Story 4: devil's ball
I think I was 16 years old when I died. I had an illness that I couldn't handle; I was blind. Being born to never see, not knowing who I look like, or who the people around me look like such as my father or my mother. Or even giving a good explanation on what I look like.
I don't how I died, but I know that on the day of my death very few tears were shed on my funeral. Even though I was dead I expected myself to go straight to heaven but I didn't, I ended up in a place where I was to be judged, well that was what the people told me after I stopped hearing cries at my funeral.
I guess this is where everything starts or ends. Oh well whatever happens to me is meant to be luckily I died with my diary and had a pen on me so I could record my last thoughts. But all I've been doing is waiting.
I put down the pen and laid my diary down. I closed my eyes. I know I've been here for a while. When I first got here I saw a woman in a desk. The room was plain white and she told me in a soothing voice to sit down. There were chairs and I sat down against the wall and pulled out my diary.
I know it's weird; I'm a blind girl who has never been taught how to read or write yet I'm doing so naturally. I thought the same thing but when pulled out my diary I started writing and it seems to make since, I don't know if it's the right way but it feels right.
Hmmm. What to do now? I finished writing for today because nothing else is happened. I'm so bored. I'm glad when I died I could see but, I'm pretty sure I've been waiting for what feels like years. Looking and seeing and learning colors from how they were described from my parents. How old am I? That's strange I don't remember how old I am. Oh well it's probably in my head.
"It's not in your head your seventeen," Said the lady in front of the desk.
"Huh?"
"You've been here for a year now."
You can read my mind?!
"Yes."
"Why didn't you say something?!" I screamed. I felt so violated!
"Simple, you didn't ask."
Is there a way for you to not read my mind?
"Sure for a trade of course."
"What type of trade?" I asked curiously.
"A simple one, I will give you a mind blocker for your eye vision," she said smiling.
"Sure," I said without hesitating. What would it matter to a previous blind person anyway?
"Very well," she lifted her hands and pointed them towards me and next thing I know, it was all black and I couldn't see a thing.
I knew my eyes were open because this wasn't my first time being blind.
Can you read my mind?
No reply.
"Hello?"
"Your still here" I heard the woman say.
"In fact the time has come!" she said excitedly.
"Huh, For what?" I asked. What is she talking about?
"The Devils ball!" she said excitedly.
"What? You're going to a ball?" I asked.
"No silly, you're going!" She said smiling wide.
'But I have nothing to wear.'
'Don't worry I'll get a perfect dress for you.
'Okay." I said and after a few minutes she helped me into my dress. I heard her gasp and I frowned.
'What wrong? Does it look bad?' I asked frowning again.
'No you look beautiful!' she said and I felt my cheeks get warm.
'So what is the devils ball?' I asked looking down.
'Oh! The devils ball happens once every year and no one knows when it is but everyone who goes to the ball is automatically re-invited next year.' She said but it sounded like there was more to the story than that but I let it pass.
'On this day only the young women, such as yourself, will dance with the kings son.' She continued as she led me through a series of hallways.
'King?' I asked perplexed.
'King Lucifer silly' she said laughing lightly.
'Oh.' I said unsure of what to say next.
'Anyway you will dance with his son, Luke, like every other woman and at the end of the ball they will choose one girl to "try their life over". Everyone else will have to wait until next year. I nodded my head unsure of what to say next.
'Ah here we are.' She said stopping me.
'Since your sight is gone and your mind is barricaded you are offered a choice here. You can have your sight back and gain beauty beyond ones comparison or you can strengthen two of your senses that your eyes would've had, you will still be able to keep the barriers around your mind up.
'I choose the second option.' I said without hesitating. I heard her mumble something that sounded like: your one strange human girl.
'Very well, which two senses would you like to strengthen?' she asked and I already knew the answer to that.
'Hearing and sensing all around me,' I said and I started to feel a wave of pressure around me and I suddenly felt all around me. It was like I could see with my body.
I heard the women move to open the door that was in front of us and I moved forward and felt everyone look at me. I sensed a staircase and I grabbed the railing. I'm sure people thought I could see and that's what I was going for.
I descended down the staircase and reached the bottom of the staircase. I stopped as I felt someone in front of me.
I heard a thick slightly husky voice speak.
'May I have this dance?'
Luke's POV
I was standing next to my father when I heard the doors open and I saw the most beautiful girl I have ever seen.
She had long black hair, bright green eyes that seemed slightly dazed, pale white skin, a long slender body rosy pink lips and a long red gown that hugged all her curves in the right places. She had no makeup on and she looked like an angel that fell from the sky.
I watched as she slowly went down the stairs and I walked towards her. I was in front of her and she stopped.
'May I have this dance?' I asked and I raised my hand for her. She smiled and I felt my heart skip for an odd reason.
'Of course.' She said smiling showing two slight dimples on her cheeks. She raised her hand and as soon as it touched mine it felt like there were sparks flying through my hand, but in a good way.
The music started playing and I grabbed her waist lightly as we danced to the music.
That's strange; she hasn't once looked at me in the eyes. Usually when someone looks me in the eyes they shrivel up and turned into dust or have basically turned to mute and stone like from my appearance. I'm so sexy that's what becomes of those girls; they stare at me with lust and nothing more.
'What is your name?' I asked her and she paused.
'Serea' she said. (Pronounced Sar-e-uh)
I wanted to know how she died and I tried getting into her mind but I wasn't able too. That's strange; usually I can get into anyone's mind but her I can't. Surely she could not have traded her eyesight for a barricade.
'Is there something wrong?' she said scrunching her eyebrows together.
'No.' I said and she looked at me right in the eyes and I waited for her to turn into dust but she didn't. I looked at her stunned. There was only one explanation for that.
'Are you blind?' I whispered in her ear.
'Yes.' She replied not thinking much to it.
'Why? When you die you are given back everything.'
'I traded it for a barrier around my mind.' She said completely catching me off guard and I was about to say something when I was interrupted by people clinking there wine filled glasses with forks.
The sound could make a man go insane! I gritted my teeth to the annoying ass sound. Who ever came up with that idea is SO going to hell!
'We are here to announce the one girl my son has decided will get another chance at life.' My father said. I walked to my father's side and I looked at a girl and she looked back into my eyes and started to crumble into dust.
'I have chosen, father.' I said but I couldn't keep my eyes on my father I kept looking at Serea almost in trance of her beauty.
'I choose Serea.' I said with so much confidence my father took a little step back.
'Serea will you please come forward,' He said and I watched as she carefully walk to my father and curtsy.
My father seemed stunned to see this as well I; no human has ever shown the proper way of how to act in front of my father.
'You have chosen wisely my son. You will watch over her,' my father whispered in my ear. I nodded.
'You will have another chance at life and-' my father stopped mid sentence and came closer to her. He lifted her chin and I felt anger start to bubble inside of me.
'Young Serea can you see me?' my father asked and she shook her head.
'No, sir,' She said. His eyes widened and he looked at me. He smiled a little and it disappeared.
'You will start your new life with all your senses heightened and you will be able to see.' He said as a servant came to him hold a glass of special wine.
'Drink this and you will return to the human world with little or no memory of this.' He said and she drank it and started to fall. I ran and caught her half way my father looked at me and nodded in approval and she started dissolving into my arms.
'See you on earth' I whispered to her before she completely turned into dust.
