Sue briskly walked down the length to the next corner and grabbed the rail to swing herself round. The man who she saw before was walking to the control room that was just ahead. She stopped in her pursuit and analysed the suit he wore. It was identical to hers in the way it fit tightly against his form, and his gloves and shoes were the same black leather.
The curiosity was too much for Sue. His hair, identical to hers that was changed from the radiation, was the same. His back profile, everything, everything looked too much like him.
'Excuse me?' she called out and he stopped. The sound of her voice made him go rigid and she saw how his shoulders deflated in a loud sigh.
'Can I ask where you got that suit?' Sue asked when she saw she had his attention. She waited for him to answer, but she was surprised when all he did was turn to face her.
Sue froze. Her ears cancelled out noise and was replaced with a shrill of ringing. An ache formed in her chest at the shock, and she gripped the rail next to her to keep her balance. He looked the same, yet so different. He still had the light freckles that dotted along his nose and cheeks. His eyes were still the dark brown that matched Sue's. His hair was still curly on top of his forehead and the once blonde locks were the same brown that Sue had. Everything felt so familiar.
'Hi, Sue.'
His voice was the same; deep and still laced with the accent of their hometown. She could see the full look of his suit and the only thing that was different was the napla-shape that sat on the left of her chest was absent from his. It was the same blue as the suit she originally brought to Tony.
'Johnny...' her voice came out in a squeak. 'How... how are you...'
Sue's brother gave an embarrassed smile. He also was surprised to see his younger sister. He saw how different she looked, but also how familiar she was. The helicarrier was large, but not large enough to make it so their paths didn't cross. But Johnny fought hard to try and make it so.
'It's a bit of a long story...' Johnny replied. He walked forward and stopped in front of Sue, looking down at her wide eyes. 'It's good to see you.'
He wrapped his large arms around her and hugged her tightly. She stood still at first, the shock preventing her from moving, but the familiar sensation of embracing her older brother broke through it. She sunk into his chest and felt the tears leak out of her eyes. Her brother was here. He was alive. It had taken a while for her to overcome the full grieving process of losing her brother and friends. But Johnny embraced her, and it felt just like before. It was overwhelming.
'We can talk later,' Johnny pulled away, noticing how Sue tried to stay in his arms. 'Fury's expecting us.'
'Us?' Sue repeated.
Johnny took her hand and turned to continue to the control room. Sue stumbled after him and wiped at her eyes. She didn't want to be debriefed by Director Fury after running into her presumed-dead brother in the hallway. But there had been some major damages and events that needed to be discussed with what was left of the group.
They walked in just as Tony left after Fury talked about Agent Coulson's dream of the Avengers Intiative. Natasha and Steve turned to look at the two who looked distracted and dazed.
'Oh, Miss Storm...' Director Fury looked at the two, his eye switching between them in caution. 'I wasn't sure if you were up for the meeting. I see you've met, or should I say reunited with... Mr Storm.'
Steve and Natasha looked confused as they saw Sue and the man they didn't know in the same suits, only altered colours. Sue tried to stop the tears that continued to gather in her eyes, but having Johnny standing in front of her made it near impossible. She saw the confusion in Natasha and Steve's eyes and looked for Tony, seeing an empty seat next to Steve on the end of the table.
'Was Tony here?' she asked through her splutters and sniffles. Director Fury nodded lightly, and Sue was grateful Tony also wasn't MIA.
'Is Tony the man in the metal suit?' Johnny asked and Sue looked at him through her red eyes.
'You know him?'
'I... crossed paths with him today in the rotors.'
Sue didn't bother to question him and noticed how Director Fury looked down at her. The argument they had in the lab before the explosion was mostly from the manipulating of Loki's scepter. Any anger that escalated was long gone, but Fury was sure Sue still wanted some answers about how Johnny was alive.
'I was going to use this briefing to inform you about Mr Storm here. But seeing as you two have already ran into each other, I'm sure he'll be able to fill you in,' Director Fury gave Johnny a look before he walked away. He would need to fill out some reports for Agent Coulson's death and left the room in a somber mood.
