony cried with the team chiming in. 'Buddy, what do you think? Maximum occupancy has been reached.'

'Take the stairs,' Thor suggested with a motion of his hammer to the side.

The elevator doors slid to a close and Bruce roared, colliding his fist with its metal. A dent was left, and the green tank huffed, heading towards the flights of stairs that lead down the ninety-three-storey building.

'Alright, Cap. We've got our scepter in the elevator just passing the eightieth floor,' Tony informed through his earpiece. 'Scott and Sue are in with past us. We've got eyes on the Space Stone.'

'On it,' Steve replied. 'Head to the lobby.'

'Alright. I'll see you there.'

Sue resisted the urge to speak into her earpiece to complain about her situation. When her past self stepped in and backed into the corner, she had to immediately jump up to the railing that ran along all four walls. Johnny followed next before the rest of the Avengers took their places, Tony sat in the front on the case that contained the Tesseract.

With her back flat against the wall and her fingers doing their best to grip at the polished wood, Sue's legs ached, and her feet curled to the shape of the railing. She could feel the pain begin to build from the unnatural curl of her feet and her fingers cried to be straightened from their bent angles. She was glad that she wore leather gloves, otherwise the sweat from her palms would make gripping the wall impossible. Her chest heaved, but she pressed her lips together to keep the loud breaths from escaping. Her younger self was directly beneath her, and she could see her scalp that was covered in dust and dirt from the battle in the city.

God, is that really what the top of my head looks like? She thought to herself. It was strange to see herself in third person and she hoped that the phenomenon would distract her from how much her limbs ached. She wished that someone would talk to allow her to at least adjust her stance or straighten her fingers. One sound could alert the team of her presence, and even though they wouldn't be able to see her, they were bright enough to know that someone was in the elevator that wasn't accounted for.

'So, are we going to whatever the hell Shwarma is?' 2012 Johnny piped up and Sue felt like kissing the crown of her brother's head.

'Yes!' 2012 Tony whipped around and pointed at the man of great suggestions. 'That's the best thing you've said all day, hellboy!'

While Tony's voice filled the elevator and drew in the team's attention, Sue let her one of her aching feet slip from the railing. The slightest squeak sounded from the slip of leather against metal, and Sue's heart stopped. It was the tiniest of noises and she looked around at each of the team's heads, waiting to see them turn in her direction. When no one did, her shoulders deflated in relief, and she laid her head back against the wall. But what she didn't see, was her past self's eyes roll to their corners at the noise, before looking back out front.

The elevator dinged and the doors opened. One by one, the Avengers piled out and Sue couldn't wait for the last of them to enter the lobby of the Stark tower. She yearned to let out a groan of frustration when her 2012 self stopped at the doors, which made the younger Johnny turn around with a raised eyebrow.

'You coming?' he questioned.

'I left something upstairs. I'll meet you down here in a sec.'

Sue wanted to cry. She watched her past self step back into the elevator and press the top floor button, meaning Sue had to stand on the railing for another ninety-three-storeys. The doors slid closed, and the lobby's bustle of workers was cut off. Sue's knees shook and the sweat that beaded on her temple slid down her face. She eyed her past self that faced the doors and she never thought she would be so angry at herself.

'You don't have to hide.'

Sue froze. 2012 Sue took slow steps to turn around; her eyes trailed on the back wall of the elevator. She looked up at the space just above the railing and present Sue sighed, the first noise she had made since stepping into the cramped box. She was meant to be in the lobby helping the plan of securing the Space Stone with Tony and Scott, but she was heading back up to the top floor of the tower. She had blown it because of her past self, and she had no choice but to give up her position.

'Tony always said I was too observant,' she sighed and jumped down to the floor of the elevator. Her past self's eyebrows raised at the sound of the voice that sounded scarily familiar. She looked to where the thud of her landing was and wasn't prepared for who would materialise in front of her.

2012 Susan Storm stepped back in shock as present Susan Storm appeared. The two stood in their red suits, the only difference in their attires being the alteration to present Sue's collar. 2012 Sue's hair was tied up in a ponytail, while present Sue's hair was twisted into its bun with her fringe against her forehead. They were identical and the two stared at each other with cautious eyes.

'W-What the hell. You're-you're... you're...'

'I'm you,' present Sue finished for herself. 'Well, technically. I don't know. It's really confusing. I don't even know if I'm allowed to be talking to you right now.'

