'It looked like a man, but completely covered in silver,' Johnny tried to explain. 'And it was flying this like... like a surfboard type thing. I know that sounds crazy.'
'Oh, not at all!' Clint piped up. 'So, did you follow the shiny man to Lollipop Land or to the Rainbow Junction?'
A snicker ran through the who stood in the lab of the Stark tower. Johnny was sat on a stool in a grey t-shirt and a pair of sweatpants. Sue leaned against the counter behind her, clad in a maroon jumper and jeans. It wasn't what she thought she would be wearing on the afternoon of her wedding day. But she already had her moment of despair at the fact that her life will never be normal.
'Look, I know what I saw!' Johnny glared at Clint. The Barton glanced at Natasha in hopes of catching her in a laugh, but dropped his smug grin when she held an unimpressed look.
'Whatever it was, it can convert matter and energy,' Tony spoke up with his back to the group. He typed away on FRIDAY's screen that displayed graphs and heat signatures. Out of his beige suit and into a band t-shirt and jeans, Tony eyed the spike that towered over the others in the graph.
'So, it caused the anomalies?' Nick Fury questioned.
'From what FRIDAY was able to pick up-' Tony turned to the group and looked at the director. '-looks like it radiates cosmic energy when it exerts itself. That can somehow randomly affect matter.'
'The same radiation that hit us?' Sue asked, motioning her head to herself and her brother next to her.
'Similar to that, yeah.'
Sue nodded to Tony who smiled lightly when she spoke. The two barely had a moment together after the ceremony before they were pulled into the lab to discuss the event with Fury. There were things that Sue wanted to talk about with Tony, but they would have to wait until they had a second alone. In result of the situation, she crossed her arms over her chest, and saw Nick plant his hands on his hips. She saw how he listened intently to Tony and couldn't help but be irritated by his presence.
Tony informed her that Nick had attempted to sway him to look into SHIELD's recent sightings of the supposed anomalies. Despite Tony's decline to the request in true Stark fashion, Sue still wasn't happy with Nick. His insistence for Tony to do SHIELD a favour on their wedding day made Sue's blood boil. Even though the ceremony was ruined from other events, she clenched her teeth at the fact that Fury still got his way.
'Thor? Is this anything of your expertise?'
Nick turned to the demi-god who had been quiet ever since arriving at the tower. The Odinson looked surprised to be spoken to directly and glanced towards Tony. They exchanged a look that was unreadable outside of their communication and it made the group raise their eyebrows in question. Thor's shoulders fell into a long sigh before he looked to Nick, who waited with his lips pursed in impatience.
'I haven't seen anything like this,' the man shook his head. 'This... silver surfer?'
Thor raised his eyebrows at Johnny, who looked at him with narrowed eyes. He knew his story was laughable, but he was adamant that the entity was shaped like a man who flew on a silver surfboard. Johnny had followed the silver surfer through New York, dodging cars and buildings. There was one moment where he was close enough to make out facial features, but they were silver and reflective like the rest of its body. Johnny compared the entity to a Greek statue, with the chiselled chest and absent eyes. But it was all he could make out before the entity spotted his flames that flickered too close and flew upwards, disappearing through the clouds. Johnny attempted to follow but the sky grew darker the higher he climbed. The entity left the Earth's atmosphere and Johnny had no choice but to turn back to inform the others.
'Must be from out of this world,' Thor continued. 'But I cannot tell you of its origin. I will only be able to tell if it were to return.'
'Vision? What about you? Can you tell us anything we don't already know?' Nick tried the red being in the room. Vision was still in his wedding attire, his grey suit finely pressed and neat against his form. He stood next to Wanda, who had changed out of her bridesmaid grown and was in her red trench coat.
'I'm afraid I cannot,' Vision said, his expression troubled. 'If what Mr Storm is saying is true, then it is beyond my knowledge. I'm sorry.'
Nick hummed in annoyance and looked down at his feet. He looked to the screen behind Tony and tried to see if the man had found anything he didn't want to share. Tony noticed this and flicked his gaze to Sue, who also watched the SHIELD director. The two were reluctant to give the man the light of day after their failed attempt at marriage, but the Avengers were concerned. Whatever being was able to cut all forms of electricity just by being in the area, was bound to be a threat of some sort. Especially when it caused the disaster it did on the rooftop.
'We'll keep monitoring for anymore sightings,' Nick informed before he turned to Tony. 'Will you do the same, Stark?'
'If I feel like it.'
Fury resisted the urge to sigh and sufficed with a roll of his eye. He then headed for the door of the lab and walked out as FRIDAY operated its sliding feature. The tension in the lab dropped as soon as the man was out of earshot and the team's posture relaxed considerably. Wanda took hold of Vision's hand, the two glancing at each other and Wanda's eyes filled with concern. Nick was yet to say anything about Vision's existence, and they hoped that he wouldn't become a topic of discussion.
