Chapter 4 | Just trust me

Ryan walked forward, grabbing my hand and then turned in the direction of the sheer cliff drop. We moved closer to the edge as Ryan spun me in front of his chest. My back faced his chest as he held my arms forward, over the drop. We approached the drop and surprisingly my feet stopped walking, they resisted.

Ryan leaned into my back closer to me, "why'd you stop?" He questioned.

"I- I don-" I tried to speak but unwillingly I felt scared, nervous. But how? How could this situation happen? I'd survived a fight with a psycho in a skull mask, so why was being on a cliff getting in the way of my emotional blockade?

I'd read my files, from The Ni-Key project (also known as the project that orchestrated the end of days killing game to clean up their mess). In my file it had clearly explained my ability bestowed upon me by The Ni-Key project, my ability was emotional blockade which meant I could will myself into an 'emotionless' state, in this state I could block out all feelings.

'So why wasn't it working now? What was different?' I thought to myself.

"Just trust me" Ryan echoed in my ear as he leaned in closer before spinning me around so I was facing him. He outstretched his arms and I did the same, so I was leaning over the edge of Kilner. My heart raced blood rushing through my veins like race cars speeding around a race track at break neck speeds.

Suddenly, Ryan's left arm let go and I spun around to face Kilner head on. The buildings seemed so small, so insignificant, I could finally understand why Ryan liked the spot so much.

"Hey" I shouted toward Ryan who was behind me, "my names Patricia by the way! Patricia Walker!" I continued still shouting.

"Well it's nice to meet you Patricia" he shouted back in a reply. "My full name is Ryan Moore by the way" his words a friendly echo in the wind.

"The feeling is mutual Ryan Moore" I shouted back to Ryan, using his full name.

He let me wait for about a minutes time, the time trickling along slowly. "Hey!" Ryan shouted, "Patricia do you trust me?" He asked.

Involuntarily, I nodded a 'yes' and with a sharp tug he pulled me back away from the edge but not far enough when his last hand let go. For a spilt second I was not supported and I felt afraid until I landed. Ryan scooped me up into his arms, supporting me steadily with his head looming over me.

"Are you okay?" Ryan questioned as he smiled, his cheeky smile stretched across his face.

I nodded in response my face fully alit with an untameable smile as Ryan helped me to my feet. We then both slumped to the ground and sat down on the cold dry rock surface.

"How come someone like you is at Kilner?" I questioned to Ryan who seemed completely absorbed by the view of the compound.

Ryan looked over to me, breaking his gaze away from Kilner. Ryan looked to me as he responded "well my mom left when I was young about twelve, my dad started going out at night and got in with a 'bad' crowd and got into some trouble with this crowd. So he moved up here where no one could find him and dragged me with him," Ryan explained nonchalantly.

"What did your dad do?" I questioned back slightly intrigued by the vagueness of his story.

Ryan rested his head on his arm and avoided my gaze for a few seconds until he turned and looked at me once more, "well to be honest I don't know the specifics but it had something with the FOS group."

The name seemed familiar to me but I couldn't place it. "Who was that group?" I questioned.

"Really! You don't know it?" Ryan questioned his tone utterly surprised. I shook my head and Ryan began to speak, "well FOS stands for Free Our Society, they were a group of fanatics who orchestrated terror attacks on main cities. They released public messages explaining the reason these attacks were committed, in these messages they said that FOS wanted to prompt a state of anarchy, this was done to spread worldwide acts of violence and crimes."

"So what? Was- is your father a member of Free Our Society?" I questioned back.

"No!" Ryan replied quickly almost like he was going to snap in anger but he kept his composure. "He was on the police force and was sent to protect a subway in New York and he did. But there was another attack further up town, an even bigger one. He was awarded a badge of honour but soon after he started getting death threats from FOS so he quit his job and moved out here, to hide us." Ryan explained with the upmost sincerity.

I laughed quietly to myself and replied, "it sounds like your father is one of the good guys."

"Yeah. What about your dad?" Ryan asked in response.

I huffed in response and said "well I don't think he's one of the good guys," My tone monotonous. The conversation ended soon after but more picked up as we sat for a few hours until we each decided to head to our respective homes.