'I-Is this a trick?! Loki?! How did you get in here-'

'I'm not Loki!'

'Nice try.'

2012 Sue's hands balled with blue and present Sue put her own hands up in defence. The elevator was about to arrive at the top floor and she didn't want to fight herself. She was still confused as to what would happen if she changed something about her past self's future. Bruce had explained it before the leap through time, but the science talk was too complicated.

'Wait, wait, wait!'

'Why should I?!' 2012 Sue prepared to send a sphere of blue and her expression pierced through her opponent.

'Our mother's name was Melody!' Susan cried. 'She died in a car accident and our father couldn't save her. We lost Reed Richards and Ben Grimm on the Marvel-1!'

'You learnt all of that from my file!'

'Ugh!' Sue put her face into her hands. 'Alright, fair enough. Um, um, um-'

'Enough!-'

'Morgan!' present Sue yelled in panic. 'Morgan will be the name of your first child!'

'W-What?' 2012 Sue lowered her hands with wide eyes. Present Sue didn't know what came over her, but the words continued to pour out of her mouth despite the ping she felt in her chest.

'Tony liked the name of our Uncle Morgan! You'll have a daughter, and you'll lose her... Y-You'll lose her... but then you'll have your son... Booker,' Sue swallowed the ball that formed in her throat, and she felt the familiar sting at the back of her eyes. It still hurt to talk about Morgan, but the way her past self's eyes sat wide open with her lips parted made it possible. Her expression was full of wonder and whatever disgust she had at the assumption of her double being one of Loki's tricks was gone.

'You're... you're future me?' 2012 Sue was gobsmacked, but couldn't deny how the words sounded so true. Morgan was a name that Tony had liked, and Booker was a name that she admitted she liked. There was no way that Loki would know those details, and she couldn't think of any other explanation as to why someone identical to her was stood in front of her. Time travel wasn't something that had been proven, but with the invasion of New York and the things she had seen in her few years of knowing Tony Stark, anything seemed possible.

'As hard as it is to believe, yes...'

'B-But... that's not possible.'

'It is. But I really don't have the time to explain,' present Sue rushed. 'My future depends on getting things from this part of history! I can't tell you what they are, but I have to get back down to the lobby.'

The elevator dinged once more, and the doors opened to reveal the top floor of the tower. The two Susan's glanced at the empty floor, before looking to each other again. Present Sue looked to the wall's buttons that listed the floors of the tower, and she eyed the one labelled with an 'L'. She overheard Tony speak into his earpiece to Scott, who replied from inside 2012 Tony's arc reactor. They assumed that she was nearby in her invisible form, but she was caught up just as Steve was, who was battling against his younger and swifter self.

'How do I know that my future self isn't up to something?'

'Oh, please, you really think we would do something like that?'

'I guess not...'

2012 Sue pressed the button that led back down to the lobby. Present Susan sighed in relief and the doors closed for what felt like the hundredth time. The sickening sensation of the drop through multiple floors ripped through the Sues' stomachs. They stared at each other awkwardly, the air tight and tense. 2012 Sue was itching to ask more about the future situation, while present Sue was anxious to get down to the lobby where Scott had pulled at one of the wires in 2012 Tony's arc reactor.

'Thank you for being understanding,' present Sue said once they reached the fifth floor, their arrival at the lobby merely seconds away.

'Well, it is me,' past Sue shrugged, and present Sue let out a laugh. 'Can I ask you something? Or will it mess up my future?'

'I'm not sure how it works, but I guess as long as I don't spoil anything, it's fine,' present Sue pondered aloud.

'Do we have a good life? Even if we lose our daughter?'

Sue bit her lip. The doors dinged and the chaotic scene of the lobby greeted them. The Avengers gathered around 2012 Tony who went into cardiac arrest, while Bruce broke through the door to the stairs and knocked present Tony across the room. People screamed as Bruce thundered towards the door, angry at the number of stairs he was forced to descend.

Susan's past self was so naïve and unaware of what was to come. She didn't know that her wedding would be ruined, and she would be forced to realise that she would struggle to have a normal life with a normal family. She didn't know that she would meet and lose Wanda. She didn't know that she nearly lost the man she loved multiple times. She didn't know that she would lose Johnny.

'Yeah...' present Sue's voice cracked, but it thankfully went amiss by her past self. 'Yeah, we have a good life.'

'I'm glad,' 2012 Sue smiled, before stepping aside. 'Go and do what you need to do.'