'Thanks for dropping me in it,' Johnny mumbled as he turned around. Sue wanted to know everything, so it was going to be a long talk.
---
Sue awoke with a loud gasp. The protective gear was suffocating and the sweat that filled her now brown fringe made it flat against her forehead. She panted and felt the pain that ached all throughout her body. She cried out as she forced herself to sit upright and noticed how dry her mouth was. The throbbing pain within her made it difficult to manouveur, so she sat against the wall as she was still disorientated.
The storage room was silent as the cosmic storm wiped out all operations on the Marvel-1, including the radioactive batteries that usually hummed loudly. The emergency lights were the only thing lighting the room, creating a red hue across everything.
Sue didn't know long she was knocked out for. All she knew was that she felt weak and fatigued. She didn't know if she had been in the storage room for more than ten minutes, which is past the recommended exposure time for the radiation from the batteries. But considering everything seemed to be shut down, the radiation was only lingering.
She forced herself to get to her feet and stumbled to the door, not bothering to do the process of making sure no radiation infiltrated the ship. But what she didn't know was that the entire ship was flooded with lingering radiation, so it wouldn't make much of a difference.
Sue stepped out of the storage room and unzipped the protective gear. She threw the yellow suit to the floor and breathed in and out slowly. She planted her hands onto her knees as she took the moment to take in some fresh air. Well, as fresh as the air could be on a rocket in space that had been hit by a radioactive storm.
Standing in her silver bodysuit, Sue looked to her left out the window that showed the never-ending blackness of space. The red hue of the emergency lights glowed in the reflection of the window. She saw how dark the bags under eyes were and how slick her skin was with sweat. The red glistened off the beads of moisture that sat on her cheeks and there was slightly gaunt look to her appearnace. She also noticed how her hair was a different colour. What was once a vibrant blonde was now a dark brown.
'What...' Sue mumbled to herself, and she grabbed the hairs that sat by her face. She inspected them in her fingers and was amazed to see that her reflection in the window hadn't deceived her.
Suddenly, everything clicked. Reed had said there was a cosmic storm heading for the ship, but it would reach them long after they were back on Earth. She was in the storage room when she saw Johnny pounding on the door screaming words she couldn't here. Sue put two and two together and whipped around, seeing Johnny on the floor.
Johnny?!'
Sue fell to her knees beside his body. He laid unmoving with his eyes closed and his skin still warm. She took hold of his wrist in attempts to wake him, but she noticed how the natural rise and fall of his chest was absent. The red hues of the lights above didn't allow Sue to see the full extent of his thin skin and loss of natural colour. His silver bodysuit sat heavily against his figure and Sue didn't want to accept what she knew.
'Johnny...' she whispered, the tears already falling down her cheeks. The sobs came next as she lowered her forehead to his chest, laying it there as she wept. He was so excited when Reed said that he could be a passenger on the mission. Now, it would've been all he knew before the storm hit the ship.
It took a while for Sue to lift her head from her brother's chest. The ache from her body teamed with the pain in her heart made it hard for Sue to want to ever move again. She didn't want to leave him there in the hallway. But she had no choice. She was somehow alive and she had to get moving.
Her face felt tight when she stood to her feet. She looked down at her brother and sniffed away the last of her tears. She had to see if either Reed or Ben had suffered the same fate. With one last look, she forced her legs to lift and fall as she walked away from Johnny.
By the time she got to the control room of the rocket, she struggled to keep herself standing. The pain was too much, and her body wanted to collapse and take more time to heal and adapt to the exposure. But she dragged her drained body along the walls and eventually made it to the control room.
Over the rail, she looked down to see both Reed and Ben. They laid on the floor near the circular desk that looked out to the large windscreen of the ship. She didn't need to descend the stairs to check if they were dead. Their bodies laying unmoving and lifeless was enough for Sue.
She let her legs give way. She slumped against the rail and laid her head back. The ship was quiet as it floated through space. There was no engine to keep it stationary or to send it forward, it just turned with the orbit. Sue experienced the lonliness of space with its silence and its void of anything warm or comforting.