'I think I'm going to go lie down,' Johnny stood from the stool and stretched his arms out above him. Sue furrowed her brow at this and saw the hint of worry that was hidden under his expression.
'You okay?'
'Yeah, I'm fine. I just want to rest for a while. I'll be in my room.'
Sue eyed Johnny who took his time walking through the lab. His figure swayed slightly, and she assumed that he exerted himself too much when using his powers. But his lack of jokes was unusual for the Storm, and Sue wondered if there was something he wasn't telling the team. But she let him walk out and turned at the feeling of a stare of her side.
Tony blinked when Sue caught his gaze. He hitched the side of his lip up in a small smile before he motioned his head to the right. Sue didn't have to clarify what he meant and silently pushed herself off the counter. While she left the lab to head to the living room, Tony pressed a few buttons on his screen before following her. He made sure that FRIDAY would monitor all spikes of cosmic radiation that occurred from anywhere around the world. It would put his own mind at ease, and give the team some warning for if they needed to head out on a mission.
In the living room, Sue sat on the sofa with her hands together and her elbows on her knees. She was leant forward and turned her head when she heard footsteps against the tiled floor. Tony walked across the room and sat down next to her, his knee bumping into hers. His top half faced the woman and he made sure to keep eye contact as he began to speak.
'The kid took the subway home, by the way,' he mentioned and Sue assumed he was talking about Peter. 'His aunt was pretty worried. He said he hoped you were okay, though.'
'That's nice of him...'
Tony nodded at her words and saw how low her eyelids hung over her eyes. He had known her long enough to see when she was upset. Her nose held a tinge of red from when she cried after the disaster on the rooftop, and her undereyes were slightly swollen. He was surprised at how quickly she had wiped her tears and stood from the platform, taking her dress into her hands to step down to the floor. She knew that the team would have to have a meeting, and didn't want to appear as if she was moping. Tony wanted to assure her that no one would think lowly of her if she decided to be absent from the lab, but he chose to let her prosper on for the time being. But her true feelings were obvious to him, as he and Johnny were the only ones who could read Sue like a book.
'I know its all happening at once, but I got in contact with some people in Malibu who can do a ceremony on the beach,' Tony's words fell out of his mouth without a single pause. 'We'll make it great. I'll set up a dinner, and we can just invite the important people. Doesn't have to be big, doesn't-'
'Tony, I don't want another wedding.'
The man stopped and blinked in confusion.
'You don't?'
'After this one? No,' Sue let out a humourless laugh, before she pursued her lips in concern. 'But this proves exactly what I've been saying all along.'
'What do you mean?'
'We can't even have a wedding without it turning into World War Three,' she pinched the bridge of her nose with her fingers, feeling the anxiety build in her chest at the thought of their chaotic future.
'I know, but once we're married, everything will be normal,' Tony reached out and took hold of her free hand. He held it between his fingers and felt her manicured nails that Pepper had paid for. The Potts and Wanda had taken Sue out for a spa day to prepare for the wedding, and it made him feel awful to know that it was all for nothing.
'We will never have normal lives! Not as long as we do what we do!' Sue's tone was sharp and her voice was loud. She realised how much it filled the large living room and bounced off the walls, hurting her own ears at its volume. She cleared her throat and hoped that the others hadn't heard it from the lab. She saw how Tony looked at her with pain in his eyes and guilt in his heart. He hadn't shown much emotion when it came to their failed ceremony, but she knew that it hurt him to see their plans torn in two.
'How could we possibly raise a family like this?' her voice changed to a weak tone and even shook at the delicate subject.
Sue unconsciously put her freehand to her stomach. Tony didn't miss the movement and looked down to where their family was growing bigger day by day. He thought about the fantasy he wanted with Sue; the house in the middle of a forest and their hero lives far behind them. It was still an image he strived for, and their marriage was meant to be the next step towards that. He cursed the fact that he was so close but was pushed four steps back at the entrance of some silver-painted surfer who tore through their ceremony.
'I know...' Tony looked at the woman he loved. 'But I will do everything I can to make this right. I'll run tests. I'll do anything for you. For us. For her.'
His eyes flickered down to her stomach and Sue felt her heart flutter at the light she could see in his eyes. Tony was adamant that they would have a baby girl. The gender was yet to be determined, but Tony said that he knew she would be his little princess. Something about his genius brain was always the reason he gave, but Sue didn't ever challenge him. Whenever she pictured their perfect future, there was always a little girl whose hair was as dark as Tony's, and her nose was spitting image of Sue's.
'I might not deserve this, but you do,' he brought the hand he held up to his lips and kissed her smooth skin. 'You deserve a normal life. And I want to be the one to give it to you.'
