73.

A spaceship levitated over the city, moving through streets and causing havoc to the civilians below. The shadow it casted made the air cold, the sunlight's warmth blocked, and its radiance dimmed. Dust invaded eyes and lungs, people's coughs filling the little silence that New York had.

The fires that blazed and exploded from car petrol tanks were tamed by Johnny, who absorbed the infernos with his hands. He helped a young family who were surrounded by flames, its ignition from the spaceship that blasted its weapons at random. With his palms open, the fire died and slipped up his arms, his clothes thankfully made of unstable molecules. The family ran off once Johnny cleared them a path, leaving him to roll his shoulders back to consume the rest of the inferno.

Stephen Strange's orange power weaved its way into the ship's engine, preventing it from moving further away. It quivered and jolted, attempting to continue forward. But Stephen held it steady, Wong beside him with his own fists encased with amber circles.

Tony wore glasses that contained FRIDAY, calling for her to analyse the situation and call for first responders. He stood small in the middle of the street, the ship's monstrosity giving him the sensation of the sublime. Bruce gawked upwards; his disbelief harder to contain compared to the cool Stark. Sue was close by, her hands still cradled in her chest. Her lips were parted in awe, her eyes the size of flying saucers at the sight of the alien vessel. She wanted to step forward and take Tony's hand for comfort, but she decided against it. Tony appeared to be fearless, and she knew he was going to attempt to save the day.

The ship's belly opened, sending a beam of light down to the uprooted tar that was the road. Stephen and Wong stepped forward to be beside the trio, Johnny keeping to the sidewalk. If he stayed unseen by whoever exited the ship, he could use the element of surprise to his advantage.

'Hear me, and rejoice!' a voice boomed. 'You are about to die at the hands of the Children of Thanos. Be thankful, that your meaningless lives are now contributing to...'

'I'm sorry, Earth is closed today!' Tony yelled back. 'You better pack it up and get outta here!'

Two aliens had materialised from the ship's beam. One was human sized, if not a bit taller, and one was as large as The Hulk. The smaller alien had white, wispy hair on the back of its ash-coloured head. Small eyes sliced through its wrinkly skin and where a nose would be, was flat skin that led to cut-sized lips. Its robes showed how slim the alien was, and this was emphasised by its large partner.

The larger of the two held a mechanical axe. Two tusks protruded from its jaw and its skin was reptile-like. Armour clothed its muscular form, and its nose was small and wide, placed in the middle of its dark orange eyes. Its lip was curled up in a snarl, eyeing the team of humans that attempted to stop them on their mission.

'Stone keeper,' the smaller of the aliens looked to Stephen. 'Does this chattering animal speak for you?'

'Certainly not,' Stephen stepped forward and Tony fumed from his nickname. 'I speak for myself. But you're trespassing in this city and on this planet.'

'It means get lost Squidward!'

'Tony,' Sue's squeaky voice came from the corner of her mouth. He ignored her as he stared down the alien, it staring back with its brow low over its far apart eyes.

'He exhausts me,' it looked to its large friend. 'Bring me the stone.'

The large alien's feet lifted and fell, rubble shaking from the sheer force and weight of each step. A huff came out of the being's nose, the axe held at the ready as it stalked towards the group. Bruce attempted to bring out his inner Hulk but struggled as the green sunk up and down from beneath his collar. Tony looked embarrassed, glancing at Stephen and Wong who waited for their supposed secret weapon.

'Dude, you're embarrassing me in front of the wizards.'

As the alien drew closer and the team bickered, Sue took advantage of the distraction. Johnny watched his sister disappear, his place on the sidewalk still going unnoticed. He did his best to divert his gaze to the floor, where he saw tiny indications of Sue's existence. Scuffs appeared in the dust, the Storm still as light-footed as ever. She walked around the altercation that began with Tony pressing his chest piece to harbour the suit. The red and champagne-gold armour encased his form, the man taking off his glasses to allow the mask to fall over his face. The new tech was slimmer than his previous suits, the edges of panels sliding into place and fitting like jigsaw pieces.

In her invisibility, Sue used all her concentration to ensure she stayed transparent. She never thought how much physical strength she needed for her power to expel from her cells. It used to come naturally, but after concealing it for so long, it was like learning to ride a bike again. It felt like her first ever attempts at full invisibility, the chilling sensation making her physically shiver. Cold washed over her skin and she was thankful that she just so happened to wear clothes that contained unstable molecules.

Her wardrobe was mixed up of maternity and normal clothes, and clothes that were made by Tony with unstable molecules. After months of no hero work, she fell into the habit of grabbing whatever suited her each day. There was no deliberation on whether she would need to be invisible. But today had been left up to fate, and it was on her side in this instance.

Tony fired his weapons at the large alien, sending it back and slamming into the ground with a loud rumble. The smaller alien stepped out of the way to dodge its flying friend. As the larger of the two gathered itself, Sue made it within metre radius of the alien who delivered the information. While it attacked Tony with a blast of what could only be described in human terms as electricity, Sue mustered a force to excel off her body.

The alien didn't expect an attack and it was blasted to the left, letting out a grunt as it fell to the floor. Sue felt an ache in her chest from the use of power but was satisfied with the result. She was able to keep her invisibility and stepped back as the alien got to its feet. Its stare was menacing as it looked around, bewildered by the magic from the unseen force. The bigger alien charged forward, swinging its axe around and letting out a roar. Sue, who hadn't intended for the alien to get so close, stumbled backwards to get out of its path.

In Sue's disorientation, she spotted her own feet below her. This made her panic, realising that she was in plain sight and her invisibility had worn off. The smaller alien that fired its blasts at Tony and the team caught her movement, turning its head and seeing her regain her balance. It sneered, cursing itself for letting her sneak up on him, even if she had the ability to camouflage.

While Wong was protecting them with a shield of orange, the large alien barrelled towards them with its axe raised. Stephen sent Bruce to central park through a portal, making sure the man was safe as Tony attempted to attack the monster. Johnny had contemplated helping Tony but made the split decision when he saw Sue collide with a building.

Sue let out a cry, the wall behind her crumbling from her impact. Her back spiked with pain and she fell towards the pavement. She was able to shield her head and face with her arms, but she could feel the bones in her forearms rattle from the force. The blast the smaller alien sent into her abdomen fizzled through her shirt, leaving a hole of burnt cotton. Her stomach wasn't harmed, as the attack wasn't enough to damage her skin. But at the absence of her suit that acted as an armour to attacks, intense bruising would form in its place on her stomach.

'Gotta get that stone outta here, now!' Tony called to Stephen.

'It stays with me,' the Strange fought back.

'Exactly. Bye.'

Johnny ignored the fact that the larger alien sent Tony back into central park, the red suit airborne and flown out of eyesight. Sue let out a squeak as she tried to move her hands to the ground in order to push herself up. The alien who attacked her took slow steps in her direction, its gaze looking down at her with a haze of disgust. How dare this puny human send it to the disgusting, unsanitary Earth floor. She was filth to it, and she was worthy of being destroyed before Thanos's plan commenced.

'Don't you dare,' Johnny flew in his flames and sent an inferno down to the alien. It stopped in its tracks and cried out as its skin burnt and sizzled. Johnny circled around, the stream of fire left behind him as Stephen and Wong inserted themselves into the fight.

As the alien's attention is drawn to the two sorcerers, Sue was able to use the building behind her to push herself to stand. The pain in her back was unbearable and she didn't realise how much strength she didn't have. Her pregnancy had weakened her, and she was feeling the effects. She took a deep breath, a hand to her bare stomach that peaked through her singed shirt.

'You good?' Johnny called down from his place in the air.

'I think so...' she mumbled and looked up, only to gasp. 'Johnny! Look out!'

Johnny attempted to turn but was crashed into and sent into the same building that held a Sue-shaped hole. His fires extinguished and he let out an 'oof!', before he fell to the pavement next to Sue. Like his sister, his hair was covered in rubbles and parts of the grey wall crumbled around him. His clothes that consisted of a brown jacket and jeans were covered in dirt, cuts sliced through his skin and blood spotting the surrounding, frayed material.

Sue's eyes were wide as she stared up at Johnny's attacker. Its board was still as sleek as before and its skin was a mirror to the street and buildings around it. The human features of blank eyes she remembered so vividly stared down at her and Johnny, its expression emotionless. Its knees were bent as it controlled its board, harnessing its power that Thanos graced it with.

'The end is inevitable. I am sorry.'

Its voice was just as flat as ever. Although sympathy was implied, Sue found it hard to believe the silver surfer. She remembered how it stared at her when she was pregnant with Morgan, how Tony assumed that she reminded the alien of its lover back on its own planet. She couldn't tell if the surfer still thought the same, but due to the fact that she was yet to be attacked, she assumed it was.

Johnny experienced a new fury at the sight of the old opponent. He leapt into the air and charged at the surfer, flames blazing at the chance to finish a year long job. The surfer tensed at the Storm's attack and pulled its board up, absorbing the fire that Johnny sent from his hands. A fight broke out in the air, the surfer attempting to pull away and fly off into the city. But it was blocked by Johnny who wasn't interested in another chase.
